Title: What If  ?????
Post by lavendar on Jan 4th, 2010 at 5:30pm
The Rolling Stones went on tour singing Mostly ballads with  a just a few faster songs?

like Heart of Stone compared to Rough Justice

Ya know I could go for that-- encore CYHMK

:boringI would like to see them again too.

Wouldnt bother me.

I think it does them a disservice - and they're partly culpable in this themselves when it comes to choosing the content of the songs they perform - that so many people think that all they have to offer are these 'grand rock anthems'.

They dont hardly ever even play blues music at their shows anymore, for goodness sake.

The Stones are a far more musically diverse band than they've ever really been given credit for.

It would be grand...ballads, blues.....but in a smaller, more intimate venue.

Since The Stones are getting older, they might slow it down and add more ballads and blues numbers to the setlists. I remember MICK saying Angie was a good song to catch their breath after doing some fast songs (during the ABB tour) so they already use the slow songs for this purpose.

Yes.

They're going to have to slow the pace of the show down (as well as downsize the scale of it) if they're going to keep playing for another few years. Mick might be an incredible athlete for man of his age, but he can't run around catwalks on football stadiums forever.

Unfortunately at the moment he's reluctant to sing too many ballads on any given night because (going by what Chuck Leavell has suggested) he doesn't want the audience intensity to drop too much - and he also doesn't like singing more than one per night if he's having any trouble with his voice.

i think this would be a great idea for an unplugged session for some tv or vh1 or mtv...say like an hour long with a few questions sprinkled in.

____

Amen.

These guys have created some amazing tunes over the years - and much of NOT of the stadium rock variety.

A scaled down, slower paced, more intimate tour would be awesome.

Take it back to your roots boys - bring on the BLUES...

Amen.  Some of my "indie" buddies (who think most classic rock is too "poppy" and stay away from anything even close to mainstream) will hear something like 2000LYFH - and say, "wow this is a lot cooler than their usual boring pop stuff."  If only they knew about songs OTHER than those on 40 Licks, like, say, any of their blues numbers, or their punky album cuts from the late 70s/early 80s, or their folky numbers (Prodigal Son)...

Fine by me...not gonna happen though. I'm happy when they announce another tour, and I'll be even happier when they cut back on the warhorses for a bit. IMO 5 would be enough for a 19 song set. There's plenty of stuff in the catalogue that would be great live. I mean: She Was Hot worked great, but it took them 23 years to bring it to the stage. But I'm wandering off from the topic.

I'd love to see a ballad-set: Play With Fire, Heart Of Stone, Lady Jane, Shine A Light, Sweet Virginia, Beast Of Burden, Memory Motel, Melody, Worried About You, Almost Hear You Sigh, Wild Horses, YCAGWYW, Winter, No Expectations, Salt Of The Earth, Love In Vain, Prodigal Son, Torn And Frayed, Let It Loose, I Got The Blues..that would be a nice set, Wild Horses and YCAGWYW being the songs for the encore...

Agree.

One thing that often gets lost when considering the Stones is that even their mid-tempo and slow ballady stuff rocks hard- not many people have accomplished that wonderful trick. They play Rock n' Roll, not "rock". There is a BIG difference, and the Stones know just how to toe that line. Their slow stuff rocks AND rolls. Like a rocking cradle. Like dancing with your baby.

Bring on:
Memory Motel
Through the Lonely Nights
Pain in My Heart
Tell Me
All About You
Loving Cup
Out of Time
I Got the Blues
Coming Down Again
Worried Abou You
Dandelion
Child of the Moon

For the fast rockers:
All the Way Down (very underrated; great pathos and interesting arrangement)
Rocks Off (learn it properly, though!)
Dance Little Sister (stand in for all the big hedonistic rockers)
Mona (don't "rock" it up too much; retain that heavy atmosphere that made it even greater than Bo's original)
Jigsaw Puzzle (great mid-tempo could really take off with a great extended instrumental coda. Woody- you up for some serious slide work?)
Let it Bleed (another great mid-tempo; but get Ian MacLagen to play the piano. Sorry Chuck)
Thirty Days (gotta have some Chuck Berry- learn this one. Shouldn't be too hard!)

Something like that...

Bless you.

A very wise post...

Funny thing about set lists. Brian Johnson just bagged fans of the band for starting a petition for them to alter their set lists. Basically told to fuck off.

He also told Geldof & Bono where to go to.

But he aint Bon.
