Title: Some Girls : 30 years ! Post by Jeep on Jun 8th, 2008 at 10:24am June, 9th 1978. Release date of Some Girls album. It was thirty years ago ! My first Rolling Stones LP (just owned some K7 before this purchase). The last "classic" album of the band, as important as Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed or Aftermath. Of course Tattoo You was a classic one, but not really an album, it was like an outtakes best of. |

my 2nd favorite Stones album. So different from Exile, and so good, and by the same band.

Ditto The Stones album that made me a fan. Maybe its sentimental reasons which see it edge Sticky Fingers as my 2nd fave Stones album, but it still holds up brilliantly three decades on. |

great great record for me indeed. i just wish i had the origional record cover because i heard if it is in good shape it could fetch up to 4-5 g's...i used to play this on record over and over and had to buy extra copies. i mush have burned thru 4-5 of these. i think they changed the origional cover shortly afterwards... same art work but with different colors
i still listen to it.....when the whip comes down is a cranker....especially when your speeding down the thruway. :wtf1 |

I've the original and I would doubt that very much, to be honest. Considering the shitloads it sold before they were forced to change it. They didnt change the colours and keep the artwork - the whole point of the change was that some of the featured celebrities demanded that their images be removed or altered. |

the classic rock station here in poughkeepsie had this record collector guy on a few years back and that was what he quoted and this is why i say this. i bet if it had the origional cover and shrink wrap and the little round red sticker on it that reads 6.99, i wouldn't doubt it. |

It's a very good record, but I'm not going to pretend that its one of my absolute favourites. Its their 4th best 70's album, IMO, yet perhaps, the best Ronnie era release alongside the superior Tattoo You.
I don't know what it is really that stops me from fully embracing a record that so many here love so much. I think that perhaps the songs don't quite grab me as they perhaps should. The late 1970's is hardly a favourite music period for me anyway. I own very few records from the end of that decade. |

" The late 1970's is hardly a favourite music period for me anyway. I own very few records from the end of that decade. "
You make Joey very sad . Punk Rock kicked both ' The Rolling Stones ' AND ' The Who ' up the arse and as a result both bands produced some of their finest work in a long time : Some Girls Who Are You " The 1970's are BACK Ronnie !!! " J " Snuggles " Fly ! |

Some Girls is overrated. They're all excellent songs but they just don't work well on the same album. All the songs are just A to D. Boring and repetitive imo. The guitars in the rockers are too thin and weak as well. But it's a whole different story when the songs are played live ;)

The best drum sound on any rock album ever. Great, cohesive LP thematically, absolutely essential to the Stones myth of eternal rebirth and relevance.
I will be more than happy to sell my original for four or five grand if anyone's buying. But more likely you'd just want to go ahead and pick, say, this one up. http://cgi.ebay.com/Rolling-Stones-some-Girls-mint-original-w-girl-pics_W0QQitemZ370052446454QQihZ024QQcategoryZ306QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247 |

Unbelievable that it has been 30 years already.
I might add that these sessions produced some of the best bootlegs/outtakes of their career, IMHO. |

I will 2nd that comment towards the outtakes.
I just completed a review of "Girls, Pills & Powders", a five cd set. This achieves a 5 out of 5 on the Wicked Pissah measurement scale... |

Damn that's hard to believe! 30 years. Where does the time go?! I bought Some Girls the day it came out. I got it at JC Penny. Still have it, and it's in great shape. I too highly doubt the price is in the thousands for an original. It's really not that rare, and I would reckon that an original Sticky Fingers would be a harder find. Or even an original Satanic Majesties. However, I am proud of the fact that I do have an original with all the photos. If memory serves it was Lucille Ball that started raising all the hell and then Farrah Fawcet joined in on the bitching with Jackie O's people chiming in as well.

according to wikipedia : "The cover immediately ran into trouble when Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, and the estates of Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe threatened legal action. It was withdrawn and women's likenesses removed..." I think Jagger said in an interview that one or two of the actresses (ie Raquel Welch) didnt object to being on the cover per se, but objected to the picture that was used! |

"If you can't take a joke then fuck off!", and, paraphrasing here, "It has always been me experience that the line that pisses him off is based on fact. Perhaps my facts, and not his!" Jagger used to really try and be edgy back in those days while trying to out punk the Pistols, etc. Riffy |

Jesse Jackson is such an assclown he must be related to Jacko.I have the original Some Girls too but not worth a lot as there are many around.I do have the original Sticky Fingers with working zipper and the yellow label side one appears on both sides so thats rare as a mis labelled LP I suppose.

A good Some Girls original goes from 10 - 20 bucks, a good Sticky Fingers original goes for between $15 - $20, a good Satanic Majesties stereo original between $40 and $60 and a Beast of Burden PS is about a $2000 record.
Go figure. |

Repetitive? With songs as diverse as Miss You, Far Away Eyes, Shattered and Beast of Burden? I absolutely love the guitar sound on Some Girls. As good as it ever was IMO. Bill also never sounded better (especially on Miss You) and as Nasty says, the best drum sound ever. What does that leave? - Mick? The high watermark of his career as a writer. ..and he sings the shit out of everything in sight. A masterpiece from beginning to end, with the best outtakes of any Stones album and a terrific non-album b-side on "Everything is turning to gold" (one of the most underrated songs theyve ever done). When I'm in Boulogne-Billancourt in two weeks time I shall kiss the ground outside Pathe Marconi Studios. |

Hey Nasty just out of cuiosity. What's the rarest of Stones records as far as collector items are concerned? I'd be curious to know if the Stones ever had a "Butcher" type album cover ala The Beatles. A friend of mine has the Butcher cover in great shape. I had heard that some of those were actually recoverd with the more common version of Yesterday and Today. This one is not a "peeled" version and it's worth some serious coin. Riffy |
|
Title: Re: Some Girls : 30 years ! Post by Nasty Habits on Jun 12th, 2008 at 8:07am
If we're talking US domestic releasage then the Stones' 'Butcher cover' (legendary collectable withdrawn for controversial reasons worth wads of cash) would have to be the US issue of the picture sleeve for Street Fighting Man. In fact, it's much more valuable than the butcher cover (I have been dealt three butcher covers in my career (all peelers), but never even HOPE to see this picture sleeve).
Withdrawn because it was considered too violent and anti-establishment, with only a couple dozen copies, probably taken out of the printers where they were made before they were destroyed known to exist, the last copy that sold on-line, which was not in "mint" shape at all, went for over 15 grand. |
