Y'know what?  Fuck history.  With a little fudging, it might have turned out better.  Depends on an earlier recording session for JJF, and the willingness to abandon the prejudice against putting previous singles on LPs.  But history would have thanked them:

THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES' REQUEST

Side 1

Jumpin' Jack Flash
Citadel
In another Land
Child of the Moon
We Love You

Side 2

She's a Rainbow
Dandelion
The Lantern
2000 Light Years from Home
2000 Man

And Charlie would have liked it better.   :areyoufuckingserious

I like TSMR, I agree, the singles around it were great, both right before and right after... so who knows, if they hadn't pushed so hard to keep up with the contemporary garage psych soind, they may have made a much better garage rock album.

Really, if it had just included the single of the time, We Love You/Dandelion, it would have been ten times better. And that's coming from a guy who LOVES the record as it is.

Mickboy did much the same, except for including JJF which came much later.  However, the album was also marred by poor (over) production by the fledgling Glimmer Twins, as the eight-CD Satanic Sessions shows.

Agree, there's a gem of an album in there amidst the murk and the poor choices for inclusion.

That would have made a better album, I agree.  However, it's not bad the way it is.

I love the mellotron!  Brian rocked it out.  Why doesn't anybody use it anymore?  It has a very unique sound.

You're kidding, right?  It's better then ANY Stones album with Ron Wood on it.  Hell, you could make a greatest hits album with the Stones best Ron Wood era material, and Satanic Majesties is still better.  I'm not a Ronnie fan, case you couldn't tell, lol.  He contributed didly squat to the band, compared to Brian and Mick Taylor.

Oy vey! It's better than nothing. I'm not a Ronnie Basher, in case you couldn't tell. Nor am I Brian Basher but TSMR is weak at best.

We'll have to agree to disagree then.  IMO, 2000 Light Years, She's A Rainbow, the Citadel, plus songs from the era not on the album (We Love You, Dandelion) are better then anything the Stones have done since Taylor quit the band...times a million.  IMO.  I'm a big fan of Brians, and like I said earlier in the thread..a big fan of the mellotron.

I like the first 2 songs you mentioned & I agree that the singles that weren't included would have helped quite a bit but that album was made when Brian was going crazy & I think Mick & Keith just humored him. I'll have to ask IanBillen.

Keith said the album "was made under the influence of bail," i.e. they weren't focused and, like I said, were just learning the ropes as producers.  Yes, they made a few bad decisions, but there's good stuff in there.

How can you include JJF when it wasnt even conceived? Dandelion would have fitted perfectly. And We love you would have replaced easily the short verision of "Sing this song all together".

I havent even got this on cd. It's mainly crap, and out dated crap at that. I've toyed with the idea of getting the ABCKO masters, but then again, i've toyed with the idea of homsexuality, suicide and being a right wing conservative too.

Out dated compared to what?  Current music?  I'll take "out dated" 1960's music over the shize they call music these days 101% of the time.

I think there is a great album in there.... I have always loved it..... a better choice of tracks would have done the trick..... for a punchier lineup this is what I have burned and listen too... more of an up vibe to it.... but I only include nine tracks. 'Side 2' would have been complete for me with another spacey number in the third slot. If only the vaults would open...

We love you
Dandelion
Citadel
2000 man
Child of the moon

She's a rainbow
The Lantern
?
Gomper
2000 light years

exotic sounds, intersting modes, great rhythms, well recorded.... I think their brilliance shines through. Brian glows on the mellotron. The dude added some superb touches.

Current music is a mess. I meant what the Stones did later but we've already agreed to disagree on the merits of Mr. Wood.

Hey, whoa. Brian was the one who didn't want to go in the "psychedelic" direction in the first place! He felt it was "not them" and too far from their blues roots. Having said that, though, I think Brian stepped up to the plate and added the instruments/sounds that would make those songs work. I do like the album. It's a different sounding Stones, but Stones none-the-less.

Description says, "Depends on earlier recording date for JJF," which is included b/c of its single status and its earlier-recorded B-side.  It's different from the album style, but could have been followed by Citadel to good effect.

I could have included Gomper, but really I can't decide whether the equally sucky In Another Land shouldn't get preference on historical grounds.

You all have the raw materials - make your own mix and see.  Be sure the volume more-or-less matches on all cuts, or the unity will be lost.

Sieg heil grammer police!   Actually, it's just the initials of my name.  I'd rather my argument be sound anyway.
