Title: Tony Sanchez Book. Post by Heart Of Stone on Mar 2nd, 2010 at 8:09am
I was thinking about reading 'Up & Down With The Rolling Stones" again, for those who read it, how do you feel about it? think it's very accurate? or just a bunch of made up stuff.

Great book. Lots of exaggeration.

I read it and enjoyed reading it. I suppose there's exageration in it.
Has Keith ever mentioned it? |

Keith said Tony coould barely write his own name much less a book - he dod refer to it once as marianne's "embellished memories"
anyway imho , tho there may be a bit of exaggeration it mostly rings true - there's nothing in it that makes you think that must be absolute nonsense it has some hilarious anecdotes - e.g. nothing says 70's rock star excess like the tale of keith crashing his hover-craft into his moat down at redlands |

the dirt and nothing but the dirt
even if its half true--which I doubt--his spin is so negative.....and you can't forget that story where Tony claims to be with Marianne and another chick rolling under a fur blanket...in his mind maybe! |

yes i remeber that bit - not having a copy to hand - still ...you never know ..tony wasn't there because he was a nice guy...he had his hand on some serious drug handles (otherwise why would he be there - surely not for his musicianship) ...and when it comes to smack even anita would give it up for a score
yet i know what you mean ... as i said keith said "ėmbellished" |

This was the first Stones book I ever read. Read it when it first came out. He seemed to tell what he could if that means anything,
some of it one has to read between the lines. Thought it was really interesting. |

Read it about 28 years ago, still remember it vividly, that says a lot ! I doubt he made anything up, why would he have to? The episode about Keith telling him to have a guy killed because he allowed Anita to be jailed and raped in Kingston still scares me! Apparently Tony kept the money ;-)
Not too many sour grapes either, even the end when he says he realizes his time's up when his backstage pass for a 1976 concert (Knebworth?) doens't let him make it to Keith. |

"If Tony'd had any balls and loyalty, he'd have had the bastard killed. Instead, a book that reeks of rotten grapes and self-centeredness, like he'd had all the talent and judgment secretly all along. Shite and bollocks! He's not worth wind from Marianne Faithfull's arse - and I'm hardly jealous, thank you." -- Ronnie Kray

Yes, the dog named Syph! Can't forget Brian saying "I'm going to kill myself" and jumping into the moat and Mick jumping in after him. |

The Kray Brothers were notorious gangsters, or something like that. It might be on the Internet.

A hilarious book. I love it. I got the original. I recall Keith not denying most of it, but more upset that a "mate" would go and "lag" to the world.
There's also a line during the making of Exile that says those staying at Keith's got a bill. Wyman asked what the bill was, and was told it was for food & accomodation. I vividly remember Sanchez sarcastically saying during the 69 tour "...even Bill Wyman could get a head job" when they were in L.A. Which, as we now know, shows how little Mr. Sanchez knew of Bill's extra curricular activities. |

Speaking of head job, Bill got a head job from some girl using toothpaste because he had erectile problems.
