By mistake I was trying to put the messages about the CD in the thread about the tribute album and the messages about the show in the thread about that historic reunion but I (voodoo) made a big fuck up and now both threads are the same

What the fuck?

Sorry

Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

Walking by the tube yesterday, I heard "which rock band has a fans who's members are known as Shidobee's" or question to that effect.  It was on Millionaire with Meredith Viera.  Pretty cool.  Rotund loser contestant took a pass on the answer.  He says "I've heard that song, oh God, who could it be?"  Back to the tacos, chump....

Rolling Stones reunite with Bill Wyman in the studio

The Rolling Stones have reunited with their former bassist Bill Wyman to record a tribute song in honour of their late pianist Ian Stewart.

The song, a cover of Bob Dylan's 'Watching The River Flow', is set to be included on a tribute album for Stewart, who died of a heart attack in 1985. He had played and recorded with the band since their inception in 1962.

Fansite Iorr.org reports that the Dylan cover features "all Rolling Stones members including Bill Wyman". Original member Wyman left The Rolling Stones in 1992.

The album, which is called 'Boogie For Stu', has been helmed by pianist Ben Waters. It also features a contribution from his cousin, PJ Harvey, reports Spinnermusic.co.uk.

Waters has previously confirmed that Keith Richards plays on three tracks on the album, which is out in March.

The opening line of it makes for an ironic choice considering the band's lack of fresh output in recent years....

I'm pretty sure the details of the two 'Boogie for Stu' tribute gigs at the Ambassadors Theatre in London on 9th March were mentioned elsewhere, but I'm damned if I can see 'em.

Anyway, for anyone who's interested, the tickets (priced - £50 - £100) went on sale today from this site :

Charlie is confirmed to be appearing. Intriguingly, there is the inevitable tease of 'very special guests'...

according to this article, -     http://img.barks.jp/image/review/1000067808/300.jpg -  the release date now seems to be 11th April

Full personnel is now available :

Ben Waters :- Boogie 4 Stu , Tribute album to Stones pianist and stalwart Ian Stewart, featuring host of stars
Tribute album to Stones pianist and stalwart Ian Stewart, featuring host of stars

Eagle Records is delighted to release Boogie 4 Stu on 11 April 2011 [Cat. No. ]. The album is in tribute to pianist Ian Stewart, a founding member of the Rolling Stones, who went on to serve as their long-term road manager. Boogie 4 Stu was dreamt up and produced by fellow pianist Ben Waters, a member The A, B, C and D of Boogie Woogie, which also features Charlie Watts. The album is released to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation, and is released near the 25th anniversary of Stewart’s death. The album is mixed by Glyn Johns and the front cover is a newly commissioned portrait of Ian Stewart by Sir Peter Blake.

Initially planned by Waters as a solo album, Boogie 4 Stu soon took on a life of its own. When I told Charlie Watts that I was going to record the album, he asked to be on it. I asked Jools Holland if I could hire his studio. He said ‘No’, but that I could have it for free and that he would like to play on the album too, as Ian was a mate. Letters to other friends and former colleagues of Stu outlining the project elicited the simple response, Where do we need to be and when? Ben Waters, of course, plays on every track and is joined on one by his cousin PJ Harvey. Waters says, Everyone who is on the ‘Boogie 4 Stu’ album knew Ian Stewart really well, in fact most told me that he was their best mate! Despite this I felt many music fans need an introduction to the man and his music. To some he was a roadie that played a bit of piano, to his friends and fans the opposite was true. Most of the music on the album was laid down live, after no more than a couple of takes, and the atmosphere in the studio was fantastic.

The album highlight for many will be the version of Bob Dylan’s song Watchin’ The River Flow. This features Mick Jagger on vocals & harmonica, Keith Richards on guitar, Charlie Watts on drums, Ronnie Wood on guitar and Bill Wyman on bass. It’s the first time Wyman has recorded with his former colleagues since 1992. As well as his work with the Rolling Stones, Ian Stewart played with a host of other talents including Led Zeppelin [this album is named after their track ‘Boogie With Stu’], Howlin’ Wolf, The Yardbirds, his own band Rocket88 and more. Keith Richards said, Ian Stewart. I’m still working for him. To me the Rolling Stones is his band. Without his knowledge and organization … we’d be nowhere.

As a kid starting out in music, Waters learnt to play in Ian Stewart’s style, whom he saw perform at an event organized by his family. He had a collection of cine footage featuring Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis, I got access to those, and learned more by playing along. Some of his own performances were there too including the Montreux Jazz Festival. I love his style. No one else played like him, he was unique. Waters went on to join Stewart’s former band Rocket 88 and, of course, to play with Charlie Watts, so it seems that Ian Stewart has never been far away. I played with a band in Dorset with Hamish Maxwell [also on this album], who is exactly 40 years older than me, and it turned out he’d been Ian’s best man!

The evolution of Boogie 4 Stu from solo tribute to an album featuring some of the incredible talent that Ian Stewart came into orbit with has been amazing. There are two shows booked in at the Ambassador’s Theatre in London on March 9th. These will feature The A,B,C & D Of Boogie Woogie as the house band, with Jools Holland hosting and various special guest appearances.

The album finishes with the Sam Cooke track ‘Bring It On Home’, performed by Ian Stewart with Rocket 88 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. As Waters says, Ian Stewart was not a man who liked a fuss, but he would have loved the music on this album, and I wanted him to play it out.

This is excellent! Everyone loved Stu so they surely put their heart and souls into the album. STU's memory is still going strong! I want this record for sure. Is it coming out on vinyl or just CD? I think the trend is both formats for collectors, and/or deluxe editions. I've noticed the vinyl sections are now existing again in the music stores when for years you had to hunt for any vinyl. Nobody was making or buying them but now the new turntables have a cable that goes into your computer to copy it so you dont need to buy both.

I'm sure it probably will be released as a single. Whether it gets into kids ears is another story. But nice to hear that the proceeds go to charity. So it's all for a good cause besides being a nice trubute to Stu.

Considering their I don't give a toss about doing anything attitude, I'm looking forward to this more than a new album. The track list is also amazing.

At least they didnt opt to put some younger "star" on it to push sales.....and apparently were successful in keeping Kid Rock away too!

Gazza, I seem to remember that there were rumours of Bill joining the band on stage at the last O2 gig. We had a reliable (Irish !) source, but it never happened.  Wink

Kind of a shame. You'd think for a (possible) 50th anniversary (and likely final) tour, the original bassist would be there.
My dream tour would be to have Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Mick Taylor, Bill and Charlie be the band which tours the final tour. It'd feel kind of weird to have Darryl on bass for their final tour.

Why? He's been there for almost two decades. The original guitarist isnt there either, so why the original bassist should be expected to doesnt make sense. How many bands do anything of this nature?

And the Stones havent confirmed it will be their final tour. I'd guess they probably wont either.

Bill doesnt fly. Its totally implausible for him to go on a world tour. Plus, he'll be 76 next year, and there's the small matter of the fact that he's almost certainly not interested.

Yeah but the original guitarist has pretty good reason for not being there. He can't help it. He's dead.

Come on--you think they'd really tour past 2012-2013, maybe 2014 at most? The Stones organization moves very slowly, so you figure let's say this tour stops in 2013, 2014--It'll be 2017 or 2018 by the time they even get around to thinking about another round, and by that time, I think they'd be a tad too old.

Maybe not a world tour, but at least join them as a guest for a select dates at the very least? I haven't kept up with Bill's recent events but doesn't he still tour once in a while with his band?

I think Bill has intimated that he wouldnt mind playing with the Stones again if it was some kind of 'farewell' show.

When I texted from the Rattlesnake Inn at the 02 on the last night that I'd seen him in the backstage area, there was a near meltdown on the forums as quite a few people assumed that this meant it would be the final show.

In a way, I was almost relieved that he didnt join them!

Thats not the point. Everyone assumes it will be their last tour. It probably will and it certainly should be. But the Stones dont and never have even suggested it will be, and have never done so at any tour previously.

Bill tours regularly. But only in Northern Europe. He has NO interest in being in the Stones anymore and doesnt care for their latter day music. Why should he be expected to rejoin them and why should they even encourage it, other than for a couple of cameos?

The only reason Bill is being asked for by us fans is because of the authenticity and nostalgia value, we know he isnt in the band anymore! Same reason we wish Mick Taylor will be asked to join in. We know its not the to recreate the band as it was before, but these guys were vital to the band's success and should be asked out of respect and courtesy, and they deserve to be recognized for their contributions. Plus they are fvcking awesome!  Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

"Chicago Calling" I love it!!!!! Coincidentally it was the first single in which Nicky Hopkins appears, and his second recording; I have that one, by Cyril Davies with Nicky Hopkins and Carlo Little

From our Nicky Hokins website: Nicky made his first studio recording with Cyril to record "Country Line Special" b/w "Chicago Calling" (Pye International 7N25194) which was released in 1963 with Nicky playing acoustic and electric piano. This is an MP3 and the single image of this treasure, Nicky's first released work.

Four out of six surviving Stones then. Excellent.

However, no doubt it'll be the absence of the other two - assuming they don't appear -  that gets the newspaper headlines and adds more fuel to the flames of gossip.

Unless there are health issues, I honestly can't see a logical reason why either of them shouldn't be there. If they cant do it to honour Stu, then they cant do it for anyone.

Espicially if Taylor and Wyman make the effort. I guess their star power inflated egos are too much for the Glimmers.

Ideally, they'll be from the show and not the bar......

It looks like Mick and Keith didn't make it.  That's a shame but doesn't detract from the reason all others have gathered - STU.  It's about him.

from Silver Dagger on IORR :

Just back from the first show. Needless to say it was terrific. First a 20 minute piano boogie session with in turn, Ben, Axel and Jools Holland. Then the sax guys, Don Waller, another guy whose name I should know and Ben's son. Then 10 minutes later Charlie and Dave Green take the stage for a few numbers.

But the highlight was of course getting Ronnie, Mick, Charlie and Bill all on one stage. We got Bill singing You Never Can Tell, Mick Hucknall singing Can I Get A Witness as an encore but sadly without Ronnie and Mick Taylor. Er, even Shakin' Stevens turned up. A wonderful show. Hats off to Matt Lee for getting the tickets.

Thanks for posting the pics!  So jealous - would have loved to be there!

I suppose there are two schools of thought on the Glimmers showing up: a) Stu was founding member of the Stones and they did the first tribute show so they should be there

b) if they show up then it becomes the grand Stones reunion show and less about Stu, but still it's about Stu

Almost a no win for the Glimmers depending on how one wishes to look at it.

Is the show being taped for release?  Bootleg?

Interesting take Angie. But if Mick can do a tribute to Solomon Burke.he could of done this. I realize maybe their star power overwhelms the event a little bit. But their absence is just as noticeable.

agreed marko - i am speculating  of course but given keith's profund and oft professed admiration and indebtedness to stu i can't help but wonder that something other than " I can't be bothered" is behind is absence

i presume he was invited

as noted on another thread recently his public performances in the last few years have been rare and perfunctory at best

agree with your comment re death of stu and the stones - i still remember the feeling i had when i read the news - a real "day the music died"

WOW this is so cool seeing Taylor-Woods-Wyman-Watts work the same stage. The boys are givin' it up for STU!  Yeah, all except the undeniable absence of MICK & KEEF, and I wonder if those 2 sour faced egos are at home feeling sick over missing this.

Only Mick for the Solomon Burke tribute.  None of the other Stones were there.  And one would think they would have been there.  That's why I think this boils down to an almost no win for the Glimmers.  One factor or the other of the fans is going to complain no matter what they do with this one.

Thanks of posting the videos!  Very Cool!

Mick and Keith are dicks. It shows that they have more in common with each other than the rest of the band. That bullshit speech of Keith at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where he said I work for Ian Stewart was shown for what it was, empty words. These guys are swimming in money and the idea that they couldn't fly to their home country (not some far off place) even for one night is utter crap. People with far less means attend all types of things on the other side of the world. The only way I can see this as forgivable is if either or both of them had a serious reason for not attending. Not liking each other is not a serious reason.

They don't even have to like each other. Looking at the videos and the way this was orchestarted so to speak. They didn't have to do the whole show. They each could of done at least 1 song and not even together. Maybe Keith has an excuse because he hasn't played in so long. But mick has been active recently. Although this wasn't a big nationally televised event. So it wasn't big enough for his ego. Whatever,it sure is fun to see guys who love to just play do it....and if the golden girls don't want to do anything then let's hope these guys find a way to get together and play music some more.

These are so cool, I love seeing Woody & Mick T playing together, it's so great. They had good eye contact and played off each other nicely. Mick T still plays effortlessly. Ronnie's a real musician, he can play with anyone and everyone. Thats what I love about Ronnie, he's humble and not a big rock star ego tripper.

If KEEF couldnt be bothered to show up at least his daughter Angela did! She must of been on the guest list!

Agree completely - and no doubt the tabloids will have a field day with it. And with good reason.

So, Mick can fly 6,000 miles to do a tribute to Solomon Burke, but he can't do a tribute to Ian Stewart in his hometown? Why not? Well, I suppose the ego factor of his performance being seen by 400 million people instead of 400 in a club may JUST have something to do with it? And Keith can fly all the way to London to sign a few books but he can't do the same to even make a cameo appearance as a tribute to the guy who, according to his autobiography, was mainly responsible for bringing the band together in the first place?

They could put aside their differences in 1986 when they performed together as a tribute to Stu. But they cant in 2011? Speaks volumes for what they've both become since Stu died, unfortunately. Fuck me, how difficult could it have been? What a pair of classless prima donnas.

The Stones as a live band basically dont and wont exist unless there's some promoter out there willing to stump up a nine figure sum to entice Mick and Keith to tolerate each other being in the same room for months on end.

I know the show wasn't ABOUT the Stones, and Stu wasn't JUST the band's piano player, so it was good that the music reflected different aspects opf his career. The Stones WERE a part of that and there's really no excuse for them getting together and playing even a couple of songs together as a band.

It sounds like it was still a great night without them and everyone seems to have enjoyed it which is the main thing. I'd have loved to have been able to go. Great to see four of the six surviving band members together, but there'll always be an element of 'what should have been' that will overshadow a memorable evening, unfortunately.

A huge 'well done' to Ben Waters for bringing everyone together and to all the musicians who gave their time to perform.

I would refrain from judging them just yet. I can't help but remember all the sh*t we've been throwing at Keith for his lack of activity in the near past and then it turned out Patti had been sick. I'm not saying it's matter of illness this time too, but I can't rush into conclusions without knowing exactly what happened.

And I think it would be unfair to doubt what Stu meant either to Mick or Keith, just because they didn't attend a gig, even a gig dedicated to him.

Like I said previously, if the absence was health related (be it themselves or someone close) then fair enough. No question about that.

If that isn't the case, it reflects badly on both of them. Sorry, but to me there's no getting around that. It was a tribute to Stu, after all. Not someone they barely knew or hardly ever played with.

There's nothing to suggest that either of them had longstanding prior working commitments that would have clashed with it. Plus they both have residencies and family nearby. Its not as if the gig took place in Japan.

As a fan, it just disappoints me that they will not perform outside of a tour as a band. There have been opportunities in recent years for them to do so, and its ended up as a 'solo' gig or a half-band reunion - the RnR Hall of fame tribute in 1989, Live Aid, The Concert for New York, the 'Ronnie Wood & Fiends' show in London in 2005 - and now you can add last night to it.

The last time they did so? The Stu tribute in 1986. And THAT was a private gig for family and friends. You have to go all the way back to the Stones' surprise appearance at the two CNIB shows in Toronto in 1979 for the last time that they performed a public gig as a band which wasn't part of a tour. There hasnt even been a TV appearance in that time either.

As a fan, I too would like to see them playing live more often, lock themselves in the studio and make some new music, have a better relationship as a band and see the Glimmers growing over their super-inflated egos - I'm with you 100%.

But if we were to see it as a gesture for Stu, I think what they did back in 86 was more important for them and him, than showing up in a public gig. It sure as hell wouldn't hurt if they did, and yes, they could have easily done it - but I just don't think we should rely much on this with regard to what it says about their respect for Stu.

Not really, Fotini. I don't see that the two have to be mutually exclusive or that should be a pecking order of importance.

Not a single member of the public outside the band's inner circle saw that 1986 show. No one's asking or expecting them to pull off a 2-hour gig, but throwing fans a few crumbs once in a while by playing a few songs together as a band when a perfect and worthy opportunity presents itself isn't THAT much to ask, I think.

Superb night ! Both shows were fantastic. Bill and Charlie were having a ball. Mick and Ronnie have re- invented weaving.

As soon as they started Worried life Blues,I knew there would be no Keith. As stated above it was unforgivable in my opinion, but to be honest the night may have suffered if we had had a Mick n Keef ego fest.

Real genuine warmth in the room for Stu and the 4 Stones that turned up.

Highlights ;
Can I get a Witness - M Hucknel asking Bill which album it's from !  Grin
Worried Life Blues
Little Queenie

Gig of the decade.  stu-smiling

i dont get it
Keef can play the Gram Parsons tribute
Mick pays tribute to Solomon
but the two couldnt be arsed paying tribute to one of the main reasons the Stones rocked.
Im sure Stus family and friends would have loved to seen the glimmers there.

moments like these are to be treasured, im sure the two ladies will one day regret their absence.

Taylor was touring NA with the Alvin Lee Band at the time, and was invited to play at the December 14th show at Kemper Arena in Kansas City MO.

There's a soundboard recording of the show, but MT is kinda buried in the mix.
Apparently he was best heard through the on-stage monitors.

Martin Elliott's review

We had good seats.  There was a picture slide show prior to the gig with Ian
photos and quotes from colleagues.  The crime writer Ian Rankin came on to
introduce the show.  Born in Fife where Ian came from he must be a Stones
fan hence the title of his compendium of short stories.

Ben Waters started the show alone and was followed by Axel Zwingenberger and
then Jools Holland with Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Dave Green now adding
rhythm.  Boogie-woogie was high on the agenda which you would expect from
previous gigs by the ABCD band.  Ben is in his thirties but has a huge
connection with the boogie and is very well respected.  He has performed for
HRH and at private parties for Mick Jagger plus shows with many many artists
http://www.benwaters.com/ including Shakin' Stevens and Jools Holland.  So the show
rolled along and then the hillbillies joined in - actually Don Wellor and
Willy Garnet (from Ian's band Rocket 88) on saxophone.  A very lucky Tom
Waters (10 years old) also played brass.  Hamish Maxwell performed an early
vocal (he is a UK blues singer from Dorset who has played with Waters
before) and he was followed by Mick Hucknall.  Then the roll turned to rock
as guitars by Ron Wood and Mick Taylor were added.  Despite vowing to sit
politely my rock sap rose and I went front stage right as the atmosphere
definitely heightened.  Worried Life Blues with both guitarist trading licks
and Ron on vocals was an early highlight.  Other rock and roll numbers were
played - Shake, Rattle and Roll plus You Never Can Tell with Bill on vocals
(one of his staple vocal turns).  Don't Lie To Me was sung by Shakin'
Stevens - doesn't he look like Ray Davies?  Down The Road Apiece illustrated
that Mick T and Ron's confidence was high and it struck me at how
effortlessly they worked together with smiles beaming by now from all on
stage.  Ben Waters certainly has a great integrity to harness all this music
power.  We got the highlight for me which was Little Queenie - true rock
boogie.  Some High Heel Sneakers and Can I Get A Witness.  I am not sure of
the whole setlist so apologies.

It was a gig that was unrepeatable and immense in Stones history.  It could
have been made ultra-perfect by the addition of Mick and Keith but unless it
was at the finale I fear it could have ruined a great balanced show full of
high quality musicians either being the band backbone or doing their cameo
performances.  Of course the curtain bow was spectacular as you saw Charlie,
Bill, Ronnie and Mick T all together but they did it in a reserved manner
not wishing to detract from Ben Waters and his other contributors.  If it
wasn't for Ben the whole gig would not have taken place

One of the reasons I skipped this gig (other than the fact that the cheapest seats were £50)  was because I knew Mick and Keith wouldn’t show – I cannot believe some here and on other boards even speculated that they may share a stage. A small London theatre, limited publicity… it’d take a 9/11-style disaster to get them to share a stage outside a lucrative Rolling Stones tour.

From guitarist Martyn Hope's website:

“Boogie For Stu”

...

On Stage with Rolling Stones’ legends

I was lucky enough to be asked by Shaky to join him on stage to perform with Rolling Stones legends (past and present) Ronnie Wood, Charlie Watts, Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman and the ABC&D Band.

The occasion was BOOGIE FOR STU - a charity event organised by the brilliant pianist BEN WATERS to mark the launch of his new album - a tribute to Ian Stewart, founder member of the Stones and pianist for the band. The event took place at the Ambassadors Theatre, in London’s West End.

It was a memorable night for me and such a treat to share guitar playing duties with Ronnie and Mick!

Hope also posted a video of 'Don't Lie To Me' - www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcrY0lub9RQ

Some very nice MT fretwork...

Nice clips and pictures.  It was a good time with exceptional musicians.  No explosions or posturing - just good music.  The kind Stu would have liked.  I could watch these all day. Smiley  Can't stand the thought of this thread sinking to the bottom.

I like Mick T's quote - "I'm note sure they would have stayed together if Stu hadn't been there.' Imho  he's correct:they didn't.

As I (and others) have suggested the strong argument is the Stones as a "band" - as opposed to a "brand" - died with him.

I liked Jeff Beck's quote about Stu the best.  That's the beauty in the tribute.  There was no pizzazz just great relaxed playing.  The more I watch the more I like.  I am knocked out by Mick Taylor.  And seeing Bill Wyman again - outstanding.  I'd hate to see this thread get buried again in a sea of bumped up schtick.

Ben Waters has a few more 'Boogie 4 Stu' dates listed on his gigs page, including "very special guests" on May 22.

Maybe the Ambassadors wasn't the last we'll see of some of these guys...

Very nice and often very funny piece on Stu in the new issue of UNCUT which is just out.

Thankfully, JJackFl over on IORR has saved me the bother of scanning it - many thanks to him for this :

It's quite funny in parts, isnt it - but there's also an element of poignancy about it as it really illustrates how the Stones have changed so much as a band (or organization) since Stu died.

In a nutshell - while the 'Sixth Stone' or 'We're working for him' cliches up to '85 could be said about Stu, since then you could argue with some justification that that tag has applied more to Cohl than anyone else.

The more I watch the more I am convinced it would not have been as good if Mick and Keith had been there.  Their presence would have added a production element and tension that is happily missing.  I only wish the Stones could keep it as loose, relaxed and real as the Boogie for Stu has been.  That would be something to see.

I believe only the studio album is being released and the live show was just in support of that. I don't think any plans exist for a live album nor have any boots popped up yet?

Posted this on the previous page:

Made an inquiry through Ben Waters' site regarding a possible audio/video release of these shows.

Response was that nothing's planned, "but keep an eye on the website."

As for recordings, UrbanSteel has compiled several YouTube clips on PAL DVD - here or here.

Still no audio...

It was more relaxed without them, imo.  As Charlie said earlier - "It's about the music, not the money."  If they had been there the focus would have been on THEM and how they reacted to being on stage after Keith's book.  When you have Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood on stage saluting Stu - that's more than enough for me.  That's about the MUSIC.

BOOGIE 4 STU

A great night at The Ambassadors on the 9th March, to celebrate the life of Ian Stewart, founder member and pianist with The Stones.

As Stu was a boogie woogie man, the house band was The ABC&D of Boogie Woogie, comprising two pianos, a bass and Charlie Watts on drums. Add to that a mix of Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor, Mick Hucknall, myself and a cast of too many to mention and it turned out to be a wonderful evening to honour Stu.

Sir Peter Blake attended, having generously painted a wonderful portrait of Stu for the Album cover. The entire proceeds of the album will go the Charity "Mending Broken Hearts" for The British Heart Foundation.

It was a wonderful one off evening which would be difficult to reproduce.

But you never know - we may try sometime!

Well, for people who appreciate music as much as we do, the Boogie will always keep me happy.

Always liked it, but never really did any history, like it's connection w/ Ragtime, always liked Ronnie's Ragtime Annie (Lillie's Bordello) too

'Boogie 4 Stu' CD review

Published: Friday, April 15, 2011
By Mark Voger/The Star-Ledger

...

Boogie 4 Stu
Ben Waters (Eagle Records)

Brian Jones wasn't the first person to get kicked out of the Rolling Stones. Six years before Jones, by then an out-of-control junkie, was fired from the band in 1969, pianist Ian Stewart was booted out for a more mundane reason.

He wasn't cute enough.

So believed the Stones' handlers, anyway. But Stewart took it like a champ. "Okay," he said (as recalled by Keith Richards in his memoir, "Life"). "I'll just drive you around."
"Stu" — a pragmatic person with a naturalistic boogie-woogie piano style — became the Stones' trusted tour manager, sometime pianist and unofficial ombudsman. Stewart was no record-company yes man; when he said something sounded wrong, it sounded wrong.

If you're wondering what Stewart, who died of a heart attack in 1985 at age 47, sounded like, simply access the iPod in your brain. He played on the Stones' "Brown Sugar," "Dead Flowers," "Sweet Virginia" and "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll," as well as Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" and "Boogie With Stu" — hence, the title of Ben Waters' 11-track, star-studded tribute CD.

The big news of "Boogie 4 Stu," which benefits the British Heart Foundation, is that it presents a reunion of the Mach 3 lineup of the Rolling Stones: singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Richards and Ron Wood, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts. This lineup played from 1975, when Wood joined, until 1992, when Wyman quit. The five musicians perform a cover of Bob Dylan's 1971 single "Watching the River Flow."

Waters — a pianist based in Dorset, a coastal county in Southern England — explains in his liner notes that his playing was greatly influenced by Stewart, to the extent that he was drafted to replace Stewart in the late pianist's side band, Rocket 88. Waters is also a member of Watts' side band, the A, B, C & D of Boogie. When Watts learned Waters was planning a tribute to Stewart, he offered to play on it. Things snowballed, with the other Stones insisting on participating. (Waters flew to New York to record Richards on three songs; Jagger contributed vocals and harmonica via e-mail within an hour of receiving the track; Watts played on six songs.)

Also joining in are singer PJ Harvey (a cousin of Waters) and Rocket 88 saxophonists Willy Garnet and Don Weller. The album was mixed by Glyn Johns, an engineer on the Stones' "Exile on Main St." album, and the cover was painted by Peter Blake, the artist who designed the iconic "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" cover.

Which is all well and good, but how does it sound?

"Boogie 4 Stu" is a joyful collection — heartfelt blues, hot boogie-woogie — and a fitting tribute to its honoree. It sometimes has a deceptively casual vibe: If you're not an aficionado of the genre, a feeling of sameness may creep in. But boogie-woogie nuts and Stones completists will find plenty of reasons to revisit the album repeatedly.

The record opens unselfconsciously with Waters playing solo on "Boogie Woogie Stomp," a '30s genre standard from Chicago pianist Albert Ammons. Highlights include "Worried Life Blues," a snaky vocal duet between Richards and Wood; "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor," with a '40s-ish vocal by singer-pianist Jools Holland; "Midnight Blues," a smoky two-piano jam between Waters and Holland, accompanied only by Watts' laid-back brushwork; and the Stones' Dylan cover, a positively exquisite reunion.

The only clunker is the cover of Ray Charles' "Lonely Avenue," on which Harvey sings. It should be no surprise that her vocal style isn't a perfect fit with the material or the company; she and Waters take the avant-garde route, which doesn't quite succeed.

"B4S" closes with an undated live version of Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home to Me," played by Rocket 88 with Stewart — a bittersweet coda.

nj.com

Different strokes...'Lonely Avenue' ain't no clunker to me.
Love the whole damn album.

Boogie chillun!

I disagreed with that clunker remark too.  Lonely Avenue is a great song.  I think the entire album is clunker-free.  Glad we have the opportunity to hear the album in it's entirety right here.

Ben Waters honors Ian Stewart and reunites the Rolling Stones with Bill Wyman

Ben Waters has managed to do what no one else has been able to do for a little more than 20 years: reunite the Rolling Stones for a studio recording with the band’s former bass player Bill Wyman. As previously reported, Wyman and the current members of the Rolling Stones (lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts and guitarist Ronnie Wood) recorded a cover version of Bob Dylan’s “Watching the River Flow.” The track is part of an excellent collection of songs on Waters’ album “Boogie 4 Stu,” a tribute to the late Ian Stewart (one of the founding members of the Rolling Stones), who later became a tour manager and session/touring musician for the band. (Stewart died of a heart attack at the age of 47 in 1985. Proceeds from “Boogie 4 Stu” benefit the British Heart Foundation.)

The last Rolling Stones album to feature Wyman was 1989’s “Steel Wheels,” and the most recent Rolling Stones album is 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” It is perhaps testament to Stewart’s profound impact on the Rolling Stones that this tribute to Stewart was able to bring together the band and former Stones bassist Wyman for a new recording after all these years. Stewart was also a major influence on Waters, who organized and played on the “Boogie 4 Stu” album, which also features performances from PJ Harvey (Waters’ cousin) and Jools Holland. Waters is also the keyboardist for Watts’ other band: The A, B, C & D of Boogie Woogie. In this exclusive interview, I chatted with Waters by phone while he was on his way to Finland for one of the concerts on his 2011 tour.

What is your very first memory of the Rolling Stones?

My earliest memory is of Stu [Ian Stewart]. He played at my aunt and uncle’s (PJ Harvey’s parents) wedding anniversary when I was 8 years old. I was more influenced by Ian Stewart’s kind of music — R&B, blues. I also liked Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis.

There are so many songs that could have been selected for “Boogie 4 Stu.” How did you go about choosing the songs to record?

I started it as a solo project, so I had already chosen the material. I chose the songs and planned to record them with my band, and then what happened was that [other people] like PJ Harvey [got involved]. Charlie Watts is in the band I’m in at the moment called the A, B, C & D of Boogie Woogie. I heard that Bill Wyman wanted to play bass, and then Keith Richards and Ronnie played guitar [on some tracks]. It was a matter of getting a hold of them.

What’s the whole story about getting all of the Rolling Stones and Bill Wyman to perform on “Watching the River Flow”?
They all ended up on it by accident, really. Charlie had played on several tracks [on “Boogie 4 Stu”], then Ronnie Wood played on some tracks. And Keith played on three tracks, including “Watching the River Flow.” And then Bill Wyman came in. It was the first time he had played [on the same song as the Rolling Stones] in 20 years. And we asked Mick Jagger to be on it, and they all ended up on the same track.

The reason why we chose this Bob Dylan tune was … well, it’s funny, because Ian Stewart didn’t actually like Bob Dylan. He was very narrow in his taste in music. He didn’t really like rock’n’roll, like Jerry Lee Lewis and stuff. He was more into avant-garde jazz, and he did like R&B, but he just didn’t like Bob Dylan. And he used to say, “Bob Dylan has only one decent tune: ‘Watching the River Flow.’” He kept saying that over and over again. So that’s why I chose it.

There are two tracks — “Kidney Stew” and “Chicago Calling”— that are exclusively on the Japanese release of “Boogie 4 Stu.” Why are they only on the Japanese release?

When you [sell] a CD in Japan, it’s twice the price of an American or English release, so they [the Japanese record company] always like to have extra tracks.

The Ian Stewart tribute concert in London on March 9, 2011, had an all-star lineup that included former and current members of the Rolling Stones (Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman), as well as Mick Hucknall, Jools Holland and Shakin’ Stevens. With all those stars involved in the show, how did you decide which songs to perform?

I talked about it with Ronnie Wood and some of the other people … and we eventually did get to a [set list]. It was a bit shambolic, but in a way, that was very freeing. Basically, people turned up, and it was shambolic, and it was basically “go with the flow.”

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were asked to perform at the Ian Stewart tribute concert. What's the real story of why Mick and Keith weren’t there?

I know there’s been a lot of speculation about why they weren’t there. Keith was in the Caribbean, and he couldn’t get back [to London]. He had a family thing. It wasn’t possible for him to be there and fly out the next day. He sent his best wishes. And Mick just couldn’t get away. And they both felt that if one turned up and not the other, the press would’ve had a field day, really.

Have you read Keith Richards’ memoir “Life”?

No, I haven’t.

In “Life,” Keith described Ian Stewart as the “arbiter of events” when it came to the Rolling Stones. Based on what you know about Ian Stewart and your personal admiration of him, how would you interpret that description?

I couldn’t really say, but as far as I was concerned, when I first got into playing music, I heard people say that [Ian Stewart] was [overshadowed] by the Rolling Stones, and I found that really sad. So I did lots of research, and I realized that he just didn’t really care about his own fame. He had a bigger picture in mind. He and Brian Jones started the Rolling Stones, but [Ian] put himself last, and he was a bigger person for it. What was really meant to be is what happened.

With recording technology, people no longer have to be in the same room at the same time to record music on the same song. But on “Boogie 4 Stu,” were you actually in the same room with any of the musicians when they played on any of the album’s tracks?

Charlie [Watts] on drums, Dave Green on bass, myself on piano, and Willy Garnett and Don Weller on saxophone were on the main sessions. I was in the studio with Ronnie [Wood] and Bill Wyman. It [“Boogie 4 Stu”] sounds very much like a live band; it’s very old-fashioned.

We only overdubbed Ronnie and Keith on [some of] the tracks. But I was in the studio with Ronnie, and I spent a day with Keith. Bill came in at the end and overdubbed his bass parts.

Are there any songs that were recorded for “Boogie 4 Stu” that haven’t been released? And if so, do you think they’ll be released?

There are about five or six, some with Charlie on them. I can’t think of the titles right now. They might be released. I don’t know yet.

If Ian Stewart were alive today and you had a chance to play any song with him, which would it be?

I think I would play the last track of the album: “Bring It on Home to Me.”

The rationale around Keith/MicK seems reasonable..and when you think about it having them there would have taken a lot of the spotlight on the other players including Waters who put it all together........

Lots of gems in this interview with Ben Waters.  Mick and Keith weren't there for the right reasons.  The hysterical reason for including "Watching the River Flow"  and the HUGE impact (and selflessness) of Ian Stewart.  Carla Hay asked the right questions.

Once again - a BIG thank you to Ben Waters.  Following this project has been a real highlight for me.    Smiley

BEN WATERS INTERVIEWED: One more time for the boogie woogie man Ian Stewart

...

Elsewhere by Graham Reid

When he was just nine – 26 years ago – Ben Waters briefly saw something in a pub which changed his life. He was at his auntie and uncle's 25th wedding anniversary in the Wynyard Gap in Somerset, just across the border from his home county of Dorset, and the great pianist Ian Stewart was a family friend who sat down and played some boogie-woogie.

“It was the first live music I had ever heard," says Waters, "and he had his band Rocket 88 there. We could only stay for half an hour because we were so young but I just remember thinking it was awesome.

“The thing was not just that it was the first live music I'd heard, but I didn't get to hear music like that. All the kids at school were into all sorts, like [Europe's] The Final Countdown, which I have nothing against but it didn't really do that much for me.

“So I heard Ian and thought it was incredible.”

Ian Stewart – “Stu” as he is widely known – was one the silent sidemen of rock, the original Rolling Stone whose lantern-jaw looks didn't fit with the aspiring rhythm and blues band which Brian Jones had founded in '62. Stu joined Jones and the others -- Mick, Keith and Charlie -- would follow later. When he was sidelined by manager Andrew Loog Oldham in May '63 he didn't cause a fuss but stayed on as a roadie for the band and played on all their albums (except Beggar's Banquet) up to his death in December '85 of a heart attack. He was 47.

...

Much loved by musicians, he also played on albums by Led Zeppelin (Boogie with Stu was on Physical Graffiti) and George Thorogood (Bad to the Bone), was in the acclaimed Blues Band alongside Paul Jones formerly of Manfred Mann and in his own groups including Rocket 88.

Waters, now a boogie-woogie pianist of some repute who had been invited to play with Rocket 88 after Stu's death, wanted to pay tribute to the man who had influenced him.

So he decided to do a solo tribute, but Stones drummer Charlie Watts heard about it and wanted in, then came Ronnie Wood, and so Waters sent Bill Wyman, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger a note saying what he was up to.

They all signed on and the album Boogie 4 Stu: A Tribute to Ian Stewart (reviewed here) includes a version of Bob Dylan's Watching the River Flow which has the Wyman/Wood Stones line-up together for the first time since '92.

There's also a version of Ray Charles' Lonely Avenue featuring PJ Harvey – whose parents were friends of Stu's – and a guest list which include Jools Holland and members of Rocket 88.

"Yes, it grew into something which I didn't expect," says Waters. “They all came along for Stu really, which says a lot about Ian Stewart that 25 years after his death people still want to do something for him.

“Keith told me, 'People say bad things about Me and Mick, but I've never heard a bad word about Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart.' It's hard to be sacked from a band in the way he was and most people would have said, 'Fuck you, I'm off.' But he didn't, he said he'd stay on as a van driver.

“That's a big thing to do, there can't have been any ego to him and even in his own band he was getting piano players in. There are not that many who would do that.

“I think he was a team player and pretty selfless, not just with the Stones but all the other bands he played with.

“He worked hard for the furtherment of all the bands he played with. I don't think he craved adulation. He seemed to have gained more respect over the years. Every person you speak to across the board, famous or not, all liked Stu.

“Jeff Beck said he drives the long way home to go past Stu's house because he loved him so much.”

...

For Waters however that seminal moment of seeing Stu play didn't take a grip until many years later when he saw a Fats Domino 60th birthday celebration on television which featured Fats, Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis. As soon as he saw the fat man smiling and heard the boogie-woogie sound he remembered Stu and recalled what happy music it was.

“I said to mum and dad I wanted to learn to play and they say my aunt and uncle still had Ian's videos that he'd got on tour in America, videos of Amos Milburn, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Louis Jordan . . . Just hundreds of hours of footage.

“My biggest treasure was finding two concerts Stu did. One was at a Montreux Jazz Festival and one in Wales. You could just see him playing and I was trying to learn to play like that and work out what he was doing.

“Then another friend of my aunt and uncle's, saxophonist Will Garnet who played in Rocket 88 and  was on the video, called and asked if I could come and do a show with them. I said, “Yes please” but thought I had to really nail it and so I tried to copy Stu – and never got it quite right.

“Then I started playing gigs with the band and that helped a lot, you just learn to play with the band.

“It was just happy music and must have been in the blood because my dad loved Fats Domino. But I wouldn't be playing if it wasn't for Stu so I wanted to say thank you to him with this album”.

Waters says Stu's style was unique in that his was a rolling kind of sound (“he put the roll in rock'n'roll”) and was like Otis Spann in that he filled the gaps and in a band that was a bit “staccato” his sound would take the rough edges out.

When he first had the idea of doing the album he was prepared to book a small local studio but when Watts got wind of it and wanted in Waters knew he needed a better environment. He approached Jools Holland to hire his studio (Holland refused, but said he could use it for free if he could play on the album too), then Wood was in and so the letter went out to the other Stones, including Bill Wyman.

“But trying to get the Rolling Stones together, I dunno. They are all doing stuff and around the world. One is in the Caribbean, one is filming in America . . . it's quite hard to find the place you can do it.

“It got to a point where I said I needed to finish it off in the next two weeks and Keith said, 'Right, I can do next Thursday in New York.' This was on the Sunday so I had to book a last minute flight and you have to have this special electronic thing to travel to America and that took 72 hours and I had to go to the embassy.

“I had to rush to New York and record it then send it to Mick and everyone did everything in one take. So it was more the logistics of getting people together that took the time. And then after we finished I didn't want to mix it myself. Before if I'd done it myself I would have mixed it but with all these guys on it, it needs the best so I went to Glyn Johns and then we had to find a mixing studio.”

Waters laughs that Richards would have no clue about the logistics of him getting to New York at such short notice but despite being jet-lagged he wouldn't have missed it.

“At the time Keith had his book just out and it had knocked Mark Twain off the number one spot. So he'd done so many interviews he was fed up and just he wanted to make music. 'I've been let out of jail', he said. A lot of the entourage were saying, 'Do you think we should go now, Keith?' and he'd say 'No' and we'd talk and jam a bit more until the early hours. That was good fun.”

The Dylan song on which all those Stones appear – Richards, Wood and Watts are also on Worried Life Blues – was a choice that made itself.

“Ian Stewart didn't like Bob Dylan, he was a man of very specific tastes. Charlie said to me the other day that Stu never changed in all the years he knew him. He always had the same haircut, the same clothes and liked the same music. He didn't like avant-garde jazz but Lionel Hampton. His field was very narrow.

“He didn't like too much rock'n'roll but liked r'n'b. He used to say quite often that Bob Dylan only ever wrote one decent tune and the rest were crap, but he liked Watching The River Flow so I had to do that.”

Leon Russell played piano on the original session – “I think that's why he liked it, it had boogie-woogie piano on it – but Jagger does an extraordinary vocal on this new version where he drags the vowels and vocal lines out.

“He did it in the south of France and funnily enough Charlie had gone down to visit so they were both there. He gave me an e-mail address but because it was a big file – and I'm not into technical things – I couldn't send the whole track down. So we couldn't send the brass or Jools Holland on Hammond.

“So all we sent was the piano and drums. So he heard that and sung it and sent it back. I did a guide vocal which was very straight but Mick dragged things out and it's really expressive. His vocal is incredible and I wonder if it helped just having piano and drums. It was very barren and not much going on so it must have made him feel like he did have to fill up the gaps more.

“But it's also a good platform to sing over because if you've got guitars and so on you are fighting for space. If you've just got this blank canvas it gives him more scope to take charge of it and I think that's what he did.”

Waters said he enjoyed recording Wood on Worried Life Blues but when he took the track to America Richards said. “Why did you let him sing on that? That is mine and Stu's tune, I want to sing that too.”

“So he sang it and I said later, 'Keith, how would you feel if there was one verse each by you and Ronnie” and he said that would be alright. So I did that and I phoned Mick Jagger and told him what I'd done. He laughed and said in jokey way, “I bet that sounds fucking awful!”

...

The Lonely Avenue track with Polly Harvey was her choice and she had grown up with Stu and Rocket 88 dropping around to see her parent and stay at the house. She had a lot of Stu's records and searched for a song that she felt appropriate.

“She liked that tune and liked the lyrics. She only likes to do things she's really proud of and that mean a lot to her and she did it in her unique style. She said she'd like to record it on Stu's piano so we went to my aunt's house and recorded in their living room. It was such a lovely day, and she did two very ethereal vocals in the background and put saxophone on it.

“She does things in a unique way and it was a good experience for me recording with her because she is very in command of what she does. I've played that piano quite a lot and in way, although it's all in my in my head, it makes me play more like Stu.”

Ian Stewart was quite an eccentric – he didn't play anything in a minor key, and in his biography Richards tells of him coming on stage at stadiums wearing Hush Puppies, and with a coffee and a cheese sandwich which he's put on top of the piano – and during the recording of the album Waters was hearing great stories of Stu in the old days, generally about him driving the van with lawn chairs in the back on top of amps for the rest of the band to flop out on.

“When I first started playing people would say 'Who are your influences?' and I'd say Fats Domino, Ray Charles and Ian Stewart. And they'd say, 'Ian who?'

“But he was equally as talented as those others, but in a different way. And he was quietly inspirational on records that most people have got, whether it be the Stones or Led Zeppelin.

“So he had done a lot for the English music scene. So I thought if I can do a CD and tell more people about him I would be really proud.”

And in a nice touch the album ends with Ian Stewart himself playing Bring It On Home To Me.

“That's my favourite tune on the whole thing. When we put it on and listened to it it sent shivers up my spine because I hadn't listened to it for a while. It sounded so fresh and better than anything we'd done.

“It's a unique track because there are not many tracks that feature him so much.”

The album closes a chapter for Waters -- some of the proceeds go to the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal of the British Heart Foundation -- but he's hardly short of things to do. He tours regularly playing boogie-woogie and in some circles he is in demand as . . . a wedding pianist?

You played at Jools Holland's wedding, which must be strange to be the pianist at a pianist's wedding?

“Yeah, it was fantastic. I played through dinner. He had about 700 guests and people flying in by helicopter. Prince Charles, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Dave Gilmour . . . And a lot of English comedians like Dawn French and Lennie Henry.

But Jools went round and made sure his old uncles and the staff who had worked for him were alright. It was big party. Jools has got this way of disarming you whatever you do. He'll make sure you feel special.

“At the wedding I started up and he must have known I was a bit nervous. I did Suitcase Blues, which is on the Stu album, and he came over and put his arm around me and said, 'How did you know that was one of my favourite tunes? Thanks for doing that'.

"He has that way of stopping you worrying and is very good at making you relaxed there, and in the studio and television shows."

For a wedding gift Waters bought Holland a piece of sheet music by pianist Albert Ammons and had it framed. Later Holland was interviewed in Mojo magazine and, while choosing one of Waters' albums as one of his favourite boogie-woogie albums, told of getting the gift.

He said it was very funny  . . . because neither Ammons, himself or Waters could actually read music.

Another good interview, with even more insight on the Stones contributions.

'B4S' gets better with every spin...

Excellent article.  I'll be forever grateful to Ben Waters.  He strikes me as being pretty selfless himself.  Very loyal and appreciative of the talents and efforts of others and willing to go the extra mile to accommodate the people who wanted to contribute.

I enjoyed reading about the logistics of putting it together as well.  Seems a little band tension is present even when they are miles apart.  Ian Stewart really was loved and revered by so many.  I smile at the thought of Jeff Beck taking the long way home just so he could drive past Stu's house.

I loved everything about the recording, the clips, the tribute and this thread.

Charlie and Ben Waters talk 'Boogie 4 Stu'.
Dialogue's mostly in German, but the enjoyment this project brought them is clear in any language.
Interview also includes some nice ABC& D performance footage.

Very nice.  Ben certainly made sure many more people will know who Ian Stewart was - that was his goal and he achieved it.  Also planted Lonely Avenue in my head for the rest of the day.

Same here, TD.  I recall one review that singled out Lonely Avenue as kind of a clinker.  I find it to be just the opposite.  It's interesting to  hear the story behind the selections in the interviews with Ben Waters.

After listening to Boogie With Stu (thanks to a generous friend who shall remain anonymous), it's not what I was expecting. It's not Stonsey sounding at all. I was surprised with all the jazz music! I prefer a little more rock but it's all good!

Win A Copy Of 'Boogie 4 Stu'

...

Ben Waters is one of the world's leading boogie woogie/rock `n' roll piano players. Still in his thirties, he has entertained all over the world, playing alongside Chuck Berry, Shakin' Stevens and many other rock `n' roll legends. Boogie 4 Stu is a tribute CD in memory of Ian Stewart founder of the Rolling Stones, who, along with Jools Holland and PJ Harvey have contributed to the album. This is hard-hitting authentic boogie and rock `n' roll at its best. Mixed by Glyn Johns (Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin) with artwork by renowned British artist by Sir Peter Blake.

Skeleton Pete was there:

Ben Waters’ Piano Boogie @ J&R Electronics NYC

August 10, 2011

...
Ben Waters Rolls the 88's at J&R Electronics In-Store Event - Click to view the image gallery.

What It Is… Grade A Boogie Woogie, Served with a Smile
Pianist Ben Waters is on a dual mission with his “Boogie 4 Stu” album. First, he’d like to spread an appreciation of founding Rolling Stones member Ian Stewart and the music he loved to play. Second, – acknowledging the ailment Stewart succumbed to in 1985 – to raise contributions for the study and treatment of heart disease via sales of the album. Since posting my review of the star studded tribute back in June I’ve been hoping there would be an opportunity to see Waters play the material live. The great team at J&R Electronics on Park Row NYC made that possible by featuring him in one of their many in-store performance events on August 9, 2011.

Seated on the second floor stage behind a large white on white grand piano Waters treated attendees and pleasantly surprised lunch time shoppers to a half hour plus set of barrelhouse boogie-woogie in the style of Albert Ammons. Big Maceo and Amos Milburn. Playing with an unassuming facility and relaxed style that suggests a modern day Fats Domino, he alternates between studiously studying the keyboard to looking up and flashing a winning, mischievous, smile at no one in particular.

Dylan’s “Watching The River Flow” was in the repertoire for the afternoon, it’s the one tune on the tribute that all the Stones appear on, and apparently the one Dylan tune that the notoriously sardonic Stu liked. Along with album tracks, Ben treated the audience to an off-beat, post perestroika, take on Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” which kitchen-sinked everything from “Elenor Rigby” and “Live and Let Die” to Gershwin and balalaika rhythms and somehow came out the other end making total sense. After closing the set with a Jerry Lee Lewis number Ben signed CD’s for the appreciative audience. Bill German, author of the Stones memoir “Under Their Thumb”, was on hand and gifted Waters with a copy of the book. They chatted about the Stewart interview Bill did back in his teenage days as editor of the Beggar’s Banquet fanzine.

...

Skeleton Pete Says…
Ian Stewart was a proselytizer for the music he loved and Ben Waters continues to carry that torch. In the process he has become one amazing rock n roll pianist and would do the man himself proud. Next project for Ben; a tribute to Professor Longhair, with Ray Davies already onboard. Here’s hoping that we’ll get a chance to see him do his thing with a full Rocket 88 style band on this side of the Atlantic very soon.

Skeleton Pete

Wish I'd been there to shake Ben's hand and say a heartfelt thanks.

And ask when the ABC & D will be doing some US shows...

Wink
