Title: Favourite 60's Female Vocal Group?
Post by Honky Tonk Man on Jun 9th, 2009 at 1:27pm
Okay, I'm sure I am missing a few, but out of those groups I have listed, which is your favorite?

My current favorite track at the moment is Gladys Knight and The Pips rendition of Heard It Through The Grapevine - blows Gaye's version out the water - but I will have to opt for The Supremes here, primarily for the sheer number of great pop hits they had in the mid-late 60's. There are tracks by The Chiffons and Ronettes that I prefer, but that run of great singles from Where Did Our Love Go to Love Child is quite hard to surpass.

Oh well: I may have included a couple of groups he didn't and I'm sure there are a few more registered users now!

Supremes for me, I don't know how many #1 hits they had, but I'm sure they had more then the rest on this poll.

12 in the States and 1 - Baby Love - in the UK

I knew they had plenty of top-ten hits on both sides of the Atlantic, but 12 No1's?

It will have to be the Supremes for me, HTM.  I remember well copying the choreography to Stop in the Name of Love with some friends.

One of my favorite 60's female solo performers was the great Dusty Springfield.

I have CDs by all these groups (Best of the Girl Groups, Back to Mono, Hitsville USA, etc.), and I can say unequivocally that one group reigns Supreme.

Shoot. This is a hard one. I love Martha Reeves....and I love the Ronettes and Darlene Love {which would be the Crystals, Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, the Blossoms}.....I was never a big fan of the Supremes {don't hit me!}, although I really like a few of their songs. They were just a bit too "polished" for me. Gladys Knight is a GREAT singer. Didn't always love her songs, although "Grapevine" is amazing. Best version I've heard.

Well Beyonce was a fan of the 60's American girl-groups.

Destiny’s Child were the 90's/early 00's equivalent  :D

I was trying to remember a 60's girl group that did "Leader of the pack" & it was the Shangri-las, I did a search & came up with this.

The Ronettes Like The Stones UnPolished Soul :aimama

i'm with honky tonk, you can't beat the long list of great singles by the supremes...
they may have been 'polished', but the grooves, the voices, the melody - unmatched by the ronettes or any of the other 'girl groups' and the ronettes were too tied to spector....who limited them.
whereas, the supremes had that whole stable of motown writers who provided them everything from baby love to reflections to someday, we'll be together.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXGz8i0I2L0&feature=related

and the shangri-las were different than any female group back then.....
all of the 'girl groups' were manufactured to an extent, but these two groups managed to find their own identity...

but that's just it,
i think the ronettes were as polished, albiet by the 'wall of sound'
i'll admit i never found spector's 'genius' ...
he through everything into a record, 10 overdubs of every instrument...
it was more of an indulgence than 'genius'
brian wilson took that approach, but it was based on the musicality, not just the effects.

I really do not see how The Ronettes are in any way more ‘soulful’ or ‘less-polished’ than the more successful Supremes. Certainly, the early hits such as Baby Love and Where Did Our Love Go are not entirely dissimilar in feel to those hits by The Ronettes.

Kilroy’s comparison with the Beatles and Stones relationship only rings true in terms of the marketing of the two groups: the Ronettes – as far as I am aware – were portrayed as the antithesis of the Supremes, who in turn, were a little more wholesome, perhaps.

KEEP VOTING!  :D

Can't vote for just one! I like the "rawer" sound, though. Darlene Love...the Ronettes...Marth Reeves.

the vandellas kicked ass....
check out those back-up parts at from about 2:10 to 2:20 ('don't pass up this chance, this time its a true romance')
it's such a cliche to say they don't make music like this anymore,
but it really doesn't get any better..

Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans

This is probably the greatest Christmas LP ever released - shame it can only get a spin in December.

I know everyone only gets the one vote, but there are too many who are either blind of have no taste. KEEP VOTING!  :D

I guess The Ronettes were The Stones of the girl groups & Supremes were The Beatles.

Yep

IMO, its the Stones connection - toured UK together in '64 - that is the prime reason for their votes in this poll.

Don't get me wrong, I adore the likes of Be My Baby, Baby I Love You and The Best Part Of Breaking Up, but they had few hits in comparison to The Supremes and not the  same kind of longevity.

All those yet to vote: GET A MOVE ON!  ;D

absolutely correct...
also, the ronettes were more sexualized, and rock fans took to that -
those were great tunes, but a supremes compilation is going to last alot longer on a trip than the ronettes.
