Hello Jumping Jack .......................................................

Sister Disco ?!

Love Reign O'er Me ?!

...are you friggin KIDDING ?!

Nice . I do not believe they have performed Love Reign O'er Me since the United States 2002 " Mini " Tour .

Tell Keith " Hi " from me ...... I am quite sure Moonie will be in attendance as he mentioned that he was going to try and catch every single gig this tour ( ...... with the United States entering a very deep recession this might just be it for a good many years --- and that includes the Stones AND MACCA )

" Wednesday, October 22, 2008 "

" The Who pay back Detroit with rousing show "

" The Who kicked off a mini-tour of the United States with an energetic show at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Tuesday night, despite having just stepped off a trans-Atlantic flight. It might have been eminently more sober than their many gigs at the Grande Ballroom in the banner year of 1967, but the effect on the audience was as potent (if not mind-altering).

In his more dignified middle age, Roger Daltrey has reverted to the short-cropped, tailored Mod look of his youth, and it suits him. His voice is a throwback as well, with the strong, bright tone he had as a youngster. Daltrey is a master of the controlled yell, and if he's missing any notes on the upper end of his register, we didn't notice.

Wearing the darkest of sunglasses, Pete Townshend is the hopped-up middle-age punk, his arm windmilling over his Stratocaster as he chopped out those familiar magnetic riffs, each of which sparked an emotional memory.

There were a few first-night bumps -- Townshend had to stop strumming right at the beginning of "Pinball Wizard" to change guitars, and Daltrey broke a tambourine (not on purpose), then had to leave the stage at one point to retrieve his own guitar -- but the audience didn't mind.

They are one of the most quintessentially British groups, but The Who bonded with southeastern Michigan in the late '60s, and the bond is steadfast. The members donated their take from the show to two Detroit charities, Gleaners Food Bank and Focus: HOPE, because they wanted to give back to a community where they tasted their first American success, Daltrey said.

The 11,000 paid customers at the Palace will provide a nice shot in the arm for two charities that will be hard-pressed to help people this winter.

"We had our first hit record out of Detroit," Townshend said between songs. "I forget the radio station that played it, but it was a funny little record called 'Happy Jack' in 1967. We got the hit here, and then it spread all over the place."

Townshend also bragged that the best car he ever owned was a Lincoln Continental, "built right here in Detroit."

He recalled that "a guy from the MC5" attended their first Detroit gig, which drew "about 10 people. Maybe 20."

"Then I just found out that we played Southfield High School that year, too," Townshend said, to screams. "That's why we're here," he added at the end of his Detroit tribute. Modestly, they didn't mention that they were donating their fee.

Other musical highlights: "5:15," which had the audience dancing and the band jumping (despite Townshend's complaints of jet lag), "Love Reign O'er Me," "Behind Blue Eyes," "Eminence Front" and "Won't Get Fooled Again."

Townshend's elegiac chord changes, rising majestically, on "Listening to You" at the end of the "Tommy" segment, are a reminder of how, at their best, The Who have always been a communal experience, one that not only entertains, but elevates. "

'Tattoo' was played a few times on the '82 "Farewell" Tour.
Caught it the second night at Shea Stadium.  :)

Still quite a rarity, though - and a welcome one!

Hope it's still in the set next Wednesday...

Ready for this one, Joey?

Was way up front on the field and thisclose to Mr. Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend.
Before 'Tattoo' Daltrey says "We're gonna do one we haven't played in a long time..."

I yelled out 'Naked Eye', which caught the attention of Pete, who was lighting up a clove cigarette and tinkering with his rig.
He spun around in mock surprise and wanted to know who said that, so I yelled it again and he just grinned.

Made it to the rail by the time the encores rolled around.
And whaddaya know, they played 'Naked Eye'!

When it was done, Pete looked over and gave me a nod and thumbs up.

8-)

i was at the second night at shea also. wish they would release a copy of that show. the who's last sounds like garbage compared to the new clash release. tatoo was also played at the bridge benefit in 99 at shoreline ampitheater along with mary anne with the shaky hand. it was an acoustic show but still pretty damn cool. hope to see them do it again on sunday in philly!!!

Pretty Friggin Cool in my book left shoe shuffle .

Nice .

I have seen many clips of some of those Shea concerts back in 1982  . I too wish they would release a " BEST OF SHEA ' 82 "  ( especially since they will be tearing the damn thing down very soon )   .

Tonight (Friday the 24th) I went my ten year old son, Keith, up to the Garden in Boston for the Two/Who.  He's a fan and this was his first rockshow--he was blown away (I thought I should start him off right).  Our seats were five rows from the stage, six rows up--perfectly level with the stage--the value of getting through with Ticketbastard in the opening seconds!!   A Canadian band from Winnipeg called 'Inward Eye' opened.  They were a power pop, slightly punky, trio with a super drummer.  They were good.  They played about half an hour.  The Who came out at 9 PM.  Roger wore a white shirt and vest with jeans and looked slightly thinner than when I last saw him.  Pete, by contrast, looked like he put on ten or fifteen--no big deal, but he wasn't cocaine-thin like in the seventies.  He wore a black and white, horizontal striped "sailor"-type shirt with a black scarf.  He leapt about less (perhaps those extra 10-15?) but windmilled plenty and played superbly.  The rest was Pino, as stoic as the man he replaced, Simon, who never took his ski cap off, Zak--who is better than ever, if a tad more precise after his Oasis stint, and Rabbit on the keys.  The band was not particularly tight, but that seemed to be because they were trying to improvise and work changes into their songs more than on past tours--"The Grateful Dead" approach :-)
Anyway, the songlist....
1. I Can't Explain  --  Roger storms up, microphone twirling and Pete starts chopping away and it could be 1979 or 1989 or 1999, all is one!!!
2. The Seeker  -- jammed out a bit with some changes in both lyrics and music, the stop/start timing of this tune is super.
3. Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere  -- the rave-up jam/interplay between Pete and Zak is awesome on this tune, but never long enough--I want MORE!!
4. Fragments  -- Roger pointing out the "you" and "you" at the end made eye contact with me and gave me a point!!  YAHOO!!  I love eye contact with my favorite rockstars!!
5. Who Are You  -- HIGH energy, Pete really rippin' into it...the solo was done while leaning on his amp...
6. Behind Blue Eyes  -- they nailed it, Daltrey in fine voice, one leg up on his monitor while crooning it out.
7. Real Good Looking Boy  -- slow opening but Zak kicked it into higher gear at the end and justified it
8. Baba O'Riley  -- PERFECT!  Pete jokingly stated after that he's blown away everytime by the audience response and it must be this generation's Beethoven :-)
9. Getting In Tune  -- a rarity!!  sung perfectly and with a cool, tight ending.
10. Sister Disco  -- the drumming breakdown/coda was replaced with a short but tight Pete solo down from a stool (!) near his amp.
11. Eminence Front  -- very different than the early 80's versions, perhaps Pete's best playing of the night, VERY Hendrixy
12. Sea And Sand  -- short and sweet, not jammed out as much as other tunes this night or as in past versions
13. 5:15  -- as perfect as they can do it without Entwistle
14. Love Reign O'er Me  -- best version I ever heard, Daltrey fuckin' ON!
15. My Generation  -- powerful and bish-bashy, with a depressing Pete rap in the closing jam about how his generation "fucked it all up"
16. Won't Get Fooled Again -- the highlight, Roger nailed the scream perfectly, took my breath away
17. Underture -- wonderous and jammy and very unlike any version I've ever heard before
18. Pinball Wizard  -- with a new, odd Pete timing in the opening fan chording
19. Amazing Journey  -- Roger in maximum microphone-as-lassoo mode
20. Sparks  -- very different than past versions, much improvising
21. See Me, Feel Me  -- started strong, lost some steam at the end
22. Tea And Theater  -- well sung and played, if a little ragged around the edges, a sweet farewell, they hugged, waved, and exited.

Smooth ride home, sorry for the shortness on details, but tired...more tomorrow

I think it was just after 'Behind Blue Eyes'; a curvy (my guess, 40-28-36-ish) girl tried to climb on her boyfriend's shoulders from about the fourth row and fell the first time.  She tried again and got up there and Pete smiles and looks at her and says "See, I knew you had balance!"  She rewarded him by pulling up her shirt and showing off a magnificent set.  Pete's smile broadened, his mouth opened to say something, he seemed to think better of it, waived to her, and turned around to his amp.  The crowd was good, more energetic and slightly bigger than the last couple fo Garden shows I've seen.  And less fat and old people.  Unlike the last time, where I had to abandon my seats for upper deck dancing room because the old, fat people behind me insisted on sitting, the crowd was on its feet the whole show.

Outstanding Review ............ Nice Set - List  ( The Band is TRULY mixing it up every evening )

Really nice sound with minimal crowd noise. Only issue was a chatty couple who were
in the wrong seats starting at The Seeker until they got the boot toward the end
of Who are You. Some usher issues at that point, but that's the worst of it. I also was looking for my spare batteries during the encore applause, so some phasing there and before
Tea and Theater. I mistakenly used ones from a previous show. Didn't notice until the encore when the battery bar was around 1/4. They lasted, thankfully!

or split for 80 min cds, or split to your own liking. You may have to fix SBEs for
the fade tracks if you choose to use those.

Good accounting in both posts, Jizzo.
I'm certain Pete will have this incident chronicled as part of his continuing "research"...

Weeding today ?!

Joseph, sad to say, as the Red Sox did not make it to the final round of the
tournament, the weeding has been postponed.  We do have the 17th banner
of the Celtics being hung tomorrow evening @ The Gahden which will be televised nationally
on TNT (check local listings), thus, I thnk this shall be an occassion to bring a

" .. The Who is another S. Philly winner  "

" With the Phillies vying to win the World Series, the Eagles moving past .500 and The Who invading South Philly, the list of events was as long as it was lustrous Sunday.

And with apologies to the Abbott and Costello baseball skit, The Who weren't on first.

"There are three games being played today," guitar hero Pete Townshend acknowledged to a crowd still filing into the Wachovia Center, "and we know this is the smallest."

But the legendary rock band was definitely on, eventually winning over a full house with a 20-song set that spanned four decades of work and seven innings of Game 4 play.

The veteran tandem of singer Roger Daltrey, 64, and songwriter Townshend, 63, the only living members of the British quartet, opened the night with "I Can't Explain," leaving no microphone un-twirled, no Stratocaster guitar un-windmilled.

Classics such as "The Seeker" kept fans clapping and newer songs such as "Fragments" off the band's 2006 album, "Endless Wire," kept them scratching their heads.

"Over and over again they shout, "Get on with it,' " Townshend said playfully to and of the classic-craving crowd. "Who are you?"

With that segue, the band jumped into "Who Are You?" and followed with a stream of familiar tunes such as "Behind Blue Eyes," "Baba O'Riley," "5:15" and "My Generation."

While TV show "CSI" and its spinoffs, all of which use the band's songs as their intros, may have introduced a new audience to the band, the majority of fans seemed to come from The Who's generation and knew what to expect.

Daltrey, sporting a vest and blue eyeglasses, danced with his microphone, Townshend cursed with his mic and the band, including Townshend's brother, Simon, effectively blurred into the background.

Daltrey showed he still has the lungs to reach the high notes in "Love Reign O'er Me" and "Won't Get Fooled Again."

However, the mystery -- and the country's biggest distraction -- for many was at Citizens Bank Park.

Plenty of fans wearing Phillies T-shirts were in the stands, pumping their fists and, with their other hand, text messaging for score updates.

Still, the fans couldn't help calling The Who, who perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Borgata Event Center in Atlantic City, back onto the stage.

Once infamous for ending nights by smashing instruments into oblivion, the twosome showed its refined side, capping the second and last encore with a stripped-down performance of "Tea and Theatre" -- and with an outstretched teacup.

"Will you have some tea at the theatre with me?" Daltrey sang quietly to the restless crowd.

Cheers to that. "

The wife and I went to Mohegan Sun, the In'jun casino in the wild woods of CT last night to see the Who.  The show was definitely down a notch from Friday in Boston.  Roger's voice was more ragged and he glided around a few parts he came at whole-heartedly in Boston.  Also, Pete was not quite as intense.  However, Zak (to me) seemed better than ever.  He may be the greatest drummer out there today (others in the running would be Watts--of course, and Bruford, maybe Mastellato).  The casino was also not quite the place for a rockshow and my seats were most of the way back and up, as opposed to the GREAT seats we had in Boston.  At least I had dancing room!

I think they did one more song in Boston, last night's exclusion of "Anyhow, Anyway, Anywhere" was disappointing to put it mildly....Boston tiks were $135 for 6 rows back, 6 rows up (give or take), Mohegan Sun were $135 for upper deck, 80% of the way back!  Whilst buying tiks for the the latter venue, I had chance to score lower deck or floor but balked at the $175 price.  The wife and I ended up spending that much at the Michael Jordan steakhouse before the game!

There is a very good opening act (see earlier posts).  The Who should take the stage about 70-90 minutes after what the tickets say is showtime--it was 9:00 PM in Boston, 8:40 in CT.

TomL's review:

The Who was pure rock and roll last night in ole DC. Pete said I am glad we can spend this historic election with you. On stage at 9 sharp, no fancy stage, no whistles and bells, just a band rocking their ass off and giving it all they had. Every song was great but I really liked Getting in Tune. All in all it was a good show and I made it home to watch my Steelers beating the Redskins with 2:00 left. Had a great seat 1 section from the stage, and 16 rows up, perfect view. I get to my seat at 8:45 with beer in hand. The four people together was down one too many and I told them no problem I’ll just sit here. The wife looked like she did not get out much and had a few too many. She got up two minutes before the show started and never returned, the hubby went looking for her about three songs in and he never came back. So I had three seats to stretch those rock N roll bones. Get’s better. The other couple, the old man had a small TV with him; he watched the football game the whole concert. Never looked up once and never stood. WHY GO? Its jackass’s like that, that gives the word old a bad name. I am glad I went, even if it was by myself.  Keep on rocking boys until they plant you. Kin’s you would be proud.  Oh two couples behind me with ear plugs. WTF is this world coming too. If you get a chance go. Rock history again.

THE WHO ROCK WASHINGTON "

"The election is tommorow," reported a moderator of thewho.com's forum immediately after last night's Who gig, "but The Who get every vote in Washington DC tonite! Capital of Rock n Roll."

For the first time in a LONG time, 'Won't Get Fooled Again' was swapped with 'My Generation' to end the main set. 'Naked Eye' was added to the begining of the encore of a elongated, fantastic show.

Here's the setlist:

I Can't Explain
The Seeker
Relay
Fragments
Who Are You
Behind Blue Eyes
Real Good Looking Boy
Sister Disco
Baba O'Riley
Getting In Tune
Eminence Front
5.15
Love Reign O'er Me
Won't Get Fooled Again
My Generation
Naked Eye
Pinball Wizard
Amazing Journey
Sparks
See Me/Feel Me
Tea And Theatre

The Who mini-tour heads west to California later this week, then on to Japan.  "

" There is a very good opening act (see earlier posts).  The Who should take the stage about 70-90 minutes after what the tickets say is showtime--it was 9:00 PM in Boston, 8:40 in CT "

My Guess is that the band will soon schedule a ' make up ' date for the Mexico City Concert that was cancelled two years ago due to Roger's Health Problems  --- look for a  ' Spring 2009 ' gig and possibly some more dates in the SouthWestern United States . Who blows would be more like it after last night...Allright maybe not that bad. But what do get when you have a lead singer who can't sing and a lead guitarist who won't play lead?....One hell of a rhythym section, that's about it.Daltry's vocal problem's are not a temporary thing. He sounded terrible last night. To make matter's worse, instead of trying to compensate for it by singing differently,he just croaked his way through it. So you think maybe Pete would try and compensate by carrying a heavier load, more extrended jamming with the good backup band. Well Pete played very nice rhythm, playing some classic riffs well. But he didn't play much lead at all. A few short solos here and there was it. I mean I appreciate Pete going all VH1 Storyteller and giving us the history of the songs. But when he sings better than Roger and sings better than he plays....well that's not what you go to a Who show for......Add on to that some phony bs from Roger about how they had the chance to do 1 show at the Staples Center next door to the Nokia or 2 shows at the smaller venue, they chose the smaller venue. Well considering the Staples Center was booked for sporting events on both days they played the Nokia. I don't think so.

" THE WHO DELIVER POWERFUL PERFORMANCES IN L.A. "

The Who have now completed their U.S. mini-tour with sell-out gigs in L.A. in which Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend confirmed for anyone in any doubt that The Who can still cut it after the demise of the dearly beloved Keith Moon and John Entwistle. The Two are equal to the sum of their hearts! Pete Townshend was in strong form and engaged wittily and regularly with the audience, while Roger Daltrey overcame some early vocal concerns to deliver the powerful and extended set.

Can't Explain
The Seeker
Relay
Fragments
Who Are You
Behind Blue Eyes
Real Good Looking Boy
Sister Disco
Baba O'Riley
Getting In Tune
Eminence Front
5.15
Love Reign O'er Me
Won't Get Fooled Again
My Generation

Pinball Wizard
Amazing Journey
Sparks
See Me/Feel Me
Tea And Theatre

On the 2nd night, the band added the haunting 'Naked Eye' after 'My Generation'.

The Hollywood reporter of the Washington Post said of the gig: "The surviving members of the Who overcame singer Roger Daltrey's early vocal woes to wow a packed house in the first of two Los Angeles shows on Saturday. Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend offered visceral, often drawn-out versions of classics, nuggets and more recent fare that blew away the gripes that half a Who somehow just isn't worthy." (washingtonpost.com).

The band now heads off across the Pacific to tour Japan. "

Hey Rocks off ~ I've been delayed getting in my report of the AC BORGATA WHO show on Halloween ~ October 31, 2008. I was sitting home at 7 PM wishing I was there, decided to hop in my car with $50 even tho it was sold out with $325 seats. I thought wtf it's worth a shot. So I get there by 8 and no one would sell me a ticket for $50. I was watching the doors, and it was just casino employees, so I waited for a crowd and I sandwiched myself in and got through the gate!! I didnt plan this but I saw an opportunity and I grabbed it!! I got in without a ticket! Once upstairs, wine in hand, but faced a problem ~ there was another door to get in and these people were checking tickets carefully! I looked around and who do I see in the crowd? PAULYWAUL! I went up to him and said "Arent you Gazza's friend? I have a picture of you sniffing panties in London! HAHA BUSTING OUT LAUGHING!! Turned out he had 2 spare tickets that he didnt bother selling. I offered to sell one ticket if I could keep one for myself. So I got him $150 and kept the other one for myself. It all worked out great, everyone was happy. PAULYWAHL, KAHOOSIER & BITCH, in 9th row seats! The WHO put on a great show, not as good as the PHILLY show, but still an EXCELLENT night!!

" Daltry's vocal problem's are not a temporary thing. But when he sings better than Roger and sings better than he plays....well that's not what you go to a Who show for...... "

Bitch, that's the Overture to Tommy you've got there, followed by "It's a Boy."

"Captain Walker didn't come home/His unborn child wouldn't ever know him
"Believe him missing with a number of men/Don't expect to seem him again"

One of my favorite pieces of music ever.  Lucky you!

"Fire" is actually 5:15 (that was the wine, writing, officer!)  :)
