NBC’s Tim Russert Dies
By Katharine Q. Seelye

Tim Russert, the host of “Meet the Press,” and NBC’s Washington bureau chief, has died. He was 58.
Mr. Russert was a towering figure in American journalism and moderated several debates during the recent presidential primary season.
Tom Brokaw, the former anchor of NBC Nightly News, came on the air at 3:39 p.m. that Mr. Russert had collapsed and died early this afternoon while at work. He had just returned from Italy with his family.
Mr. Russert hailed from Buffalo and worked for two prominent New York Democrats, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Gov. Mario Cuomo, before being hired in 1984 by NBC in its Washington bureau. He became bureau chief four years later.

We Buffalonians don't have a lot to brag about.
We are known for our Blizzards, our cursed Sports Teams and chicken Wings.

But we are also known as hard working, loyal, big hearted, down to Earth people.

I never met Tim Russert but our backgrounds are very similar. I feel like I have lost a member of my family.

Buffalo is in mourning. :'(

RIP Tim and may God bless your family, especially your Father, whom you honored and loved so dearly.

I am just in shock. What sad news.  :( My husband dropped my daughter off at my work place late this afternoon and told me. I got home in time to see most of NBC Nightly News, and the half hour long tribute to him. Yes, he was young. Very young. Only 2 years older than I am. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and son. I'm so very sorry.  :( :(

I will freely admit that this news was completely devastating to me. As an avid newswatcher and fan of politics, I can say that Russert was really the guy to look up to. The man knew his stuff every single time, and you could tell that he was passionate about what he did. The idea of not having his big, smiling face greet us on election nights or on Sunday mornings is just heartbreaking.

It was a great shock and a true shame to see this man go. I raise a glass, then, to Mr. Timothy Russert, Jr., of South Buffalo. If there's an afterlife, just think of all the people he's going to get to interview now. That's a pretty nice trade-off. Go get 'em, Tim.

I'm from the DC area, and somewhat of a political junkie.   I was shocked when I turned on NBC news at 5pm on 6/13, and the anchors were really upset, and it seemed like someone died.  Then Russert's pics flshed across the screen, and I just went "WHOA".  Completely unexpected.  He was a GREAT Journalist.   His collegues said that he was a very hard worker...a workaholic.   Maybe he just worked himself to death...with the election coverage.

Anyway, he can interview all the politicos in Heaven now.  RIP Mr. Tim Russert and thank you.

This was very sad and shocking to hear. Not just another talking head on tv. But a newsman with integrity who asked the tough questions without making it about him and his starpower like a lot of reporters. A political junkie who loved what he did and died at work. Unfortunately the lifestyle wasn't always the healthiest and yeah it's kind of a wake up call to eat a few less cheeseburgers and start taking better care of myself now.

Consider the source is all I have to say!  ::)

I understand Bruce dedicated "Thunder Road" at last night's show to his number one fan, Tim Russert.

It is astonishing to see the number of lives this man touched. And in a very personal way. But it doesn't really surprise me. Buffalo folk are good people, if I do say so myself.

There is a candlelight vigil tonight in South Buffalo. So damn sad that it's Father's Day and I just keep wondering how Mr Russert Sr is doing.  :'(

There is a real sadness in Buffalo. Heartbreaking.

I just saw Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press say that the Boss dedecated "Thunder Road" to T. Russert last  night.  Apparently, Tim Russert was a Huge Bruce fan, which is very cool.

When I go, I want the Stones to dedicate Factory Girl to me.  Thank you.

A "TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNALIST" -- AND BRUCE FAN -- PASSES ON
I'm still shocked by the news of Tim Russert's death yesterday; as a Sunday morning is about to dawn without the esteemed Meet the Press moderator there to be part of the day, I feel like a word here is in order. Well known to be a huge Springsteen fan (along with his NBC compatriot Brian Williams), Russert told Jon Friedman in a 2007 interview that his "dream 'get'" for an interview was none other than Bruce:

"I'm very intrigued by him," Russert said. "He has a real understanding of the political dialogue, of faith and life in urban America."

Russert already has a connection to "the Boss." "I booked concerts for John Carroll [University] in Cleveland," Russert recalled. "We paid $2,500 to book him on a Tuesday night in February 1974."

Aside from the indelible mental snapshot of seeing a brilliant performer 18 months before he made it big, Russert cherishes the memory for a more practical reason: "I made enough money to pay for my second year of law school."

He said he told Springsteen the story once when he ran into him at a New York City restaurant. Springsteen laughed and said, "That sounds like one of my songs."...

I asked Russert if he had reached out to Springsteen to request an interview. He shook his head, as if he was unworthy of the meeting. It was reassuring to see that even Tim "No Surrender" Russert, the scourge of Washington, could act a little overwhelmed by someone.

Also check out this New York Times blog entry about Bruce's September 2007 Today show performance, when Russert remarked, "I'm just an opening act for the Boss today," and Bruce gave a shout-out to the newsman's haircut.

Russert was married to Maureen Orth, author of the famous 1975 Newsweek cover story on Springsteen, "Making of a Rock Star." Our sympathies are with her and their familiy.

Yesterday, Tom Brokaw called Russert "one of the premiere political analyists and journalists of his time." Walter Cronkite wrote: "a giant in our field -- a standard-bearer of journalistic integrity and ethics." Carl Bernstein: "Tim Russert was a transformative journalist." And yet -- maybe just from knowing how "Born to Run" got his heart pumping, too -- he also felt like one of us. Tim, you'll be missed.

I didn't have time to watch Meet The Press today, but I made time to tune in to the beginning. "Meet the Press, with Tim Russert"....and then they just showed his empty desk and Tom Brokaw started talking about him, off camera. Very sad. That empty desk was still a shock to see, and it really drove home the fact that Tim won't be sitting there anymore. :(

That's it. The Irish temper has blown.
Apology with a condition. Do you believe this guy?

Are you mentally challenged?
Do you have any moral compass whatsoever?
Do you have a fucking clue?

You do not go into a thread dedicated to expressing sadness and condolences for the dead and post inappropriate comments. It's insulting to the deceased and your fellow RO'ers. That is "netiquette 101"

You have a problem with Television Anchors, start a thread about it. Or better yet, considering the amount of posts I have seen where YOU, fireontheplatter, seem on the verge of shooting someone or something, or ready to take on a fellow poster, perhaps ANGER management is seriously warranted.

Just to show that FOTP isn't the only classless tool on the web: "Isn't there any other news to talk about?
Like floods, inflation, iraq, and more.
Don't you think it affects a little more people than a reporter on sunday?

Who cares, thousands of people died over the weekend and who elevated russert to "God" status.
He was an out of shape nantucket conservative, who never dug down to the truth."

That was posted on the page from you tube that MEG linked above.

On another R.I.P. note. Did anybody else notice that besides Russert. Another longtime broadcaster passed away over the weekend. Charlie Jones,a longtime sports announcer. Mostly for NBC I believe. He did NFL football for a longtime as well as olympics coverage. I think he was in his 80's.

Loved the poem Maria Shriver read yesterday at the service.
For those of you that have lost loved ones, as I have, I find it very comforting.
Here it is:

_____________________________________________________________________________________

The Little Ship

I stood watching as the little ship sailed out to sea. The setting sun tinted his white sails with a golden light, and as he disappeared from sight a voice at my side whispered, "He is gone".

But the sea was a narrow one. On the farther shore a little band of friends had gathered to watch and wait in happy expectation. Suddenly they caught sight of the tiny sail and, at the very moment when my companion had whispered, "He is gone" a glad shout went up in joyous welcome, "Here he comes!"
