I have no understanding of what people do there?  I went when once you invited me to LB and didn't know what to do once I got there.  I can already email you.  I don't understand what people do there?  Once I visited your page LB, my email address book somehow without me doing a thing or without my knowledge, sent a message inviting people to MY facebook page/thing and I hadn't done anything but look at one page of LB's page/thing.  I was so upset (infuriated) I've never dared go back.  But what is everyone doing there?  I am lost.  What is the appeal?

Thanks,
Martha

From what I know it's you're own personal blog sort of thing, where you can add photos & information about yourself. add video's, but they can only be 2 minutes long, find friends that you know from years ago, but finding friends only happens when they use their real name & has a pic of themselves, otherwise there could be like 7 John Henry's, & without a picture you don't know who it is, if you want to remain anonymous, forget it.

I don't get it either, Martha.  I had the same experience but ended up joining after being invited as someone else's friend and now I'm drifting in a cyber world of forgotten passwords.  I can't even find my own page.  Just wanted you to know you're not alone in the Land of Lost Cyber Souls.  Many things remain a mystery to me and that's okay.

I find that friends who have knowledgable info and similar tastes in music use their fb page to post/share some of their favourite youtube clips. Some pretty awesome stuff.

less time consuming than searching on your own...

I jumped on twitter last year and even though I'm still registered, I find it pretty much useless. There are the odd music-related tidbits/reviews I enjoy reading about, but they're all linked from sites where you'd read about them eventually any way.

I really don't find it interesting to read about what type of java someone just consumed or what tv show they just tuned in to...

I have reconnected with former co-workers and school mates that I would NEVER have were it not for FB.
I like the silly little quizzes, sending hearts, drinks, hugs and Birthday wishes. Harmless fun.

I do not accept every friend request I get; especially if I do not really know the person.
I make sure my privacy settings are as air tight as possible.

And if someone is REALLY annoying with constant posts about their EVERY activity I "hide" them.

All in all I've found Facebook to be fun and with the Stones Boards so slow due to lack of Band activity, it's a nice alternative.

LJ.

Let me explain, Martha: Facebook is a place without a function whatsoever, it's for exhibitionists and voyeurs and bored people without anything constructive to do with their lives except to sit on a fucking computer all day wasting their precious time. AND for Lord Gazza and his friends, of course ! I fucking hate it. It's a bloody disease. I thought it would be a good idea to go on, but get extremely infuriated by all the shit-messages like "farty-face has invited you to eat a banana split at the Trump Cafe" "Invisible Nobody has requested to become your friend" Friend?? WTF! I want REAL friends . I'm not bloody interested to start a pretend snowball fight with a pretend friend, or to be greeted by someone from my past I haven't heard from for the past twenty years, to whom it doesn't even seem to bloody occur that I would happily carry on not hearing from them for the next forty years either.

The only cool aspect is that all my daughter's friends requested to become my friend and every now and then I log on to see what all the teenagers are up to. Yes, I know, but that's "protective parental voyeurism", which is sort of alright. [smiley=wink.gif] And I have a few friends scattered all around the globe with whom it actually is rather nice to exchange the odd word every now and then. I have been threatening to cancel for a long time now and may even do it very soon.

So, People: don't even fucking think about sending me a friend request, send me a fucking email instead, or even better A LETTER!!!!!!

Facebook, or "My Face" as I call it, is just another one of those idiotic things people can do while working, making love, cooking, having a shit, killing the husband, watching TV, etc... We seem to live in an era of "PARTIAL ATTENTION" to everything, with no one really concentrating on anything specific anymore, everything is "instant", instant messaging, instant gratification, etc......And the bloody thing generates constant messages to keep you logging on, self-perpetuating the crap, like "suggest friends for this poor loser",  "help this other poor loser to find his friends", "make a "which word describes your personality the best questionnaire", I mean, fuck off already, and never mind the bloody banks collapsing, we would be a lot better off as a global economy if everyone wasn't wasting time on their fucking computers all the time...

AND WHICHEVER PICTURES YOU PUT ON ARE AUTOMATICALLY COPYRIGHT-OWNED BY FACEBOOK. Great, huh?

OOOH! I feel better now after this little rant. Just like Joey after one of his bowel movements....

:smilemick

It is the evolution of the internet.
A medium to engage conversation with those individuals one enjoys.
A forum to announce events one may want to attend.
A place to enjoy music from singers & bands who have a
presence.  As example, I did not know John Hiatt had a
new cd out this week & have heard many samples of this
first on Facebook.  I would not have been able to follow
Mac on his various tours as well know he plays the Lucky Lounge
every Thursday.  I would have never hooked up with front row
Peter Wolf tickets had it not been for The Funky Judge from the UK
who I met at the show.......all from Facebook.
It is a Wicked Pissa place!

It also allows one to monitor their teenage children's activities, who live
in my house, use the computer & energy which I & my wife provide for them.
I was once their age, they are my offspring, which equates to potential
situations which may or may not be, shall I say, "colorful"?
You will pardon me, for that is all I am legally allowed to discuss
about the years of my life 1971-1978 for another six years.

Thank you for your cooperation & support!

All of the above is right with me.
I welcome meeting other RO folks there.
I will also add I have learned from my time there
where sugar is better than vinegar.
Really did not hit me until this week.
I am in my third day of political therapy.
So I am done with the political thread on RO.
It's all about what things are worth in life.
I need to deal with the online time in a more positive manner.

Facebook is just another way for people to interact with others. It really helps when you don't want to talk to someone face to face, even though you live in the same town.

WTF? I've only had the fucking thing two months, post nothing more than the occasional music video and thats it. I'm hardly the epicentre of the Facebook Universe. You can hide or block all these meaningless applications easily enough (no more fucking Farmville. Thank Christ), and as LJ so eloquently points out, if someone feels the need to tell the world they've just had a bowel movement, blocking any further annoying updates from their tedious lives is easy enough.

The whole thing is only as intrusive or trivial as you want or allow it to be.

I LOVE you Jo!  LOVE YOU.  May I quote you?  That was a brilliant rant/essay. :-)

Thanks for helping me understand what goes on and who might be using it.  I don't sit in front of a computer much at all so when I go on to check my email I am anxious about having the time to get proper replies sent to my friends who are kind enough to write to me.  That takes most of my time.  I am not bored and my attention....I TRY very hard to focus it and be clear in my intentions.  I don't need help with losing anymore of my sights or getting myself more lost and cornfused.  Thinking straight and true takes a lot of my energy.  And my aim is true.

Love you sister!

Peace n love,

Even for front row tickets (COOL for you though) to Bob I am not going there.  And I have no children.  My niece and nephew don't have computers so I have no one to monitor.  I need to hang with Charlie or Keef.  :-)

Rock on Nelly!

Nothing here to say you have to go there.
I just look to point out the fun I've had there.
Isn't that what life is all about?

if you join facebook, i would suggest not using your real name....if you do you will get friend requests from high school classmates...and then you will find out how their farm is doing every $#@!ing 15 minutes....

Oh but Bucky, I enjoyed seeing your cute little  "kids camp photos"

Jo- yeah it is kinda a waste of time, but so is hanging out here.  I did it to keep up with my grown children.  I have learned more about what they are doing and their friends from facebook then talking to them on the phone or in person (I was blessed with boys)!  Yes, it is a sad world we live in where the internet is our communication tool rather than face to face conversation.

I hate the "games and quizzes" but every once in a while I have a weak moment..

On a positive note,  I have kept up to date with my favorite musical groups and interests via facebook.  You can hear it hot off the presses. I use facebook like Gazza uses his 100+  internet bookmarks he checks at least daily! ;)

I'm on there and I can't believe the people who I have found and who have found me. Friends from grade school, high school, the Army etc. It's amazing.

I enjoy getting to know a different side of him and I hope he feels the same. ;)

right back at ya, Paula!  some fences get erected here on the RO Board that pale when seen against the whole......and I too have found people who I've lost touch with for decades through Facebook (my first gf!!).  I got an FB message 3 weeks ago from someone asking me if I was the son of my [pop's name] and saying he grew up with him in the 40's and 50's and moved away in '59 or so but they were best friends....in those days, moving away was MOVING AWAY....anyway, I hooked them up and they've picked up after 50 years!!  Sorry to sound like an endorsement, but FB has value.....it has faults too...lots...but it has value...

Facebook really is a double edged sword.  It's great for keeping in touch with friends that have moved out of town, in our case family that lives in Europe.  My best friend from grade school and jr. high reconnected through it.  I had to move away and we lost touch.  We erased 20+ years in days.  It's like a lot of things on the internet.  Take the good with the bad.

Yes, I’m on Facebook. I was fairly reluctant, but a friend of mine created an account for me and such. I’m not a regular viewer though, I must admit. I maybe check it once-or-twice a week to see what’s happening or to partake in the online games.

Ben (Flairville)'s regular outbursts are comedy gold and worth logging in for in their own right, although not for the easily offended or faint hearted.  ;D

Well, I’m not faint hearted or easily offended – reckon I’ll be OK!  :D

I have added you btw, though if your workplace is anything like mine, you won’t have access!

Ben's rantings are pure 'Derek & Clive' material at times.  :booze

B/c I now can barely post here, or be able to answer to an email daily, b/c unfortunately I am getting always more worst day by day, healthy talking.. no energy at all.. cant hardly move myself from my home, cannot walking almost no more, I at least enjoy post on FB some vids.
And that is all. I find some difficulty when the people start to send me too much hugs, smiles, Rolling Stones items.. blue obsessions... and you soon or later have to turn to them the same.
Thanks god, no farmville, yoville, countrylife.. or whatever could be. they're hidden.
have find some interesting friends over threre, but no one of them came from RO.
They can be on my list, but the fences always existing. You cant get rid of them.
If one wants, over there is sure fun.

I really appreciate the dialogue about FB.  Now I understand why it appeals to some people.  That is better than being in total darkness regarding the subject.  Thanks everyone for sharing!

I had to go a long ways back to find this thread for Facebook.
I de-activated my account there, somebody has hi-jacked my identity & sent out messages to 14 of my friends about a spam for iphones & ipads, if somebody can do that, what else can they do??? so bye bye Facebook, a friend told me their getting sued for allowing private information to be leaked out.

Well I just recently joined after much reluctance and procarastination. I've heard about the privacy concerns. Hopefully it doesn't become a problem for me. I'm not on there much....and I'm not that interesting enough to have my identity stold anyway.LOL.
