Title: Old Crow Medicine Show Appreation thread (nsc)
Post by Starbuck on Aug 3rd, 2009 at 1:47pm
I have been spinning the old crow boys as of late. not a huge fan of the upbeat fast numbers...but their slower ballads amaze:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug7IgB8MfWE

word.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyUOe7HAkpk&feature=channel

a few questions:

1. what is the deal with critter fuqua? is he in the band or not? did he quit?

2. does secor get all the chicks on tour?

3. who named these guys? critter? ketch? FFS!

4. anyone have a review of tennesee pusher? i don't have this album yet.

5. anyone seen them live? i don't believe they ever come to the midwest, so i haven't had the chance to see them yet.

I love this band. I will be seeing them at The Beacon on Thursday.

Sadly, this thread will still be in single digit responses by then.

single digit responses? come on...we know meg will reply...and the two of us can keep up the shit talking for at least seven or 8 more posts.

you're seeing them at the beacon? review afterwards please...and make sure you include a critique of ketch's and willie's stage banter.

Bucky..how did you know I would take part in this thread? ;) ;D ;D

Haven't seen them live, even though they did play or are going to play here in Cowtown.   I much prefer their style to that of the Felice Brothers or the Avett Brothers.  Check those 2 groups out if you haven't already.  Always willing to give helpful pointers to the music lovers on RO...

Of course, Sway can give us his review.  That can keep the thread going a little bit longer.

Waiting to get a sample of the new Buckaroo and Feej work of art, by the way!!!

i saw them on austin city limits...the only songs i caught were minglewood, we're all in this together and wagon wheel...great show though!

the feej/buck alt country album took a kick in the teeth today when mrs buck quashed any hopes of me buying a dobro....i might have to settle for a kazoo instead....

the mrs and i will be taking the oldest to the first show...he is five and walks around the house singing "i hear them all" quite regularly. however, we're debating the merits of taking number two...he's only three...not sure if he would last for two hours or more. any ideer howe long they usually play?

what album did the tracks at the end of the "eutaw" disc come from? alternate wagon wheel through odds and ends? i lost the liner notes....

oh yeah...and if you have the album notes, would you be able to tell me who plays mandolin on the album? goodbye booze and other tunes? i didn't think they had any mandolin in their songs...a glaring (and perhaps the only) omission...

Oh put me on the spot will ya....

My iTunes has been "restored" probably 2 times since I sent you that! I had 2 EP's: One was "Down Home Girl"-3 songs and the other was "World Cafe Live", which must be at the end of EUTAW, as those are the right songs.

Album notes?  What are those?

A guess on the mandolin player, with the help of wikimyfriend is Matt Kinman, a former member! ;)

Hey and I expect a big report, I'd ask for a phone call during "Tell it to Me" but that might be too much to ask!

Enjoy!!! :willya

fabulous show at the fitzgerald theater tonight. i haven't seen PHC live in about 15 years, and holy crap...that house band is something else. four guys...the guitar player and piano player are fucking amazing. and the piano player looks like the band teacher from the simpsons...completely bald on the top with hair sticking out about three feet from the sides. the voice talents are amazing too.

as far as the boys, we only got four songs, which was a major disappointment. i was hoping for six...whaddya gonna do? their first song i'd never heard before and am still trying to find out what it was...they continued with next go round...then wagon wheel just before intermission...then mary's kitchen just before the show ended. keillor was harassing them most of the show about busking in front of doc watson's drug store...got a little old.

meg, were you listening? did you catch the house band doing "sampson and delilah"...rev gary davis was mentioned as well....my face lit up when i heard them do that. i know you've been spinning that kotke disc, but i hope you've had a chance to delve into the good reverend as well.

Did your children behave?
Who knows maybe you got to hear a brand new song from the Boys tonight?!!

I've been spinning all of those discs, Bucky!-docs, revs, and daddies ;)

nah, i didn't take the kids. mrs bucky and i went with a college friend who i don't see often enough. i'm taking the oldest (who turns six today....) to the show at the state theater on nov 7, after which i might start up an OCMS tribute band.

ironically enough, mrs buck is concerned for willie's health. "he is just the skinniest damn beanpole i've ever seen," she says. i explained to her that such rock stars are supposed to develop cocaine habits, which take away all the baby fat.

my god meg. what a night. i have been letting it settle for a few days and am ready to proceed with a review.

first off, my wife and i ended up taking both brady (6 yrs) and connor (3 yrs). mrs buck has been concerned as of late about connor, and rightly so, getting left out of all the fun stuff that brady gets to do. so we took a chance and brought him along. thankfully, things went well, despite the fact that the next youngest person besides brady in the entire theater was about 24. the boys, who normally feed off each other and tear down the walls at home, were very well behaved in public. we also got plenty of looks and smiles the whole evening by people sitting around us and out at the bar/lobby during intermission. people didn't expect to see kids there. but the kids probably had more fun than anybody else....brady knew probably 60% or more of the songs, as i have been playing OCMS in the car and around the house every day for about a month or more to prepare the lil' whippersnappers.

there was no opening act, of course, and i was surprised to see a sixth man out on stage, who switched back and forth between drums, keys and mandolin, as well as adding some vox as backup on gill's mike on a few songs. overall, the sound could have been a little better, especially ketch's harmonica, which was always drowned out by the rest of the instruments and didn't have the bite it usually has on the records. that being said, the show was fantastic. we got pretty much every song we were hoping to get except james river blues. off the top of my head, here's what i remember:

fall on my knees
raise a ruckus
corrina corrina
tell it to me
big time in the jungle
tear it down
hard to love
cc rider
hard to tell
we're all in this together
wagon wheel
down home girl
minglewood blues
union maid
i hear them all
alabama high test
highway halo
methamphetamine
next go round
humdinger
mary's kitchen
crazy eyes
tennessee pusher
caroline

the boys were especially taken with i hear them all, caroline, wagon wheel and tell it to me...each their favorite OCMS songs. they love james river blues too, and were sad when they didn't play it. i told them that critter is gone so they probably wouldn't play it, as it is his song...but they were still sad anyway. my wife was pumped at big time in the jungle, which is probably her favorite OCMS tune...i wasn't expecting to hear it either, so it was a highlight. for me the biggest highlight was corrina corrina, as i wasn't expecting any dylan tunes...although dylan didn't write it i know....they did it as a nod to bob, seeing as they were playing in his home state.

the audience was good. the place wasn't packed by any means, but the crowd was very appreciative and lively. they closed with wagon wheel and tell it to me right before the encore, and immediately people jumped to their feet and started screaming. wagon wheel is OCMS's satisfaction/brown sugar, we all know...they must be getting sick of playing that song...but damn, it is a good one, and all the people love it.

i was surprised to see kevin put down the guitjo on about four or five songs and pick up the electric...tennesee pusher, methamphetamine and a few others from the new album...as well as we're all in this together during the encore, during which morgan put down the upright and played an electric bass. makes sense i suppose...OCMS is heading more commercial and less old timey, so i wasn't surprised to see the guitar drenched with effects for the drug songs off TP.

all in all, fantabulous show. i knew all the songs and was singing the whole time. more importantly, the kids loved it and had a blast. brady was pumped for raise a ruckus as well as his favorites....i put him on my back and brought him down to the stage to dance for the encore (we're all in this together and union maid)....some guy down there patted him on the back and said, "damn...that is one lucky boy..." dancing with him on my back right next to the stage was priceless.

when we got home, connor kept talking about how silly willie was. admittedly, he's right...willie is clearly a spaz child and forgot his ritalin...(not a bad thing, of course...the dude has endless energy onstage and was running all over the place and rocking out with ketch all night). connor kept saying to my mom, who watched the baby while we saw the show..."gramma...ketch pushed willie over...and willie was rolling around on the floor. he is so silly!"

Thanks for the great review Bucky!

And I'm glad the boys enjoyed the concert.  It could have been chaos for you-instead I think you are stuck taking your kids to every concert you go to!
I guess since their Daddy sings and acts the fool as John Lennon, they must be pretty used to the concert life.....
