Title: Re: Otis Redding Appreation thread Post by left shoe shuffle on Dec 10th, 2009 at 8:54pm I've always appreated Otis Redding. A gifted songwriter and dynamic performer, The King Of Soul died much too soon. Steve Cropper tells a great story about meeting Otis in "Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story". He was the driver/roadie for Johnny Jenkins and The Pinetoppers, who were recording at Stax in Memphis. At the end of the session Otis begged the house band (Booker T. & The MG's) to give him a listen. That, of course, ended his driving career... Check out 'Satisfaction' from the 1966 Stax-Volt European Tour - www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQszoQJT0Tc And one that he wrote - www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAh-FXX-MYI |

One of the few artists to whom the Stones' versions don't do justice. What a voice and performer. Love seeing him on the VH1 Classic.

Great pics. Nice thread. Otis was the dog's bollocks. What a singer.
Don't necessarily agree that the Stones didnt do his music - 'Thats How Strong My Love Is' on the Licks tour was especially great. It was just a bit different to Redding's version, that's all. (I know Otis didnt write it, but his version came out just before the Stones did it for 'Out of our Heads' so I assume it was the inspiration) I think Mick said in the 60's that he didnt usually prefer other people's covers of his own songs, but that Otis' version of 'Satisfaction' was an exception. |

THSMLI, I remember getting that DVD for my birthday and playing that one from the club show over and over and over. And I did love Mr. Pitiful in DC '05. I was thinking more along the lines of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and their studio covers. Speaking of covers, Cat Power's IBLYTL is great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22BMhj6lPus&feature=related |

I was listening to Otis this weekend on a long drive to San Antonio, Austin...
He was authentic and remained countrified... did real soul music exist before Stax? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZxN9iQM7OY |
