For anyone lucky (or rich) enough to get tickets for the 'Rock n Roll Hall of Fame' concert at Madison Square Garden next week, a little birdie is telling me that there are very strong inklings of a duet between a well-known Dublin-born singer/anti-poverty activist and an English friend of his who is best known as the lead singer of a very well-known R&B combo who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2012.

Other acts confirmed for this event include : Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, CSN & Y, Simon & Garfunkel and Stevie Wonder.

Guests include B.B. King (performing with Stevie Wonder), John Legend (performing with Stevie Wonder), Smokey Robinson (performing with Stevie Wonder), James Taylor (performing with CS & N), Jackson Browne (performing with CS & N), Bonnie Raitt (performing with CS&N), Little Richard, Dion (performing with Paul Simon), Little Anthony And The Imperials (performing with Paul Simon), Sting, John Fogerty (performing with Springsteen), Tom Morello (performing with Springsteen), Sam Moore (performing with Springsteen) and Darlene Love (performing with Springsteen).

Eric Clapton was scheduled for 10/30, but had to cancel for medical reasons.

Not sure if that'll impact their performances.

A replacement act is in the works.
The aforementioned British R&B singer would do nicely in a pinch.

I'm signed up as a seat filler for both shows. Free tickets, behind the stage.

No word yet - and since it's the same folks that had the drawings for the Levon Helm and Springsteen "Spectacle With Elvis Costello" tapings, I'm not holding my breath...

The two nights are being made into an HBO special to be aired on Sunday, November 29. So we can watch the 'best of' it on TV, as I'm sure they will edit it and show 'highlights'. It really is a huge line-up, so I'm excited to have a chance to see it without having to spend the big bucks!

and

I dont care if JB doesnt come back! If he doesnt want to be here, than why do you want him? Let it go, man! Rocks Off lives on with or without JB!

Hell yeah ~ this is a very exciting gig happening! My 3 favorite men, MICK, Bono, and Lenny Kravitz all in the same room, same night, and I'll be creaming in my jeans for sure, mouth wide open, in a State of Shock! Why that song? Why NOT, it will be shocking! I'll try to sneak up close to the stage, but MSG has actual NYC cops as security and those guys are rough, so it's not easy to upgrade there. I'll have some pics and vids for Rocks Off as soon as I can unglue my panties off...ahahaha yeah it IS entirely possible......and it's been a while since I've seen MICK, so yeah, I'm ready.

The show is starting at 7:30 PROMPT! I think it's going to be a long night so they are starting early and on time. I'm planning to get into the city by 5:45 or 6, free street parking near Walter's bar starts at 6 PM if I'm lucky enough to find a spot, Stones people are meeting there before/after the show.

U2 ended their tour in Vancouver last night.
Seems unlikely that their rumored guest was there, too.

U2 in Vancouver yesterday ~ good call. So is it possible MICK was rehearsing with Buddy Guy and/or Jeff Beck? They were the ones who were supposed to play with Clapton and since MICK is replacing him maybe there wont be a duet with Bono since U2 is playing as a band? You would think MICK should be doing a CLAPTON SONG!!

Clapton's Lineup
Eric Clapton
With Eric Clapton's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist on March 6, 2000, he became the first musician to have been inducted three times. He was first honored as a member of The Yardbirds in 1992, then with Cream in 1993, and finally as a solo artist in 2000. While his stints with the groups were relatively brief — he stayed with the Yardbirds only a year and a half, and Cream lasted barely two years — Clapton has been a solo artist for three decades, beginning with the release of Eric Clapton in 1970. Even Derek and the Dominos, the short-lived quartet that cut the classic Layla...and Other Love Songs in 1970, was less a band of equals (à la Cream) than a Clapton-piloted project that bore his highly personalized stamp.

As a solo artist, Clapton has brought his singing and songwriting to the fore while maintaining his stature as rock's preeminent guitarist. Demonstrating a remarkable resilience, Clapton has managed to establish himself as a vital, hitmaking presence in every decade. Entering his fourth decade as a solo artist, Eric Clapton remains a relevant, creative force in popular music.

Jeff Beck
Jeff Beck is one of the three noted guitarists to have recorded with the band The Yardbirds. Rolling Stone ranked him as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." Much of Beck's recorded output has been instrumental, and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues-rock, heavy metal, jazz fusion and (currently) a blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Beck has earned wide critical praise and four Grammy awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Beck has guested at scores of sessions with everyone from Stevie Wonder and Buddy Guy to Tina Turner and Mick Jagger. Most recently, Beck teamed up with another former Yardbirds member and fellow Rock Hall Inductee, Eric Clapton, for two concerts in Japan.

Buddy Guy
Buddy Guy is one of the titans of the blues, straddling traditional and modern forms, as well as musical generations. He's worked with Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Howlin' Wolf, on one hand, and Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Rolling Stones, on the other. There are few notable blues figures that Guy hasn't brushed up against. He was even an influence on Jimi Hendrix.

The genre's most electrifying guitarist, Guy has remained a vital and current musician, moving blues forward without losing sight of its roots. He's renowned for his raw, blistering vocals and high-voltage guitar playing. He plays a Fender Stratocaster, employing feedback, distortion and extreme string-bending. He spent much of the Sixties on the venerable Chess label and thereafter recorded for Vanguard, Atco, Silvertone and others.

Guy attained great stature within blues circles over the course of three decades, but his career broke wide open in 1991 with the release of Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. This landmark release won him a Grammy and five W.C. Handy awards, and he recorded and toured prolifically in its wake. Clapton has proclaimed Guy "by far without a doubt the best guitar player alive... He really changed the course of rock and roll blues."

Jagger isn't replacing Clapton.
He hasn't even been officially confirmed.

It was announced on Monday that Jeff Beck and his band would fill Clapton's slot.

Might Jagger sing with them if he appears?
Sure.

Would he do a Clapton song?
Hells no.

OK back to the U2 theory. MICK as a special guest?

U2
From the beginning, U2 has been a band on a mission. With each album and concert, the Irish quartet has endeavored to create music of lasting worth and substance. U2's best work — which includes War (1983), The Joshua Tree (1987), Achtung Baby (1991) and All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) — stand out as true classics in the rock canon.

Ultimately, what's set U2 apart is the visionary passion of vocalist Paul "Bono" Hewson and the group's music, which mixes rock's visceral energy with artful atmospherics. Having risen to prominence in the early Eighties — a time when the iconic status of rock stars was routinely challenged by skeptical punks and New Wavers — U2 managed to become a stadium-filling phenomenon without sacrificing credibility. While much had changed, important things remained the same: U2 comprised the same four musicians, still holding fast to principles and making inspirational music a quarter century after their humble beginnings in a Dublin high school.
U2 will be performing material from their vast catalog of music and will be inviting special guests onstage for never-before-seen collaborations. Check back soon to see who they'll be performing with.

I agree.  Still the highlight from the Concert for NY.  While I was not there, and certainly there was a terrific lineup, to see these two on a stage of peers stops any show dead to the wall.

Aretha's Lineup
Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin is the undisputed "Queen of Soul" and the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She is a singer of great passion and control whose finest recordings define the term soul music in all its deep, expressive glory. As Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun observed, "I don't think there's anybody I have known who possesses an instrument like hers and who has such a thorough background in gospel, the blues and the essential black-music idiom... She is blessed with an extraordinary combination of remarkable urban sophistication and of the deep blues feeling that comes from the Delta. The result is maybe the greatest singer of our time."

Franklin's greatest triumph — and an enduring milestone in popular music — was "Respect." Her fervent reworking of the Otis Redding-penned number can now be viewed as an early volley in the women's movement. As a measure of her impact, Aretha Franklin has charted more Top Forty singles — forty-five in all, since 1961 — than any other female performer.
Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz is a student of classic rock, soul, funk, and psychedelia. With a huge appetite for all things Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone and the Beatles, Kravitz emerged at the end of the '80s, embracing the music of his childhood. On his first album Let Love Rule, he plays all instruments himself (guitars, bass, organ, drums, etc.). The sound is raw and largely acoustic, just beats, bass lines, and Hammond B-3's, like a collision of Prince and solo John Lennon. Kravitz's albums are high-energy craft and show his mastery of the recording studio. His seminal moments include "Are You Gonna Go My Way," "Mr. Cabdriver," "Stand By My Woman" and "Always On The Run."
Annie Lenox
Annie Lennox was a member of the Eurythmics, one of the greatest of the 1980’s British pop bands. Along with partner Dave Stewart, they created mournful, soulful songs featuring Lennox’s icy, beautiful voice. After the 1990 breakup of the duo, Lennox launched a highly successful solo career. In 1992 she released Diva, a platinum-selling solo album that received three Grammy nominations. Upbeat on the surface but apprehensive underneath, "Walking on Broken Glass" and "Little Bird" updated the classic Eurythmics sound. Yet it is the brooding ballads such as "Why," "Cold" and "The Gift" that truly stand out.

Lennox's supple vocals prove that she is among the finest white soul singers of our time. Her 2007 album, Songs of Mass Destruction, captures the range of her styles, from the rhythmically charged pop of her Eurythmics days to the haunted, longing ballads of her solo career.

The last part of that blurb teases more than just Lenny Kravitz and Annie Lennox:

Aretha Franklin will be performing material from her vast catalog of music and will be inviting these and other special guests onstage for never-before-seen collaborations. Check back soon to see who else she'll be performing with.

So SV you got a ticket too? That's great news! Text me please!

As of a minute ago...there are fine seats avail for $170.00 in the 300's at center ice...There are floor seats as well...i would buy the $2504.50 seat in section2...but I just can't get past that $77.00 convenience fee  ;D

It was rumored today that...it was heard that the certain duo mentioned earlier in this thread was sound-checking/trying out a tribute song called "State of Shock"...

U2 ended their tour in Vancouver last night.
Seems unlikely that their rumored guest was there, too.

I didn't even consider that...Stevie Wonder maybe???
Not only a Stones legacy there...but an MJ connection as well...

Maybe Bono and Mick will re-re-re do Dancing In the Streets...(kidding)

If Mick appears with U2, my guess is they'll do a Stones song - 'IORR'.

Where'd you hear about 'State Of Shock'?

Even more unlikely that they were rehearsing with Stevie Wonder.
He's appearing at tonight's show.

I agree.  Still the highlight from the Concert for NY.  While I was not there, and certainly there was a terrific lineup, to see these two on a stage of peers stops any show dead to the wall.

From an interview with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett:

Hammett also spoke with ExploreMusic about Metallica's upcoming Saturday (October 30th) performance at the second of two concerts in New York City celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Metallica will perform with Lou Reed, Ray Davies of the Kinks and Ozzy Osbourne. Hammett said, "The people behind the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame were so impressed by our induction and our attitude toward the induction and all the good, positive things we had to say about the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame that they actually asked us back to participate in this benefit . . . We're gonna be playing with Ray Davies -- we're gonna be playing 'You Really Got Me' with him; we're gonna be playing with Lou Reed, we're gonna be playing a Lou Reed song; and then we're gonna be playing with Ozzy, we're gonna be playing a Black Sabbath song. And it should be a lot of fun."

Some great Tweets are coming out of the show.

There was a long video montage of past HOF jams, then Tom Hanks introduced Jerry Lee Lewis who played “Whole Lotta Shakin”
CSN (with Steven Stills) did “Woodstock” “Marrakesh” “Almost Cut My Hair” then Crosby said, “I’d like to bring out my favorite singer, Bonnie Raitt and they did “Love Has No Pride”. CSN then did “Midnight Rider” (it’s the anniversary of Duane Allman’s death.

Jackson Browne did “The Pretender” and as he was finishing, James Taylor stolled onstage, acoustic in hand fingerpicking the intro to “Mexico”. James stayed on stage to contribute to perfect 4-part harmonies on CSN’s “Love the One You’re With”. Then Bonnie and James came back to join in on “Teach Your Children.”
Paul Simon opened with “Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes”, “Me and Julio” and “You Can Call Me Al”. Simon brought out Dion who sang “The Wanderer” then CSN cam back to join Simon singing “Here Comes the Sun” –tribute to George Harrison.
Garfunkel joined Paul Simon and they did “Sounds of Silence”, “Mrs. Robinson”, “The Boxer”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”

Stevie Wonder on now doing acoustic “Blowin In The Wind”

Doing a search for show reports I somehow ended up on the wall street journal blog. But here's their latest report on Stevie's set:
10:35 — Smokey Robinson joins Stevie, and they sing “Tracks of my Tears.” Is it wrong that I cringe every time the overly plastic-surgeried Robinson sings the lyric: “Take a good look at my face”?

10:40 — John Legend comes out to join Stevie for “Mercy Mercy Me.”

Here is a review- (obviously mostly of Bruce's performance from BTX'er) .. ;)

Some thoughts on Thursday's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show
by Stan on Oct 30, 2009 5:07 am

"A marathon night of rock and roll was capped off by a unique performance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street at Madison Square Garden on Thurday night/Friday morning.
The show ended at 1:30 a.m., running nearly six hours after beginning close to 7:30 p.m.
Bruce was a great closer to an historic evening which covered many genres of rock and roll.
First I'll talk about Bruce's set, which was part a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band show and part Bruce being the backup band for several legendary performers including three Billy Joel songs with Billy himself.
Bruce and the band took the stage at 11:45 p.m.

Patti was there and they had a three piece horn section which was Ed Manion, Curt Ramm and Clark Gayton (who were all in the Seeger Sessions Band).

"Good evening New York" Bruce said at the band started with:

1. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
Bruce was all over the stage, which was a bit different from his normal stage setup.
"Is there anyone alive out there" Bruce yelled at one point.
Nice opener.

Bruce then asked for the "singers" to come on done and that was Patti Scialfa , Soozie Tyrell , Curtis King, Cindy Mizelle and another woman with red hair who I don't believe was Lisa Lowell (maybe someone can tell us who it was).

"Madison Square Garden, I want you to put your hands together for one of the greatest singers ever, Mr. Sam Moore"
It was sort of the same introduction Bruce did for him at the 2003 Asbury Park Christmas shows.

2. Hold On I'm Comin'
Before the song ended, Sam was pointing to Steve and saying to Bruce "Can I talk to your man there?" and Bruce said "not yet." A minute later Sam yelled: "Play it Steve!" and they went into:

3. Soul Man
These two songs were great. We saw it in Asbury Park in 2003 and now the world will get to see it when this show airs on HBO. You can see how much Bruce respects Sam Moore.

Bruce talked about how he used to go see Sam (with Sam and Dave) at the Satellite Lounge in Fort Dix, N.J. "He's one of the great stage performers and band leaders. I watched him at the Satellite Lounge and lerned so much about being a band leader from him."

Bruce then talked about how all of us are fotunate to be here tonight with some of the problems the country is having with unemployment and healthcare.
"If Woody Guthrie was aloive today, he'd have a lot to write about."
"Now I have a guitar player I want to bring up to play solong my two guitar players" and he introduced
Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine.

4. Ghost of Tom Joad
Same versions that they did in Anaheim in April of 2008 and in LA this past April. Very hot. Tom's guitar had "Arm the Homeless" spraypained on it in big letters.

Bruce then introduced John Fogerty by saying: "One of the greatest singers. I covered his songs in bars when I was 18 and I'm still covering his songs today. He's the Hank Williams of our generation."

5. Fortunate Son
6. Proud Mary
Very good versions. Like when Bruce and John played them together on the Vote For Change Tour in 2004.
"In 1988 I was lucky enough to play with Roy Orbison and he didn't let me down. He reinvented how a pop song is structured," Bruce said. "I wouldn't do this myself so John is going to join me and we'll take a ballpark swing at Pretty Woman."

7. Pretty Woman
"How's it start?" Bruce asked. With the horns. A lot of fun.

"Now I'm going to do a song by that other guy" and Bruce played:
8. Jungleland
Strong version. Garden crowd loved it. A must for a New York show.

"We've been rehearsing with our next guest. She's the voice of some of Phil Spector's greatest songs, Bruce said. "If there's any justice she should be in the Hall of Fame."
And he introduced Darlene Love

9. Fine Fine Boy
Very good. Horns added a lot.

10. Da Do Ron Ron
Six backup singers added to this. How can this not be fun? Ed Manion had a solo.
"Get her in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame now," Bruce said as Darlene left the stage.

Noticed a lot of people were leaving the Garden as it was getting late and many had trains to catch.

"Here's one of the greatest rock and roll songs England has ever produced" and he mentiond Joe Strummer and The Clash.

11. London Calling
Pretty powerful. Tom Morello was back onstage for this.

12. Badlands
Again with Tom Morello. This got the crowd up. "Is there anyone fucking alive?" Bruced yelled at one point.

"Thank you, New York. The Yankees won so we've got to do one now," Bruce said. "Everyone has their own Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their hearts, so here's to your heroes."
Bruce then addressed a group of people who were sitting behind the stage (only a group in one section who were part of the seat fillers, there was no other backstage seating as the stage setup blocked the view.
"Good lord, what did they charge you to sit there?" I hope it was free," Bruce said.

Then Bruce said: "Before the continental divided, New York and Long Island were joined in one land mass. Tonight we're going to have a summit at the Garden. it's the bridge and tunnel summit.
"The way it's going to work is Long Island is going to meet New Jersey on the neutral ground of New York City."
He introduced Billy Joel.
Billy was joined by longtime sax player Richie Cannata and a guitar player.

13. You May Be Right
14. Only The Good Die Young
15. New York State of MInd
Bruce shared the lead vocals with Billy on these songs and it was a great and lot of fun. They set up a piano for Billy toward the front of the stage and I noticed Roy Bittan was playing his during these songs.
It was one of the highlights of the evening for me, as I've been a Billy Joel fan for years. But it was very, very strange to see most of the E Street Band backing up Billy Joel for three of his classics.
At the end of "Only The Good Die Young" Bruce jumped up and sat on Billy's piano. Then Bruce wasn't happy with the way the song ended and said "We can't end it like that." and they continued to play a little more. When the song ended Bruce said: "We were better than that earlier today."'
Crowd was up and dancing to the first two songs and just sat back to enjoy the beauty of "New York State of Mind."

16. Born To Run
Billy Joel stayed onstage and played piano (and Roy played piano also). Billy did some of the lead vocals with Bruce and it just didn't work. I don't believe Bruce has ever had anyone share the lead vocals on Born to Run before and Billy just sounded off key and not right. In my notebook I wrote: "Billy Joel sounds weird on this."

17. Higher And Higher
This song started at 1:21 a.m.
Darlene Love came back out along with John Fogerty, Sam Moore , Tom Morello and Billy Joel. Plus a now four-piece horn section and the backup singers. The entire Garden was up and dancing. A great, great way to end an epic show. At the end Bruce came to the front of the stage with Darlene Love on his right and Sam Moore on his left.
Steven then waved to his side of the stage and Jackson Browne came out with Peter Wolf (his first appearance of the evening) and they sang backup.
Fun, fun song and a hot way to endan incredible evening.

Show over at 1:30 a.m.

A unique set by Bruce and the band. It is something that will be looked at fondly years from now with all the legends that shared the stage. Bruce fans will be proud that it was the E Street Band backing them up. We only got four Bruce songs, but hey that was fine. This was a Hall of Fame evening and we got tons of Hall of Fame moments. Pretty much the whole six hours was a Hall of Fame performance, no pun intended.
Everyone who was there will be telling you years from now that they were in Madison Square Garden on Oct. 29, 2009.

A rundown on the other acts and songs
(thank you to the people who compiled the setlist)
I have some comments on a few things.

7:32 p.m. (Past Induction video clips)
Some awesome clips. Very well put together. George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Bruce, and so many more. I hope they keep this is when this show does air on HBO.

7:47 Intro: Tom Hanks

Jerry Lee Lewis
1. Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On

Video clips

Crosby, Stills, and Nash
2. Woodstock
3. Marrakesh Express
4. Almost Cut My Hair

Bonnie Raitt joins them:
5. Love Has No Pride
6. Midnight Rider

Jackson Browne joins them (Bonnie Leaves):
7. The Pretender
One of the highlights of the evening for me. Just so well done. Heard a lot of others after the show saying how much they enjoyed this.

James Taylor joins them (Jackson leaves)
8. Mexico
9. Love The One You're With
10. Follow?

Crosby Stills & Nash with James/Bonnie/Jackson
11. Teach Your Children

First time I've seen Crosby, Stills and Nash and I enjoyed this set. They are all legends and to see them with Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and James Taylor was excellent.

More video Clips

Paul Simon
12. Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes
13. Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard
14. You Can Call Me Al

Crowd was very much into "Me and Julio" and "You Can Call me Al."

Dion joins Paul
15. The Wanderer
It was fun.

Crosby Stills & Nash join Paul (Dion leaves)
16. Here Comes The Sun (for George)
17. Late In The Evening Alone

Little Anthony & The Imperials
18. Two People In The World

Simon & Garfunkel
19. Sounds of Silence
Another highlight of the evening. Just so well done.
20. Mrs. Robinson/Not Fade Away/Mrs. Robinson
21. The Boxer
22. Bridge Over Troubled Water
Again a highlight. Wow. Beautiful.
23. Cecelia
*Video Clips

Stevie Wonder
24. Blowin' In The Wind (for Bob Dylan).
25. (Uptight) Everything's Alright/I Was Made To Love Her/For Once In My Life
26. Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours
27. Boogie On A Reggae Woman

The sound was horrible for Stevie Wonder. His voice was never stong in the mix. Had other friends text me during his set saying how band the sound was. Not sure why they couldn't get it right. There was even a slight delay before he started because of sound problems.
I did enjoy his set. Again the first time I've seen him. He is a true legend.

Smokey Robinson
28. Tracks of My Tears

John Legend
29. Mercy Mercy Me
30. The Way You Make Me Feel

BB King joins John Legend
31. The Thrill Is Gone

Stevie Wonder
32. Livin' For The City

Sting joins Stevie
33. Higher Ground/Roxanne/Higher Ground
I enjoyed this and the crowd was very much into Sting.

Jeff Beck joins Stevie (Sting leaves)
34. Superstitious

A legendary night at Madison Square Garden. I don't know if Friday's show with U2 will be able to top this. Again a unique night for the Bruce fans to see he and the E Street Band play with so many different artists.

Some other notes: A lot of people were leaving during Bruce's set just because it was so late. It was very easy to move down from the bad seats into very good seats by the side of the stage for most of Bruce's set. There were a lot of great seats open after people let.

The video clips were a nice touch. The show was pretty well paced for the most part. Some slow times but overall it was an enjoyable six hours.
Nothing worse than sitting in traffic trying to get to, and then in, the Lincoln Tunnel at 2 a.m. But someone a great night of Bruce and a great night of music made in tolerable.
Thank you for reading"

Bruce's set sounds like a rock n roll history lesson in microcosm with the E Street Band as the house band.

Be interesting to see if U2 attempt something similar. Not convinced they'd have the diversity to pull it off, but it should be fun nonetheless.

And while its great that Mick will be appearing, like so many others of these type of megastar events, its a pity that the Stones appear to have passed up another opportunity to do something in a similar vein.

Imagine the Stones playing their own songs and also acting as a house band backing some of the finest rock n roll, blues and soul musicians who have influenced and inspired them down the years. There's not too many other bands I can think of who have inspired and influenced (as well as been influenced by) such a diverse collection of acts and who would have fitted the bill so perfectly for this event.

If only.

I agree, Gazza. But to be fair, both U2 and Bruce were currently on tour when this HOF show came around.

They were already "in the zone" for performing live.

Getting our guys together for this one off date might have resulted in humiliation.

Fair enough point, although both of those acts arent averse to performing at non-tour events from time to time.

The Stones havent done THAT since their appearance at Keith's CNIB concerts in April 1979.

With the Stones it seemingly has to be a mega tour or total inactivity. Nothing in between.

It sort of makes a mockery of Keith's much quoted remark about the greatest tribute a musician can have on his tombstone is 'He Passed It On'. Bit hard to do that when you basically dont exist as a band outside of the comfort zone of your own tour 'bubble'.

As fantastic as these shows sound, the ticket prices turn my stomach.  When did Rock & Roll become the exclusive property of the wealthy?

And what the hell was Tom Morello doing there? Raging against the machine? His guitar said "Arm the Homeless" and he's pointing it at people who can afford to pay $2500 to hear some rock & roll songs? And singing a Joe Strummer song to boot?

There are some mixed messages there, methinks.

Think I alluded to similar feelings when the shows were announced (on the Springsteen thread, I think). The irony is obviously lost on that prick Jann Wenner.

I was told that Bono, MJ and Bruce were singing a song in soundcheck and Bono said "lets do it one more time. I don't mean to be bossing around the Boss" ;D

Guess that Wild Billy would take lots of practice....

Although most concert photos we see today are great, they lack the warmth of deep reds and blues as well as darkness from concerts of yesteryears. I guess similar to listening to either analog or digital recordings. Concerts are just too well lit with white light.

Thanks to all for the updates, which we wouldn't be getting from concerts of yesteryears.

Wonderful pics. Cant wait to see and hear these shows. Great to see Mick on a stage again (is this the first time he's performed anywhere since the last 02 Stones show?)

Surprised no one commented on the choice of U2 song that he sang on - Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of.  Mick (and his daughter Lizzie) sang on an early version of it, which eventually wasn't used.

NEW YORK – U2 brought three generations of chart-toppers — Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and the Black Eyed Peas — with them onstage Friday at another night of mix and match magic at Madison Square Garden.

Metallica brought the thunder to Lou Reed and Ray Davies. It was the second of two concerts to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they will be edited into an HBO special to be seen on Thanksgiving weekend.

During U2's set, Bono was waxing poetic about the spiritual, physical and political power of rock 'n' roll until finally the Boss had had enough.

"Let's have some fun with it," Springsteen said. They performed U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," with Bono and Springsteen trading call-and-response vocals during the final verse.

U2 topped the bill for the four hours of music. True to the spirit of Rock Hall events, producers sought some unusual pairings for artists to pay tribute to influences: Annie Lennox and Lenny Kravitz joined Aretha Franklin onstage, and Sting popped up to sing "People Get Ready" with Jeff Beck.

Jagger, who sang "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" with U2, also danced a duet with the Black Eyed Peas' Fergie on "Gimme Shelter." Jagger stuck his microphone in his waistband as the black mini-skirted Fergie approached. U2 stood in the background, the world's most expensive "house band," as Jagger called them.

"Weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs...," Bono joked.

U2 asserted authority when everyone left the stage, closing the show alone with "Beautiful Day."

Just to show music's finest aren't perfect: U2, Springsteen and Patti Smith needed a do-over when they mangled their version of "Because the Night." They almost needed a third, when Smith missed the cue to start.

Mettalica went for an easy cheer from the New York crowd by playing video of the Yankees' Mariano Rivera behind them during "Enter Sandman." The song is played at Yankee Stadium when Rivera enters a game.

Mettalica paid tribute to influences by playing songs by Bob Seger and Queen. Frontman James Hetfield noted the band's trepidation when Rock Hall officials suggested artists to share the stage with.

"We're not the most jammy kind of band," he said. "We're kind of a tight little unit. We don't let a lot of people in."

One choice was unsurprising: Ozzy Osbourne, who sang "Paranoid" and "Iron Man." The others were less obvious but went over hugely well, judging by the crowd. New York's Reed had a muscular backing for "Sweet Jane" and Davies had the type of riffage he hadn't seen since the Kinks on "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night."

"We didn't know what to think of this at first," Hetfield said about meeting Davies. "We got completely schooled."

Jerry Lee Lewis began the show with his hit "Great Balls of Fire." A half-century ago he might have ended it with some leaps or kicking of furniture; here he slowly pushed his piano stool over at the song's end.

Aretha Franklin was a teaser, introducing one song as being "for those of you who don't feel they're getting enough respect" — then sang a show from "Ragtime." She introduced her band and drew a blank on the name of her guitar player. She barely acknowledged Lennox when they shared the stage for "Chain of Fools..

She still has a gale's force voice, though.

And, in the end, audience members got their "Respect."

Sorry I didn’t report in until now. I’m still on complete sensory overload from last night. Aretha with Lenny Kravitz, Metallica with Lou Reed, Ray Davies and Ozzy….whew!

Jeff Beak absolutely stole the show. He was fantastic. When he began the intro to “People Get Ready” I was hoping to see Rod Stewart come out, but it was Sting…who I almost didn’t recognize. Buddy Guy was killer and so was Billy Gibbons, but the stunning highlight was Jeff doing “Day In The Life”. One guy with a guitar mesmerizing the entire arena. Beautiful.

Oh, and Bono is possibly NOT a twat. He was like a gracious host last night during the U2 set enthusiastically sharing the stage with the Black Eyed Peas and that other guy.  ;)

When Edge and Fergie began the intro to “Gimme Shelter”, my heart stopped. Seeing Mick take the stage was so, so, so wonderful. He looked and sounded great. The duet with Bono on one of the U2 songs I happen to really like (Stuck In A Moment) was a pleasant surprise.  He’s Mick Freaking Jagger and his part of the show was over sooooo fast.

We really need a tour.

Nice vids.
Thanks, Bitch!

Hope that's the first version of 'Because The Night'.
Patti jumps in waaay too soon.

Mick looked and sounded road ready.
Would've liked to see him do another Stones song - or two.

Ozzy, Lou Reed and Ray Davies each got to do two of their songs with Metallica.

I have mixed emotions.

GREAT to see Mick looking so good and sounding so strong; but Gimme Shelter is my FAVORITE Stones Song and I am SO LONGING to see MY Band that this performance........I dunno. I don't like the strings or whatever I'm hearing. I must say that Bono did appear to be humbled (is that possible?) and The Edge's guitar did us proud.  I like Fergie and think she rocked!

The Garden appeared to erupt when Mick took that stage!!!!!!!!! He IS THE MASTER!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it's been 2 years since we've seen him perform. I've missed him.

Agree with all who have said that the "boys" have all appeared recently and look healthy. So let's get on with it. We need a Tour and we need it SOON!!!!

Very happy for Bitch and SV. Thanks to SV for taking the time to text me. It meant alot my friend. ;)

I can see where you're coming from. Its my favourite Stones song too. I thought U2 did an OK job of it (theres a clip of them playing it at a soundcheck before one of the their recent shows on YouTube, obviously with last nights gig in mind, and its pretty decent)- but hey, someone has to keep these great songs alive. The Stones have hardly played it much for years. Its up to THEM to make the most of the time they have left to entertain us. U2 just have a very different sound. Christ, I've even seen Meatloaf perform Gimme Shelter live several years ago. Now THAT was frightening!

Mick looked and (based on those clips) sounded really good, especially considering he was playing with performers he's never played with before and the fact that it was his first live performance in two years. Charlie's sounded as good as he usually is when he's played recently. Ronnie played last week and its hard to tell what he played like as I've only seen a so-so quality You Tube clip of what was a brief performance so its a bit premature to assume he's in roadworthy condition. Keith ? Well, those photos of him at the Scream Awards showed a man looking healthier than he has done for many years - but we havent heard him play and he hasnt exactly been busy.

They're far from ready to go on the road, but hopefully the fact that three of them have been performing in the last two weeks will whet their appetites a bit more.

Jagger performing is spine jarring at anytime, with anyone.  Just goes to show the impact he has on a crowd.  By all accounts, the engine room is in it's first stages of reawakening.
The garden has been planted, the germination process is commencing...

While we're on the subject and not that I'm a conspiracy theorist or paranoid or anything, does anyone find it a bit strange that Mick appears to have done NOTHING at all since August 2007 apart from attend a few movie premieres?

I know in recent years, when theres a long period off between tours, Charlie tends to either play a bit of jazz/boogie woogie and otherwise do very little, Ronnie tends to guest with whoever wants to hang out with him and make a solo record and Keith has tended to do next to nothing (whereas in the past he tried to stay reasonably active).

Mick, however, has always appeared to be more creatively driven. Usually at some points between Stones activity, he can be counted on to make a solo record and do some film production (the latter has been a major interest in the last decade or so). However, in the last two years hes done nothing at all, which is VERY unlike him. Not a solo project, not a single guest appearance at a concert until last night, no movie work. Nothing.

Very unlike him. Makes me wonder if there's been significant things going on in his personal life in the last two years that havent been publicised.

Anyway, the main thing is that he's back performing again, which is always good news.

Rock’s Royal Genes, in Endless Recombinations

By Jon Pareles
Published: October 30, 2009

Performers at Thursday's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame benefit concert included John Fogerty, left, who joined Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band onstage to play tunes by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Roy Orbison

History lesson, star showcase, oldies singalong, canonization and romp — on Thursday night, the first of two Madison Square Garden celebrations and benefits for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was all of those.

The headliners were Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Crosby, Stills and Nash, and a dozen of their fellow members of the hall, along with some aspirants, joined them onstage to share songs, trace connections, offer praise and spark one another. The nearly six-hour concert was to be edited into an HBO program to be shown on Nov. 29.

Yet even with cameras rolling, most of the performers stayed loose, whooping it up as they played unexpected songs in combinations that might never happen again.

The two concerts — a Friday show featured U2, Aretha Franklin and Metallica — were billed as the hall’s 25th anniversary, although the foundation behind the hall was incorporated in 1983, and its first musicians weren’t inducted until 1986. (One of them, Jerry Lee Lewis, led off Thursday’s show with a two-fisted “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On.”) The museum in Cleveland opened in 1995. The “25th anniversary” tag anticipates the 25th induction ceremony in March. If the hall were a musician, it could now be inducted into itself, since to ensure historical perspective, its founding rule is that nominees must have started their recording careers a quarter-century earlier. Decades can take a toll on voices and lives, but Thursday’s performers were still vital.

To sort out rock’s past — a fertile tangle of cultures, races, classes, artistic ambitions and business imperatives — the hall traces lineages and influences. It’s a workable approach, and as pedagogy it can help lead curious fans back through generations. Yet the correlations — Hall of Famer equals Ancestors A plus B plus C — never tell the whole story. Great musicians listen widely, but then they twist, misconstrue, recombine ideas and mirror their own instincts in what they learn from their chosen mentors.

Mr. Springsteen, a Hall of Fame mainstay who happily credits his sources, was presented as a successor to the agitprop of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, as well as a disciple of Roy Orbison, Phil Spector, Elvis Presley and the soul of Sam and Dave.

That’s a passable summation, but still incomplete, leaving out the facet of Mr. Springsteen that comes up with New Jersey romantic epics like “Jungleland” and “Badlands,” two centerpieces of his set.

Mr. Springsteen showed his agitprop side by having Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine — playing a guitar with “Arm the Homeless” written on it — join him for “The Ghost of Tom Joad” and the Clash’s “London Calling.” And when Mr. Springsteen shared the E Street Band with John Fogerty, their first song together was “Fortunate Son,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s blast at the uneven burdens of war. But Mr. Fogerty and Mr. Springsteen also sang a duet on Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.”

For his Spector side, Mr. Springsteen brought on Darlene Love, a Spector frontwoman who’s nominated for the hall this year — he lobbied fervently — and can still belt “Da Doo Ron Ron.” Sam Moore, of Sam and Dave, unleashed his high tenor for “Hold On, I’m Comin’ ” and “Soul Man.” After Mr. Springsteen declared that continental drift had pried apart Long Island and New Jersey, Billy Joel arrived, trading verses with Mr. Springsteen on Mr. Joel’s songs and doing a dead-on Springsteen impression during “Born to Run.”

In an irrepressible set, Mr. Wonder played the night’s Dylan song — “Blowin’ in the Wind” — and a Michael Jackson tribute, “The Way You Make Me Feel,” pushing it back toward a 1960s Motown beat. In the concert’s blues moment, B. B. King performed “The Thrill Is Gone” with wiry elegance; Smokey Robinson sang his own “Tracks of My Tears,” amplifying its heartbreak.

Pecking sly syncopations from his Clavinet and puffing zigzag harmonica solos in his own songs, Mr. Wonder also brought on admirers: John Legend, who overreached in his attempt at Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy Me (the Ecology)”; Sting, digging into the bass line of “Higher Ground” before stepping forward for his own “Roxanne”; and Jeff Beck, who made his guitar snarl, cackle and wail during “Superstition.”

Mr. Simon’s set included the latest Simon & Garfunkel reunion, with “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” transposed down to help Mr. Garfunkel’s weathered voice reach the high notes, and “The Sounds of Silence,” segueing from its pristine acoustic-guitar version to the folk-rock hit.

Mr. Simon’s guests were doo-woppers: Little Anthony and the Imperials, harmonizing a cappella in “Two People in the World,” and Dion DiMucci of Dion and the Belmonts, his voice still swaggering in “The Wanderer.”

Mr. Simon sang a wistful version of George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun” with David Crosby and Graham Nash. But none of those guests accounted for the African and Caribbean rhythms and jump-cutting imagery of songs from Mr. Simon’s solo years, like “You Can Call Me Al,” with Mr. Simon confidently cuing a full-arena singalong.

Crosby, Stills and Nash don’t harmonize as neatly as they did in the 1960s and ’70s, so Stephen Stills compensated with aggressive, bluesy guitar solos. The trio countrified its old songs and brought friends — Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt — in a lineup recalling another rock anniversary: the 1979 No Nukes concert. (Mr. Springsteen performed at it, too.) On Thursday Ms. Raitt sang “Love Has No Pride” with glowing tenderness, then applied her slide guitar to the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider.”

The concert strove to touch, if only briefly, every rock influence from boogie-woogie to pop to power chords, winding up with Mr. Springsteen’s troupe performing the gospel-rooted “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.” Luckily, the night didn’t belong to schools or categories, but to endless hybrids and raucous, upraised voices.

Well if their is something going on in his personal life. Then he has done a great job of keeping it quiet. Their has'nt been a whiff of a rumour that I've heard of and with the British tabs it would'nt take much for them to get rolling on a rumour. Maybe it's just that their is no commercial interest in any Jagger projects that don't include the Rolling Stones. Maybe they're all just getting bored with being at home and are ready to get it going again. The (steel) wheels of the Rolling Stones machine are very slowly starting to turn again.

About the concert last night! OK here's my review and comments. As most of you know, I am a concert junkie so this show was like a smorgasboard of music and yes, it was orgasmic. I'm writing this with my wet fingers, hahaha,,,hey now, if Joey can type with his penis... ok all joking aside...Even though it was a R&R Hall of fame show, I have no idea who was inducted this year, nobody mentioned them, In the beginning of the show Tom Hanks gave a little speech but it was really loud inside MSG. The crowd was PUMPED UP! Yeah JERRY LEE LEWIS was slightly boring (dude is ancient) ARETHA's voice was loud and proud (and fat) and LENNY KRAVITZ (studly) and ANNIE LENNOX (is she a dyke?) didnt fit in too good with Aretha but OK, they tried to mix it up. BUDDY GUY's still going strong. JEFF BECK was mesmerizing, he put me in such a trance I didnt take any videos of him, I was just glued to my seat in amazement. He was in TOP FORM and he was playing his heart out. Impressive and he looked better than ever, his body rocks as much as his guitar playing. STING was a surprise, his voice was perfect, he carries a mean tune, great timing and perfect pitch full of emotion. Loved Sting! METALLICA kicks serious rock and roll ass ~ they are tight as a drum, really in sync with each other and the tunes were powerplayed and loud as hell. RAY DAVIES and LOU REED kept up with and stood out from Metallica's style making it their own. LOVED RAY & LOU! Dudes are relevant! OZZY OSBORNE (crazy ass mf) got the crowd going, he's so wild it's contageous! Loved OZZY's energy! BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN was another surprise, I didnt think he was playing both nights but he seriously loves to Rock and Roll and loving what he does shows, he is well loved by the NY crowd (homeboy). PATTY SMITH is one of my faves, she used to play the local NY club scene for years and had a cult following, but honestly, her timing sucked. Even the second try she blew it. Maybe she was nervous, but not at the professional level of mostly everyone else there. I still love her tho.  Of course I love U2 alot, always excited to hear them and see what they've got to show and prove to the world. Yeah they enjoy showing off and know they are hot pieces of ass but even BONO didnt try to outstage MICK, perhaps he knows he cant do it, so he showed respect for MICK. Righteous. When BLACK EYE PEAS came out with MICK onstage, that was a triple whammy. FERGIE looked hot in those fabulous boots and leather mini, and I think MICK & BONO were competing to get her attention! She was cool, did her stage thing, I think she sang 'it's just a shout away' instead of 'a shot away' and Lisa Fischer's vocals kicks Fergies to the curb but she put out a solid performance, and she played with the big boys without batting an eyelash, she has what it takes. Go FERGIE! When MICK came on stage, my heart was pounding, I was so excited! I LOVE MICK MORE THAN EVER! I wanted him to out-sing and out-perform everyone else, and MICK never disappoints, he sure was a crowd pleaser. Everyone was cheering, most people were in shock to see him! I liked Stuck in a Moment, it's a cool song, they did it well. It was a fantastic orgasmic night of music, so cool to see so many of my favorite musicians on the same night. I hope they continue this tradition of opening the R&R HOF to the public. Other years it was always at the Waldorf Astoria and $15,000 or invitation only. This was a much better idea. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL! And THANKS TO GAZZA for the scoop about MICK's special appearance ~ GAZZA and ROCKS OFF RULES! FVCK YOU GAZZA AND EVERYONE ELSE! SV and I took a pic giving you all the finger so I'm not sure if she wants to post it, but we mean it, in a good way, of course!

Incredible Night of music. Had an "limited view" seat that was more like no view at all! To add insult to injury the section also had no sound! Recorded Tom Hanks and Jerry Lee Lewis from there and relized it wasn't going to be very good. Quickly relocated myself to one of the expensive seats and luckily it's rightful owner never showed up.

As such the sound on the first two track isn't the best, but included for the sake of completeness. Other issues include a talkative crowd during CSN (guess they weren't fans); also had an equipment issue near the end of Simon & Garfunkel's set. Didn't miss any music but the recoding levels did peak a bit on "Cecelia" Did my best to even things out in
Audacity, but it's still a little uneven.

Other than those issues this is a excellent recording of a great night!

Enjoy!

Note: The dotted lines represent fade outs, which were made with Audacity at the set changes. I have no suggestions for disc splits.

Of course. LOL

Re: the highlighted bit, no one was mentioned because it was a show to mark the 25th anniversary of the RnRHoF not the annual induction ceremony, which took place in April at the Waldorf, as usual.

Thanks for all your reviews and video clips. Delighted you and SV had such a great time.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, Mick (and his daughter Lizzie) sang on an early version of it, which ended up not being used. As far as I remember, they're both thanked in the credits on the album.

Actually the security was not the normal 'cops-in-uniform' but there were many undercover plain-clothes cops instead. Maybe they didnt want to make it obvious for the TV/HBO footage.  I know they were undercover because when people lit-up, they were running down the aisles to stomp out crime. People got tossed out for it. Crime doesnt pay in the Garden!

It's great to see the main man back to doing what he does better than anyone else in the world and I hate to be negative but that version of Gimme Shelter was quite awful. I know the sound is shite on that clip and maybe if it's better, it will sound better, but it sounds terrible. Fergie really should stick to rubbish pop. I know U2 are massive and all that, but I've never like them. Don't know what it is. I know Bono is supposed to have this amazing voice and they are supposed to be a really tight band, but I don't really like the songs apart from a few exceptions and I don't like Bono's voice. Stuck in a Moment is one of the ones I hate. Mick has the ability to make the absolute shitest song sound good and I would listen to him singing just about anything, but I just can't get into this duet. The riff is going for a sort of Curtis Mayfield vibe but falls horribly short.

Wow, pretty exciting stuff, great to see the old geezer strutting around like it's 1973, seems like he'll be doing that forever...

Like others have said, this version of GS is really bad, actually it must be the worst one I've ever heard, what's with that stupid blues guitar pattern, is that Bono playing ?! Keith must have been apoplectic. The Edge plays like he's never heard the song either, how pathetic. We complain when the Stones play the records verbatim these days, but it's better than this.

There's a way around that. He could get his finger out of his ass and get on a stage with the rest of the band again.

No one else to blame but themselves here. If Mick's cameo went down a storm, think what a Stones appearance would have been like.

Unfortunately instead of living up to this 'greatest rock n roll band in the world' tag, they seem content to effectively cease to exist as a band for years on end unless there's a mega tour involved.

800 days without any Stones activity now. (Attending movie premieres don't count!)

Good point, even if it wasn't the full Stones they could have done it like for the NYC 2001 concert.

I guess they're playing it "rare" to cash in when they do the big tours...

I didn't take a close look at the line-up but oftentimes, the bands that participate in that kind of concert are bands currently on tour, U2 for instance.

Good show.
Jagger was the show stealer.
Enough of Bono already, but the Edge impresses
Bruce was very in the moment.
Very good solos by Miami Steve
Could they have miked Clarence's sax solo during Jungleland?
IMHO missing that sound ruined the song.
Jeff Beck was magical in each segment.
Sam Moore was on.
Bonnie Raitt only gets better.
One CSN song was enough.
Garfunkel looked great, Simon looked aged, they both sang terrific.
Simon needs to get back out there.
Do you think Buddy Guy's guitar was loud enough?

All in all a good show.

A fun show to watch and it was very well produced and sound on my system was top notch..A few comments:

*Jeff Beck on the Beatles medly showed his genius and overall gets my MVP (his lil gal bass player is amazing too)
*Springsteen closed the broadcast and was his usual perfect stage prescence and band hit on all cylinders
*BB King and Stevie Wonder age so gracefully and were simply great
*CSN and Simon Garfunkle segments could have been shorter
*Metallica played their asses off but Ozzy was a joke and Lou Reed seemed lost
*Aretha belted out some great tunes and her voice was on....but Annie Lennox was a waste of a plane ticket
*U2 seemed to get a less than star status crowd roar although they played well enough
*Mick was one the the hilites of course and Fergie hung in there very well..Did anyone notice the Stones guitar teck between the Edges amps playing just off stage during Gimme Shelter? The guy wearing glasses that tours with them and looks a tad like Clapton??

Anyway it was a great 4 hours and I enjoyed it and hope everyone else gets a chance to see it on a DVD if they don't have HBO.....

Clapton, Beck Plan Canada, U.S. Shows
Posted on Monday November 30, 2009 at 10:01 AM

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck have slotted two shows for Canada and one for the U.S in 2010. Is this all there is or could there be a tour in the works?

Right now it looks as if the dates – Feb. 18 in New York City at Madison Square Garden; Feb. 21 in Toronto at Air Canada Center and Feb. 22 in Montreal at Bell Centre – are the only Clapton / Beck co-headline dates on the books for North America. The guitar-slinging duo also plays London’s O2 Feb. 13-14.

Although Clapton and Beck have appeared together on various festival billings, their shows at Tokyo’s Saitama Super Arena earlier this year marked the first time the two legendary guitarists ever shared a headlining slot.

“Eric and I played together in Japan earlier this year and had a blast,” Beck said. “Since then we have been in regular contact and talked about doing a similar show for our fans. Looking forward to the shows in 2010.”

So far, only Toronto has announced its onsale with tickets going up Dec. 4 at 10 a.m. local time. For more information, please click here for Eric Clapton’s Web site and here for Jeff Beck’s home on the ‘Net.

*Jeff Beck on the Beatles medly showed his genius and overall gets my MVP (his lil gal bass player is amazing too)

She was great.

It was interesting how they re-ordered the appearances for the HBO show. The events were two different nights, with egos balanced as to who the "headliner" was the fist night (Bruce) and the second night (U2). I loved that Jeff Beck ended up in a higher spot than U2 in the TV show. As I said in my review of that night, he absolutely stole the show on night 2.

I see this as a not so disturbing trend. Old guys playing with each other. Ok,I really would love to dig some hot new band that has a member under 30,40,50 et all. But if some really talented old dudes get together and decide to jam. Is that really a bad thing? Saw Clapton/Winwood last year. Sounded pretty good to me. Sounds like Eric is feeling nosatalgic these days as well. I certainly hope this turns into a series of shows like the Clapton/ Winwood tour. I'd love to see it that's for sure.

The HBO special was really great! They did a nice job editing it but they cut out Lenny Kravitz altogether which was a shame. I guess it was too much time spent on Aretha's set. Did anyone like Annie Lennox's performance? She is kinda strange, is she really HIV Positive or was that on her shirt for shock purposes?

I agree that's a shame, Bitch. I loved Lenny that night (he and Aretha did "Think"). Lenny and Aretha were much better than Annie and Aretha. It doesn't seem to show on the special, but in the arena that night we got a vibe that she and Aretha didn't like each other, or maybe hadn't gotten along during rehearsals or something. Meanwhile Lenny was hot, hot, hot with Aretha....and they had a great vibe.

Would have loved to seen Mary J brought in for this song, I think she would have brought it.   The more I hear Fergie, the worse she sounds.
