Title: Fav. Bassist of 60's/70's.
Post by Heart Of Stone on Apr 20th, 2008 at 11:52am
Well, I wrote down all the names that people wanted, but I only got 30 options to choose, so if I left some names out, that's as far as I could go, but that's enough, I'm glad it's only the 60's & 70's, because the sky is the limit any other way, here is the poll, people have more then 1 option to vote.

Wow. Lovely to see them all written down. And I know it's not an exhaustive list, either. But, I still went with Entwistle. And since there's not a bass player emoticon, here's  :keithpunky!!!

has to be The Ox - nobody comes close, in my book.
He is sorely missed.

NOTE: Chic Corea and Al di Meola are not bass players, they are keyboardist and guitarist respectively

That list is a bit too 'rawk' and white orientated.

Cant see how any list of legendary bass players can omit Donald "Duck" Dunn of Booker T & The MG's and ESPECIALLY the great James Jamerson, Jr., who played on most of the classic Motown hits from that era.

Or, some of the great late 70's players like Paul Simonon...

Donald "Duck" Dunn was mentioned in the other thread...didn't realize he'd been left out of the poll. Too bad there was a limit on the number of entries!  :(

As of this point Bill is edging out the Ox. Which surprises me....a little. But then again I guess it shouldn't.

Yeah - I was just about to post the exact same thing.  I would have trouble picking between either of those two, but they top everyone on this list.

And where's Brian freakin' Wilson?

Bill Wyman was great for what he did and was a perfect fit for The Rolling Stones, but to me Entwistle was more exciting.

I certainly had them on the list, but it's only 30 options, James Jamerson is indeed a fantastic Bass player, when I think of all those Motown classics, his playing was out of this world! how about somebody doing a poll for drummers?

And bass is the one instrument I've always wanted to play. I am more blown away by a good bass line than I am a searing lead solo {unless it's Hendrix :P}

Since I could actually put down more than one choice, I went ahead with my top 3 - Entwistle, Wyman, and Lesh.

Now THAT'S bass playin', Ronnie!

I had to go for McCartney. Listen to his playing on Revolver and you'll hear why.

I'll add Tommy Cogbill to that list. This might be the most prolific, unknown bassist of the rock era...
All of Aretha's Muscle Shoals stuff (Never Loved a Man, Respect, Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Since You've been Gone,  Baby I love You and all the others..)
Wilson Pickett: Funky Broadway (one of best, funkiest bass lines ever), Land of the Thousand Dances, Mustag Sally etc..
Elvis (Kentucky Rain, SUspicious Minds etc)
Dusty Springfield's Son of a Preacher Man.....and more...
He was low-key guy, quiet, humble, a southern gentlement from Memphis....unfortunately he died in 80....

Samply cut: This is just some kid playing along with the record, but he highlights the bass line....

Very true, Gazza, but how many have actually heard of these musicians? If you're just going to go down the populist route, then I think the list is reasonably fair, IMO.
