Title: the drunking thread (nsc)
Post by Starbuck on Jun 5th, 2009 at 12:36pm
god bless demon alcohol!

in honor of the last day of school, i'd like to share with you what many of my students will most likely be doing this evening:

in other news, i finished watching "gladiator" with my beginning level students today, before the final. i had heard that oliver reed died during the filming of the movie, but i never knew the circumstances of his demise......

(from wikipedia):

Reed died of a sudden heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta on 2 May 1999. He was 61 years old and was reported to be heavily intoxicated at the time of his death. Racking up an $866 alcohol bill, Reed had reportedly drunk three bottles of Captain Morgan's rum, eight bottles of beer and numerous doubles of Famous Grouse whisky. He also beat five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm wrestling at a bar called "The Pub." (The owners have since added "Ollie's Last Pub" to the sign.) Several of his scenes in Gladiator had to be completed using CGI techniques. His funeral was held in his home town Churchtown, County Cork, Ireland.

Here is a story
about a sinner,
He used to be a winner who enjoyed a life of prominence and position,
But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements,
And his selfish wifes fanatical ambition,
It turned him to the booze,
And he got mixed up with a floosie
And she led him to a life of indecision.
The floosie made him spend his dole
She left him lying on skid row
A drunken lag in some salvation army mission.
Its such a shame.

Oh demon alcohol,
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would say,
Damn it all and blow it all,
Oh demon alcohol,
Memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol.

Barley wine pink gin,
Hell drink anything,
Port, pernod or tequila,
Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks,
As long as all his troubles disappeared.
But he messed up his life and he beat up his wife,
And the floosies gone and found another sucker
Shes gonna turn him on to drink
Shes gonna lead him to the brink
And when his moneys gone,
Shell leave him in the gutter,
Its such a shame.

Oh demon alcohol,
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall,
A slave to demon alcohol.

Well my daddy never drank no whiskey

He never wet his liver with gin

My momma said she loved nobody else

But she really loved the drinking man

Respectable though my daddy was

Until he heard of mama's sin

He drank every drop of liquor in this place

And we never saw my daddy again

Because everybody loves a drinking man

Everybody loves a drinking man

Well my uncle was a real good talker

He'd talk the beak off a myna bird

Until someone dropped a glass of whiskey in his hand

He never said another word

Because everybody loves a drinking man

Everybody loves a drinking man

So understand that people will judge you

On your good and not your words

So if you're looking for a favor or two

You may likely die of thirst

Because everybody loves a drinking man

Everybody loves a drinking man

Everybody loves a drinking man

Everybody loves a drinking man

And we wonder why the real football sucks?

Check out this headline....

---------------------
Real Madrid signs Kaka

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Brazil star Kaka on Monday in the first step in club president Florentino Perez' plan to return the Spanish side to the glory days of its "galactico" era.

Real Madrid is hoping Kaka can deliver them a Champions League trophy like he did for Milan in 2007. (Laurence Griffiths / Getty Images)

While Real Madrid did not disclose financial details of Kaka's switch from AC Milan, reports say the figure is in the region of $92 million (€65 million), eclipsing the largest previous transfer set by Zinedine Zidane when he joined Madrid from Juventus for €76 million in 2001.

Kaka, 27, training with the national team in Brazil ahead of the next round of World Cup qualifiers, said the finalization of the six-year contract marked the end of a "soap opera" that will usher in a new phase of his career in Spain.

"Now the soap opera is over," Kaka told a media conference after a practice ahead of Wednesday's Brazil-Paraguay qualifier in the northeastern coastal city of Recife. "The only leftover details were the medical exams, and I've done them. The negotiations are closed and I have sealed my transfer to Real Madrid."

Kaka passed a medical in Recife earlier Monday.

"Kaka is one of the players that every team would like to have and Madrid had the chance to get him," Perez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero just before the signing was announced.

Kaka is the first player to join Madrid since Perez regained the club presidency unopposed last week. Future targets already discussed include Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich.

Perez has said he intends to revive his "galactico" policy which, along with Zidane, attracted star players such as David Beckham, Brazilian striker Ronaldo and Portugal star Luis Figo to Madrid earlier in the decade.

Kaka described Perez' strategy as "an interesting sports project."

"He's trying to buy other players, and I think he can make a very (attacking) team," he said. "That's behind my decision to go to this team."

Kaka said he talked with Beckham about his transfer, and the England veteran told him it would be the best step for his career.

"I hope to be part of this new project and help to win titles, both European and Spanish," he said.

Kaka, the 2007 FIFA world player of the year, turned down a record €100 million transfer to Manchester City in January.

Despite previously saying he was happy at AC Milan, the size and timing of Madrid's bid appears to have proved too much for the Italian Serie A champion to ignore. Last week, Milan president Silvio Berlusconi and chairman Adriano Galliani said the club had made huge financial losses in recent times.

Madrid's interest in signing Kaka goes back some years. Former Madrid president Ramon Calderon pledged to sign the player in 2006 when he was running for election.

Perez told Onda Cero that Madrid's pursuit of Kaka, whose real name is Ricardo Ezecson Dos Santos Leite, was aided by a collaborative agreement it has with Milan. Milan vice president Adriano Galliani was reportedly in the Spanish capital last Tuesday to pave the way for the deal, along with Kaka's father and manager Bosco Leite.

Perez is hoping to revive Madrid's fortunes after a poor season in which it failed to win any silverware while archrival Barcelona won the European Champions League and the domestic league and cup double. Nine-time European champion Madrid has not reached the quarterfinals of Europe's top club competition in the past five seasons.

Kaka said while he believes Argentine striker Lionel Messi of Barcelona should be declared the best player in the world, he hopes Madrid will overcome its Spanish rival.

"I hope this Barcelona domination ends and that Real Madrid wins the new titles," Kaka said.

Last week, Madrid appointed Chilean Manuel Pellegrini, formerly of Villarreal, to replace Juande Ramos as coach.

The departure of Kaka, who won the Champions League with Milan in 2007 and the Italian league in 2004, came a week after coach Carlo Ancelotti left to take charge of Chelsea. Kaka has scored 70 Serie A goals 23 in the Champions League since joining AC Milan from Sao Paolo in 2003.

Driving (A Bulldozer) While Intoxicated

Ohio man suspected of upturning neighbor's lawn under influence

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0630091dozer1.html

JUNE 30--Meet Robert Tite. In an apparent drunk driving first, the Ohio man is facing criminal charges for allegedly piloting a bulldozer while intoxicated. Tite, 57, was nabbed last Friday after he drove the heavy machinery onto a neighbor's property and uprooted trees and dug up a swath of lawn. Tite, pictured in the below mug shot, was arrested by Huron County Sheriff's Office deputies and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, criminal damage, and resisting arrest. Cops responded to the crime scene after the neighbor called 911 to report, "Bob Tite was driving a bull dozer through his yard," according to a sheriff's report. After posting $18,000 bond, Tite was released Saturday from jail, and is scheduled for a July 21 court hearing. Tite's bulldozer joins a motorized bar stool, a Zamboni, and a lawnmower as among the more unique vehicles allegedly driven by a plastered motorist.

Kid Rock's Badass Beer to debut at Comerica Park concerts in July

by Jessica Nunez | MLive.com
Wednesday July 01, 2009, 3:49 PM

If you're lucky enough to be holding tickets to one of Kid Rock's shows in Comerica Park on July 17 and 18, consider yourself now doubly blessed.

Drink Americas Holdings, the company that teamed up with Kid Rock last fall to launch his signature beer, just announced that the brew will be finished in time to be put in kegs and sold at kiosks at Kid's Detroit concerts.

It's only fitting that the beer, created by the Romeo-native who calls himself an "American Badass" will be called American Badass Beer.

The beer is so patriotic, it will even share a birthday with the U.S.A.

The Webberville-based Michigan Brewing Company will start production on July 4th. According to Drink Americas' CEO, orders are already coming in.

Yahoo Finance, July 1: J. Patrick Kenny, CEO of Drinks Americas, said, "We are very excited about the launch date, the beer and all the work that has been put into making Kid Rock's AMERICAN BADASS BEER™ a success. Based on orders alone we are off to a very good start. We will let the beer speak for itself as people begin to taste this great product."

According to a report from the Country Music Channel earlier this year, the new beer will create 349 jobs in Michigan.

'Stupid' drunk driver gets 10 months in cooler
By TONY BLAIS, COURT BUREAU
EdmontonSun.com

A "stupid" Edmonton driver with a "total disregard for the safety of others" who went on an 18-month drunken crime spree after his wife left him was jailed yesterday.

Robert Essensa, 42, was handed a 10-month sentence and fined $500 after pleading guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm, careless driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving with no insurance and numerous counts of failing to appear in court and breaching court orders.

The heavy equipment technician, who court heard committed multiple hit and runs in a stolen Coca-Cola truck, smashed into an electrical outlet at a motel before fleeing and hurt another driver after rear-ending him while driving drunk, was also hit with a two-year driving ban.

Provincial court Judge Terry Matchett rejected a defence call for a community-based sentence, saying Essensa put the public in danger with what he called a "spree of disregard for the law and disrespect for the court system."

STOLEN COKE TRUCK

Court heard police responded to a home in northeast Edmonton on Jan. 11, 2008, after it was reported a man driving a stolen Coca-Cola truck had destroyed a fence.

The delivery truck was later found abandoned near 151 Avenue and Victoria Trail after reports of multiple hit-and-run collisions.

Two days later, Essensa smashed into a raised electrical outlet at the Eastglen Motel and drove away after being refused a room due to being banned from the place.

On March 7, 2008, Essensa was busted as he tried to drive away after rear-ending a Chevy Silverado at Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street and injuring the driver.

Essensa smelled of booze, had bloodshot eyes and was staggering when he was arrested and later blew readings of more than double the legal blood-alcohol levels.

DRIVER INJURED

The collision caused substantial damage to both vehicles and the injured driver needed four staples to close a cut on his head. Essensa was not insured at the time.

On April 27, police responded to a family fight at a basement suite at 98 Street and 74 Avenue and nabbed Essensa after learning he had 34 warrants for his arrest.

Defence lawyer Akram Attia said that Essensa had been doing well for 10 years until he "returned to the bottle" after his wife left him and took his home and all his belongings.

"He was just being stupid and using alcohol way too much," said Attia.

Alcohol-fueled brawl clouds Maine cod fish races
(AP) – 17 hours ago

MILBRIDGE, Maine — The annual Cod Fish Races in coastal Maine were disrupted when police say alcohol-fueled fighting led to a brawl involving up to 60 people, sending two to the hospital. State Police Trooper Barry Curtis said Saturday's melee in Milbridge stemmed from a dispute earlier in the afternoon over someone's driving.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Town Manager Lewis Pinkham — also the police chief — and another person were treated for minor injuries.

One person was charged with assault and three others were issued disorderly conduct summonses.
The races are part of the Milbridge Days town birthday party. Teams dressed in firefighters' gear run across a baseball field, clenching a greased, dead, 20-pound cod, and get sprayed with hoses.

Man drifts a mile off Florida on pool float
‘He got really lucky,’ officer says of man who was believed to be drunk

BELLEAIR BEACH, Florida - A man who apparently passed out on a pool float at a Tampa area beach ended up drifting about a mile from Florida's shore in the Gulf of Mexico.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued the man on Wednesday afternoon.

Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Mariana O'Leary told the St. Petersburg Times they suspect the man was very drunk.

The Coast Guard says a boater reported seeing an unconscious man floating well offshore. The Coast Guard and a Clearwater Fire Rescue unit responded and found the man, still unconscious and wearing a life jacket.

He eventually woke up and was checked by paramedics at a Coast Guard station.

"The message here is this guy got lucky. He got really lucky," O'Leary told the paper. "Depending on what the tides and currents are doing, he could have never been seen again."

O'Leary said the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will investigate the incident.

A husband and wife are shopping in their local Wal-Mart.
The husband picks up a case of Budweiser and puts it in their cart.
'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife.
'They're on sale, only $10 for 24 cans he replies.
'Put them back, we can't afford them demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.
A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.
What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband.
'It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.
Her husband retorts: 'So does 24 cans of Budweiser and it's half the price.'

On the PA system: 'Cleanup on aisle 25, we have a husband down.'

Hangover Cures from Around the Globe
December 10, 2010 at 10:21AM by Justine Sterling

The gentle tinkling of sleigh bells or the hum of a holiday tune can bring good cheer on a normal day. But after a night of rocking around the Christmas tree with your good buddies, eggnog and spiked hot cider, those bells can be like sledgehammers and the carols like broken shards of ornaments digging into your skull. Hangovers have been around since ancient man first left his grape juice out too long and drank it anyway. Luckily, hangover cures were soon to follow (prairie oyster anyone?) and every country has their favorite - not all of which involve drinking a raw egg.

Mexico: Menudo

Before you run to iTunes to download a piece of Ricky Martin's first foray into fame, know that we don't mean Menudo the band. We mean Menudo the soup. Its main ingredients are tripe (beef stomach) and beef feet with a chili base. It's traditionally only served on weekends or during special occasions because it takes many hours to cook, as tripe needs a lot of time to mellow out its funkiness. To finish the soup, hominy is added to make a comforting, tummy-coating, starchy base.

UK/Ireland: Fry-Up

Most similar to the USA's favorite hangover cure from a greasy spoon breakfast is the British Fry-Up. Fried eggs, baked beans, bacon, sausage, black pudding (blood pudding) and cooked tomatoes make for a greasy pile of goodness with enough fats, amino acids, and vitamins (that's why the tomatoes are there) to soothe the heartiest hangover. For an Irish touch add white pudding; for a Scottish breakfast, supplement some haggis.

Mongolia: Sheep's Eyes

Ancient Mongolians, like those in Genghis Kahn's horde, were known to eat pickled sheep's eyes either steeped in or washed down by a briny tomato juice.

Japan: Umeboshi Plums

After a hard night of sake and karaoke, the Japanese put their hopes of a clear head into the salty/sweet hands of umeboshi plums. These plums, which have been pickled for months or even years, were at one point used to help soldiers in the Middle Ages battle against fatigue. Now they are known for their ability to aid digestion, help cure an ailing liver, and draw out toxins from the blood.

Korea: Ox Blood Soup

On weekend mornings mobbed street vendors throughout Korea sell Haejangguk, or "soup for the stomach." We've already seen its main ingredient in this list: blood. Ox blood to be precise. It is lip-tinglingly spicy (which takes your mind off the pain of the night before) and chock-full of vegetables that vary according to what grows in the region in which it is being served.

Germany: Pickled Herring

The Germans rely on Katerfrühstück, which translates as "Tomcat's Breakfast." It's a meal of pickled food, namely pickled herring fillets rolled around onions and pickles. The saltiness of the food encourages you to drink water — which is, after all, why you are needing a cure in the first place (hangovers are mostly just the symptoms of dehydration) — and these foods also replace electrolytes. Think of them as edible, fishy, Gatorade.

Russia: Salted Cucumber Juice and Black Bread

Russians swear by a breakfast of salted cucumber juice and black bread soaked in water. It may sound odd but think about what a Bloody Mary is at its essence: salty tomato juice. Another cure is attributed to Tsar Nicholas II. The "Nikolashka," as it is called, is a slice of lemon topped with a teaspoon each of sugar and coffee eaten in one bite.

Australia: Vegemite

Vegemite: It's Australian for hangover cure. The yeast-based spread is rich in B vitamins, which help with hangover symptoms like the shakes. Spread it on toast and try to ignore that it's made from brewer's yeast if the night before was filled with other brewer's products.

Ancient Rome: Fried Canaries!

When the vomitorium got a little old for the ancient Romans they would turn to a meal of deep-fried canaries. If it was a particularly bad morning, a couple of raw owl eggs might be thrown into the meal for good measure. But may we suggest you try a little tripe first before reaching into the birdcage?

Oliver Reed was probably the very greatest of the legendary piss-artists. He was one of the very finest actors of his generation, also. My dad was actually a member of the official ‘Oliver Reed Fan Club’ in the early 1960’s. He was a big star here in the UK and it is a shame that the drinking overshadowed the talent he had in abundance. Gladiator was meant to be his comeback, not finale.

To get back to the drinking-side of things, though: I love the story about the time Keith Moon flew over Ollie’s property in a helicopter and then how Reed fired at the chopper with a shotgun from his balcony.
