tAccording to Brernard Fowler the Stones are going to start the tour in Buenos Aires, he will be the opening act!

In a recent interview he said

Question...Is Bernie Fowler actually considered a viable opening act for the Stones? Even in Argentina? Does he have a fanbase down in Sur America for this kind of slot?

Here in El Norte, as you all know, the openers are the Johnny Come Lately...ie: Kanye, Blue October (who?), Shins, Black Eyed Peas etc.... This is true with few exceptions ie: Alice Cooper...

I think Bernard is so sick of questions about the next Stones tour that he's now going to say, "It will kick off here next year" regardless of what city he is in at the time.

Bernard is playing tomorrow with his local band ("Friends With Privilegies"), yes... he has an Argentinian band and this is his 4th visit as soloist. Of curse most of his audience here are Stones fans.
All I can say for sure is that I have seen here two times, he is a good frontman, his band is good and hot and that he is growing with every visit.

About the new, I don't know what to think but I have my fingers crossed!

Yeah well I've seen Bernard and his different bands in club shows and most of the people who were there were Stones people and Bernard is a spin-off act. I doubt it that Bernard's band is big enough to be an opening act for the Stones, considering the acts they usually come up with.  And it would be an inconvenience for the Stones to replace Bernard as a back-up singer! Heaven knows that Bernard is a really good fit with the Stones, but who knows, maybe they are giving Bernard a career break! It seems unlikely but I'll be happy if it's true. I love Bernard, he is a SERIOUS MAN, and NICE! Oh yeah! Big hugs and kisses for Bernard! XOXOXOXO Maybe a trip to Argentina, no, no it's too wild there. I remember seeing the pics from the last RS show with fans bleeding and fighting and damn near crazy!

I gotta say I agree this time. I can't see a tour starting here. I'm not so sure I can see a Stones tour starting any where but The States these days (as you mentioned for the aforementioned reasons).

Kinda think he is just babbling. What's he supposed to do? Perform as the opening act then go undress and come back out and back-up The Stones for their entire show? That would be odd and silly...  I'm assuming he'll be playing the back-up role with them next time out...?

Though I don't think he was serious this wouldn't necessarily be unprecendented - I believe Billy Preston opened the 1973 tour then played later that evening. I've seen similiar things at various non-Stones shows.

Logistically, if they play South America, there's really little alternative.

Economy too weak to play arena shows to fans paying US-sized ticket prices, highs costs involved in transporting equipment there and there isnt enough money in it for them to justify staying more than a few days and playing multiple shows.

Its telling that for all the talk of South America being a favourite audience, they bypassed the region entirely on the Licks tour and then on the ABB played a total of just 3 shows - 2 in Buenos Aires (which were so oversubscribed they could have played about 5, and which led to riots with fans being mugged outside the stadium for their tickets) and a one-off show in Rio which, while it was a 'free' gig was bankrolled by the local government and filmed for cinema and DVD release enabling the venture to turn into a profitable one.  

There was more money to be made playing arena shows in US cities they'd already visited, so they went back there immediately afterwards.

The Stones will always put profit margins WAY before things like artistic concerns or rewarding fanbases - even when they play a theatre show (eg The Beacon) and keep the prices down, the motive was still financial as the shows were being filmed for a movie - and a tour opening in Argentina in a football stadium will unfortunately barely cause a ripple in the entertainment industry worldwide, and especially in North America. With a tour likely to have high ticket prices as usual AND take place in the middle of a worldwide recession, they're going to need all the publicity and media attention they can get.

Additionally, the Stones should know by now that touring during the World Cup is disastrous for ticket sales. Theyve had problems in 1990, 98 and 2006 selling tickets in countries which were competing in or hosting the World Cup. Whilst the World Cup is in South Africa in June-July, they do NOT want to be competing with it in any way, especially in countries like Argentina and Brazil.

The singer Bernard Fowler, Rolling Stones’ historic chorus man, said that the  emblematic band would return to Argentina next year.

It would be the band’s fourth visit in the country to play along with its Argentine band (Pilo Gomez, Gonzalo Lattes, Chucky from Ipola Fabian Von Zorrito Quintiero and Melena Sanchez) in Niceto next Friday, with whom it keeps presenting Friends with privileges, their last album.

Fowler confirmed that the Rolling Stones plan to return in 2010: “I’m going to return here next year, to play in a much bigger place, as the opening gig before the Rolling Stones, at the beginning of their new world tour”, and hje added: “It’s not so long for next year!”

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts came to the country for the last time in 2006, along with “Bigger Bang Tour”. Fowler has been the band’s chorus man for the past 20 years

LOL, well more or less, he plays covers and his own songs, last Friday in between the covers he played JJF, "Going to a Go Go", "She's so cold", "Miss You", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and "Josephine" by Ronnie Wood with Ekaterina on the screen  :o and switching to "E... E.... Ekaterine" instead of "Jo... Jo... Josephine"
