Title: How much do you pay for...............
Post by cabledogg2 on May 3rd, 2008 at 4:29pm
With all the talk about the U.S. economy tanking and gas / food / electric / etc prices on the increase i was wondering? How much are ROers outside the states paying for Gas , Milk , Electricity.....etc. Are we americans just a bunch of whiners? I live outside of Wash D.C. and gas in my area for low grade is $3.71 a gallon , a gallon of milk is $3.69 , it costs me roughly $220.00 a month to power and heat/cool my home. Cable tv/ phone/  high speed internet run me about $120.00 a month...What say you? As Bill Oreilly would say................

I live in Paris,
A gallon of gas is 8.12 USD
A liter of milk is 1.40 USD
I pay 46 USD for HS Internet with TV channels
A Big Mac is 5.4 USD
And my ticket to see SAL cost me 15 USD...

it only makes sense if people also post how much money they make...

i think americans pay almost the same for stuff as we here in europe. (with the expention of gas & carprices )

of course when we go to the states now, everything is cheap for us, but that's only because the euro is so strong

but ANY european will tell you that 4 bucks for a gallon is dirt cheap....

In northern Norway, where I come from: about 10 dollars for a gallon of gasoline
A bottle of booze... about 70 dollars, milk....no idea.

If it's any comfort, I paid more than $17 to see Shine A Light at the IMAX theater. As far as prices, egon is correct; it matters just as much how much one earns. The price of gasoline has NO effect on my life except that it annoys me.

Everything costs more here where I live in the U.S. I pay more for a gallon of milk than I do my gas, but my kids seem to get better mileage off it than my cars does the gasoline!!!

Now there's a man who has his priorities straight!
I can't even afford to buy weed where I live. Last time I checked, it was $200 for a quarter of an ounce (and that's with the family discount)!

Gasoline prices are ridiculous though. I just got a car this year after being without one for about 5 years, and the first time I had it filled up I brought $20 with me - boy, was I in for a shock.

To answer your question: Yes, you are a bunch of American whiners!

Gasoline is at £1.10 per LITRE in the Uk, and a gallon fits 4.something of those, now swallow that!

Now, concentrating on really important issues, that price for weed is outrageous, GTRM, I think you ought to do something about that! A demonstration in front of the White House while George Bush is sleeping his siesta seems in order...

Now I wonder how that inflated weed price  compares to the price of medical grade weed sold in those dispensing machines in California. Does anyone know???

Never mind the USA being the first country to take man to the moon,or to invent chewing gum and Saddam's weapons of mass destruction, I really think that a machine that dispenses weed 24 hours a day is the best invention EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go, USA, go!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :willya

why don't people grow their own weed. I grew a plant about 9 or 10 years ago. i used a pile of seeds a roomante had in a dish, dropped by the side of our rented house, and trimmed the plants once a week. 4 months later my roomate was blown away, and had enough free weed to last like 2 or 3 months. and i don't even smoke weed anymore!!!

Smoking.... 90 dollars a week - that's one pack a day. But paying a high price for gasoline, alcohol and tobacco is nothing to complain about - as medical care is very inexpensive.  And if you're unable to work because of damages, you'll get a good lump of money to make up for it. It would be silly to smoke cigarettes if it wasn't for this.

Food, clothing, and fuel have all rocketed in price, here.

The PM was given a strong message by the electorate, last thursday.
He'll be booted out in 2 years, if the situation doesn't, dramatically, improve.

Petrol in the UK has just topped £5 a gallon for the first time, I believe...so thats about $10.

I think our quarterly electric bill is about £120. Broadband internet is about £80 per quarter and the home phone bill is about £17 a month. Satellite TV can be anything up to about £45 a month, depending on whether you get the movie and sports channels. The TV licence, which is compulsory if you own a TV set, is about £140 a year. Then we have other household taxes like rates/council tax, depending on where you live, the amount of which depends on the size of your home. This is several hundred pounds a year at least

Wages are generally a bit behind what theyd be in the US so I reckon you guys arent doing too badly.

after only being subject to relatively mild inflation for decades the price of petrol here has increased over 50% in the 7 years since 9/11 and is now approx $5.50  a US gallon

presently an AUS$ is worth at least 95 cents US and i think they even hit parity a little while ago - by comparison in '98 when i went to NYC  i was only getting 55 to 60 cents US for the AU$1.00

a bottle  of Jack Daniels here will set you back about AU$40 - Johnny Walker Red about $30.00

apparently, due to a virtual duopoly in the  grocery chain store market here, australian beef is cheaper in california than it is here!!

an ounce of grass $200.00 - $250.00 (south australian prices)

20 cigarettes $10.00 - $12.00

Bear in mind the Aussie dollar is more or less equal to the Yank, and he we go...

Top cable package is $110.00 a month. I just ditched some of it as i hardly watch it. Now i pay $65.00 a month

A "pot" (375ml) of beer is $3.00 at my club. Egon has been there!!!! It's usually $3.30 every where else.

A Big Mac meal deal is around $6.25 for the large.

I get illegal tobacco (IE: Tax free) but i think a packet of 25 ciggies is around$10-11.00.

I'm flying to Queensland next month and that cost me $206.00

My mobile phone is $40.00 a month with $300 worth of calls.

Gas/elec cost me about $400.00 a month combined. Cant recall how much water is.

My broadband is $55.00 a month, which is a fucking rip-off. I'm changining providers soon. Only a saving of $6.00, but the limit is more than double!

Petrol is currently $1.35 a litre

Daily paper is $1.10.

Milk is $3.50 for 3 litres.

Picture magazine, the worlds finest gentlemen's weekly, is $4.25. Thats a good price for tits and shaven pussies (or as Picture calls them "Smoo") and to see all the lovely Aussie housewives in the Home Girls section

Lets see prices in US$:

rent $250 a month (nice sized 2 bedroom apt.)
Gas $25 a month
Electric $20 a month
Water $5 a month
Internet $80 a month
Cell Phone about $1 a day
Bus and Trolley either $60 a Month or $5 a day
Cigarettes $2 a pack
Food $3-7 a day (i don't cook so thats restaurants, usually shrimp breakfast and steak dinner)
Gummi Bears $50 month approx

Total for month about $700

I have to work about 6 days a month, Come to think of it maybe I should raise my rates. If I charged what others do, I could knock that down to 3 1/2 or 4 days a month

Water $5 a month
Internet $80 a month
Cell Phone about $1 a day
Bus and Trolley either $60 a Month or $5 a day
Cigarettes $2 a pack
Food $3-7 a day (i don't cook so thats restaurants, usually shrimp breakfast and steak dinner)
Gummi Bears $50 month approx

Total for month about $700

I have to work about 6 days a month, Come to think of it maybe I should raise my rates. If I charged what others do, I could knock that down to 3 1/2 or 4 days a month

That's it then. I'm moving to wherever YOU live.

Holy shit... no kidding. Our monthly in SF is about $5k, for a family of four. Rent, groceries, energy....

Wages are generally a bit behind what theyd be in the US so I reckon you guys arent doing too badly.

are you saying one must pay 2-3 hundred bucks a year just to have a tv?  thats insane.  why?

The BBC doesnt allow advertising, so its funded by a licence fee. The anomaly is that whilst there are 5 'terrestrial' TV stations in the UK and the two BBC channels (BBC1 and BBC2) are the only commercial free ones (their radio stations are commercial free too as are their satellite TV stations), you still have to buy a licence fee for a TV. Its not like you can argue that a) you only watch satellite TV or b) you dont watch the BBC channels. The other three terrestrial Tv channels - ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are all funded by advertising.

Satellite TV, under the Sky package, is funded by advertising and subscription.

We're leaving here... So we can actually live like our income. It's so insane!!! The thing is, even if we made more money and could live like the people making really good high 6 or low 7 digits, they're assholes!!! I don't even want to be around them... I left SF for that reason 10-12 years ago. came down to SD and the only thing really better was the weather. People pretty much suck.  after a few years I started walking across the boarder and spending time in Tijuana. Great blue collar town, great people, great food, BEAUTIFUL women, what more could you want?

Netherlands, averages all converted to US$ and volumes (american gallon is 3.8 liter):

- gasoline $9.30 /gallon (that's why most of us here don't drive those a-social SUV's  ;D)
- elec/gas/water: $290 /month
- milk $4.35 /gallon
- cable/dsl about $60 (but slowest speeds starting from $30 and fastest about $90), although I have fiber with tv/radio, telephone and internet (50Mbit up and down) for $77 one package
- cigarets $6.30 a pack on average but rising
- health insurance (mandatory by law) $140 to start with the lowest basic package and up to $70 added for additional care insurance (teeth etc) /month

- average income: 33K$ /year I think not sure

- complete smoking ban for bars/restaurants/coffe shops (following years earlier bans in work places, hospitals and public buildings): will be in place from July 1st, 2008...

No. We have a national health system which, in theory at least, takes care of that. Horrendously overstretched and underresourced however, so some people elect to have 'private' medical treatment to avoid the waiting lists for certain treatments.

National Insurance contributions in the UK are usually around 9% of your salary

I have no major gripes with our NHS. However, it has its limitations and there are certain things I'd rather go private for, IE, the operations and procedures in which you'd wait a life time for otherwise.

I've been to private clinics a few times over the years. A different experience completely.

the other day i went into burger king and to wash my meal down with i asked for a cup of water [no ice no lid no straw, just a cup of water] and the girl charged me 25 cents.  this was not a cup like the small/medium or large ones that come with the value meals, it was one that holds about 6-7 ounces of liquid.  i knew i was paying fur the cup, but i always thought water was free.
also in my town
burger king and mcdonalds are now charging for those little sauce packets that used to be free.  micky d ones are 15 cents and bk ones are 25 cents.  when i order a 4 piece nugget i get one for free, but i like to have 2 ranch sauces...1 for every 2 nuggets.  it doesn't seem right for a restaurant to charge for condiments.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm.......anyone hungry?

I pay about .5% of my salary for health insurance. The US has become a nation of whiners lately. Yes, I too get pissed about delays but there's no better system anywhere.

as long as your healthy, that is all you pay. BUT!!! if you take meds, you pay co-pays, and not all drugs are covered, and then there's all other ways you pay. It's not like insurance in the USA means full coverage.

About a year ago i had a cervical spinal fusion in my neck........the bill came to $26,000 after all was said and done. My cost $100.00 so i feel lucky that i have decent medical insurance as many people in the states don't.

wow!!!  that sounds pretty serious.  if you don't mind me asking....what happened?

I had a compressed/ herniated disc causing moderate pain in my neck and my arm to be numb all the time. The good news is the surgery was a success.........
