Title: Keith - Sympathy -- Dallas 89 Post by Mel Belli on Jun 9th, 2008 at 8:27pm
A stark demonstration of how severely Keith has declined over the last 20 years. (No surprise there, when you think about it -- is it possible that Steel Wheels is almost 20 years old?!)

That....wasn't that great....imho
His tone was fantastic, with lots of sustain, but he messed up a lot of the licks (granted he was playing licks that are way faster and more complicated than recent versions). Also sounded like the guitar was out of tune during some parts. I much prefer the solos that are on the Bridges to Babylon DVD and the Twickeham show on Four Flicks. Don't know if they're overdubbed though. The only decent sympathy solo from ABB that I heard was played during Rio. Saitama wasn't bad either, though a bit boring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yGh8yJD_jM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpNoniDH6IY Found the Rio version:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_imQCy7PUl8 |

Yeah, almost 20 years ago now. The arthritis had yet to start and age was on his side. He really owned Sympathy For The Devil on that tour - such a shame that he seemingly struggles so much with the soloing today.
Getting back to the tour itself. Although it was almost two decades ago and the Stones are that much older, things haven't changed. They're set-up is almost exactly the same and as far as the bulk of our criticism goes, this very fact is part of the problem. With things not changing, I think there is the misfortunate tendency for us to view the band in exactly the same way. Perhaps we are not taking into account their age and health as much as perhaps we should be. As time goes on, most adapt - you could argue that Blondie’s increasing role is an example - yet aside from that, things don't change. An entire change is needed. |

I would say that they even sound better now than during 89-90 tour... Too bad Keith is not as good as he was tho.

Thanks - I was at that show. Then I got two hours of sleep and went duck hunting the next morning. That's dedication to multiple hobbies! |
