They may be at the top of the football world, but could Pittsburgh suck any worse?
---------- Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:55 pm EDT Manatee Community College forces Pirates to walk the plank By David Brown Yeeeargh! Shiver me timbers and fly the Jolly Roger at half staff, mateys! The Pirates, who have averaged 89 losses since 1993, sank to the deepest part of Pittsburgh's Three Rivers on Thursday after one of its split squads lost to Manatee (Fla.) Community College during a fundraising exhibition game. In some ways, the top of the box score says it all: Manatee C.C. 6, Pittsburgh 4. The Sarasota Herald-Review, however, ran a very detailed story — almost 1,000 words, for your Bucco masochists — about how the Lancers did the unlikely at McKechnie Field in Bradenton. It's only fair to point out that the Pirates lineup was filled out by guys who missed the cut in spring training. Several of the team's best players, including Nate McLouth, Ryan Doumit, the LaRoches and Stewcast guest Freddy Sanchez, did not play in the game. Yet several guys who have logged big league minutes — like Mets' killer Steve Pearce, Brian Bixler and Robinzon Diaz — were in the no-win situation lineup, as was prized prospect Jose Tabata. Virgil Vazquez, who contended for Pittsburgh's fifth starter spot this spring, started the game for Pittsburgh on the mound. OK, so your aunt was in contention for that fifth spot, too, but that's not the point. These were real, live Triple-A (perhaps even Class 4A) players. And these junior college Manatees managed to beat ‘em! Whatever excuse you want to drum up for the Pirates — spring training's almost over, the scrubs played the final five innings, the juco players wanted it more — we still say it's not good enough. Get ready Pirates, we'd like for you to take on our office softball team. |

Those who express fascination with the "history" of those older parks have obviously never had to sit in those dumps....I'm a die-hard Red Sox fan and I've seen baseball history there aplenty--some 200 games since 1974, inlcuding many playoffs and Games 4 and 5 of the 2004 ALCS--but I'd be the first to press the plunger and rebuild out in the suburbs....even with the renovations, Fenway is a dump and the newer parks have shows that new parks, properly done, can easily outdo the old ones.....hey Bucky, when was the last time that you had to pay $40 to park for a Twins game?

MLB to Start Steroid Hall of Fame
Posted April 5, 2009 Huffington Post David Henry Sterry In an attempt to generate more income in the face of the current relentless economic downturn, Major League Baseball has decided to start a Steroid Hall of Fame. They have not yet convinced a city to host what one high-ranking official from MLB described as, "A great way to capitalize on a glorious time in baseball history that has been unfortunately and unfairly tarred and feathered!" But they are confident they will not have to accept the only offer currently on the table, which is to share space with the Anchovy Museum outside Dead Horse, Alaska. According to a reliable source near the top of Major League Baseball, the Steroids Hall of Fame will be modeled after the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. There will be mementos, memorabilia, and busts of players. "Only we're going to super-size the whole thing, with these enormous statues of all the guys, their massive magnificent muscles rippling, those titanic gunboats fully loaded, I swear to God, it gives me chills just think about it. Plus, we have actual needles players used, we've got samples of the clear and the cream that customers can rub on themselves, and we even have the shriveled testicle of one very famous ballplayer, whose name I'm not at liberty to mention." A top official at Major League Baseball has leaked an internal memo revealing those players who are believed to be certain first-time ballot inductees. 1B: Mark McGwire. There's some stiff competition at this position, but you have to go with Big Mac. He got so gianormous, and then to watch him whimper like a neutered dog in front of Congress -- priceless! 2B: Gary Sheffield. True, he never really played second base, but he was a middle infielder, and he's such a horse's patoot, it didn't seem fair to leave him off the starting nine. SS: Alex Rodriguez. No-brainer. A-Rod went from skinny kid to Terminator Middle Infielder in like, 15 minutes. And he was such a weasel on TV lying right through his teeth, that's Hall of Fame stuff. 3B: Ken Caminiti. It's sad, but the truth is, when this guy was 'roiding up, he was a monster. And let's face it, we need a cautionary tale thrown in here for the kids. That's how we'll spin it anyway. CF: Lenny Dykstra. It was hysterical how Nails ended one season looking like a son of a toothpick, and came to spring training the next year with his neck, chest and shoulders so pumped up you could barely see his tiny little pin head. RF: José Canseco. Hey, if it weren't for him, the Steroid Hall of Fame would not be possible. He's the juicer's juicer, you have to give the devil his due. LF: Barry Bonds. Poster boy. We have these fantastic busts of his head over the years, and they just keep getting bigger, the last one looks like it could float in the Macy's Day Parade. And we have some spectacular "backne" shots, it looks like Orion's belt in pimples. DH: Rafael Palmiero. When he got up in front of Congress and started waving that steroid-bloated finger around, we were laughing our *sses off. (SIDEBAR: We need to start a smear campaign against Congress, get their nose out of our business, I mean come on, why aren't they tracking down Osama bin Laden? don't they have a broken health care system to fix? shouldn't they be getting the economy out of the crapper?) PITCHER: Roger Clemens. The worst liar in the history of liars. When he was testifying, his eyes kept shifting all around, he couldn't stop tugging at his collar, licking his lips. If it wasn't so funny, it would've been pitiful. Critics claim that Major League Baseball willfully turned a blind eye to the use of steroids, because of the unprecedented growth in popularity and profits due to suddenly gigantic ballplayers hitting ridiculous amounts of home runs. "We couldn't kill the goose that was laying all those golden eggs," one high-ranking Major League Baseball official said, "and now we've found a sure-fire way of turning that goose into a cash cow. And steroid wise, at this point mostly we've gone after journeyman, minor leaguers, and Latinos, for obvious reasons, but we're very close to revealing some very big names. Big, big, big! Trust me, we've only seen the tip of the iceberg here, but instead of going down like the Titanic, we're setting course for a brave new world, and we want to keep doing the most important thing there is, what Major League Baseball is really all about: making money." |

RIP Harry Kalas
this just came over the wire... supposedly the legendary broadcaster passed out in the booth today and later passed away. Very sad news. at least he got to see his Phillies win another World Series |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by sweetcharmedlife on Apr 13th, 2009 at 2:14pm
WASHINGTON -- Longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas, who punctuated innumerable home runs with his "Outta here!" call, died Monday after being found passed out in the broadcast booth before a game against the Washington Nationals. He was 73.
"We lost our voice today," team president David Montgomery said, his voice cracking. "He has loved our game and made just a tremendous contribution to our sport and certainly to our organization." Kalas was discovered by the Phillies director of broadcasting about 12:30 p.m. and taken to a local hospital, Montgomery said. Soundtrack to Kalas' career Over time, Harry Kalas evolved into one of Philadelphia's beloved sports figures. Some of the more memorable notes in his illustrious broadcasting career: • Six no-hitters • Mike Schmidt's 500th home run on April 18, 1987 • Every one of Steve Carlton's starts from 1972-86 • Pete Rose's 3,631st career hit on Aug. 10, 1981 (which broke Stan Musial's NL record) • First game at the Houston Astrodome, April 12, 1965 • First game at Veterans Stadium, April 10, 1971 • First game at Citizens Bank Park, April 12, 2004 • Was in his 43rd year as a MLB broadcaster • Phillies broadcaster since 1971; member of original Astros broadcast team in 1965 • Inducted into the broadcaster's wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 • Named Pennsylvania Sportscaster of the year 18 times Kalas had surgery earlier this year for an undisclosed ailment that the team characterized as minor. He looked somewhat drawn last week as the Phillies opened the season at home. Kalas joined the Phillies in 1971. Before that, he was a member of the Houston Astros' broadcast team from 1965-70. In 2002, he received the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for his contributions to the game. "Players come and go, but 'Outta here!' -- that's forever," said Scott Franzke, a Phillies radio broadcaster. Kalas lent his sonorous voice to everything from puppies to soup. He did work for NFL Films, was the voice for Chunky Soup commercials and Animal Planet's annual tongue-in-cheek Super Bowl competitor, the Puppy Bowl. Kalas joined the Phillies radio and TV broadcast team the year the club moved into its former home, Veterans Stadium, replacing fan favorite Bill Campbell. He wasn't immediately embraced by Phillies fans, despite being paired with Richie Ashburn, a Hall of Famer as a player, and longtime announcer. But Kalas evolved into a beloved sports figure in Philadelphia. He and Ashburn grew into a popular team, and shared the booth until Ashburn's death in 1997. "Major League Baseball has lost one of the great voices of our generation," commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Baseball announcers have a special bond with their audience, and Harry represented the best of baseball not only to the fans of the Phillies, but to fans everywhere." Kalas fell in love with baseball at a young age, when his father took him to Comiskey Park to see the Chicago White Sox play the Washington Senators. It was a rainy night, and Kalas sat with his dad behind the Washington dugout. "Because of the rains, the field was covered," he told The Associated Press. "There was no batting practice, so the players really didn't have anything to do. Mickey Vernon popped out of the dugout, saw this wide-eyed kid -- me -- picked me up, took me in the dugout, gave me a baseball, introduced me to his teammates, and thus began my love of baseball and the Washington Senators." He maintained that enthusiasm for the game throughout his career. The son of a Methodist minister, the Naperville, Ill., native graduated from the University of Iowa in 1959 with a degree in speech, radio and television. He was drafted into the Army soon after he graduated. In 1961, he became sports director at Hawaii radio station KGU and also broadcast games for the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League and the University of Hawaii. |

Manroid gets busted:
Major League Baseball is expected to announce Thursday that Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games, The Los Angeles Times is reporting. Ramirez's test result and suspension are expected to be announced Thursday, The Times said. Citing a source familiar with the matter, The Times reported Ramirez is expected to say the positive test results were a result of medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue. If his suspension begins Thursday, Ramirez would be eligible to return to the Dodgers' lineup for their July 3 game against San Diego. Triple-A outfielder Xavier Paul has been told by the Dodgers that he will be promoted later today, according to The Times. In his first full season as a Dodger, Ramirez is batting .348 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. Los Angeles has bolted to a 21-8 record -- best in the majors -- and a 13-0 record at home that set the modern major league record for home winning streak to start a season. |

This just keeps getting better and better:
A source close to Manny Ramirez said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not “an agent customarily used for performance enhancing.” At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said. |

(05-27) 19:29 PDT Santa Ana, Calif. (AP) --
A grand jury has indicted the man accused of killing Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others when a minivan smashed into their car last month. Orange County prosecutors say Andrew Gallo was indicted Wednesday on three counts of murder and three other felonies for the April 9 crash. Gallo already faced similar charges, but prosecutors say the indictment will help expedite the case by skipping the preliminary hearing. Police say Gallo had nearly triple the legal blood-alcohol level when his minivan ran a red light and crashed in Fullerton. Adenhart died hours after he made his season debut by pitching six scoreless innings. Two others were also killed and a third was critically injured |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Starbuck on Jun 2nd, 2009 at 2:26pm
test joe to be safe, but i'd be surprised. the man can flat out hit. he's the tony gwynn of this era IMO. staying healthy is his biggest problem, which is why twins brass out to move him to 3rd. (we have another good young prospect at triple A who could take over behind the plate and get his body abused).
as for the recent power surge, everyone has always thought he was capable of hitting for power as well as average, but we have been waiting for those skills to develop. now they're here! dude needs to catch some respectable veteran pitching however....we got the closer and a few decent starters, but sheesh...baker and liriano are tanking worse than motels's last six threads. |
|
Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Saint Sway on Jun 2nd, 2009 at 2:37pm
Tony Gwynn never jacked 11 HRs in one month
Mauer's power surge is coming off of recent surgery. Its common for athletes to turn to HGH to rebound quicker from an injury. And MLB doesnt test for HGH again. I'm just sayin.... |

Twins pocket the Revenue Sharing $$$$ and don't reinvest any of it back into their club.
imagine how good they'd be right now if they had resigned and still had Santana and Hunter. What about Jason Bartlett? How'd they let him go?? |
|
Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Starbuck on Jun 5th, 2009 at 12:40pm
not resigning hunter and especially santana was, of course, a huge mistake. but bartlett didn't hit all that well when he was here....but him and garza for delmon young was about as big as us getting nathan, liriano and boof for AJ.
normally, the twins trade well. that one, however, was one big assed "D'oh!" |

___________________ MLB Adjusts Drug Policy To Allow David Ortiz To Take Steroids NEW YORK—Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced a new policy on performance-enhancing substances Wednesday that is expected to help former slugger David Ortiz, currently batting a dismal .203, to come out of his slump and return as a league-leading batter. "We have amended the rules of the game to allow David [Ortiz] to use any performance enhancer he can find, as baseball is pretty boring when he's not hitting home runs," said Selig, who added that Ortiz could be suspended for 50 games under the new policy if drug tests show he is not taking any previously banned substances. "What David is doing right now is wrong, and this season could damage his reputation forever. The game of baseball needs him to do the responsible thing and superhumanly whack balls over the fence whenever possible." Moments after the announcement, Ortiz smashed through the conference doors with needles hanging from several different areas of his body and crushed Selig with a brutal thank-you hug, killing him instantly. |

Hamels had a good outing last night, but Happ's arguably the better pitcher this year. And Joe Blanton has been money lately. Reloading for a repeat... |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by left shoe shuffle on Jul 30th, 2009 at 11:38am Ortiz and Ramirez Said to Be on 2003 Doping List By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT Published: July 30, 2009 Jim Davis/The Boston Globe Some of baseball’s most cherished storylines of the past decade have been tainted by performance-enhancing drugs, including the accomplishments of record-setting home run hitters and dominating pitchers. Now, players with Boston’s championship teams of 2004 and 2007 have also been linked to doping. Baseball first tested for steroids in 2003, and the results from that season were supposed to remain anonymous. But for reasons that have never been made clear, the results were never destroyed and the first batch of positives has come to be known among fans and people in baseball as “the list.” The information was later seized by federal agents investigating the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs to professional athletes, and the test results remain the subject of litigation between the baseball players union and the government. Five others have been tied to positive tests from that year: Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Jason Grimsley and David Segui. Bonds, baseball’s career home runs leader, was not on the original list, although federal agents seized his 2003 sample and had it retested. Those results showed the presence of steroids, according to court documents. The information about Ramirez and Ortiz emerged through interviews with multiple lawyers and others connected to the pending litigation. The lawyers spoke anonymously because the testing information is under seal by a court order. The lawyers did not identify which drugs were detected. Unlike Ramirez, who recently served a 50-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug policy, Ortiz had not previously been linked to performance-enhancing substances. Scott Boras, the agent for Ramirez, would not comment Thursday. Asked about the 2003 drug test on Thursday in Boston, Ortiz shrugged. “I’m not talking about that anymore,” he said. “I have no comment.” The union has argued that the government illegally seized the 2003 test results, and judges at various levels of the federal court system have weighed whether the government can keep them. The government hopes to question every player on the list to determine where the drugs came from. An appeals court is deliberating the matter, and the losing side is likely to appeal to the United States Supreme Court. A spokesman for the United States attorney’s office for the Northern District of California, which seized the tests, declined to comment on Thursday. Michael Weiner, the general counsel for the players union, also declined to comment. One by one, the names of elite players tied to performance-enhancing drugs have surfaced this year. In February, it was Rodriguez and Bonds. In May, it was Ramirez — for the first time. In June, it was Sosa. Rodriguez had been viewed by some as a clean player who could eventually overtake the career home run record established by Bonds, who had been linked to possible drug use through the federal investigation. Rodriguez subsequently admitted that he used a performance-enhancing substance from 2001 to 2003. The Times reported in June that Sosa was among those who tested positive in 2003, the first time he had been publicly tied to performance-enhancing drugs. Sosa became a national figure with the Chicago Cubs in 1998, when he and Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals engaged in a celebrated race to overtake Roger Maris’s single-season home run record of 61. McGwire’s image suffered tremendously when, at a Congressional hearing in 2005, he refused to answer questions about steroid use. By 2003, Ramirez had long since established himself as one of baseball’s best hitters. Ortiz, however, was less known. In 2002, the Minnesota Twins effectively cut him after failing to trade him. He signed a bargain contract with the Red Sox and began the 2003 season as a backup. Ortiz quickly blossomed, setting personal highs in home runs (31) and runs batted in (101). He surpassed those numbers in each of the next four seasons. Ramirez, with his dreadlocks and quirky behavior, and Ortiz, with his gregarious personality and portly build, formed a dynamic tandem on and off the field. They seemed to feed off each other — not to mention demoralize opponents — by hitting back-to-back in the heart of the lineup. In 2004, they helped the Red Sox overcome a 3-0 series deficit against the Yankees in the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series to end decades of heartbreak in Boston. Ortiz had a game-winning home run and a game-winning hit against the Yankees and was named the most valuable player of that series. Ramirez was named the World Series M.V.P. after going 7 for 17 at the plate with a home run. Three years after winning that first title, Ramirez and Ortiz returned Boston to another World Series, where they defeated the Colorado Rockies. The pairing was split last season when the Red Sox traded Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers after team officials grew concerned that he was not playing hard in response to a contract dispute. In Los Angeles, Ramirez took off again, becoming popular among the fans and leading the Dodgers to the playoffs. But Ramirez’s hero status in Los Angeles took a hit in May when he was suspended after baseball officials learned that he had been prescribed a fertility drug often used by bodybuilders after they stopped using steroids. When Ramirez was suspended, he issued a statement that appeared to maneuver around his 2003 test results. “I do want to say one other thing,” Ramirez said. “I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.” That five-year period extended back to 2004, which excludes the 2003 test. Since returning from his suspension, Ramirez has been widely accepted by the home fans. In 48 games this season, he has compiled a .327 average and has hit 11 home runs. Ortiz, meanwhile, has been in a sharp decline. He had an operation on his wrist last year and missed nearly a third of the season. He started this year in a slump and did not hit his first home run until a month and a half into the season. Since June 1, however, he has hit 12 more home runs. In 2007, Ortiz said that he used to buy a protein shake in the Dominican Republic when he was younger and did not know if it contained a performance-enhancing drug. “I don’t do that anymore because they don’t have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I’m off buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican Republic,” Ortiz told The Boston Herald. He added: “I don’t know if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it.” In February, he said that players who tested positive for steroids should be suspended for an entire season — about 100 games more than the current policy requires for a first offense. www.nytimes.com/2009/07/31/sports/baseball/31doping.html |

His solution: more testing and more severe punishments. "I think you clean up the game by the testing," Ortiz said at Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, Fla. "I test you, you test positive, you're going to be out. Period. Ortiz, who emerged as one of the premier sluggers in the game in 2003 with Boston after spending six largely forgettable years in Minnesota, believes all players on all teams should be tested three or four times a year, and any players testing positive should be banned for the rest of that season. "If I test positive by using any kind of banned substance, I'm going to disrespect my family, the game, the fans and everybody," Ortiz said. "And I don't want to be put in that situation. So what I will do, I won't use it. I'm pretty sure everybody is on the same page." Ortiz is good friends with Alex Rodriguez, who attended Ortiz's charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic in December. It was difficult for Big Papi to hear that his buddy had tested positive for steroids in 2003, but he commended A-Rod for admitting his sins on ESPN last Monday. "The A-Rod situation was a little tough for the game because you're talking about the best player all the way around," Ortiz said. "At the same time, people have to give the guy credit because he came out and said what he said at the point of his career where he had done it all. On top of that, that was what, six years ago? The guy has put up numbers his whole career." Ortiz said one comment stood out to him above the rest during A-Rod's interview on ESPN. "One thing that he said that caught my attention a lot was that he was young and at the time, that was (happening) all around the league," Ortiz said. "When you're young and somebody comes to you with an idea of improving your production and things like that, sometimes you make a wrong decision like he did. But he's been playing clean and still producing, and he's still been the best player in the game. "If I'm a fan and I had to judge a guy, I would put that in the past and move forward," Ortiz continued. "The guy, he works hard, man. He's still doing his thing. He still has nine more years on his contract and he's definitely going to do some damage. Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Ten Thousand Motels on Aug 17th, 2009 at 9:11am Merlyn Mantle, Who Was Married to Yankees Great for 43 Years, Dies at 77 By DENNIS HEVESI Published: August 11, 2009 NYT Merlyn Mantle, who for 43 years lived through the glory and the tumult of being married to the New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle, died Monday in Plano, Tex., a suburb of Dallas. She was 77. The cause was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, said Marty Appel, a family spokesman. Merlyn and Mickey Mantle met in 1949 when he was a star player at Commerce (Okla.) High School and she was a cheerleader at archrival Picher High School. “I developed an instant crush on Mickey Mantle, and by our second or third date, I was in love with him and always would be,” Mrs. Mantle wrote in a 1996 memoir, “A Hero All His Life.” The Mantles married in 1951, after Mickey’s rookie year with the Yankees. For 18 seasons, Mantle symbolized athletic brilliance as perhaps the greatest switch-hitter in baseball history. With a .298 career batting average, 536 homers and 1,509 runs batted in, he led the Yankees to seven World Series championships. He was an All-Star for 16 of those 18 years and in 1974 was inducted into Hall of Fame. His injuries, and the pain he played through, only enhanced his heroic stature. It was only after Mantle’s career ended that the world learned of his drinking and womanizing. The drinking escalated in retirement as he struggled with what to do with himself. “It took me a long time to admit Mick was an alcoholic,” Mrs. Mantle told The New York Times in 2001. She, too, became an alcoholic. Cancer took its toll on the family. One of the Mantles’ four sons, Billy, had Hodgkin’s lymphoma for half his life and died of a heart attack in 1994 at age 36. Another son, Mickey Jr., died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000, at 47. Mickey Mantle died of cancer on Aug. 13, 1995, two months after receiving a liver transplant. Merlyn Louise Johnson was born in Cardin, Okla., on Jan. 28, 1932, one of two daughters of Giles and Reba Johnson. She is survived by two sons, David of McKinney, Tex., and Danny of Plano, Tex.; her sister, Pat LaFalier of Miami, Okla.; and four grandchildren. Merlyn and Mickey Mantle were separated for the last six years of their marriage. Mrs. Mantle lived in a condominium in Dallas that remained something of a shrine to her husband. Its walls were lined with photographs of him and magazine covers. A display case held three most valuable player trophies; the silver bat for his 1956 Triple Crown; and the balls he hit for, among others, his 512th and 535th home runs and for his record-breaking 16th World Series homer. Asked why she never divorced him, Mrs. Mantle said: “I adored Mick. I thought I couldn’t live without him. In many ways, he was very good to me, very generous. I never wanted a divorce, and he never asked for one.” |

Missed it. I was watching Cole (10-11) Hamels struggle against the Marlins. Phils gotta be worried about their arms. Did get to see Ryan Howard smoke #45 offa the second deck, but an L is still an L. Looks like they'll need to rely on the O to carry 'em, as usual. And Brad Lidge has to be kept faaaar away from any closing sitch... Tigers are losing - AGAIN - so the epic tank job is nearly complete. Jack Morris wants the ball on Tuesday. |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Nellcote on Oct 7th, 2009 at 9:30am
Not so fast SCL. Twinks have got jomentum. Yanks may seem to be best, however, there's something to be said for a team on a high. CC Fatassia is not Cy Young in the playoffs. Burnett has never been there. Texeria was a wallflower last year. Payrod is Payrod. Posada is griping over being benched for Molina. Wind will be blowing out to right tonight, which could make this a homer fest. If Twinks win one in NY, it's there's to lose in the Homerdome. Cabbage time.

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Nellcote on Oct 7th, 2009 at 11:15am
As far as the Red Sox are concerned....
We are facing a tough team in the Angels. They are well coached, are very balanced, have a strong bench. They can do things one thru nine. They have a lot of ways to make you think. We need to make more plays & score more runs than the Angels to win. |

I felt pretty good after Game 1 against Colorado -- then the Phils came up short the next day. Here's hoping they keep their edge. A 2-0 lead going into a three-game homestand would be *huge*, obviously.
I hate Manny Ramirez. Doesn't everybody, including, deep down, his teammates? Seriously. |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by Mel Belli on Oct 16th, 2009 at 6:54pm
And there you have it: the Phillies have something against a 2-0 series lead, again!
That was painful. Two runs scored on a fielding error and a bases-loaded walk. And Martinez taken out with just two hits on 87 pitches. Painful, painful. That should be a long transcontinental plane ride home. |

So what would you trade for a coupla World Series tickets?
Several hundred bucks? Your dog? Your first-born? How about creative serial sex? Step right up, Susan Finkelstein, 43, a rabid fan who really loves her Phillies. Married with children, current Penn grad student in liberal arts and onetime assistant PR director at the University of Pennsylvania, she posted an ad on Craigslist.com: "DESPERATE BLONDE NEEDS WS TIX (Philadelphia) "Diehard Phillies fan - gorgeous tall buxom blonde - in desperate need of two World Series Tickets. Price negotiable - I'm the creative type! Maybe we can help each other!" Bensalem police were scouring Craigslist looking for illegal activities, like pornography, drug deals and child molesters, when they saw the ad from "Desperate." Posing as a ticketholder, an undercover cop called Finkelstein in Philadelphia and asked if they could meet in a Bensalem bar Monday night. At the bar, Finkelstein was willing to engage in various sexual acts in return for a ticket, said Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran. Then, she asked if the ticketholder had two tickets, and he claimed he did and she was willing to up the sexcapades, according to Harran. After all, she posted on Facebook that she was "very, very liberal." "She was overcome with Phillies fever," said her attorney William J. Brennan. Well, Finkelstein got herself a ticket, but not for the World Series. She will be receiving a summons via mail at her home on St. Barnards Place near Springfield Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia to appear in Bensalem court on charges of soliciting prostitution and related misdemeanors. No court date is set. No one answered Daily News calls to her home. So how long did this sweettalking last? "It was quick," said Harran. "About as long as it takes Chase Utley to throw somebody out at second base." And what did the ticketholder look like? "Probably a cute guy if I was a woman," replied Harran. But when the cute cop clamped handcuffs on Finkelstein, Harran said, "I guess she realized she's not going to the World Series." Her Facebook comment after the arrest: "Susan Finkelstein is wondering about the integrity of the police." |

AnalysisPhillies May Be Tempted to Pitch Lee on Short Rest The Yankees have not announced their rotation past Game 3 of the World Series, but their plan is fairly obvious. Their quest for a 27th championship has revolved around maximizing how many times their hulking ace, C. C. Sabathia, can pitch. They were smitten by how Sabathia volunteered to pitch on short rest for Milwaukee last season, and enriched him with $161 million so he could bring the same accountability to the Bronx. He is on schedule to start Game 4 on short rest and, if necessary, Game 7, too. The potential pitfall for the Yankees is that the Philadelphia Phillies are considering the same program for Cliff Lee, who outdueled Sabathia in Game 1 on Wednesday and dissected the Yankees in a 6-1 victory. Everyone on the Phillies was willing to praise Lee for his best outing in a postseason loaded with them. He has now gone 18 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. But no one — at least those with input on the matter — was eager to discuss whether it was tempting to send him out Sunday night for Game 4. “We’re not worried about Game 4,” said Rich Dubee, the Phillies’ pitching coach. “That’s a ways down the road.” The Phillies have two days to decide, and it is possible that the outcome of Game 2, when Pedro Martinez opposes A. J. Burnett, will play a role along with Lee’s pitch count in Game 1, which was 122. But they have been batting around the idea for about a week, ever since clinching the National League Championship Series in five games allowed them to align their rotation as they desired. Manager Charlie Manuel, who was noncommittal Wednesday night, acknowledged the possibility last week. Lee has never pitched on short rest, but that would hardly prove a deterrent. Just as Chase Utley would never admit to playing hurt — even if bones were protruding from his leg — Lee is not the type to shy from a challenge. In his mind, he is physically capable of anything and everything, as his 3-0 record and 0.54 earned run average this postseason suggest. “This is the same game I’ve been playing my whole life, and this is the stage that I’ve wanted to get to from a little kid,” Lee said. “Now that I’m here, I’ve already put all the work in. There’s no sense being nervous and worried. It’s time to go out there and let my talents and skills take over and execute pitches.” The Phillies are happy with their rotation depth and would have no qualms sending out J. A. Happ or Joe Blanton, who is 0-3 with an 8.18 E.R.A. against the Yankees, to start Game 4, and then Lee on normal rest in Game 5. They are also cognizant of Lee’s mounting workload — 265 innings and rising — and must balance the risk and reward of setting him up for two more starts, not one. “You know, you always are tempted to do something like that,” Brad Lidge said, adding later: “We kind of have to see things play out. I don’t know. He’s doing so well with whatever he’s doing, I’d just let it go.” In each of the Yankees’ two previous World Series appearances, in 2001 and 2003, their opponent gambled — and won — by bringing back its overpowering ace on short rest. Bob Brenly, a rookie manager with Arizona in 2001, made the aggressive move of starting Curt Schilling on three days’ rest for Game 4 with the Diamondbacks ahead in the series. Schilling pitched well in an extra-inning loss and was available to come back in Game 7, which Arizona won. Florida Manager Jack McKeon employed a similar strategy for Game 6 in 2003, turning to Josh Beckett with the Marlins leading, 3-2. With the series back at Yankee Stadium, McKeon prevented the Yankees from potentially gaining momentum against a lesser pitcher, and Beckett clinched the title with a five-hit shutout. Both Brenly and McKeon were managing underdogs and, as such, might have felt even more emboldened to use cutthroat tactics. Manuel feels no such pressure: his team is the defending champion. Unless the Phillies were to sweep the Yankees, they would need a fourth starter at some point, anyway, because pushing Martinez to start on short rest is unfeasible. They would follow the blueprint set by Arizona, when its fourth starter, Miguel Batista, pitched Game 5, before giving way to Randy Johnson and Schilling. The Yankees are prepared to go with a three-man rotation in this series, especially because their primary No. 4 starter candidate, Chad Gaudin, has thrown one inning over the last four weeks. Even though Burnett and Andy Pettitte did not pitch at all on short rest this season, they were refreshed by time off in September. Sabathia, who stymied the Angels over eight innings in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, welcomes another opportunity. “I’ve pitched a lot with three days’ rest and figured out how to do it,” said Sabathia, who is 3-1 with a 1.01 E.R.A. in four regular-season starts on short rest. “I’m pretty confident I can do it again.” He did not pitch poorly in Game 1, as the Phillies, aside from Utley, who homered twice, were 2 for 23 against him. But Lee upstaged him, mixing five types of pitches for strikes in a nine-inning masterpiece that prompted Yankees Manager Joe Girardi to search hard for a sliver of positive news. “One thing,” Girardi said, “is he can’t pitch every day.” Maybe not. But he can pitch in Game 4. The question now is, will he? |

I had never really followed him closely (as a general rule I don't pay much attention to the AL -- infernal DH, and all that). I liked what Charlie Manuel said in a postgame gaggle in the summer: along the lines of, "I've always thought he was cocky ... and he *is* cocky, but in a really good way." The guy is a gamer, no doubt about it. To do what he's done this postseason at his age is really impressive. The homer he gave up to Matsui last night was not his mistake; the short porch in right field just swallowed up what in other yards is a flyout. (The same goes for Utley's first homer in Game 1.) Too bad the Phillies' run production dried up not once but twice behind him. Yet they score 11 and 6 runs, respectively, for Cliff Lee's last two starts. They're bipolar. |

I will add to what has been said, to go from being inactive at the
start of the season to starting Game 2 at the opponents park is really remarkable at the age of 40. He is sly & deceptive. If he gets another chance at a start this series he will not lose it. 1st ballot HOF Pedro is, no doubt with a Red Sox hat. A Fraud in this round resembles the A Fraud of previous years playoffs. |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by left shoe shuffle on Oct 30th, 2009 at 2:26pm Charlie Manuel announced that Joe Blanton is the Game 4 starter. Cliff Lee will obviously go in Game 5. If you had told me that the Phillies would hold the Yankees to just three earned runs in two games, I would've assumed the Phillies won both. Pedro did everything he needed to do ... Phillies had chances against both Burnett and Rivera and didn't produce. Simple as that.
I expect them to win 2 of three at the Bank. |

i'm liking jeff passan more and more each day.
--------- Yankees widen baseball’s chasm Jeff Passan By Jeff Passan, Yahoo! Sports Nov 6, 10:52 am EST Less than 24 hours after the richest team in baseball won the World Series, its biggest foe began reloading for next year by making a trade. The Boston Red Sox are among baseball’s most affluent as well, so giving up a couple of prospects to the Florida Marlins for high-ceiling outfielder Jeremy Hermida(notes) amounted to a no-brainer. Never mind that Hermida will cost around $4 million this season and, depending on Boston’s other maneuvers, might play a fourth-outfielder role. The Red Sox, just like the recently crowned New York Yankees and another handful of teams with payroll flexibility, can afford such luxuries. In a market that could see an overload of young, arbitration-eligible players deemed unaffordable by small-market teams, those high-revenue teams could be in an even more dominant position than before. In other words: Get used to seeing the Yankees and their ilk in the World Series. How that can happen when Major League Baseball so proudly trumpets its sport as a more real testament to parity than the NFL is the collision of two combustible factors: the depression of the free-agent market and the increase in salaries for arbitration-eligible players. Free agency is supposed to be a player’s nirvana. In many cases, the automatic raises given to players in their fourth, fifth and sixth seasons can make them more. More From Jeff Passan * The Empire strikes back Nov 5, 2009 * Pedro locked in on his legacy Nov 3, 2009 ADVERTISEMENT So the trade of Hermida from low-revenue Florida to big-bucks Boston, just like the rumored deal of Mark Teahen(notes) from the Kansas City Royals to the Chicago White Sox, may be the start of an offseason as packed with activity as any in recent memory. With a Dec. 12 deadline to tender a contract to players, general managers will be in overdrive during the Dec. 7-10 winter meetings, trying to get some return on players they plan to nontender – or, more simply, dump. “Get ready,” one small-market American League team official said, “for a lot more.” The first stops in the selling GMs’ contact lists, of course, will be the numbers for executives with nine-figure payrolls. Nine teams cracked $100 million on opening day last year; five of them made the postseason. And if baseball’s equality argument didn’t die with that reality, perhaps it will when the have/have-not divide becomes even greater until the 2011 collective-bargaining talks aim for a solution. The disparity is greatest at the top, where the Yankees bathe in money while some teams can draw a tub only half full. Yeah, yeah. Grass is green, sky is blue, etc. Everyone knows the Yankees are the last living embodiment of Wall Street in American sports, and yet the figures still stagger: New York made $100 million more in revenue than any other team, according to calculations from Forbes. And the Yankees brought in twice the revenue of 18 teams. Granted, the majority of those teams receive money from MLB’s revenue-sharing program, to which the Yankees are the greatest donor. It doesn’t lessen New York’s ability to spend preposterous money, whether it’s the billion-plus dollars over the past half-decade or the $300 million lavished on Alex Rodriguez(notes), the $180 million given to Mark Teixeira(notes) or the $161 million bestowed upon CC Sabathia(notes). Those contracts, along with that of A.J. Burnett(notes), give the Yankees a commitment toward 2013 of $92.9 million. Which is bigger than the 2009 payrolls of all but a dozen teams. For the next few years, at least, they also put the Yankees in proper position to keep winning. Yes, A-Rod’s hip remains a concern, even after his transcendent October; Jorge Posada(notes) looks more like a DH/catcher than an everyday backstop; and Derek Jeter’s(notes) contract becomes an issue for the first time in a decade after 2010. Plus, Yankees GM Brian Cashman must determine whether to re-sign Johnny Damon(notes) or World Series MVP Hideki Matsui(notes) (or both – or neither), how long to extend Mariano Rivera(notes) (who said he wants to play five more years) and which, if any, of the big-name free agents this offseason appeal to him. The Yankees, almost without fail, appeal to them. Be it Matt Holliday(notes), Jason Bay(notes) or John Lackey(notes), the Yankees can offer more than anyone and can do so with the backing of a big, fat, knuckle-to-knuckle ring. Should they particularly fancy a nontender, they can pay him more – or give up a prospect to ensure he doesn’t hit the open market, as the Red Sox did with Hermida. Cash in baseball yields more than talent. It buys the freedom to take risks and the leeway to make mistakes. It gives players the knowledge that, come June and July, if a team needs to improve, that club can purchase reinforcements. It allows for peace of mind with the Yankees, who watched their plan to build around pitching from the farm system (Joba Chamberlain(notes), Phil Hughes(notes), Ian Kennedy(notes)) implode, only to find rescue with a quarter-billion-dollar bailout from Goldman Steinbrenner. Now, let it be said: Money does not equal a World Series championship. It never did and it never will. It does drastically increase the chances that a team will make the postseason, at which point it isn’t chalk, per se, but generally leans toward the most talented teams … which are often the most moneyed. There is some sort of equation to explain this from the perspective outside of New York, and it goes like this: $$$$$$$$Yankees$$$$$$$$ = suck. That equation won’t change anytime soon. Unlike the low- and mid-revenue teams freezing or paring payrolls, the Yankees should stay in the neighborhood of $200 million, if not in excess. The YES Network is a cash cow. Merchandise sales are going to be bonkers. Seats – even the champagne-and-caviar ones – will sell next year. A championship whets the appetite of every Yankees fan and leaves the lingering feeling that makes you hungry for more. The rest of the baseball world, meanwhile, wretches at the prospect of continued Yankees dominance. There is no equalizer, like a salary cap, to reel in New York’s spending – only the team’s weighing of bottom line vs. success, a scale that tips toward the latter year in and year out. Philadelphia was more than a sacrificial lamb, certainly, but the Phillies ran into a hotter, more talented Yankees team, and that’s a bad combination. It’s frightening to think the Yankees’ payroll was about $85 million more than the Phillies’ – the biggest disparity since the Yankees outspent the Marlins in 2003 by more than $100 million and lost – but it’s a truth that isn’t worth fighting because it’s changing no time soon. “The Yankees won the World Series,” team president Randy Levine said, “and all is right with the world again.” Although he could’ve chosen words a little less, well, embarrassingly obnoxious, Levine’s point rang true because it’s surprising that a team so endowed (with revenue, with fans, with history and, most of all, with talent) could go nine years between World Series victories and six years between appearances. That’s not happening again, not anytime soon. The landscape is shifting, the chasm widening, baseball beginning its descent toward a place it can’t afford to go long term. The consequences are playing themselves out, and right into the hands of the New York Yankees, who are poised to start the next decade just as they did this one: with a championship. |

johnson is a first ballot HOFer no doubt.
i am still wondering what the voters/writers will do when the roid class comes up for enshrinement. clemens, bonds, etc were all clear HOFers without the steriods....what will the voters do? say, anyone know if bonds's asterisk ball ever made it to cooperstown? |

I read today that the Hawk wanted to go into Cooperstown as a Cub but the hall is making him go in as an Expo. That doesn't sound right. I always thought the player had the choice. Is football the same way?

The hall has the choice apparently because some teams were bribing players to use their hats. Hawk had the majority of his hits etc as a Spo and think they got it right. Hawk still feels the Spos screwed him money wise so he wanted Cubs. Glad he's in though. Imagine the choice for the Big Unit? Which team wins that one?? Football seems easier because there are so few trades or major player moves compared to baseball plus the careers are much shorter. |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by left shoe shuffle on Jan 29th, 2010 at 8:42am Exactly. Wade Boggs reportedly wanted to sport a (Devil) Rays hat for that very reason. The TB organization even retired his number. He played all of two seasons there... |

Seems like I remember that when we signed Cansenco there was an agreement in place that if he made the hall he would go in as a Devil Ray. I think that's stupid too, but I think the Hawk had a good arguement for wanting to go in as a Cub. He put up some big numbers there, won his MVP and made more all star appearances. The player should have some say at least and from what I read there wasn't even a discussion. |

Title: Re: Baseball 09 (nsc) Post by left shoe shuffle on Jan 29th, 2010 at 9:12am Players used to have the choice. The HOF took it away a few years ago. |

Congratulations to Jon Miller on being elected to the Hall of Fame. Class act and the best announcer in the business.
