Title: Quadrophenia aka: Quadrofuckingphenia
Post by Pdog on Jul 30th, 2008 at 7:13pm
Great Who album or The Greatest Fucking Who album...

"I'll take on anyone
Ain't scared of a bloody nose,
Drink till I drop down
With one eye on my clothes."

I remember how much this moved me, even before I "discovered" punk rock and started self designing my hair and clothes... drinking and fighting... this song still, at the young age of 40, can get me in that spot, you know, that place where you still get pissed at your parents rules...

"What is it? I'll take it.
Who is she? I'll rape it.
Got a bet there? I'll meet it.
Getting High? You can't beat it."

Don't let your weeding threads go to your head ( no pun intened) this song isn't about do bongers... This is about getting fucked up...

"I'm feeling restless
Bring another score around
Maybe something stronger
Could really hold me down.      "

Oh man... real rocking and roll... This is no hippie dippy who's next, this is motherfucking Quadrophenia bitches!!!

Anyway...  If you need to dust of you CD or if you're lucky enough to have some vinyl, please do so, and then post about this album... If you don't know what this album is about and you post, you're lucky I can't punch you through your puter', but I'll still punch my monitor...

The latter.

No need to dust it off, because it's the first 'oo album I reach for every time.
Never tire of it, and never will.

Lyrically and musically Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend's masterwork, imho.

Yes, and every member of the band was at their best at the same moment.  Some of the greatest performances by anyone ever on the album, especially Moon and Entwistle.  Incredible amount of work that must have gone into getting that album together.  Massive ambitions.

And like with Exile and the Stones, it was never the same after that, at least on record.  Shows were another thing.

It's an oldie but goodie.

From the new CD, I like 'MAN IN A PURPLE DRESS'! At first I thought it was about dressing in drag, but its about a priest. The new CD doesnt really hold up to Quadrophenia IMO.

Absolutely!
Hell, I get intense feelings just looking at the 'Quadrophenia' album booklet.

Listening to 'Is It In My Head' right now...

"I feel I'm being followed
My head is empty
And every word I say turns out a sentence

Statements to a stranger
Just asking for directions
Turn from being help
To being questions"

Thanks for providing the impetus to spin it for the quadrillionth time, P.

Townshend plays some amazing licks during that part, right in between each line by Daltrey.  Can't say enough about it.  Those guys on fire, nothing comes close to what they were doing as a band.

Indeed, a great fucking record from in to out, though disliked by three members of the band and almost every rock critic upon release.  Nobody knew the vapid "Who Are You" was coming - or "By Numbers," with its constant, off-putting whine about how hard it is to be a rock star.  Unless Pete was talking about the Quadrophenia reception, in which case I'll give him props.

He hasn't.

I think I've Had Enough is the unsung hero of Quadrophenia.  Especially the version on the movie soundtrack, where Daltrey's voice goes from tough to quivering to give you the true measure of Jimmy's angst.

2nd best city to buy real sestate in the US in 2008, and 3rd strongest economy in US in 2008... So, no, I'm a real, full time at home parent... My little road dog and me have alot of fun, and I'm not risking my life at 2am on some crazy streets ever again, I hope.
Whatever I amy do in the future for money, I have no idea. I'm really grateful I get to live like this, it is truly a blessing.

I am curious as to whether the 96 remix:

1.  Improves sound quality dramatically.
2.  Significantly alters the mix (which has been the album's main shortcoming among some members of the Who an d listeners.)

It's cheap at Amazon, but worth it?

I don't have the abilty to listen to anything besides the 1996 remaster and the MFSL versions. I think I like MFSL better, less muddy. I even remember my vinyl, 20 years ago, being muddy sounding. I'm no audiophile, I think audiophiles have alot of good info, but they are alos way too anal retentive.
