Title: Will Iggy Pop Ever Tour again?....from Ian Post by Ian Billen on May 29th, 2008 at 5:17am I was wondering who here saw Iggy Pop on his last tour with The Stooges and as well how they were. I read they were really good. I am a big Iggy Pop fan and I regret not ever getting the chance to see him. What do you feel the odds are of him/them touring again. I am assuming he will (hopefully with the stooges). BTW: Avenue B is a true gift. What a unique, personal, well produced album. Ian |

Ian,
Iggy (& Stooges) are playing the Virgin Festival this year. I'm not going because I don't like the festival format...I've no interest in seeing other crap that participates. Yes, Avenue B is a gem indeed. :keithpunky |

I saw the Stooges last tour and reviewed it here. Others did also. I'm sure the reviews are in the archives.

Thanks! And I love the name. I know it has something to do with a street or address concerning The Stones but what is the exact significance of "Edith Grove"? By the way, I wish I was in Europe this summer. I would go see them. Ian |

________________________ Avenue B is indeed a precious gift. Produced by Don Was as well (current Stones producer). If you like his work I very STRONGLY suggest checking out The Black Crowes Lions album. It is nothing short of excellent. Very powerful Zepplin-esk guitars. Beatles like song writing towards the end. Gems of Southern Harmony style tunes here and again. Thick, very powerful production. *Also the mixing on a few numbers such as "Losing My Mind" is nothing short of spectacular. ...and I am not even a Black Crowes Fan really. Well, I do think the stuff I hear from War Paint sounds decent. However, I was never a fan of anything before Lions. I am still no Black Crowes "fan" but I think the LIONS album is really good and the production on it is fantastic. Ian |

I helped catch Iggy @ Stooges in Sf as he dove off the stage...
I have a pic of it, my arm is the most tan arm, with a barely visible German Eagle on it... |

________________________________ I see it. Well Pdog For the first time in our long and torrential relationship I actually envy you. Who took that pic? I would simply die (and no I am not gay lol) to be able to say that I caught Iggy in one of his famous stage dives. Iggy is a King. He is as cool, well almost as cool, and as "authentically real" as Keith but in a different way entirely. And by the way, have you heard Lions? (by The Black Crowes). I did not care for them too much entirely before I heard Lions. Too much of a generic sounding Faces/Stones gig for my taste (but not as good) but Lions blows my socks off. Ian |

I know it was from a track that was also on High Tide and Green Grass. I think it was either that song or Play With Fire? I forget. I kinda believe it was Time Is On My Side but I'm not sure. Also I am not sure of why they credited the song as such? Was it due to this guy named James Pheldge I am supposing? I thought the credit was done as more-over a joke? Can you fill me in someone? Ian[/quote] There are others that know much more than I, but here's what I believe to be true: A "Nanker" was a repulsive face that Jones/Richards used to pull in the early days and Phelge was, of course, their roommate. "Nanker Phelge" was a pseudonym used to credit a group effort in songwriting. Time Is On My Side was credited to Norman Meade, which was, it seems, a pseudonym for Jerry Ragovoy. TIOMS was also released a month or two before the Stones version by this young lady: I don't know the exact dates that Jones/Jagger/Richards lived at Edith Grove, but I believe it to be around the time leading up to, or including the first album. BTW, this is almost a Nanker: :hilarious If anyone has a good pic of real Nanker by one of the boys, I'd love to see it. |

You got it right, Edith Grove. Brian, Mick, Keith, and Jimmy Phelge lived at 102 Edith Grove from '62-'63. It was the coldest winter in London in 100 years. The flat was horrid---dirty, cold {they had to feed the heat "meter" with coins, when they had them, to get any heat at all}. There was a communal bathroom--shared by other tenants. Mick was still in school, at the London School of Economics. Brian couldn't keep a job for long, and Keith didn't even try to work. They lived off a small stipend Mick got through the school, and the occasional food that Keith's mum sent them. They would steal potatoes from the grocers, and milk from the front doors of the other renters. Brian said he would never eat a potato again, after they finally got a bit of fame and fortune! It was at this time that Brian and Keith spent all day under the covers, perfecting their "ancient art of weaving"....they would often play guitars until their fingers bled. Phelge was a lovable, but disgusting guy. lol He would put his dirty underpants on his head and greet visitors at the top of the stairs. They would all cough up gobs of phelgm and spit it on the walls, often naming their "creations". When the dished got dirty, instead of washing them, they would just throw them out the window! {it was a first floor flat, which is the second floor of the building}. Their bedsheets were filthy. It was a long, cold, hard winter. The Beatles actually visited the boys at Edith Grove one night---after they had come down from Liverpool to see a club gig.
One of the best Stones books I've read is the one by James Phelge, "Nankering with the Rolling Stones". It is a great read! I highly recommend it....:) By the way, Brian was the one who came up with the Nanker Phelge name for crediting the entire band with a composition. Yes, a nanker is an ugly face, usually involving fingers pulling at the skin around the eyes and the nostrils. And the Phelge is in hommage of Jimmy Phelge... |

Title: Re: Will Iggy Pop Ever Tour again?....from Ian Post by Gazza on Jun 3rd, 2008 at 7:04pm
its quite a respectable area, even though the flats do look like theyve seen better days. Any property in Chelsea doesnt come cheap!
I couldnt remember which number it was and was wandering around when a local builder saw our Stones t-shirts, instantly knew what we were looking for and said "its that one - number 102"! Oddly enough, the Edith Grove flat is little more than a b-stage stroll away from the more luxurious townhouses that Mick and Keith would buy in Cheyne Walk barely six years later. |

I have BC "Lions" somewhere. I'll try to find it. Do you have it? I like BC ok, but not a huge fan. Btw, I don't like the down-hill slide of Kate Moss since she left Chris R. FG! |

I suppose the Unholy Trinity is Omnipresent and cannot under any circumstances technically hijack a thread, or even be told off in the unlikely event of doing so ????? ;) ;) ;)
Ian, back to your question: I don't know when Iggy Pop will tour again, but I caught him on the Isle of Wight Festival two weekends ago, and I honestly don't think he should. I'll give him my thumbs-up any day for stamina, energy and sweat-gland power, and I'm sure he's a nice man, but the music was shit, I'd rather see Gazza's favourite artist, Jon Bon Jovi.... :blankfriggingstare1 |

___________________________________ DO I HAVE THE BLACK CROWES LIONS ???...!!!!!!! Have it, I ADORE it. The production is amazing. If you want a thick, Zepplin-esk, meaty, powerful guitar sound, with Beatle-esk songwriting towards the end of the album, mixed with a few good Black Crowes Southern Style Rock tunes .... You have come to the right place=LIONS By the way... It may just be my favorite "sounding" album of all time from a recording/production standpoint. Also by the way.... I was never, a Black Crowes, Beatles, or Led Zepplin real Fan. They were all alright in my book and each has material I like well enough but I was never crazy over any of them. But Don Was took the best of these three bands and brought it out of The Black Crowes on the LIONS CD. I still listen to it about once a week or maybe every few weeks because of the quality of the recording/production. The mixing by Chris Lord-Alge on "Losing My Mind" is superb. The Production by Don Was is simply fantastic. The songs are pretty good as well. Most are good enough tunes with a few pretty darn good ones in terms of songwriting. I am not nuts over the Black Crowes earlier works. It was too generic of a Stones/Faces mix yet wasn't totally authentic, or as good. However Don Was pulled a sound out of The Crowes I did not think was possible. Great Album. Ian |
