Television Guest Appearances - Live Performances

The purpose of this page is to document "live" guest appearances by The Rolling Stones on television shows

It may be a surprise to some to see how few there actually are, which is mainly because many TV appearances in the 1960's featured the band miming to a playback recording...as a result, I have not listed appearances without any "live" performance of any kind, which explains the non-inclusion of most appearances on shows such as "Thank Your Lucky Stars", "Top Of The Pops", "Shindig" etc.

It is quite difficult to find tapes of many early TV shows to try and discern between "live" and "mimed" performances, but I have listed only the shows where I am pretty certain they did NOT mime.

In fact, some of the appearances documented here are not completely "live" either, as in many cases the performance featured only a live vocal performed over a pre-recorded backing track (for example, many appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show")

Latter day performances are easier to track down as the Stones have only made a guest performance on one "regular" TV show since 1971,namely NBC's "Saturday Night Live" in 1978 - any other performances since then have been on awards shows, usually in the form of satellite feeds taken from a Rolling Stones concert

I have not listed shows where the performance has not been "live" in front of an audience of sorts such as "Don Kirshners Rock Concert" (US TV 1973 and 1974), even if the vocals have sometimes been "live", because these segments have featured promotional videos as opposed to an "in person" guest appearance. Nor have I listed features on shows such as "Old Grey Whistle Test" (1972), "Good Night America" (1975) etc which featured footage of the band in rehearsal for a tour

The contents should be self-explanatory - however, just to clarify, they are listed thus:

Broadcast date - ie, the INITIAL broadcast date only, not taken into account the countless reruns and /or video repackaging of these performances.

Programme Title - Original broadcast only, not re-broadcasts in different shows under other titles.

Channel - Again, this refers only to the TV station, which originally broadcast the performance.

Country - Country of origin of broadcast, taking into account that in recent years, satellite television has broadcast shows live worldwide.

Songs performed - Setlists of the TV program.

Tape Extant - Whether a video recording of the performance is known to be in circulation amongst collectors (or if no video recording is circulating, if it is available as an audio recording).

Notes - Any additional notes on the performance, in particular if the show was recorded on a different date than it was broadcast.

but the circulating version comes from a rebroadcast shown on ‘Hits A Go Go’ on Swiss TV on 24.9.69 and circulated in 2018.

It is also possible that the circulating performance may come from the July broadcasts (see above) although I do recall reading

in this video footage.
