Nothing even comes remotely close. Once they're gone, you'll never see the likes of 'em again.

The Golden Age of Rock has long passed and with technology etc now a career lasts months not years. When the history of music is looked at in 100 years the Stones will be the Pyramids of Rock.....

These things run in cycles.... kind of.

Arguably, Rock has been dead as a contempory art form since the early '80's or so, depending upon who you ask. It belongs to another age, like Ragtime, Dixieland, Mississipi Blues, Bigband, Bepop, Rhythm and Blues etc etc. Which is not to say that Rock itself is dead, just that it now belongs to a past age like the other above genres.

It has now been replaced by God knows what.... in fact I think the criteria for entertainment has now shifted and where once teenagers sat down with a 33rpm LP record and listened intently they may now be online fighting it out with Battlefield 2 or chatting with friends on Facebook. Music may still be in their lives but it will be on in the background while they do something else.

Plus the fact that the big money has kind of almost gone.... while the digital medium itself has been the greatest democratising element ever in the history of recorded music, the illegal downloads thing has killed off the ability for most people to actually make a career out of being a recording artist.  And as for touring, that will soon be too unprofitable as well, twisting the knife even further..

Hard to see how another Rolling Stones will emerge out of all of that....

That pretty much nails it. Rock and roll, and music in general, was my LIFE growing up - not just background noise. I'd run out and buy an LP at the store the day it was released, bring it home, slap it on the turntable, and then turn all my friends on to it. The Stones were EXCITING. It's a whole new ballgame now.

It all depends on how you look at it. The thousands of hours of video, the bootlegs, the pics, the records....the Stones live forever.... :wtf1

I think a huge reason of why new rock n' roll is losing its significance and popularity is because there's no sense of mystery anymore. All the great rockers have a sense of mystery surrounding them. They were almost godlike: Jim Morrison's and Brian Jones' mysterious deaths, Keith's lifestyle and legends, Jimi Hendrix's incredible playing and psychedelic feel...

These days with myspace and blogging and youtube and so on, it's way more personal. The bands seem like they could be your next door neighbor or your schoolmate. If Hendrix would release his first album today, there'd be hundreds of videos explaining his effect pedals, playing style and tone setup on youtube by next week. The magic would be lost.

Really. The only one who is godlike nowadays is Tim McGraw.

What's not to like about MMJ?   Jim James is the most inventive guitarist I've seen live since Ry Cooder.   I realize their most current offering is a little off, but the last couple of MMJ albums before that have been spot on.   They have the most potential of any band now working.

as long as I'm alive rock and roll ain't dead... and if you can't find younger, newer or just different bands to hip yourself to, you're looking in the wrong places or just looking for the same old thing, either way, dissapointment follows.
There's no doubt, the marketing and whatnot is changed so much, new bands need to sell songs through video games ect to make money.

Nobody touches the Rolling Stones - Yesterday, Today and probably Tomorrow too.  However, I've been digging the Black Keys, thanks to a tip from this stellar board, for five years.  These youngsters from Akron, Ohio -- The Black Keys -- are the real mcccoy.  Their stuff is impossibly good.

Keep Rolling Forward -- Stones For All!!!!

Look out, too, for the Stereoblasters

Yep, someone who gets it. I think high gas prices might severely wound it though since it's harder for bands to travel. And it also died just a little bit on Saturday. But if you like it for what it is, it's just as good as ever. If you need radio, MTV or Ed Sullivan to force feed it to you, then you probably aren't all that much of a fan anyway.

Well said, P!  No one will ever take the Rolling Stones place!  But for me, music is all about now.  When the Stones, Dylan, Springsteen, and the other oldies are gone, I won't be stuck at home with my old vinyls, CD's, DVD's and memorabilia.  I will get my old tired bones out to see the youngsters rockin and rollin. Rock and roll till I drop....

I don't think there will ever be anything remotely close to the Stones.  This this is bigger than all of us. When they tour, it's an event. You plan vacations around it. Parties around it. Summits, for Christ's sake!  They really are an institution.

Since they have been around for so long, they are now a warm and friendly bunch of grandfathers playing some of the greatest music ever known to the planet.

I don't think any other band has managed to capture the magic of the road quite like the Stones, or the fame and fortune side of things.  Mick, Keith, and Charlie have become the archetype for singers, guitarists, and drummers.

They get older. So do we. The music and the meanings continues to come to us in waves. We're all in this together. They need us. We need the Stones.

Very articulate and eloquent, but not necessarily true... The way that music gets passed on from one person to another nowadays was never possible when I was young. My daughter is 14 and , although I don't necessarily like everything that she listens to, there is an awful lot of her music that actually makes me smile, and some that I really like. There are plenty of groups out there that may not necessarily tour around the world, but they certainly have an enormous download-fanbase. My daughter listens to more music than I ever did at her age, and I listened to A LOT, and although it IS the constant background of her life through earphones superglued to her ear canals, she also goes to live gigs of local bands and to other more famous bands when mum finances it. You may argue about the quality of tinny mp3s as opposed to our old vinyls, but the fact is that I would have slipped several discs in my back had I ever attempted to take all my vinyls away over the weekend, whereas she just puts her ipod into her pocket, hey presto!!! Music was never as easily available and ubiquitous as it is now. Downloading is a global phenomenon, it crosses creeds and races and nationalities, and the way music spreads makes touring in our sense almost unnecessary, look at the massive succcess of fairly nice bands like the Arctic Monkeys, and they are bloody good live and also have a massive fanbase....Unfortunately there isn't anything new that will EVER be as good as the Rolling Stones, the question is : would they have become as big had their medium been more electronically based than touring-based??? Somehow I think so, and I believe they would have found a way of making it financially successful. If the music industry is going down the toilet, then I can only say that it was about time, and good riddance! The bastards have been ripping us and the bands off for years and years, and have only their own greed to blame.
