Rolling Stones Back Catalogue to get a Makeover

Universal Records are to give no fewer than 19 Rolling Stones albums a makeover and re-release in the coming months. Not even one month has passed since The Rolling Stones switched from EMI to Universal but their new label are wasting no time in releasing deluxe versions of:

'Black and Blue', 'Bridges to Babylon', 'Dirty Work', 'Emotional Rescue', 'Exile on Main Street', 'Flashpoint', 'Goat’s Head Soup', 'It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll', 'Jump Back – The Best of The Rolling Stones (1971-1993)', 'Live Licks', 'Love You Live', 'Made in the Shade', 'Steel Wheels', 'Sticky Fingers', 'Still Life', 'Stripped', 'Tattoo You', 'Undercover', 'Voodoo Lounge'.

..and no, I dont know if 'deluxe' means 'extra tracks', but one can hope.

And like the rest of you, I'm bewildered as to why two compilations and five live albums are getting the treatment - but "Some Girls" isn't.

With such little time since the deal was consumated I cant get excited about another re-packaging money grab. If they had time to add unreleased stuff maybe or if there was some new technology but there isnt.I need another version of Exile like I needa hole in the head.Guess this will keep Mickboy busy anyway.

Well you gotta figure that delux means something more than merely putting Universal's name on them.

By now, they've all been so remastered that further remastering cannot be the hook.

Maybe they'll release a Karaoke disc so all us drunk ass Stones fans can sing along!!

Universals 'Deluxe Edition' series usually amounts to a 2-cd set, consisting of a remasterd original album, plus a mixture of bonus tracks - usually in the form of b-sides, live cuts, outtakes etc.

It SHOULD be good. Although as Gazza has pointed here and over on Tell Me, it could prove to be a waste of money for some of us. Rarities should’ve taken care of all the non-album b-sides for starters.

Yep - If you want all of 'em!

I, personally, am only likely to purchase those CD's in which, I only currently own the CBS version of. IE, Goats Head Soup. Some Girls is another - though for some bonkers reason - doesn't seem to be on 'the list'.

You could be looking at spending a fortune buying 17 studio and live albums all over again for the 4th or 5th time just to get, maybe, 4 or 5 discs worth of previously unreleased material.

No doubt theyve already factored that in - but theres also the fact that in the i-tunes era., you dont have to buy the albums again just to get the stuff you dont already have.

No way am I buying them all over again (there's still 1 or 2 of the Virgin and most of the ABKCO remasters that I dont have). I'll just download the 'new' songs.

There's no surprise Universal was going to re-issue. That was a given with the deal, no point in buying the rights and not selling the albums. Now... what will happen? Remaster, bonus tracks, live stuff never before released ect...
More than anything, after crossing my fingers on some real great bonus stuff, is this going to be remastered, and by whom? I think most of us, are in agreement, the 94's especially SF's and Exile are perfect now... They can only fuck those up if they make them louder and ruin them with some crappy EQ job!

I'll check it out. As i've said before, they might do something similar to what the Doors did. Re-mastering is ok - maybe 5.1??? Also, maybe official clips and b sides, alternative versions etc.

And as it happens, i've lost my re-mastered 94 Tattoo You - so there's at least 1 i'll get.

And i can think maybe they'll go back to the original tapes and remaster Love you live - which badly needs it. Mabye include the full version of Fingerprint File?

sometime during the mid '90's virgin records came out with an oversized issue version cd's.  these dandys were great.  they came in original record packaging cases.  i bought exile on main streeet and black and blue.  i dusted off my black and blue issue and last night and gave it a listen....haven't heard this in ages.

i know this is bit off topic

does anyone out there remember this and did you buy any of these?

black and blue rehearsals were done on long island ny and they have them throwing the sparklers that read 'STONES'
and it is so cool to have a teeny copy of that sheet that came along with the exile record.

everybody say owww

I got the original LP package cd's that came out of SF, Exile, GHS, SG & Tattoo.

Is Beggars part of this? If so, a couple more songs could be on. We could get extended versions easily. Stray Cat Blues fades out but there is a definate stop to it. Why not bring the volume up until it ends? That adds a bit extra to it. I think there is a alt version of STM. Or am i just imagining that? To be honest, anything before Beggars i dont care about.

If this comes out the way it should, we'd get a re-mixed Ya-ya's with Gimme shelter & Satisfaction added, plus the full Rambler. Not sure who owns the rights to the footage (Did the Stones arrange any "in-house" footage or was it all Maysles?) to include.

Sticky can have Let it rock added for a start. Maybe alternative versions? Isnt it about time the Clapton Brown Sugar came out? No clips, though i wonder if any of the rights to TOTP's brown sugar appearance might be available.

Exile can have what ever they want. A treasure trove of stuff. Alternative Tumbling dice for a start. Again though, no clips. What would be awesome, but what 100% would never happen, would be to release Brussels Affair (or at the very least, all live versions from Exile as a bonus disc).

GHS could have 2 versions of Starfucker plus we could get clips like Angie, silver train & Dancing with Mr D (Licencing permits pending). Any b sides we could add?

IORR could have the clips to IORR, Aint too proud to beg & whatever the other one was. Plus Through the lonely nights can be added. Isnt there a longer version of Short and curlies?

Black & blue needs another track. 9 is not enough. Surely there's more Ronnie tracks they could include. Plus of course, the 3 official clips.

Love you live could have full versions, as well as 1 or 2 more El Mocambo numbers. There was a doco of the 76 tour, so how cool would that be to have included in the package?

Some Girls could have the original cover - Legal issues pervading of course. All the clips - In HD if possible. There's a gold mine of unofficial stuff, but at the very least, we can have 3 official versions of Miss You. Heck, chuck in the 22 minute version too! There surely is 78 tour footage they could add a sweet bonus.

Emotional Rescue - Eh, who cares? Dull album & bland production. The crappy clips too i guess.

Tattoo had a pretty good spruce up last time, plus the extended SLAVE. But how about 2-3 versions of Start me up? All the clips in HD. Maybe a small doco on the tour. There was heaps of info about this tour.

Is Still Life getting a go? Who cares. Crap album.

Undercover - All the clips, including the different versions of the title track. Extended version of the title track too. Jools Holland did a doco on this, so if the rights can be got, include that.

Dirty Work - who cares.

Steel Wheels - Remix this sucker! Fuck off the 80's snare sounds which i despise. Bring up the guitars and bring down the synth's. Again, all clips & the making of doco.

Flashpoint - Do we really need this? No, we dont. Pity the fab Highwire & Sex Drive languish on this turkey.

VL - Lots of stuff here. Trouble is, the making of doco had VIRGIN all over it. So that wont be on. But maybe some info on the tour logistics, plus the heaps of b sides that came out.

Stripped has a shit load of stuff to include. Clips & extra tracks. Doco. You name it. How amazing would it be to get the old Windows95 computer game that came out???

B2B - Lots of remixes to keep us happy. All the clips in 5.1 if we are lucky. This is one album that could sound totally different & refeshing.

No Security - Shhhhhh. Walk away. Slowly. And quietly. Shhhhh

Live Licks - why bother? It was a hatchet job when it came out and sold accordingly. Just pretend it never happened.

And another thing i just thought of. Why couldnt each album have a description of the times & recording process? Could be PDF or (wishfully) interviews with people who worked on the records describing the sessions, equipment used, what the fashions and were, interesting going's on during recording. Why not have still galleries from the times with interesting tid-bits? IE: Still pics of the Stones in the studio from (say) GHS, with description studios & personnel used?

After writing and reviewing all this, i am way too optimistic, aint i???

There's a Some Girls going down in 11 minutes, currently at 10 bucks.

Most usually go for 20-30 on the "collector" market.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rolling-Stones-CD-Mini-LP-Some-Girls-Collectors-edition_W0QQitemZ120295616905QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120295616905&_trksid=p3286.c0.m234

However, they are surely the same mastering job as the CDs w/o the packaging that were released after them.

These are coming out starting next week??  There's no way they're going to have bonus tracks.  They just signed to the label - are we to imagine that they've had outtakes for these things sitting mastered in a can somewhere just waiting for this to happen?

The Universal site didn't have any info outside the release dates. I didn't even see Deleuxe anywhere. Looks like they're just getting out the CD's with their stamp on it, I'm guessing the deleuxes are getting rolled out later. You have to assume, if they don't recall the Virgins and get new ones out, they don't start making money. In that sense, it makes sense. I realy hope so too, because you can't remeaster and collect extras in this amount of time...

i think so.  the cd cases are a tad bigger than the normal ones.  they don't open like normal ones.  i have to pinch it or bang it out of the plastic case.  there is no hinge to these cases.  the packaging is exactly like the record cover was.  i don't think they make these anymore.  i am glad i saw them and grabbed the 2.  i am not sure how many they did like this but i am sure it would have cost a bundle to buy them all.  i think these cost like 20-25 bucks.  yes, i believe the exile cd did come with the mini postcards.

There's really two seperate catalogs. One they own the rights to, and the one Allen Klein owns. Hence the 2002 SACD's that ended with Let it bleed, and the 1994 remasters that began with Sticky fingers.

Quote:
In 1965, Klein replaced Andrew Loog Oldham as business manager of The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger had studied at the London School of Economics and was initially impressed enough with Klein's business skills to recommend him to Paul McCartney. Not long after, however, Jagger started to doubt Klein's trustworthiness. By the late 1960s the Stones decided to fire Klein, and set up their own business structure in 1970; however, a legal settlement meant giving Klein the rights to most of their songs recorded before 1971. Klein's ABKCO label released the rarest of all Stones albums, Songs Of The Rolling Stones (1975). By the late 1990s, some of the 1960s albums were becoming hard to acquire on CD. Finally, in 2002, Klein's son Jody oversaw a remastering of the 1960s albums, to much acclaim. Outside the Americas, they are licensed to Universal, now owner of their original home, Decca.

Are you new? ;D

I am still trying to work out what the little postcards that came in the Exile cd mean. It's all so bizarre. I remember reading a story about the bearded guy. Bill was unavailable or something.

Actually Pdog, i think Klein only owns Wild horses and Brown Sugar off SF. I dont think he owns the rest. Still, i guess they cant release it without them, eh?

At the time of the Virgin 94 re-masters with original album packaging i had to make a financial choice of which ones i would not buy. SF, Exile, GHS, Some Girls & Tattoo were locked in. I bought them all, then thought "Ah, 1 more" and got IORR too. I didnt care for black and blue as i thought the normal cd sounded excellant as it was. Maybe best recorded Stones album. ER i got as a present once. And lucky i did, as i would not have ever bought the cd. In fact, i probably would not have gotten Tatto you, but my tape was worn and i wanted the longer version of Slave. Now i've lost the sucker!

And why in hell is Made in the shade getting a makeover???

They are shared, I'm not sure the specifics. Stones have used Brown Sugar on comp albums Jump Back & Made In The Shade and look at what disc it appears on 40 Licks. That was completel;y split between the old and new catalogs. It was a first, in them reaching out to ABKCO to release a career spanning document. It had always been split. Brown Sugar and Wild Horses don't appear on the singles collection or the single replica boxsets... The Stones owed him a single, hence Cocksucker Blues and the song never getting released. I'm curious as to who own the b-side version of Sway. It was a dif. mix than thr lp version. I'm assuming it is Glimmer Twins, hence Universal can now release it. That's one of the things I'm hoping to get released.

It could be worse.
Jacko could own your entire catalogue.

Didn't Mick meet with Wyman a few months ago?  Maybe it was to get Bill to work on the special editions?

Still no official word on this from either Universal or the Stones themselves (rs.com are understandably too preoccupied with the latest and much more newsworthy 'back to school' range of merchandise).

However, the following post on IORR give some food for thought :

From HighwireC

Yes, the company is working hard to do some nice remaster, to find some outtakes and raritis and put it together to some Deluxe Editions. Universal will release them, beginning in 2009, probably.

But first you can find the "New Universal Stones" for digital download in the next few weeks or so.

I'm told, there will be some double discs, may be some triple one, some comes with outtakes and b-sides, some with a DVD (video), too.

BTW: The "Biggest Bang" DVD will get a release as Blu-ray this year, before Christmas.

Though not "confirmed", it sounds encouraging. I took bigger bang to a mates place when i got it. he's got the most unreal sound set up. So, when all the little opening title sequences came on, he was blown away. "Dude, this is going to be great!", he said. But then the quality of the show's was way down. Actually, qutie poor.

Can we ever hope for L&G on Blu-ray?

Maybe the stuff in the vaults willl be released after all, I don't expect too many outtakes but 2-3 by albums is better than nothing.
Loads of Stones' stuff coming out next year then.

Some further gossip on this & other Stones news posted on IORR today :

From Vilhelm (Mickijaggeroo) from StonesVikings :

Universal had a marketing meeting in Berlin last week, here is what was discussed concerning our boys:
- Deluxe editions with extra material and booklets. No further info of what that
material might be.
- It´s said that the first releases might hit the market already this year.
- New album next year. Yes, this was on the agenda. Let´s keep our fingers X-ed.
- A Greatest Hits box, wich will replace 40 licks, since that is now out of
print.
- New tour starting fall 2009. Also discussed, let´s hope it becomes reality.

My comment to the above: Some new info, some that already been ventilated here. Don´t shoot me, I´m just the messenger.
It sure looks good for the future, but as everybody knows when it concerns the Stones, nothing is written in stone

Vilhelm

....and from Toru from Japan

Mick has already finished writing over 20 materials for the comming album.
This is the information from Mike Koshitani who is a world-famous supporter of the stones.

My hunch is that the collections posted here on the tracker such as Pirates of the Vaults and Markos' last complilation Stones Rule (?) will prove to be better extras than we'll see. The 20 tunes Mick is supposedly working may be used 2-3 per remaster like those useless extra tracks on Licks.
