Is China ready, I still hear a lot about massive air pollution. I am starting to get ready for this, it will be fun to watch. Hard to believe that it is already 12 years since it was here in Atlanta.

Beijing shouldnt have been awarded it to begin with.
Always enjoy the Olympics but the time difference when its held in Asia or Australia always means that I dont get to see as much of it as I would like. |

from a GB Track & Field perspective, Phillips Idowu has a genuine shot at a Gold, in the Triple jump.
As does Kelly Sotherton in the Heptathlon. Christine Ohorughhu(sic), an athlete i distrust and do not support or cheer, is another genuine gold medal chance, in the 400 metres. The time difference, however, means an evening highlights show, will be the only coverage i'll be able to watch. And as a big track and field fan (i attended the London Grand Prix, @ Crystal Palace, last weekend), that's frustrating. 100% agree with Gazza, that China shouldn't have been awarded the Games. But hey, that Scottish restaurant, McDonalds, and Coca-Cola, demand these things happen, so they usually do. |

China seems like the dirties place on this planet. Disgusting, and dangerous. i enjoy very few events enough to go out of my way, but like World Cup, I love watching The the real football games.
I hope when China takes over The USA, they at least reform their air quality standards!!! |

I never really understood that angle on the Olympics, the core part of which are not team competitions. Plus, I only care about track events, which are completely individual (even the relays are really). Its absurd, like high level absurd, to want one black guy to run faster than another black guy, merely because of the country he associates with. I'm hollering for the guys who can pass the most piss tests! And Jeremy Wariner, no matter what that freak of nature is tweaked on. |

Well the USA just kicked Russia's ass today. That's always a good thing. I think they are a lock to win Gold in BB. I'm looking forward to the games overall. Yes,the time difference is a bitch. You have to go out of your way to try and avoid finding out results so you can watch them with some suspense. Yes,China should never have gotten the games, for many reasons. But if your a sports junkie it doesn't get much better.

That's out on a limb there, Horatio. The humiliationism in 2004 and the 2006 World Bash means nothing to you? The addition of Bryant does not bode well in Olympic style play. Also, not one white player (U.S. pop. 303 million, 74% white) to act as a steadying influence, unless you count Kidd which most basketball purists do not. Redd, Anthony, Howard, Prince all questionable choices as well. Paul must control, or bronze is probable. |

BEIJING (AP)—A group of American cyclists has apologized to Beijing Olympic organizers after arriving in China’s capital wearing face masks.
Michael Friedman, Sarah Hammer, Bobby Lea and Jennie Reed released a statement Wednesday, a day after they caused a stir by showing up in the protective gear. “The wearing of protective masks upon our arrival into Beijing was strictly a precautionary measure we as athletes chose to take, and was in no way meant to serve as an environmental or political statement,” the athletes said. “We deeply regret the nature of our choices. Our decision was not intended to insult BOCOG or countless others who have put forth a tremendous amount of effort to improve the air quality in Beijing.” The host city’s air remains a concern with the start of the games approaching. Beijing has put into effect long-planned pollution-control measures, such as taking cars off the streets, and American officials are cautiously optimistic. Jim Scherr, the U.S. Olympic Committee’s chief executive officer, said his organization didn’t ask the cyclists to apologize. “Those athletes regret that action and have written an apology to BOCOG on their own behalf,” Scherr said. “They now realize and understand how their actions were perceived by the host nation and by the organizing committee.” Scherr said masks have been issued to national governing bodies that requested them. “I understand that about 200 of our athletes received those masks through the national governing body, not directly from the U.S. Olympic Committee,” Scherr said. “Hopefully they won’t have to use them.” "It smells like burning shit or something". |

Note the proximity of the eyes with respect to the nose, as well as the predilection for wiggerism. The inbred genetic warzone that created this man's face, also quite possibly created the fastest man who ever ran a quarter. Stay tuned for some serious Olympic excitement when this mutant hits the track.

Title: Re: The Olympics Thread Post by left shoe shuffle on Aug 9th, 2008 at 8:26am BEIJING (AP) - A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said. The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site. The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics. The stabbing came only hours after what by many accounts was the most spectacular opening ceremony in Olympic history and it has already dampened some of the enthusiasm. "They are deeply saddened and shocked," Darryl Seibel, a spokesman for the U.S. Olympic Committee, said of the volleyball team. The U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement that two family members of a coach for the men's indoor volleyball team were stabbed at the Drum Tower "during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant." One of the family members was killed and the other was seriously injured, it said, without giving details. The official Xinhua News Agency identified the attacker as Tang Yongming, 47, from the eastern city of Hangzhou. It said Tang attacked the two Americans and their Chinese tour guide, who was also injured, at 12:20 p.m. on the second level of the ancient tower, then leapt to his death immediately afterward. The second level of the tower is about 130 feet high. Seibel said the two Americans who were attacked were not wearing anything that would have identified them as Americans or part of the U.S. team. He could not name the coach. "They were not wearing apparel or anything that would have specifically identified them as being members of our delegation" or as Americans, he told The Associated Press. He said it is "too early to say" whether the U.S. delegation or athletes will require additional security. U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan said it was aware of an incident involving two Americans and was working with Chinese authorities to find out more. He said U.S. officials were in contact with relatives of the two Americans who are in Beijing. "Out of respect for the families involved, we can't say more than that," Don Q. Washington, another embassy spokesman, told reporters. Police blocked off streets leading to the Drum Tower immediately after the attack and cordoned off the area with yellow police tape. Security officers were examining the scene on the tower and below. Attacks on foreigners in China are extremely rare. A Canadian model was murdered last month in Shanghai, but police said that was because she stumbled onto a burglary. In March, a screaming, bomb-strapped hostage-taker who commandeered a bus with 10 Australians aboard in the popular tourist city of Xi'an was shot to death by a police sniper. Shanghai and Beijing are still safer than most foreign cities of their size. Punishments for crimes against foreigners are heavier than for crimes against Chinese, and police-linked neighborhood watch groups are highly vigilant. Chinese are not allowed to own guns. Even so, the U.S. government now warns Americans against muggings, beatings and even carjackings, especially in the nightlife and shopping districts of large cities. Built in the 13th century, the Drum Tower is one of the few ancient structures still in Beijing, and was used to tell time in imperial China for the city, using drummers who pounded their instruments to mark the hours. It is located on an important central axis of the city, to the north of the Forbidden City, the former home of the emperor. The White House said President Bush, who is in Beijing for the opening days of the games, was informed of the incident, and his heart goes out to the families of the victims. It said the administration and the Beijing U.S. embassy have offered those families any assistance they need. Also, U.S. officials have been speaking to Chinese authorities about the incident. International Olympic Committee spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said in a statement that the committee had received reports of the attack and was in contact with Beijing Games organizers "to find out full details, and are ready to provide whatever assistance we can." |

My personal congratulations to Michael Phelps, who demonstrated to the world that he is a down to Earth, clean cut, amazingly gifted athelete who opted to dedicate his life to becoming the ultimate Olympian rather than sit around and be some scum bag sicko.
Plus he consumes 12,000 calories a day. How many donuts is that? Anyone have a calculator? |

Here's some good Olympic trivia for you sports junkies. What are the only 3 stadiums to host an Olympics and an MLB Post Season game?

Australia is now coming 3rd in the medals. But our men's swim team were a bunch of duds this year. Stephanie Rice is going to be one very sexy, rich bitch from now on though.
That Phelps dude is pretty fucking impressive. Good luck to him. |

Can't believe we've won more golds than anyone but the US and the Chinese. (We only won ONE in Atlanta just 12 years ago).

Try this one. Only five stadiums have hosted a Summer Olympics and a World Cup final. Name them and/or the cities. (All of them are in Europe) One's a bit of a trick question as it hosted Olympic events even though the games didnt actually take place in that country. |

Title: Re: The Olympics Thread Post by Gazza on Aug 18th, 2008 at 7:21pm
The five are :
Stade Colombes, Paris (Olympics 1924/World Cup 1938) Wembley Stadium, London (Olympics 1948/World Cup 1966) Olympic Stadium, Rome (Olympics 1960/World Cup 1990) Olympic Stadium, Munich (Olympics 1972/World Cup 1974) Olympic Stadium, Berlin (Olympics 1936/World Cup 2006) Mexico City, Los Angeles and Stockholm held both events but used different stadiums for each. I slightly screwed up the 'trick' question. The Olympic Stadium in Stockholm was used for the summer games there in 1912, and then again for the equestrian events in the 1956 Olympics. The games were held in Melbourne, but for quarantine reasons the equestrian events were held in Stockholm earlier in the year. The 1958 World Cup final in Stockholm took place in a different stadium than the Olympics. |

It sucks to see this is the last year of basseball in the Olympics. The USA-Japan game was incredible. I had a friend on the 2000 gold medal team, who struck me out many times over the years. I did park one off of him, I remember that better than all the strike outs.

JIMMY PAGE Performs LED ZEPPELLIN Classic At Olympics Closing Ceremony
Aug. 24, 2008 LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page played an updated version of the band's classic song "Whole Lotta Love" alongside Leona Lewis, winner of the UK reality television show "The X Factor", at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Olympics Games earlier today (Sunday, August 24) in Beijing. Watch footage of the performance below. To mark the fact that London will host the 2012 Olympics, an iconic Routemaster bus circled the stadium. Lewis, Page and the real football star David Beckham made their entrance on the vehicle. According to Telegraph, some of the lyrics to "Whole Lotta Love" had to be omitted or re-written amid concerns that they could cause offense. The song was chosen as the centrepiece of an eight-minute £2.5 million British segment at the event in Beijing at which the Olympic flag will be officially passed to the London Mayor Boris Johnson. According to London 2012 officials, Lewis — who grew up in east London close to the Olympic site — requested a change to the song's second verse because she was worried they would not make sense for a female singer. In the original, recorded in 1969, frontman Robert Plant sings, "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love". But in the version that was sung today, Lewis changed the words to "every bit" of my love.
