Title: Cash/Carter question (nsc)
Post by Starbuck on Jan 2nd, 2010 at 2:24am
any carter family fans out there?

our dearly departed SS sent me a johnny cash care package a few years back for my victorious "gay sailor" picture in his johnny cash picture contest (i was the only entrant). SS may be gone, but i have been listening to and loving the hell out of those discs for years...

anyhoo, one of the discs was of cash and the carter family and i'm not sure where or when it was recorded.  it's got a ton of old folk standards and carter family tunes on it..."engine 143"..."keep on the sunny side"..."banks of the ohio"..."wabash cannonball"...etc as well as a bunch of old tunes i've never heard of before. anyone have any guesses as to the album/bootleg? it's june and the cousins...carter family generation two...

just hoping this disc is common knowledge so's i can research me some more cash!

My late older brother Johnny was a big Carter Family fan, he played guitar to go with his singing, "The Wildwood Flower" was one of the first songs I learned on guitar myself, but then I learned Rock & Roll & 12 bar blues, I like old C & W, don't care for modern Country, but at that time back in the 60's, I didn't like C & W at all.
It funny listening to old recordings compared to today, they sound like they were recorded over a telephone.

well I have Carlene and Roseanne , some June with Johnny, and whoever sings with Johnny on the American and Unearthed recordings.....

You DID mean this "Carter Family"??

Maybe if Gazza goes up in his attic he can dig out their original recordings Box Set for you- if not amazon has it ($25.99)  I am sure you will find some songs with Johnny singing with them.   Good luck!

Christ I'm doing a Gazza!!!! :forfucksake

You are an educator, Bucky? ;)

Wiki Wiki.....
"1987, reunited sisters June Carter Cash and Helen and Anita Carter, along with June's daughter Carlene Carter, appeared as the Carter Family and were featured on a 1987 television episode of Austin City Limits along with Johnny Cash." (perhaps a torrent of this?)

and "Unearthed" only has one Carter Family performance on it.

Now I am off to the gym (I'll never get that 20 minutes back-but at least I got to finish my coffee)...

Actually Johnny never sang with the original Carter Family, they go back to the 1940's, possible the 30's, I think Maybelle was the only member still alive when Johnny started dating her daughter June, Sara the other member was born in 1898, we're talking very old here (i'm going by a article in Guitar player magazine) it says between 1927 & 1934 The Carter Family recorded most of their best known songs for Victor (RCA), so it even goes back to the 20's.

The original Carter family consisted of the husband and wife team of AP and Sara Carter and Sara's cousin Maybelle. They were an act for about thirty years starting in the mid 20s, but it was on and off again due to AP and Sara's marriage falling apart, I believe. Not sure of the specifics. Maybelle and her daughters (of which June was one) kept up the family tradition fifteen/twenty years later.

the recording i have (which i sent to meg, i believe) is the daughters of maybelle and johnny cash. not sure the date, which is why i was asking.

I saw the Carter Sisters with Johnny Cash in 1989.
There's a sbd from the 3/20/89 show in Minneapolis that includes the Carter Sisters' set.
Great stuff...

They also toured in the 80's as The Carter Family, with June's daughter Carlene.
Don't think that Johnny's daughter Rosanne ever performed with them.

I dont think she did either. Not touring anyway. However, there's a 'Carter Family Fold' near Clinch Mountain in Virginia which is a site dedicated to preserving that genre of music and where the various members of the family would perform from time to time in recent years. Johnny Cash actually gave his final performance there.

Carlene toured as part of the 'Carter Sisters', which comprised herself, her mother (June) and June's sisters Anita and Helen.

This was in the late 80s when she had quit recording for a few years before relaunching her career around 1990.

June had two daughters - Carlene Carter (with her first husband Carl Smith) and Rosie Nix Adams (with her second husband), both of whom had recording careers (Rosie died in 2003, the same year as June Carter and Johnny Cash). June also had a son with Johnny Cash, John Carter Cash, who is a producer and songwriter.

Carlene's just relaunched her career again a couple of years ago after a pretty horrendous decade in her personal life. I'm a big fan of hers and am going to see her next month. I met her last time she played here in '97 - she was really nice and a real hoot.

Carlene wrote a song called 'Me and The Wildwood Rose' in 1993 which was an autobiographical song about watching Maybelle Carter (her grandmother and June's mother) sing when she (Carlene) and her step-sister Rosie were children.

'Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters' toured with Johnny Cash in the '60s.

Maybelle died in 1978. AP Carter died in 1960 and his wife Sara, the final member of the original Carter family died in 1979.

My Mom and Dad Saw Them once at this Place  Clinch Mountain in Virginia
It was a big thrill for them,  They got to meet Johnny and June. A big thrill for the Parents. Sorry I did not go. Mom said the place was like in the middle of this beautiful valley, and it was raining to beat the band. They were under a big  tin roof and it almost drown out the vocals. I believe they said that it was not amplified?
