Title: Stones remastered - The verdict?

Any one got the "new' remastered cd's? I cant find them anywhere. I was hoping someone here bought one and could give a comparison.

I bought Sticky Fingers re-master - it does sound cleaner, and more punchy. IMO Wild Horses is particularly cleaned up. Dead Flowers sounds quite a bit better too. I was tempted to buy the remastered Tattoo You (it being one of my fave Stones albums) but not sure the improvement in sound is really worth it. If they'd added something new in the packaging this would have helped, but its more or less the same old sleeve.

being my fav stones' album, SF would probably be the only one I'd consider buying - unless the exile release in october (?) contains additional/bonus material. not holding my breathe, though. if it did, why wouldn't these other albums contain enticing material, too..? my local record shop does have them, but I don't recall which ones and what they're going for...

thanks for the review, speedfreakjive.

... it would be financially better off to buy the one or two releases (that I'd consider), rather than spending time trying to pick out one or two worthy reviews of the 422 posts, there. and from a quick run though the 1st page, the common theme is the opinion of "not again"...

it's the best all around music forum onilne, good reviews, people really know the production end, the moderatorsa do not allow anything outside of music... I get more info from the about new releases ect... than anywhere else. I've found out about more bands, i would've never even considered. It's tight.

the only Virgin remasters I purchased were Tattoo You and Exile. I may just pick up an extra one or two (AND end up reading all 22 pages...)

on a censorship note, we all know about the Star Star censor for the GHS remastered - but, is "c*nt" being edited out of Where the Boys Go on the ER remaster?

Title: Re: Stones remastered - The verdict?

I won’t be replacing any of my Virgin CD’s, only those albums in which I solely own the duff CBS versions of. In my case, that’s: Goats Head Soup, Some Girls and Dirty Work.

Like others however, I will certainly be interested in purchasing the newly re-mastered Exile if the release were to contain additional material of any kind.

It seems they used the US masters for GHS, that had been edited from the original 1973 release... so I'm assuming, unless a censored master version existed on another US release, then we won't see that again, it's only a guess, since I don't even know if the band sanctioned this or if this is just the tapes they decided to go with, without thinknig about the censored version...
I still think the Rocks Off live licks edit is the worst move ever, unecessary. At least this makes sense, seeing how in 1973 the word fucker wouldn't get radio play, and would be kept out of stores... so it was a safe move on their part to sell records...  I disagree, but it makes sense.

Actually as far as I am concerned the only thing that makes sense...is get in the freakin studio...let loose and play some rock and roll and blues...My ears are too fucked these days to rate re-masters.

I really don't see the point in re-mastering recent albums like ABB - it was only 4 years ago after all and the sound is not surely going to differ much from that version

I guess if they're doing some, they may as well do them all.

However, as the Virgin releases of these albums are now all deleted the point of the whole exercise is primarily to have them available again. The remastering is just really more of a carrot dangled in front of those of us who already own them to get us to buy them again - I suppose they have to be seen to be doing SOMETHING.

Whether you think it's enough is personal opinion. My ears aren't getting any better so I doubt I'll hear much improvement on the already excellent 1994 remasters and without bonus material I've absolutely no interest.

W/o extra material, this is an exercise in futility. I know EOMS is supposed to get extra stuff but I was listening to some boots today & it's a shame they can't give Strictly Memphis an official release.

An exercise in futility is putting it mildly. Sales of these 4 albums in the first 2 weeks in the US were reported as 7,000.

I think I mentioned a week or two ago that apparently that figure now counts sales since AUGUST when the still available Virgin/EMI versions of the albums were included in the Universal figures after they took over the contract.

Meanwhile, the Beatles back catalogue - which is all just old material and which hasnt been remastered in about 2 decades and wont be until the albums are reissued in September 2009 - has sold 21 million albums in the US in this decade alone. Second only to Eminem.

Well 320kbps isn't too shabby, I'm gonna feed these links into Cryptload and see what comes out.

It certainly is a shame they couldn't add any outtakes. They tried that for the 1993 Virgin reissues with Mick redoing vocals for stuff like Fiji Jim (he said so himself in an AOL interview in 1994 or 1995) in 12/93 at RPM in New York but that got canned for some reason. "So Young" that was used as a B-Side for VL likely comes from these sessions.

well, he was a massive pussy but he claimed to be a man. We split 3 sets in doubles 7 the other 2 guys & I played well. He's just someone I won't play against again. I learned in Nov. that when people are massive cocksuckers, you have to ignore them & just hope they die shortly.

Sounds to bright for my ears. Brown Sugar is downright sharp, maybe that's what they were going for?

I have worn out to no less than 5 LPs, and still prefer that version. I realize that I'm probably in the minority on that one.

I'm looking forward to hearing Bridges to Babylon, I always thought it was mastered really loud. I like this album alot too, despite the loudness... probably the first album I realized fell victim to the loudness wars... here hoping they tightened it up... ABB is so compressed, I don't know if it can be helped or not... jury seems to be out... I will know soon enough, and give my own opinion on the remastered sets...
My fingers are crossed Stephen Marcussen has done a good job... Remastering has become such a bullshit crock... too much can be done to ruin the sound... and so much can be done to make it sound like you just pulled out the vinyl record from 20 or 30 years ago, and get that great, non digital sound through a digital system.

I think I like the 2009 remasters... louder, but not in a bad way... audiophiles may argue the loudness, brickwalling stuff, but these sound better, and yes, gulp...louder...
Only listened to ER, TY and Undercover...
next up...
B&B, IORR and GHS...

Tell me about it!

I once got 'asked' to leave a bus by the driver for playing that album ('Flip The Switch' to be exact) at full volume - on a walkman.

He stopped the vehicle and suggested I get off as - even though I was sitting about 25 feet behind him - the noise was affecting his concentration.

I told him that it was the Stones - not a 'noise' - and suggested where HE could get off.
