Title: Fav. Punk Rock Rock Artist/Band.
Post by Heart Of Stone on Jun 6th, 2008 at 2:00pm
No Green Day here, punk from '76/79, The Stooges were the original, along with Lou Reed, they had a thousand bands after that, The Viletones were the big band in Toronto '77, I bought the 1st Pistols album in '76, I already heard The Ramones, so the two bands were very different, I loved it!!! Patti Smith came out with Horses, but she was never a punk rocker, I put her on the list for the time all this happened, only one choice, no guests.

No contest for me

The greatest band to have emerged since the 60's 'golden era'. And they were a state of mind and an attitude every bit as much as they were a band. There's been no one to touch them ever since and sadly, the way rock music has disappeared up its own arse in recent years, there probably never will be.

Patti Smith
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers
The Clash

Three totally different types of music that are all under the "punk" flag.

"Punk" is a tough term to pin down. You can't even confine it to a certain time period. The Velvets were playing in 1969. Then you have The Stooges and The Dolls who were doing something completely different in the early '70s. The kind of music that Patti Smith, Richard Hell, and Television were making in New York starting in 1974 bears little resemblance to what the Sex Pistols were doing in London a couple of years later. The Ramones were an anomaly that turned into an archetype. Everything that came after them was pretty much informed by their look if not their music. After 1978 you got mostly a lot of derivative crap. I've gotta agree with Gazza about the Clash though - they were the last rock and roll band that really were "a state of mind and an attitude as much as they were a band." I'd love for something to come along that's even half as exciting as any of these bands were.

Theyre on the list.

Kings of punk rock? The Pistols may be the most notorious of the bands from that era but they barely lasted 18 months. A great singles band, but little more.

Theyve kinda made  a bit of a joke of their reputation by re-forming.

The pistols kept getting together for a re union, but they never brought out new music, just what was already in their recording!!! The clash kept recording new material, the sex pistols were dead!! The Stooges were the original, along with the MC5, (If you were brought up in Detroit) also The Original Alice Cooper band was a punk band, (before cooper got into the make-up)  I think a lot of respect should be made to The Stooges (they were the original)

MC5, Dictators, Patti Smith, Misfits, Motorhead, The Stranglers, Wire...
All different bands, all differnet styles, all punk as fuck IMO! And I just named a few off the top of my head. Good thing we stop at 79, b/c by 1980 I could throw ten or twenty more without a really thinking.
And I think my opinion goes far, b/c I'm punk as fuck...

HOW DARE YOU post a "Top Ten Punk Bands of All Time" poll and not include the realist, rawest, most reckless and number one punk band of all time.

THE DEAD BOYS!

The Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones etc. etc. were nothing more than "show" bands compared to THE DEAD BOYS baby!

Pdog you are supposed to be this Punk Fanatic and you forgot them. You should be ashamed.

I would normally be ashamed, but I own just about everything Stiv has done and I own RFTT's stuff too... I am moving out of CA with my wife and kids, so I'm not really thinking clearly. 30 minutes ago I was packing up stuff, including my speakers and stereo stuff.

Thank God I found the Buffalo Underground..where people understood.

Had to vote for The Velvet Underground. Velvet Underground And Nico pisses over anything released by the other artists on that list IMO.

I have to be honest, punk, as a genre, has never really grabbed me. I DO like The Clash, but they were so much more to them. Punk is more than music, its fashion and a way of life.

I think so too, in a way. Very early punk. Honestly, the first "punk" record for me was "You Really Got Me". I was probably almost 12....and I heard that song.....and I had to have it NOW! So, that night, I had my Mom drive me to the local Woolworth's, with my 95 cents in hand, and brought that baby home. I'd just never heard anything like it. And now, looking back, I think it was punk. ;)

I'm not a huge punk fan either. I have some stuff---Clash, Ramones, Velvet Underground...but not a lot. Good poll, though.  :)

Great band. "Young, Loud and Snotty" is one of my all-time favorite albums. Great LIVE band too.

Yes I cannot agree (or stress) enough how excellent the album "Young, Loud, and Snotty" is. It is placed in my top 10 albums of all time.

You want real punk from a real punk band, not a band pretending to be "punk"? Do you want a real Rawness...?

Pick up "Young, Loud and Snotty". You have not heard real punk until you have heard that album. If you have not heard THE DEAD BOYS then all you have heard were imposter's or kids pretending.

I cant say im surprised by the clash being no.1 so far, but the best band in the world ever (better than the stones) are

The Stooges

absolutely the best band ever, i cant even tell you how good they are, progenitors of like 30 different genres of music and were the greatest punk band ever, greatest jazz fusion band ever, greatest rock n roll band ever - just pure greatest badn ever

tho i cant figure out -
Whats so good about the clash?

(personally, i think they are probably one of the worst bands ever, honestly, strummer was just bandwagon jumper like siouxie - just thought oh this looks like itll pick up soon ill latch onto this)

- so explain why they are no.1 on this list that includes stooges and the dolls?!

My fav. punk bands are Ramones, Clash & their little baby called Rancid. In that order... The Stones our and will always be my number one.
I'm just glad two of these four are still touring, and hopefully the next Rancid album will be better than the last Stones record... I'm looking forward to hearing a song called Darlene, that is all about The Fox News whorecasters.

It's the Clash in a walk for me. If for no other reason than Guns Of Brixton, Right Profile, White Riot, Jimmy Jazz, and on, and on, and on...... There was a time when they really were the only band that mattered. I got a chance to interview Joe Strummer just a few months before he died. He was a real gent. That was a major loss. Mick Jones was in the studio a few weeks ago pumping his latest effort. The guy reaked of some very fine bud. Though I must say that he looks like an old English butler these days.
