I don't believe there is any live streaming. We already got spoiled from the White House gig being streamed live. A couple of people on IORR are going. So we'll have to wait for eyewitness reports.Tweets? Whatever we can get.

There's no broadcast or streaming.

Hopefully the fact that Mick has been in NYC for the last couple of days is of some significance....

Following Blue Lena and miraklwkr (Tamara and Lynn) on Facebook.
Keef has yet to take the stage. It has been an amazing evening thus far.
Many, if not most, of those Artists at the DC event are here.
Where's Mick is MY question.
A tad disappointed it appears he is not there.

I'll update when I can....................

What a puzzling shambles of an appearance.

Will I pay some inordinate amount of money to watch Keith lean on a piano and occasionally croon-speak unintelligibly?

Probably, yes. Smiley

I'm not trying to throw cold water on everyone's excitement this year. I'm just being realistic. Just look at Clapton; the contrast could not be starker. I'm not saying Keith was ever the player that Eric was; I'm just saying that you don't look at Eric now and Eric 25 years ago and see the marked erosion that we see in Keith.

It seems to me that, for today's Keith, the very effort of standing and playing guitar is like pushing a boulder up a hill.

I'm not looking to rain on anyone's parade.
I'm glad folks are enjoying what they are seeing with Keith's performances.
From the videos which I've viewed, it would seem he has a way to go to get into tour shape.
Compare this to Jagger the other night, who, while somewhat winded in his 1st song and may have well been ill, recovered
terrifically to give a great performance.  Compare what has been viewed to date last night of Keith to Jeff Beck's performance the other night.
Or for that matter Buddy Guy from the other night. Or, as noted here Clapton's performance, even Ronnie's tour last year with The Faces.
These are all Keith's peers, well Guy is older, which says alot.  Keith, barely playing guitar, is not ready for any worldwide swing.
Maybe Keith's happy with this.
Just my two cents.
I'm ready to take my beating.

great to see even though it's shakey as hell, I kept looking at the tuning pegs on his guitar & being so shakey it looked like 6 pegs on each side, that would make it 12, but can't be?

Minimally competent. Open-tuned guitar, slide to frets 5 and 7. Paint-by-numbers blues.

Look, I've said for years it would fascinating if Keith became a Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits-type vernacular musician who explores anew country and blues and Americana. Add something like that to the literary bon vivant he has become, and you'd have a vitally interesting late-period Keith.

But that's not what he's going to be asked to do this year. He's going to have to play Rolling Stones music this year, when everything in his bones (quite literally!) is telling him he can't anymore.

Yes, I can see what you mean, Clapton has looked after himself, he's been sober for 20 some years I believe & he's never stopped playing,   Keith just doesn't look after himself, the only thing that makes a musician good is practice!

Oh, things will be alright for the last big go-round.  How could they be any worse than what I witnessed in 2006??  At least Ronnie will be sober this time.  Man, I have boots from '06, video too, and quite often they make me grimace cus of what the guitar players are doing..or not doing...often they are just absent!
But it does seem like mick & Keith are not on the same page.  Micks talkin bout an energetic performance/spectacle,  and Keith is content to sit on a stool and doodle and croon.  I'd like some of both please.

HATE TO RAIN ON STEEL WHEELS ENTHUSIASM,BUT THERE WAS NOTHING IN THAT PERFORMANCE TO GET AMPED ABOUT.

Worse than 06? Ouch.  Do ya think they would bring onstage a competent guitarist to cover for Keith this tour?  Most concert goers will be happy to just see Keith on stage with the Stones, and aren't really clued in to what he is playing or not playing.

sorry....but that would blow away 50 years of credibility...or what is left of it...I think we now know why there is no tour announcement....Mick is not going to take to the road when Keith can,t play anymore....And he has too much class to say it regardless of Keith;s book shots.....

I always thought the playing on Shine A Light sucked and that was six years ago.  Elderly people rarely or ever get better at anything, so? But that's the world we live in just be realistic. Everything ends. Nobody's fault. My mom has had horrible arthritis for years she never smoked or drank.  It just happens to some people. I for one would rather the stones never play live again then see Keith not being able to play. He will always be my favorite musician but from what I have read and seen from last night it looks over.  With that said I still do believe he can write and make a record.  Hope so.

What's the attraction to wearing a captain's hat?
Johnny Johnson did, Chuck Berry wears one to this day.
This sax player with Keith, sorry for I do not know his name.
It's like he just came off his shift throwing tow rope from the ferry from NJ & happened to bring his sax.
I don't get it.

Guess I should "weigh in"

I am in the Mel camp I am afraid.  Little Red Rooster was OK, but I couldn't even finish watching the other performances. It was way too painful.

I really have no desire to see a "Stones Spectacle"- especially if one of them is gonna prance around like a Rooster in drag and the other is gonna just sit and lay eggs.  I'd rather have my memories of greatness.

This is sadly spot-on.

Maybe it's the excitement for some of the fact that they're seeing him perform again, but I don't see anything in this to enthuse about.  It's not horrendous, but it's barely functional and it's pretty evident that it's other musicians (in this case Clapton) who are taking the strain musically. And it's only blues - it's not exactly challenging stuff.  Of course, a tour could be many months away yet, but is it beyond the point of no return?

If they go on tour and early reviews are scathing, will people still flock to buy expensive tickets in the droves they expect them to?

I'm pretty surprised no one seems to have commented on Mick's non appearance. I know he wasn't billed (and maybe its as well as THAT would have become the 'story' of the event when it was meant to be Hubert's night) but it was still very disappointing, considering he was in the same city at the time and it would appear that apart from Obama and the frail BB King, he was about the only performer from the White house gig who wasn't at the Apollo.

Howlin' For Hubert
The Apollo Theater
NY, NY
Febraury 24, 2012

This was a benefit show for the Jazz Foundation of America, which helps impoverished musicians (not just jazz musicians) pay the bills for their basic necessities. It was to have been a celebration of Hubert's 80th birthday, but since he passed away, it became a memorial show.

I have never experienced such a stunning array of talent displayed at a single show. I have tried my best with the track titles and artists on stage, but given the changes and number of artists, it was quite a chore- any corrections would be appreciated. There was a video played at the beginning of the show, but since I do not know its source and whether any of the music played was commercially released, I just left the last 30 or so seconds, per the suggestions of the mods. There were no cameras present to indicate a DVD was shot. A CD release would be very difficult, given the contracts of all the various artists, so enjoy it in its glory.

Hats off the the 1500 seat Apollo Theater in Harlem. The venue did the show full justice.

A few notes about the show:
The guitar player with the pony tail also appearing at the white house gig was Derek Trucks,
the woman is his wife, Susan Tedeschi.

The sax player in the captain's hat is Eddie Shaw.

Other notable no shows were Dr. John and Paul Rodgers.

BB King had a gig in OK Thursday night and TX Saturday, so he wasn't going to make it.

If Mick would have showed, it would have turned into a mini-sideshow.
After all this WAS about Hubert Sumlin, not The Rolling Stones and their "current state".

If they give us a few shows, I'll proudly go to show my support and give them the applause they deserve
for all they have given to me. I'll never be embarrassed by the "prancing Rooster in drag and/or his egg laying ax man"

I enjoyed his vocal on 'Spoonful'.

I noticed that - like the last tour post-Fiji - he didn't seem to be playing much guitar when singing, though.

As Bill says, 'any attempt to brush off the cobwebs is a step in the right direction', although it shouldn't have taken this long.

Hopefully he'll keep his hand in with a few more appearances in the next few months before he does it for real.

It appears I am in the minority when it comes to the Little Red Rooster performance. I really like it a lot. It sounds like a good slow blues. All across the internet people are saying basically the same thing-that Keith is a shell and the end of the band is near.

I disagree.

Reading these boards filled with negativity is nothing new. No matter what board I join, no matter the topic (cars, home theater, movies, radio, etc.) , thing usually end up negative. The car I enjoy, the movie I like, the radio station I listen to-most people disagree with me.  My lesson learned is I will spend more time listening to music than reading about it on a computer screen.

It almost might be better at this point to have keith and Mick do seperate solo tours. Keith can imbarce his inner crooner and get a decent guitar playe aka Waddy Wachtel to help him out and an MJ Jeff Beck tour playing the blues would be great....At least it sounds good after a couple of beers tonight. Let's go get drunk Have you no fucking shame?

The contrast in performances this week from Mick @ the WH & Keith @ The Apollo are just stunning.

Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and More Celebrate Hubert Sumlin in New York
'It's good to be back,' Richards told crowd. 'It doesn't get any better than this.'

Matt Kent/Kevin Mazur/WireImage

By PATRICK DOYLE
February 25, 2012 8:05 PM ET

Close to midnight last night at New York's Apollo Theater, Eric Clapton had just finished a thunderous take on classic blues number "Forty Four" when Keith Richards ambled onstage with no introduction. Wearing a dark blazer, long green scarf, fedora and a huge grin, he embraced Clapton and stood center stage to massive applause, delivering a smoky take on Wolf’s "Going Down Slow," a chronicle of a frail man who has savored life’s greatest pleasures. "Man, I've had things that kings and queens will never have," Richards growled. "In fact, they don't even know about them, let alone get ’em. And good times? Mmmm...." He hovered around Clapton and then stood sidestage by the piano while Clapton delivered a throaty verse and then weaved clean-toned solos with young Austin guitarist Gary Clark Jr.

There were many highlights at Howlin for Hubert – a tribute to guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who played in Howlin’ Wolf’s band for decades and passed away on December 4th due to heart failure – but that was the peak. It was Richards’ first major musical appearance since the Rolling Stones last toured five years ago, and he showed little rust. After "Going Down Slow,"  he sat down and played metallic 12-string slide while singing "Little Red Rooster," and then strapped on a Gibson electric guitar to sing and trade licks with Clapton on "Spoonful." "It’s good to be back," Richards said, peering up to the balcony before breaking into a cackle. "Goddamn, it’s good to be back."

The entire show, which featured all-stars including Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Jimmie Vaughan, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II and Elvis Costello –  plus overlooked legends like Wolf’s former bandmates, harmonica player James Cotton, guitarist Jody Williams and saxophonist Eddie Shaw – was one for the history books. The event originated while Sumlin was still alive as a celebration to mark his 80th birthday. It stayed that way; Guest after guest recounted Sumlin’s unfaltering positivity and passion for his instrument. At one point, Toni Ann Mamary, Sumlin’s longtime manager and companion, tearfully recalled Sumlin tellling her, "I’m gonna be there. I don’t care if I play – I’m going to be there." She added, "Can you feel him?"

The night began with a film featuring classic Sumlin performance footage and a recent interview with him, where Sumlin humorously described how he found his own piercing signature sound after Wolf strongly urged him to lose the guitar pick. The stage lights then revealed two massive portraits of Sumlin behind the stage. His sunburst Stratocaster sat on a stand at center stage, with his trademark feathered cap hanging off of it. Clapton emerged – with short, slicked-back hair and wearing a blazer – with Cotton, Sumlin’s old musical partner.  Clapton kicked the night off howling an acoustic, stomping "Key to the Highway," complemented by Cotton’s razor-sharp harp fills.

Each set came and went in a flash. Performers were backed by an incredible house band including Steve Jordan and Jim Keltner, two of the best drummers alive, bassist Willie Weeks and pianist Ivan Neville. An early highlight was Jimmie Vaughan performing an electric solo version of "Six Strings Down," a tribute to fallen gunslingers. When he sang "Albert Collins up there / Muddy and Lightnin’ too / Albert and Freddy / playing the blues," it was easy to feel more than one spirit in the room. Kenny Wayne Shepherd and 77-year-old Jody Williams jammed on Williams' ferocious 1957 instrumental "Lucky Lou," Shepherd unleashing flurries of loud, screeching notes.  The New York Dolls’ David Johanson – who sang lead at many of Sumlin’s shows in recent years – emerged for "Evil," replicating Howlin' Wolf’s vocals with a weathered cat-scratch howl.

Nice to see Keith on stage playing and entertaining, clearly he's burnt life by all ends and it's caught up with him. If they want to tour they'll need some help for him on guitar, no way around that, ideally they can keep it in the family so that means Mick Taylor, but what kind of shape is he in? Maybe Waddy Wachtel, almost family, they can balance that by bringing back Bill Wyman, he can use the money, and Darryl "the munch" Jones never replaced him satisfactorily anyway.

I'm also ok if they don't tour, they've given us enough...all we can hope for is that Mick will bother sharing his unique talent while it's still intact...I somehow doubt it though, money, Obama, what other incentive could there be?

I just watched the YouTube videos of the event. Read all the comments.  Thought about it. Here's my comments.

Everyone "peaks" ~ it's true KEEF, MICK, even Clapton and Beck are all past their prime. But that doesnt mean they should hang it up! Music is their LIFE, and even if they arent the same as they used to be (and NONE of us are) I dont see that to be a reason to discontinue doing the thing in life that brings them happiness! The Stones really started with playing THE BLUES, so getting old is one sure reason to sing the blues! Nobody likes getting old, but I dont picture them in rocking chairs crying over the fact that they cant do what they used to do. I still love seeing KEEF play, and the head injury made it difficult for KEEF to sing and play at the same time. I dont hold it against him and I will continue to support my band, The ROlling Stones, all the way to the end baby. I am not expecting to see them play like they are young again. But I am expecting to see them do what they love to do most, play music. So it aint over until yet! Rock on!

I agree in principle. Sort of. However, their chops are only going to be helped by playing reasonably regularly. Especially at this stage of their lives. And that's something they havent been doing for five years. The decision to 'discontinue doing the thing in life that brings them happiness' has largely been their own, whether it's been as a band or individually. Music clearly isn't 'their life' if they're going years at a time without performing or recording. The evidence is pretty overwhelming - they're in semi-retirement.

Gazza, you are the voice of reason. I am the voice of longevity. If the Stones were a car, the mileage would be way up, it needs a trip to the body shop, a paint job, and a freshly charged battery, and the machine should keep rolling until the wheels fall off! With the proper attention, some well built cars can go for 50+ years even if they have been parked in the garage for a while! Tune them up and give them some gas!

Unfortunately, if you leave a car in the driveway for years on end, it tends to rust badly and has trouble when you start it up again.  It's especially problematic when its an old car - even if it's a very expensive classic -  that's taken quite a lot of battering down the years.   Grin

However, with a bit of TLC and some good mechanics, you never know. It might be good for one more go round the block, if its driven very carefully.

So what you're saying is,we need a Brand New Car? Cheesy BTW,weren't you at this show Gazza?

Shepherds Bush Empire, 8th June 1999.

Yep. What an unforgettable week, with that show being the highpoint.  Five UK dates in eight days, and the missus and I went to them all. Plus a great fans party the evening after this gig - the night that I first met Tom L, who proceeded to knock over FIVE of my pints (but no-one else's, strangely enough!) during the course of the evening. Despite being relatively sober.

£10 to get into that show (I think about £35 - 40 was the normal ticket price for that tour). Not bad for a Stones gig with Sheryl Crow as the opening act.

All this talk of cars.... Grin

Gazza- as always- has made a good point.

Musicians who love their music  don't quite making music.  They may stop touring for awhile, but they continue to create and play their instruments.  As much as I'd love to see a Stones show on a much smaller scale and without the hoops, whistles, and sequined jackets, I can be happy with the memories of them from them in the past.  Remember, it broke our hearts to see Keith struggling on stage 5 years ago.  Maybe Jagger could get himself in shape for THE Rolling Stones as he has taken better care of himself over the years,  but Keith on the other hand.....

To be hashed and rehashed, and rehashed again.  Time will tell...

John Lennon on made a comment in a interview that he wouldn't want to see Elvis the way he was before he died, he wanted to keep the memories of Elvis in the late 50's, it was a comment to the question Will The Beatles ever get back together? The Stones were in their peak before Mick Taylor left, there's so many favorite periods I have, but loved The '69 tour, it was when not only I, but a lot of people I know saw "Gimme Shelter" in those days that was the only video we saw of the Stones, besides the T.V. shows, but some people were so taken with Keith in that movie, I actually saw several, including myself Copy Keith's manner, hairstyle, scarfs, the way he walks, you get the point, I feel the hard life has caught up to Keith & there's nothing he can do about it, take him as he is, but really would you pay $200 to see it? or whatever the lowest price ticket is nowdays.

This is the crux and whilst most of us accept him for what he is and acknowledge that he's given us a lifetime of pleasure, the dividing issue is whether or not you'd go to the considerable expense of paying to witness it.  To some, its simply a case of being in the same room and giving 'support' no matter what as if its a football team, and thats reason enough to go - to others, its a question of whether what you're listening to merits the financial sacrifice and also whether or not you're comfortable with seeing someone you care about decline before your eyes.

I can see both sides of the argument, to be honest. Maybe I'm at a bit of an advantage in some ways as 2007 was the first time that I had some degree of acceptance that it might be the 'last time' and that after 47 Stones gigs, I didnt 'need' to see more shows in future, even if I would 'like' to see some more.  I still pretty much feel the same way. A new Stones tour is a bonus at this point, but I've already made up my mind that for various reasons, the days of feeling compelled to see more shows that I can afford are gone. *

(* I realise of course that once a tour starts, I will end up eating my words, will spend a year obsessively chronicling the tour on the internet, will go to concerts in nine countries like I did last time and bankrupt myself in the process. Don't say you havent been warned. )

This Band has been my musical passion for 38 of my 51 years of life.
No other artist/band comes close and never will.
If I get just one more chance to see them play live, I will gladly do so without complaint.
They owe me nothing; I owe them so much.

LJ.

Happy to Keith on stage again in Boston. Encouraging.

It's funny, Keith sings the blues like an Englishman and even country as well. There is a charm to it, but it's one of the reasons I think you don't hear him on the faster numbers (I don't mean this show, but in general because like most others I suspect there are other reasons he can't go crazy on the guitar anymore). Mick on the other hand has most of the inflections down and his accent is more convincing. Keith and Ronnie on Boogie Chillin on Steel Wheels was dynamite and Crawlin Kingsnake on Mr. Lucky is one of my favorite Keith moments ever.

Grin

Unfortunately, if you leave a car in the driveway for years on end, it tends to rust badly and has trouble when you start it up again.  It's especially problematic when its an old car - even if it's a very expensive classic -  that's taken quite a lot of battering down the years.   Grin

As far as cars go, the classics are so much more special looking, and built to last! They dont make 'em like they used to! 50 years ago they buiilt cars to last a lifetime! Actually a 25-49 year old car is classified as a Classic, a 50 year old car is classified as an Antique. Antiques arent driven much, but greatly admired and appreciated.

All very true.

However, I'm unaware of any classic (or antique) car that's been able to work properly after being fuelled for decades by a combination of heroin, cocaine, bourbon and vodka, whose engine has been slowed after the bonnet collided with a tree and whose accelerator is showing increasing signs of arthritis.

Nolte - The Rocks Off patron saint

This one might have a few miles left on the clock yet, but I'm not sure about lengthy road trips - especially ones that involve a lot of speed.

In fairness, its as easy to dismiss the gig footage as mediocre as it is to say it was terrific. Works both ways.

IMO - based on what I saw and heard on what was a very clear bootleg recording - it was pretty good.

His best performance of the evening. Some of the other stuff was so-so.

This, however, is absolutely wonderful.

Would kill  to see this kind of stuff at a Stones show. Doubt it'll happen though as the 'spectacle' unfortunately has to take precedence.

Back to the roots would be a nice theme on a 50th anniversary tour, dont ya think?

Back to the roots, a perfect tour theme! Yeah you got that right Meggy! Once you allow yourself to go totally gray, instead of using hair dye, it's a statement in itself 'dont want to bother with appearances' and let it all hang out, good or bad, I am what I am, take ot or leave it. I can see both sides of this coin. MICK will never go gray, I imagine he will be dying his hair up until the day he dies. I'm gonna do that too, lol.  Grin Vanity. Your so Vain, yeah we know Carly said it isnt about MICK but some people are vain, MICK is and I dont think KEEF really is or ever was.
