I like Neil Young, but that's where it ends... I'm so not a hippie, in fact, not knowing what it really means anyway, I think it is safe to say, I'm probably the total opposite of whatever a hippie is...

Seems like a word some old people use when the want to justify their particular lifestyle to themselves and feel victimized at the same time. Political term of art, that has practically died out in favor of other terms. Doesn't really have any meaning outside of that, that I'm aware of. Belongs in the Canned thread.

Title: Re: Are you a hippie? Post by stonedinaustralia on Jul 13th, 2008 at 6:20pm bob marley and reggae generally are not a hippie thing imho - if anything reggae was a "punk" totem - and pot smoking does not a hippie make :smoking being of a certain age i grew up with hippies (or people who thought they were hippies) they were all generally 4 - 10 years older than me and consistently gave me (and others my age) a hard time just because we were young- condescending bastards the lot of them - and very fascist too in their left wing radical way - the vietnam war was a big influence and a major radicalising factor i suppose - australian blokes were being conscripted - by the time i was anywhere near 18 it was over so those guys a few years older who had either been conscripted or were faced with the possibility were a bit self righteous about it* - the females were just as bad as they were still digesting Greer's manifesto which they had swalllowed whole without being exactly sure what it was and whether or not all the detail added up...so now i not only got a hard time for being young but also for being a male and don't get me started on that dreadful olfactory sensation of too much patchouli oil, boiling brown rice and not enough deoderant * really it was the guys who were threatened with conscription but were able to wriggle out of it some how that were the worst - they even had the gall to give the guys who fought a hard time for doing so |

I first saw the Stones in 1972, acid was .50cents a tab & my first pound (net weight) of weed cost $100. I guess that puts me in the Hippie category.
However, I am now in the fair fat & fifty category which doesn't quite fit in with the flower power image |
