Title: Was Mick really "So Vain?" Post by Edith Grove on Feb 26th, 2010 at 3:03pm
Apparently not:
Simon names who's 'So Vain' Feb. 26, 2010, 9:54 AM EST WENN- Carly Simon has ended nearly 40 years of speculation by finally naming the man who inspired her hit "You're So Vain" - her target was gay record label boss David Geffen. The song, which catapulted the singer to fame in 1972, was rumored to be about one of her ex-boyfriends, who include Hollywood legend Warren Beatty and rocker Sir Mick Jagger, but she had persistently refused to name the man behind the track. But Simon has now revealed who was so vain by giving fans a cryptic clue in an acoustic version of the song, which features on her upcoming album "Never Been Gone." She tells Uncut magazine, "You know what, I'm just going to tell you this. The answer is on the new version of 'You're So Vain,' on my new record 'Never Been Gone.' There's a little whisper and it's the answer to the puzzle." The singer whispers Geffen's name backwards in the track, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper. Geffen ran Simon's Elektra Records label at the time of the song's release and instead of being about a failed relationship, the lyrics are now thought to hint at the singer's lingering resentment after Geffen allegedly put more effort into promoting rival star Joni Mitchell. http://music.msn.com/music/article.aspx?news=485058>1=28102 |

The "whispered" revelation is on a forthcoming re-recording of the song ... which, who knows, may turn up in grocery stores. |

I always thought it was about MICK ~ the part where he looks in the mirror sounded like something MICK would do! But I'm not surprised, Simon would not give MICK the satisfaction!

If the rumors are true...Carly did in fact give Mick satisfaction at the Memory Motel. |

Carly is a terrific singer and smokin' hot, but if she thought she deserved the same level of exposure and promotion as Joni Mitchell, then we know who's really "so vain."

Where is this coming from? Love both of them. Joni is legend! Apples and Oranges with plenty of room on the plate for both, imo! |

I never knew much about CS...except that she is/was the heiress to the Simon and Schuester (sp) family fortune etc...
but the last 2 times that she promoted her music...she gave the most insightful, candid, funny, and honest interviews on Howard Stern's radio program... She spoke candidly about her breast cancer...her marriage to JT...her family...EVERYTHING...she really made an impression on me...I have been listening to her since... |

I remember that song so well when it came out, one guy I used to know thought she was singing "Your So Plain"

Title: Re: Was Mick really "So Vain?" Post by GotToRollMe on Feb 27th, 2010 at 12:30pm It was pretty obvious she wasn't singing about Mick, especially considering he contributed backing vocals on the song, most notably the chorus. |

I thought it was pretty obvious where this is coming from. According to the article, Carly thought she was entitled to the same level of attention from Geffen as Joni. Ergo, she thought she was on the same level of artistic significance as Joni. It's as if (insert name of your favorite second tier rock band here: AC/DC, for example) decided to claim it was as significant as the Rolling Stones. Hardly apples and oranges; rather, winesaps (a remarkably good apple) vs. red delicious (more commercially popular but far less interesting taste). |

That explains it a bit, but it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense that the song is about a gay guy, considering the song's imagery. Very catty, in any case.
I'll agree that Joni is catalogue-worthy, and Carly is greatest hits. |
