Title: Greetings, questions, and such
Post by Aquamarine on Oct 25th, 2008 at 6:04pm
Hello, everyone!  Member 39 checking in--I was Member 39 of the original Stones fan club which I joined in 1965 and which cost (I believe) five shillings.  As a result of being in the original fan club I got an invite to the taping of Rock 'n' Roll Circus but couldn't go  [smiley=sad.gif]--saw the band many times, though, starting with the Albert Hall show in '66, and also was at the Hyde Park free concert.  I was going to introduce myself in the thread in the other section, but nobody seems to have posted in it for months so . .

So, my questions.  Firstly, every time the page refreshes, it's filled with the birthday boy's mug and I have to scroll way down every time.  Is there a way around this?  And where are all the threads discussing the, y'know, Stones? Apart from the three pinned at the top, most of the threads seem to be on other bands.  :-?  Is there a section I'm missing or something?

Anyway--nice to be here!  8-)

Welcome, Aquamarine!

Wow, you will be a welcome addition to this board. What a great history of loving and seeing the Stones! So you were at Hyde Park to see that new guitarist Mick Taylor, huh? Exciting stuff.

Sorry there isn't much Stones talk going on. Maybe you can help to rectify that. The truth is we REALLY need a tour. Or even a solid rumour of a tour. Anything.

Anyway, welcome to the asylum. We are glad you're here!

SV

Hi SweetVirginia, and thanks for the welcome.  :D  Oh well, perhaps I could come up with some of my Stones reminiscences to bore you all with while we're waiting for something to happen!  (Not that I ever met any of them, I hasten to add, but I did see all three guitarists--just about, because Brian was nearly dragged offstage, and I had to sit on someone's shoulders before I was able to see at Hyde Park.  But it was just in time to see Mick read the poem and release the butterflies!)

Well, when I get more time maybe I'll post some thoughts.  Now, if I could only figure out how not to have to scroll way down every time . . .

Welcome, Member 39 (which would also be a cool handle).  So, as practically an OF (original fan), let me ask you:  What is your opinion of my favorite underrated Stones classic, "It's Not Easy"?

Title: Re: Greetings, questions, and such
Post by Aquamarine on Oct 25th, 2008 at 8:09pm
Hiya, Brainbell Jangler!

Well, I agree that is an underrated Stones tune, though not one of my absolute favorites as I tend to lean toward the more blues-based stuff, and that comes out of a period when they were becoming more "poppy," seemed to me at the time--but it's got a great melody.  I haven't actually listened to it for ages yet it's totally memorable.

OK, you talked me into it, I'm going to dig it out again tonight.  ;)

Edit:  Good God, I've only got 4 posts, and I'm already a Regular!!  :o

you mean you can go and see it - like just 'round the corner, in yer wood?  WOW!

Just to explain why I'm now claiming to be from Louisiana, that's because since my days of the five-bob membership, I've become a dual-citizenship Anglo-American--I live in northern La. these days, but visit the UK often too.  (So, hi there, Edith Grove!)

Oh, and to make a long story short--Taylor.  Loved Jones (especially on slide), and Woody's pretty good, but the great thing about Taylor was that he turned out to be so incredible just when we were wondering if the band was on its last legs--and it turned out the best was yet to come!  [smiley=grin.gif]

Well, hoping not to bore you all to death, I'll throw out a few memories from the very earliest days.  'Twas the very beginning of the British blues boom, and I heard I Wanna Be Your Man on the radio, bought it and then Not Fade Away, and lost my heart forever.  (I'm still a major blues fan, and heard about most of those guys initially because of the Stones.)  Plus, I lived about 20 miles from Dartford, where Mick and Keith were raised, so I felt we were, like, neighbors.  So I parted with the 5/- to join the fan club, and I received the glossy pics, and the newsletters, and I wrote to ask for autographs and they sent them--to this day, of course, I have no idea if they're genuine, but they looked real enough, and they weren't famous enough to make their signatures worth forging, I reckoned.  I collected a complete set of the Rolling Stones Monthly.  I became the penpal of a girl who was associated with the fan club and had met the band because she kept leaving apple pies outside their dressing rooms, which apparently they appreciated (I was way too naive in those days to know if she was really some sort of groupie!).  Finally my chance rolled around and I got tix for my first show, the Albert Hall in Sept. 1966, the day Have You Seen Your Mother Baby was released as a single.  Long John Baldry, Terry Reid and his band, plus the Yardbirds, and the Ike and Tina Turner Review were on the bill.  Then the Stones appeared, my heroes in the flesh at long last--I stood on my seat (center aisle, about row 20) and screamed like everyone else.  :-[  Well, we did that then.  :-[ :-[  A few songs into the show, some girls got onto the stage, grabbed Brian (who was wearing a groovy velvet regency-style jacket--the pic in my avatar is me at about that time in a corduroy pantsuit I bought in Carnaby St. that was supposed to look like it), and tried to drag him off--the cops leapt on stage, and the show was temporarily halted.  I remember Mick and Keith looking really shocked.  Anyway, they went off, and after a while the show resumed, and I continued shrieking . . . .  ::)  The only specifics I remember, I'm ashamed to say, are of what they were wearing, and how out of my mind I was with joy.

Well, the next time I saw them live, time had moved on, the band first had become more pop-oriented, then Jumping Jack Flash had come out, complete with that amazing video, all seemed headed in the right direction, then there were the trials etc., we lost Brian, I'd become a hippie--I'll get into more detail about that era at some point if you'd like.  Don't want everybody putting me on "ignore" just yet!  ;)

Aqua thanks for the info on Brian Jones. I am a die hard BJ fan. They came to St Louis in 1966 when BJ was still alive but I could
not go because I was only 16 or 17. I graduated from HS in 1967. I have not seen them in person. I almost did in 2005 when
they came back here, had tickets but I could not go (due to my disability) so I sold the tickets. If they come again, I will make
another attempt provided they come to the Scott Trade (or whatever it is) center and I can get decent tickets.  Everytime they
come here they sell out. So 2005 was the only real time I would have seen them for the first time.

I am interested in anything on the Stones you wish to share, early Stones if possible but does not have to be.
If you have any pictures of them during their early days or  anytime please share if you feel comfortable doing so.

Thanks again.

Aww, too bad you missed them.  Will keep my fingers crossed for you that they tour again soon and you get another chance.

I'll be happy to share my memories of the early Stones (and later Stones for that matter), though I'm afraid I don't have any pics of my own--wasn't even worth trying with the old Brownie box cameras, and I don't suppose it would have been allowed anyway--but I have many newspaper/magazine pics from those days, which I'll try to share at some point (many of them are still in the UK right now).

Nice stories. Good to have you here - always great to see a long time fan join up. It's an asylum, but you'll get used to it.

Dont get too discouraged by the non-Stones stuff - that tends to be the case when there's no band activity, and it should be easy enough to ignore. When there's a tour on, we have live setlist and photo updates for example, and pretty up to date news info, but of late there hasnt been much to report.

The easy way round it that Some Guy refers to, though, applies to everyone !

'66 Royal Albert Hall concert, I saw a video of this (have you seen your Mother, etc playing as soundtrack) looks like a wild concert, were there 2 concerts there or just 1? Always great to have a long time fan join the asylum.  We love our Stones!!  And sounds like you have some good memories to share with us!!  And especially now in this very long Stones drought....

You will quickly learn how to navigate this place.  We are as varied as our threads, with some very "creative" personalities in our midst.  You will quickly learn which  threads to avoid and which threads may actually be funny or informative.

No, there was just one show.  Terry Reid ended up being asked by Jimmy Page to join Led Zeppelin (my other favorite band, though I know I'm probably alone in that), but he had just been signed by Mickie Most, so suggested Robert Plant instead.  Terry's still going, though, and last year did several shows with Mick Taylor--which I missed because I was on the wrong side of the Atlantic.  :(

I'll add some more thoughts from those years, then, if you all don't mind reading them!  As soon as I get time, anyway.  I'm enjoying reliving those years, and remembering the pressure to be either a Beatles fan OR a Stones fan, and all the weird stuff like the constant suggestions by third-rate comedians that the Stones were dirty, never washed, etc.  Strange days!

(Yes, it's my favorite color.  ;))

Oh, btw, I wasn't complaining about the non-Stones threads earlier, just wanted to make that clear.  Obviously it's fun to discuss all sorts of stuff.  Just wondered where the stuff about the guys was!

I never realized, until much later, that in Britain, you were either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan....not usually both. In the U.S., there was no problem with being both {and adding other bands like the Animals, Kinks, Yardbirds, etc., as well}.  I find that to be very interesting...

Just browsing the web . . . thought you seemed a cool bunch!

Well, to continue a bit then (and btw I was a Beatles fan too, originally, but there was huge pressure to be one or the other), in those early days the Stones were very much the "bad boys" of rock, especially by comparison to the Beatles, and it wasn't until way later we realized they were encouraged by the Loog to play up to it, by doing things like appearing on Sunday Night at the London Palladium (weekly TV variety show) and refusing to wave to the audience on the revolving stage at the end.  They also began to appear in the newspapers doing things like driving without insurance (Mick) and peeing on gas station walls (you bad boy, Bill).  But it was great because they got lots of TV exposure, were on Ready Steady Go (Friday rock TV show) frequently, flirting with the host, Cathy McGowan.  I began to drift away a bit during th Aftermath and Between the Buttons period, the music not being what originally drew me to them, and even when the psychedelic era dawned, it seemed at the time that they were copying the Beatles for a while--Their Satanic Majesties their Sgt. Pepper, We Love You their All You Need is Love, etc.  By this time they were constantly appearing in the papers in connection with drug busts, and it seems ironic now that we thought at the time that Brian seemed to be getting undue attention from the cops, since now of course we know he was!  This all came to a head with the raid on Redlands, and Mick and Keith ending up in jail--this was a major national story, and I've still got all the newspaper clippings.  We genuinely thought they were going to go to jail for years, and when they got off it was such a major relief--I can still remember watching live on TV at home as Mick was flown by helicopter to an interview that included the Archbishop of Canterbury!  The cops had really overplayed their hand with that one--in fact, it was a major editorial in the (conservative, then anyway) London Times that helped bring about the acquittal, and eventually helped get the law changed (about letting your home be used for drug activities, which is what Keith was accused of.  This applied even if you didn't know about the activities).  Another irony of all this was that because there was no internet, etc., it wasn't until years later that we all realized that the "naked blonde wrapped in the fur rug" that we'd been reading about was in fact Marianne!

Anyway, the band got themselves together musically, and when Jumpin' Jack Flash came out, and there was the video of them all wearing make-up etc., it started a whole new era, and I was definitely back on board music-wise.  Brian "left" the band (again, at the time we took this at face value) and there was this huge concert scheduled in Hyde Park, at which they were going to introduce their new guitarist.  All very scary, because suppose he sucked??  And then a few days before the show, there was the news of Brian's death.  Some of my "friends" actually laughed at me about it.  To me, though, being young, it was like losing a family member.    :'(  I never thought the Hyde Park show would go ahead, but they decided to dedicate it to Brian--so I went, and it was a sunny afternoon and the other bands were great (King Crimson in particular, I remember), and I got a good spot, and then the Stones came on and everybody stood up and I couldn't see a damn thing!!  But a nice guy, total stranger, lifted me onto his shoulders, just in time to see Mick read the poem--he was wearing white, fortunately, as there seemed to be dozens of people on the stage and it took ages to pick out the rest of the band--and release the butterflies (which I learned later immediately dropped dead).  And the best part was that the show was a cracker, and I knew Mick Taylor was going to cut it, and things were going to be even better than ever.   8-)  (Though a few days later, Mick went off to Australia to film Ned Kelly, Marianne attempted suicide, and for a while seemed likely to die, and with that happening so close to Brian's death, rumors of dabbling in black magic began to circulate more than ever.)

I'll add some more later if you like, I'm not going for the "world's longest post" or something!  :-[

(P.S.  I've been really enjoying the pics!!)

We discuss Stones to death here, and we are very open to off topics, especially the dreaded politics...

We love music, so other artists come up...

during a tour, or, if they ever get round to studio stuff, we are talking... even then we debate like in a political thread... opinions abound, and just our bums, they all stink!

Yeah, though I realize none of this is actually new information, it's been fun reliving those years--England really did feel like something exciting was happening in those days, what with Swinging London and all.  :)  Then the era of the street fighting men . . . Seems like another lifetime in some ways.

And the Stones always seemed to be in the thick of everything!  8-)
