I had seen him a few times over the past years at the 930 Club in DC...didn't know he was that "relevant" to play MSG...could he have done that w/o Slowhand?

Really enjoyed the shows...din't know much about him other than the 1 or 2 albums from college...you know...the two that everyone had back in 1982...

It must have been great seeing JB at 9:30 club.  Do you know what year that was?

I saw John Paul Jones at Jaxx in Sweet VA a few years back.

No all the other venues are theatres. Works for me though. This way I don't have to go to San Jose or Oakland. Nice to have an act actually play in San Francisco.

Nice.  I'm sorry I missed it.   I like the 9:30 club's V Street location also.   I just saw Jules Casablancas there.

Saw him at the Warfield in 2001, a fabulous show, pretty "metallic" though, that's when he had Jennifer Batten assisting him. I prefer the current incarnation of his band, more subtle playing, I take it the Australian bass goddess will be on hand again ? EDIT : nope, looks like another chick Rhonda Smith, darn.

Good to see he's experienced a revival of sorts since 2001, at the time he'd fallen into "cult" territory in spite of the pretty inspired "metal" albums "Mama Said" and the other one whose name escapes me "Your hands", maybe ?

I don't get the attraction of Beck. A lot of players I dig really love his playing, but  he seems to play it a bit safe. Granted he's a fine, fine player - but not real strong in the "songs" department I reckon.

I'm very big on instrumental playing/improv./jamming, and I must say- I saw a thing on PBS last year where he was playing with just drums/bass (who was that cool/gorgeous/monster bass player gal he was with?), and it was pretty exciting (granted it was only 2 or 3 extended instrumentals).

But Beck seems to have great cache in the rock n' roll scene, probably from his time in the Yardbirds (greatly overrated in all mutations, IMO. Sorry).

Legend is- Beck was considered as a replacement for Mick Taylor; and when asked to attend the 'Black and Blue' sessions, he declined saying "the Stones can't play funk".

Sour grapes? Dunno...but certainly one of the dumbest and most musically uneducated things I've ever heard a player of his caliber say. If he was indeed serious.

If you saw him play the Beatles Medley (and his other playing) during the Rock Hall of Fame show on HBO you would "get" his genius. If you don't its a matter of opinion but his brilliance can't be discarded.

You're probably right, but I just remember a couple albums with Jan Hammer from the late '70's that my buddies were always playing ('Wired' and another one), and thought the stuff was cold and soulless.
I might well hear that stuff differently now; and I do think he'd be great in a proper 'band' type of scenerio, with some great songwriting, singing, lyrics, etc. (but not the Stones, for some reason).

And, indeed, nearly every good guitar player I've ever worked with for the last 25 years has really dug him (usually his Yardbirds work), but I just haven't "got" it yet... and, yeah- I DO need to listen more.

Blow by Blow! That was the other one!

Certain muso buddies at the time were always playing that and Wired, saying "...listen to this...ready?... ok, right here...hear that?...k, listen to this..."

Me: "Turn that shit off. And it's a lame drummer".

But I am going to get cheap copies of those two, they'll probably sound pretty good to me nowadays.

funny you say that, i bought Blow by Blow a couple of years ago based on my memory of it from the 70's (hardly having heard it since then)- in particular the Stevie Wonder tune "Cause We've Ended as Lovers " which I always thought was great

on revsiting it i was inclined towards your opinion a bit - apart from aforementioned "Lovers" (which still sounded good) a lot of it did sound a little "cold and soulless" as you put it - funk without the fire - and after a couple of plays i put it in the rack and haven't played it since

anyway given this thread I may dig it out and have yet another listen

Beck will be here on March - i think i will check it out

yup. I think all that Jan Hammer spidery Moog and Arp synth stuff kinda turned me off, that stuff was so ubiquitous in the '70's and I was young and wanted more guitars, songs, danceable rhythms, and general wildness (hence the Clash, Pistols, Ramones, etc. And the Stones latest always did it for me).
But things change, sensebilities and tastes, also a bit of nostalgia can't hurt. So I'll check those two out again.

btw- where you at in Oz- Melbourne, Sidney, Brissy? Got a couple internet buddies in Melb...

my thoughts as well - it wasn't Beck's guitar that let Blow by Blow down rather the synth noodling and the rather "lame" (as you put it) drumming

i am in Adelaide

Yeah- no complaints about Beck's guitar work; just the context I always hear it in. Very solid and inventive; I just want to hear him with a good rock n'roll band (like the track from that Pretenders album from a few years ago).

And g'arvo, mate.
