Title: Today Header Brings up a Question: What other band
Post by Kilroy on Sep 26th, 2008 at 7:04pm
The Stones, Led Zep, The Who and The BEATLES owe alot to the Drummer. What other bands, my ROCKS OFF friends need to give the Drummer Some.
With the Passing of Earl Palmer, one of the greatest drummer ever to play, Let's give the drummer their due. Express your thoughts on:
What Band needed the drummer they Have or had to do what they did or doing. :areyoufuckingserious
All serious or nonserious comments accepted, as a topic the need to or or the need not to express disdain for a particular band will be either accepted or rejected. I love this place, what a freedom. The stones to me owe an awful lot to one of the top 10 drummer of all time in a Rock and Roll Blues band history. Mr. Watts has always surprised me on what he played and how he treated each Stones Song. Alot of study has gone into his playin and how he did not over play when another drummer may have. Watts Rocks when needed, an falls back in the slot when the need to fall back in the slot is needed!  He has never overfilled the total sound. The Mark of a great artist, knowing not to overplay. That's the Drummers of a great bands badge. Let the Drummers have some.....................

The Clash

Musically, I always felt Topper Headon was their strongest card.

One of the reasons why the Stones have stayed on top for so long is because their drummer has never uttered those eight little words which invariably spell the beginning of the end for every band....

"Why don't we try one of MY songs?

Jughead of the Archies?
Maybe it was that beat that knocked HTW out of the #1 slot in '69.

Yes. I'll amen that.

.....And really how could we forget Don Fuckin Henley!!!!
(maybe not a great drummer but he IS the Eagles....but probably will be more remembered for his philanthropy than his drumming)

Then there's guy from the Tennessee Three that drummed for Johnny Cash....it was a unique beat.

I was thinking that the drummer was credited with the beat....but google steered me right.

("The band began in the mid-1950s as The Tennessee Two, consisting of Cash's friends Luther Perkins on electric guitar and Marshall Grant on upright bass. Perkins was the author of the band's famous steady, simple "boom-chicka-boom" or "freight train" rhythm.") - Wikipedia

I don't remember his name but long time ago (1981) I saw Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult at the MSG in NYC, I was there for Foghat as didn't know about BOC, it was strange to me that Foghat was the opening act. The drummer of Blue Oyster Cult stole the show, he is a good one, however their music was "ok" only, not great

I saw Iron Butterfly about a week before Woodstock in '69 {they were scheduled to play  at the festival, but it didn't work out somehow}. Anyway, their drummer, Ron Bushy, too a 20 minute drum solo during "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". It was pretty wild. After about 10 minutes, still drumming, he had to tear his shirt off.....
