Title: RIP:Billy Powell
Post by mojoman on Jan 28th, 2009 at 12:49pm
Longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd pianist Billy Powell passed away Tuesday night.

Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Powell’s decades-long association with Lynyrd Skynyrd began in the early ‘70s when the band hired him as a roadie. Powell became the official keyboardist for the band in 1972.

At this time the band has postponed the January 30 show in Kinder, La, and January 31 in Biloxi, Miss.  New dates for these appearances have not yet been announced.

"Billy Powell on piano" was a frequent acknowledgement from
Ronnie Van Zant.  What a shame.  Guy could play.

I don't wish this to happen any time soon...but it will obviously happen one day...

What happens when Mick or Keith or any of the guys finally goes...

Fucking sad day for sure.  I hope they stay here on this planet another 30 some odd years AND in good health.  But it just sucks getting older and watching your heroes go.

RIP Billy.

In my youth, Lynyrd Skynard were Huge.  They were as Huge as Led Zep with the druggy kids.

"OOOH, that smell, can't you smell that smell..."

RIP BILLY POWELL

The only band member that was physically able to attend the funerals of his friends after that horrific plane crash.

I feel worse now than earlier today.
Good article here, with many links.
Say what you want, the intro piano to
Freebird is truly rock legend material.....

Sad.  56 is way too young.  Probably did not take care of himself and dabbled in things that are not too healthy.  It's amazing the Stones, specificaly Keith, have made to their ages.  RIP Billy Powell.

That guy was awesome!  Survived a freakin' plane crash.  His interview after the crash, with his nose all busted up, is just amazing.

He was like the glue in Skynyrd, and seemed to love the band and its music.  Great guy.

Friends of mine always quoted that lyric when they smelled weed, but the reference is actually to the smell of death.  Ironic, innit?
