He was very close to the snooker star Alex Higgins, who died on Saturday and issued a statement about how sad he was to hear of his death that was in the Sun today.

I'm wondering if he'll be in Belfast for Alex's funeral, which will probably take place in the next few days.

Maybe he'll confront, err, ask Ronnie about their recording endeavors in person.

A wake is more of a 'Catholic' tradition than an 'Irish' one, specifically. So, not in this case, I'd imagine. I think that stereotype is very exaggerated (if not fictional) anyway, in my experience.

Funeral service is next Monday in the city's main cathedral, so if Ronnie's here, I'll keep an eye on him. Smiley

More details about the Youngstown exhibition...

Guitarist Ronnie Wood’s work gets fall gig at the Butler

Published: Wed, July 28, 2010
By GUY D’ASTOLFO

...
Ronnie Wood, guitarist with the legendary rock group The Rolling Stones, paints a self-portrait.
An exhibition of his artwork opens Sept. 21 at the Butler Institute of American Art, Wick Avenue, Youngstown.

An exhibition of artwork by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood will open Sept. 21 at the Butler Institute of American Art and run through Nov. 21. Wood will attend an artist’s reception at the museum on opening day.

Titled “Ronnie Wood: Paintings, Drawings and Prints,” the exhibition will be the rocker-artist’s first at a major American museum.

Wood, 63, is famous as a musician, but his skill as a visual artist is not as well-known. Nevertheless, his art is lively and appealing, according to Louis Zona, chief curator and director of the Butler. Zona expects the exhibition will attract a lot of people to the museum.

“Ronnie Wood is a most-accomplished painter whose work demonstrates a wonderful knowledge of the medium, outstanding technical abilities and an extraordinarily creative mind,” he said.

Included in the Butler exhibition are 30 paintings, 22 pen-and-pencil drawings and seven mixed-media works.

...
Ronnie Wood

A close-up of a self-portrait of the musician. Wood, 63, has been painting and drawing since he was 12 and took formal art training in London.

Wood was born in Middlesex, England, into a musical and artistic family. He began painting and drawing at age 12 — before he took up the guitar — and received formal art training at Ealing College of Art in London.

Even after his musical career took off, Wood continued painting and drawing. He often depicted the musicians and celebrities with whom he associated, and his world tours, in vibrant portraits. He also uses family and close friends — as well as the landscape — as subjects.

“Every artist with a reputation has, generally speaking, explored their own world,” said Zona, in describing Wood’s subject matter. “I heard a painter once say he would never paint a portrait of somebody he did not know. Like Andrew Wyeth painted the landscape of his Pennsylvania home, Wood paints the landscape of rock.”

Zona was very impressed by one unique aspect of Wood’s work: pen-and-ink sketches of cartoons and caricatures. “They are very well done,” said Zona. “Some are reminiscent of 19th-century European cartooning. He’s got a special talent there.”

Although the Butler exhibition represents a milestone for Wood as an artist, his work has been widely exhibited. In 1996, he had a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, Sao Paulo, Brazil. He also has had numerous solo shows in North and South America, the Far East and Europe.

Wood’s musical career began in 1964 when he joined the rock band The Birds. In 1968, he joined The Jeff Beck Group, which split up in 1970. Wood, along with Rod Stewart, who was the band’s lead vocalist, then joined up with some former members of the Small Faces in a new group dubbed the Faces. Wood joined the Rolling Stones in 1975 and is still with the band.

The art exhibition at the Butler is part of the museum’s Influence on America Program, which features work by historic and contemporary artists who have been inspired by, or whose work has been informed by, American art. Actors Peter Falk and Jessica Lange and singer Tony Bennett also have been exhibited at the Bulter as part of the series.

A full-color catalog will be created to accompany the Wood exhibition, written by Zona and David Shirey, a dean of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and a former art critic for The New York Times. The exhibition and catalog are funded in part by the Mahoning County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Ohio Arts Council, City Printing Co., Atty. Michael Morley, Y-103 FM and WFMJ-TV 21.

Invitations to the opening reception at 8 p.m. Sept. 21 will be mailed to Butler members. Nonmembers can request an invitation after Aug. 10 by calling the Butler at 330-743-1107, ext. 210, or online at butlerart.com.

The article in the Guardian about Alex Higgins' funeral  says the $10,000 raised for Mr. Higgins dental work will be used toward the funeral on Monday (some of which Ronnie gave):

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jul/28/alex-higgins-funeral-belfast-snooker

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Belfast when the funeral of the former world snooker champion Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins is held on Monday.

A procession through Higgins's home city will take place before the service is held at St Anne's Church of Ireland cathedral at 11.30am.

The funeral will be followed by a private family service before Higgins – who won the world championship twice – is laid to rest at the Roselawn cemetery.

The arrangements are being made by his sisters, Jean Simpson and Anne Brown, who nursed him during his battle with the throat cancer with which he was diagnosed in 1997.

His son, Jordan, daughter, Lauren, and close friend and fellow snooker player Jimmy White have also been involved in the plans.

Higgins's former PR manager Will Robinson said: "There's still lots of work to be done between now and Monday.

"There will be some kind of procession before the funeral at Belfast cathedral, and a private service afterwards for family.

"We also expect celebrities to be coming from all over the world. I mean, Jimmy White flew home from Thailand when he heard the news."

Belfast police are being consulted about security and crowd safety, and final plans will be made with Higgins's family tomorrow.

The funeral will be paid for with £10,000 originally raised to pay for the snooker star to have teeth implants. His teeth had been decayed by radiotherapy treatment, leaving him unable to eat solid food.

The death of Higgins, who was world champion in 1972 and 1982, has dominated the news in Northern Ireland, and a book of condolences has been opened at Belfast city hall.

The 61-year-old was found in bed at his flat in Sandy Row, Belfast, late on Saturday afternoon. It is believed he had been dead for a number of days.
[~sad~]

He shot to fame after winning the world title at his first attempt, beating John Spencer 37-32 to become the youngest player to win the competition – a record since surpassed by Stephen Hendry.

He was nicknamed Hurricane for his quickfire playing style, which attracted new fans to the sport. However, he was a heavy smoker and drinker, and this decimated his health and form. He was also involved in some violent altercations with competition officials.

Although his illness and inability to eat solid food had weakened him, he had been optimistic about returning to professional snooker in recent months, and took part in a Snooker Legends event at the Crucible, Sheffield – home of the world championship – in April.

He’s Like a Rainbow: Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones to Have Art Show in Ohio

By DAVE ITZKOFF
July 28, 2010

They may be only the paintings and other artworks created by a well-known rock ‘n’ roll guitarist, but the Butler Institute of American Art likes them — enough to give Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones an eight-week exhibition there that the museum says is the first American show of Mr. Wood’s art.

The institute, in Youngstown, Ohio, said it would present the exhibition, “Ronnie Wood: Paintings, Drawings and Prints,” from Sept. 21 through Nov. 21. It will feature about 60 works by Mr. Wood, who also played with the Jeff Beck Group and the Faces before joining the Stones.

In a telephone interview, Dr. Louis A. Zona, executive director of the Butler Institute, said the show was the culmination of more than four years spent trying to persuade Mr. Wood to exhibit his work.

“I first saw his work on display in –” Dr. Zona said, “I forget where it was, it’s been such a long time.” (You know what they say: if you can remember it, you weren’t really there.)

He added that what impressed him about Mr. Wood’s work, which tends to depict his rock ‘n’ roll colleagues, including Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts, as well as fanciful takes on Rolling Stones albums like “Beggars Banquet,” was not the celebrity of the man who created them, but the quality of the art itself.

“He has done a number of cartoons,” Dr. Zona said, “spoofs on English culture, and they look like they were done by Daumier, just wonderful things. He’s very, very talented.”

Dr. Zona said Mr. Wood was expected to be in attendance for the show’s opening at a gathering of museum patrons, and that, in this instance, no extraordinary requests appeared in his tour rider.

“We’ve talked to his people, as they say,” Dr. Zona said. “There are certain things that celebrities require — a nice place to stay, etc., etc. But nothing out of the ordinary. He certainly wants to meet the people who are coming to see his art.”

Might any of those people include Mr. Wood’s equally illustrious bandmates?

“Well,” Dr. Zona said, “one can only hope, right?”

Works by Mr. Wood that will be featured in the exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art can be seen below.

The Secret Diary of Ronnie Wood

Ronnie Wood plans to publish a personal diary which he kept in the 1960s.

Ronnie Wood promises his 1965 diary will make for an 'astonishing' read.

Ronnie Wood has an answer for anyone who says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there. The Rolling Stone tells Mandrake that he has unearthed a journal which he wrote as a young rocker which recalls his daily life during the riotous decade in intricate, blush-making detail.

"I'd been rifling through some old stuff I had in the house and I found this diary that I kept in 1965," Wood, 63, told me when I bumped into him at Sadler's Wells. "There were still installments all the way up to December – I don't know how I kept it going all the way through the year."

Wood was then just a boy of 18 who had recently entered the music scene as a member of R&B band The Birds. "Some of it is just astonishing - I reckon I could publish the thing as it is," he said. "It's my personal diary so it is very honest."

Although Wood believes his journal will prove publishing dynamite, he is magnanimous about Keith Richards's forthcoming book Life which has reportedly got their fellow band member Sir Mick Jagger sweating. "Keith's book will do well, I'm sure. I mean, he is a very eloquent man. But my diary is interesting too though."

Mandrake can not help but affectionately recall the title of Wood's first solo record I've Got My Own Album to Do.

Remember to keep your nose to the grindstone, your shoulder to the wheel, your feet on the ground, your eye on the ball, your ear to the ground, your finger on the pulse, your head on your shoulders, the pedal to the metal, a song in your heart, your hand on the helm and the bull by the horns

In all seriousness, the "inspiration" by Ron Wood and Billy Preston credits that turned up later on Black and Blue are ridiculous... Why did it take them until Emotional Rescue -- or technically "Everything Is Turning to Gold," I suppose -- to regularly crack the Jagger/Richards byline?
