Title: How religious are the Stones?
Post by Holden on Jun 30th, 2009 at 4:14pm
I've been wondering. I've never read any interviews of them where they discuss their personal religious beliefs. Their actions would say they aren't, as well as some lyrics like "old time religion / is just a superstition" and "no religion is tougher than the state of mind / I don't need it."

But at the same time they have Gospel songs like shine a light...anyone know for certain?

Mick might qualify as "spiritual," in the vaguest sense. Like David St. Hubbins of Spinal Tap, with his "bits of Eastern philosophy."

Practicing or not, if you become a Catholic, you remain a Catholic. I'm one and I haven't set foot in a church this millennium.

Back to the subject matter: I suspect there is a good chance the others are all Anglican.

did Mick actually become  a catholic when he married Bianca?- i understood he just had to attend a few talks with a priest  in order to get some understanding of the religion

I expect you  are probably right HTM as far as the religion they inherited from their parents goes - EXCEPT isn't charlie jewish??

while it is not exactly a religion per se keith's whole existence has all the hallmarks of that of a Zen master

i don't think Pattie was a born again - her parents (and she as well) are old school Lutheran as far as i recall

and you don't have to be particularly religious to appreciate gospel music imho

No he didn't. He received two weeks religious instruction to prepare for his wedding to 'understand the faith' but remained a (non-practicing) Anglican. That was according to Abbé Beaud, the priest who performed the service.

SIA - Charlie is half-Jewish on (I think) his mother's side.

Yep - and Keith's late father in law was a Lutheran pastor. I think Patti's brother may also be a preacher. There was actually a tabloid headline in the Sun about 25 years ago that claimed that 'Keith has found God' which started from a quote from someone in Patti's family being taken somewhat out of context.  Keith issued a prompt denial saying 'I wasnt even looking for Him'.

Keith actually played on several songs on a CD released by Marsha Hansen & Friends (Patti's sister?) three years ago called "My Soul Is A Witness". It came with a book too.

Well, of course.

Actually, I believe there is no such thing as being half or quarter Jewish, either.

As I understand it, you are Jewish, or not at all.

Mick is a big fan of Jesus Christ. It's the only reason he visits this board.

I'm quite sure Mick and Keith are atteist. Keith has a gypsy's soul and Mick's paretnts learn him to think by himself, so he dosn't need a preacher.

I'm not so sure abourt Ronnie...

Well when MICK was staying in NYC, there was a Catholic Church nearby and every morning they would ring the chruch bells loud and long. So MICK went over to the church and and requested that they do not ring the bells in the morning. The Church said it was their custom to ring the bells out to play music  to God. MICK suggested they play the organ instead of ringing the bells. Of course the Church was happy to comply because MICK gave them $10,000 US$ to buy a new organ or (repair the one they had), and so a new tradition began and they played organ music instead of ringing the bells. They asked if MICK was Catholic and he said NO. I know this for a fact is a true story.

that's funny....
mick likes to think of himself as a cynic.....but he used to use alot of biblical references...which has been replaced more recently with the more eastern stuff.....and although he sounds like a skeptic to me, he seems to fascinated by religion.
and he only had to take a few instructions to marry bianca...
but remember those huge, gothic crosses around his neck on the 72 tour?
