1. The Rolling Stones
Total Gross: $869,471,325
Number of Shows: 264
Number of Sell-Outs: 190
Total Attendance: 8,236,586

2. U2
Total Gross: $844,157,925
Number of Shows: 288

Not a bad decade's work for The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band.

Or U2 for that matter. They sold out every show...

Another little statistic that may be of interest :

These figures represent a career total of US ticket sales - this does NOT include extras such as merchandise, etc.

#1....Rolling Stones.......$1,737,000,000
#2....U2........................1,298,643,000.....tour break (resumes June 2010)
#3....Bruce Springsteen..........1,146,718,925
#4....Celine Dion...........1,017,000,000
#5....Madonna.................990,427,000

In 2009, Springsteen became only the second act to pass $1 billion in ticket sales for the US. However, U2 overtook that figure before the end of the year

The Stones' figure will probably never be topped. Realistically, only U2 have a prayer of reaching it. And that is highly unlikely. Another world tour on a similar scale to the last one will almost certainly see the Stones pass the $2 billion mark.

When you consider that the Stones' offshore tax arrangements mean that they only pay about 1.5% in income tax (whereas any other UK earner of a similar magnitude would be expected to pay around 40% tax) and the cost of their tours are largely underwritten by corporate sponsorship, it makes their ticket pricing system sadly even more inexcusable.

I guess the Stones would've sold every ticket if they had had a more mellow ticket price. But if you make that kind of money, you probably don't care much about a seat that didn't get sold.

Because they put on a GREAT show...make themselves accessable to the audience...and have good singles and utilize today's tech ( thew best stadium sound EVER!!!) (The best screens EVER) ...as well as stay in touch with their fans thru their web site and such...which they update daily for the tour with nice clips and backstage footage...

ever visit RS.scum ???
ever sit in the nose bleeds and feel like you were part of the show???
Did you really like  the singles from BB???

U2 rally does try to connect with their audience...handing the mic to a fan to sing along?!? Grabbing a child of a fan to join Bono on stage...

I would give my left and right  one (I have twins) to have my girls be that kid with Mick!!!

Like the band's previous Zoo TV Tour, PopMart was another huge success in terms of revenue. For example, on September 20, 1997, the band performed in front of over 150,000 people in Reggio Emilia,[Italy, and set the new world record at the time for having the most attendees at a concert for a single performer.[44] Although the tour was the second-highest grossing of 1997 (behind The Rolling Stones' Bridges to Babylon Tour) with revenues of just under $80 million, PopMart cost more than $100 million to produce.[45]
wikipedia
The crowd was huge but them was been great. no fights, no problems at all.
But after it, I'd changed my mind about them.; Zoo Europe was been enough for me.
But they work and join their audience. You feel you're there, part of it.
I would tell the same of the Stones.
