"It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you." Later, the McCain campaign told Politico that McCain and his wife, Cindy, have at least four in three states — Arizona, California and Virginia. Newsweek recently estimated the two owned at least seven properties. Democratic candidate Barack Obama used the remark to jab at McCain for his views on the U.S. economy. Campaigning in Chester, Va., Obama told voters, "I guess if you think being rich means you've got to make $5 million and if you don't know how many houses you have, it's not surprising you might think the economy is fundamentally strong." On the campaign trail, McCain doesn't refer to his wife's wealth, estimated by some at $100 million and based on her late father's Arizona beer distributorship. Obama's campaign has been trying to make the McCains' wealth more widely known to blunt criticism that Obama is an elitist out of touch with ordinary Americans. Obama and his wife own one house, the family home in Chicago, his campaign said. They bought it in 2005 for $1.65 million after getting advice from Chicago businessman Antonin "Tony" Rezko, an Obama friend and contributor who was convicted in June on more than a dozen felonies in a corruption scandal. The case had no connection to Obama, and Obama has said it was a mistake to work with Rezko on buying the house. In response to Obama's criticism Thursday, McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers asked: "Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?" In the 2004 campaign, Republicans tried to use wealth as a dig against Democratic candidate John Kerry even though President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were multimillionaires themselves. In 2005, Kerry reported a net worth between $165 million and $235 million, most of it controlled by his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry. According to her 2006 tax returns, Cindy McCain had a total income of $6 million. She has not released her 2007 returns, which she files separately from her husband. McCain's tax returns showed a total income of $405,409 in 2007. In a forum last week with the Rev. Rick Warren, McCain was asked to define the word "rich" and to give a figure. After promoting his tax policies, McCain said: "I think if you are just talking about income, how about $5 million?" The audience laughed, and he added: "But seriously, I don't think you can — I don't think seriously that — the point is that I'm trying to make here, seriously — and I'm sure that comment will be distorted — but the point is that we want to keep people's taxes low and increase revenues." Is McCain's relationship to the long ago, forgotten Keating S&L scandal, less severe, than this slum lord? I've yet to hear of anyone involved in real eastate/property management/developement who has morals or doesn't break laws. Am I hearing you right, this guy bought a lot, that was part of a purchase that got another property for someONE else at a discount? People do deals like this together all the time, who don't even ever meet face to face. I'm not saying these guys weren't, they may be swapping wives... But, I don't see how this is some huge scandal. You're treating this with the same contempt one should have for people like Mark Foley... I always thought Dems were bigger racists too... The ones who scream foul for blacks and freak when a black family moves in on their block... So many of the people I talk to (disgruntled Hillary supporters) are NOT voting at all. Too many people have lost their lives to secure my right to vote. Therefore, I refuse to abstain. Hell, write in someone. I don't care for either of them but one of them will get my vote and it's likely going to be McCain. Lesser of two evils, but WE HAVE TO VOTE!!!! While no fan of McCain, I just cannot possibly vote for a man with essentially no qualifications other than Hollywood and the mainstream media think they have found a sellable candidate to the masses.

I find the fact that he did not understand one of our nation's most important holidays quite a giggle. There are so many, and yet.....silence from the mainstream. His PR team doesn't air that. But aside from the media crafting of a candidate, he has no published record of what he has ever accomplished. Prior to his election as US Senator, most of which he has campaigned for President and voted overwhelmingly as "present" at votes which means he took no position, what has he done and what does he stand for - can't really point to a voting record. Okay, what about his work in Chicago -- what is his record there? What do we know about it? Not much really. I punched "Obama's Illinois voting record" into Google and found these two articles. The details of this relationship are out there Scully -- they are locked up in the University of Chicago where boxes and boxes and boxes of records of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge are kept - including documents relating to Obama's work. Problem is, the guy that was first told he could see them, was later told he could not. Well the polls seem to be bearing out a shift in both positives and negatives for Obama.
McCain has been effective in getting his messages out (finally) and he absolutely stuck his entire leg up Obama's ass in the debate last week. (of course the media says it wasn't really a debate now, it was a pre-debate discussion) The Russian invasion and occupation of Georgia provided even more evidence of the difference in experience, character and judgment of the two men. 74 days right? |
