Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones Top VH1's '100 Greatest Music Artists of All Time' List

VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" Premieres Monday, September 6 at 10/9c

NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- VH1 goes back to its music roots and revisits the age-old question: "Who is the greatest music artist for all time?" Determined by a poll of well-known music artists and music experts in the industry, VH1 will reveal this definitive (and sure-to-be highly controversial) list declaring who is the greatest of the great. Hosted by Jim Shearer (VH1's "Top 20 Video Countdown"), the 4-night special, VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time," premieres Monday, September 6 at 10/9c with a 2-hour premiere.

This definitive countdown covers all genres of music – from rock to pop to rap to metal – to answer who is worthy to possess the title as "the greatest music artist of all time." Over the 200 musicians including Alicia Keys, Ozzy Osbourne, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Iggy Pop, Nas, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Geddy Lee (Rush), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Michael Diamond (Beastie Boys), Daryl Hall, John Oates, Noel Gallagher (Oasis), Gene Simmons (KISS), Adam Levine (Maroon Five), 50 Cent, Nelly Furtado, Mandy Moore, Carrie Underwood, Adam Clayton (U2) and many more voted on who they believe deserves this highly coveted title.

In 1998, VH1 launched the same list as the channel's first countdown special; however; much has changed since the dawn of the new millennium. VH1 puts this debate up for a vote again to see which rock pioneers still matter and which new acts rate in the age of download-to-own music and ever-changing pop culture. The countdown will include special, rarely-seen performance footage along with brand new, totally original interviews with music's most famous faces including interviews by Adele, Backstreet Boys, Brandy, Bret Michaels, Chris Daughtry, Hall & Oates, Keane, Ozzy Osbourne, Ray J, Sheryl Crow, Usher, Whitney Houston and many more.

VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" has changed since its first poll in 1998. Some notable changes include:

Michael Jackson was number 40 in the 1998 poll; however, in the current list Jackson is in the top 5.

Artists from the 1960s and 1970s are still relevant with today's artists. Younger musicians like Adam Levine, Jason Mraz, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood cast votes for classic acts like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder.

Contemporary artists like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Coldplay and Green Day are in the Top 100. However, current headliners Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lil' Wayne and The White Stripes failed to make the cut.

The poll reflects changing tastes. The list features over 30 artists who did not make the cut in 1998 including ABBA, Journey, Hall and Oates, Rush, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Sade and Cheap Trick.

The 1998 list included very few Hard Rock artists. This time, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Metallica, Judas Priest and Def Leppard made the list.

The 1998 list ignored Hip Hop entirely. Now Jay-Z, OutKast, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J and N.W.A. are in the top 100. However no hip hop artist broke the top 40. Jay-Z was highest at #47.

TheGreatest.VH1.com will have exclusive extras including interviews and commentary. Additionally, online visitors will be able to participate by using VH1's voting tool that allows users to pick their favorite artists, weigh in their opinions and socially broadcast their take on the list through Twitter.com and Facebook.com.

"VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time" List:

TOP 5, IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER

1. The Beatles

2. Bob Dylan

3. Michael Jackson

4. Led Zeppelin

5. Rolling Stones

Money CAN buy me love:
Girlfriend Nancy's in for a treat as Paul McCartney
raids Tiffany's (then moves on to a lingerie store)

Does Sir Paul McCartney have something to hide?

The former Beatle spent 45 minutes browsing jewellery shop Tiffany's - before moving on to a lingerie store.

Dressed down in checked shorts, t-shirt and Birkenstock-style sandals, Paul looked happy and relaxed on his annual trip to the Hamptons.

No wonder he headed back to girlfriend Nancy Shevell, who at 50 is 17 years his junior, with a spring in his step.

But was that Tiffany visit a hint that he hopes for long-tern happiness, too?

The couple have kept their courtship low-key.

They are rumoured to be planning to marry this year, but friends say they are yet to set a date.

The pair first met over 20 years ago on a family holiday, but they made headlines in 2007 when they were spotted together in the Hamptons several times in the same weekend.

Businesswoman Nancy was still married to lawyer Bruce Blakeman at the time.

The musician's designer daughter Stella, 38, had a rocky relationship with previous wife Heather Mills.

But Nancy has the family seal of approval and even former Beatle bandmate Ringo Starr approves.

'Paul is deliriously happy with Nancy and decided she was the woman he wanted to make his third wife,' a friend said.

'They clicked from the moment they first met eyes. She is the complete opposite to Heather Mills and is only interested in Paul the person, not Paul the Beatle.'

It seems Paul is equally delighted with his companion.

Sir Paul McCartney says Shirley Bassey was considered for James Bond theme

Singer Sir Paul McCartney has apparently revealed that he was not the expected singer of the James Bond theme 'Live And Let Die' but Dame Shirley Bassey.

He said that after he'd recorded the much-loved theme, producer Harry Saltzman expected Dame Shirley Bassey or someone else to sing it.

Sir Paul told MOJO magazine that he'd always wanted to write a Bond theme.

According to Macca, when Saltzman heard the track, he asked producer George Martin-who he planned on having sing the "finished" version-for his opinion.

"He said, 'That's a great demo but who are you thinking of getting to sing it?' He was thinking of Shirley Bassey," said Paul.

Paul McCartney guests on new song from Travis frontman Fran Healy: An EW exclusive stream

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But sometimes-like, say, when your guest bass player is a Beatle-it's worth talking about.

Fran Healy, leader of '90s Scot-rock champions Travis, called on old friend Macca to contribute to his first solo album, Wreckorder. McCartney agreed-and a grateful Healy, prid quo pro, subsequently promised to go vegetarian.

You can hear the result of their collaboration ("As It Comes" - Paul only on bass, no vocals).  "

Just not that into U2

The Moscow News, August 30, 2010
By: Ed Bentley

Music promoters are facing up to the realities of bringing international stars to Moscow, after much-hyped supergroup U2 became the latest top act to fail to sell out the city's Luzhniki Stadium.

Reports say the concert was only half full, attracting around 50,000 people despite tickets starting at 1,500 roubles ($49), relatively cheap for a top band in Moscow. While torrential rain put a damper on proceedings, some say the band that reapplied "for the job of best band in the world" are simply not that big.

Western mentality

"[U2 are] such a Western mentality, and melody and lyrics and everything related to the Western world," said Ed Ratnikov, founder of promoters TCI. "U2 were simply not established in Russia." Ratnikov said other performers from Deep Purple to Robbie Williams were more popular, but outdoor concerts are always at the mercy of the gods.

There was no sunshine for Michael Jackson as a stranger in Moscow in 1993, while neither The Rolling Stones in 1998 nor Madonna in 2006 got the hot stuff.

Although the massive Luzhniki Stadium has regularly failed to sell-out for the biggest acts, even smaller venues have struggled to bring in the punters.

Tickets are often more expensive in Russia than for the same band in the rest of Europe, which is a particular hardship given local salaries.

Expensive tickets

"Everyone understands that such a band and stage production cost a fortune, but still – something has to be done with ticket prices (or maybe the artist's fees for Russia)," Gregory Melnikov, a producer at Creative Force, wrote in an email. "Most Russians have an average salary less than $1,000 per month, and those who attend live concerts – mostly students, youngsters – have wages less than $500 per month."

While U2's 360 show had a range of effects, many concert goers feel other shows are simply not worth the money.

"I recently paid 2,500 roubles to watch Underworld muck about on their Macs," said Daniel Wickenden, a Moscow-based DJ. "I'm sure they were expensive to book but apart from some pretty ladies handing out free cigarettes, I didn't really feel like I'd witnessed an event."

Promoters put the extortionate cost down to a series of middlemen and other payments that all get passed on to the consumers.

"In our industry we have many come and go people – a certain kind of cowboy – who are trying to get this or that act," said Ratnikov. "They don't rely on the bases like economy, costs and what the best affordable ticket price without discomfort for fans is."

"They overpay artists and this ends up on the ticket price," he added.

For more professional promoters Ratnikov says there are people willing to offer "dodgy money" to give the act to someone else.

Satisfied fans

But while some have moaned about paying over the odds for Western acts, many U2 fans said it was a beautiful day. One fan posting on an expat forum said he was "completely blown away by the concert" and it was "well worth" the 3,000 roubles he paid.

TCI has also encountered problems with agreements with venues and bands. Limp Bizkit's forthcoming tour will see them play in Moscow in October, but it is unlikely to sell out. The rap-rock group was scheduled to release a new album but it is now due out after the show, leaving fans unsure whether they will hear any new material.

Smaller venues

Local DJs say promoters and punters can cut better deals at small venues, where they get a cut of the bar's takings and are full with the artists' friends. "More ‘serious' local clubbers go to smaller places, organised at cafes and suchlike, and this is where the ‘real' underground is in Moscow," said Wickenden. "They are almost always free to get into and, because they're small, they're full."

With the problems plaguing the industry, Melnikov of Creative Force said the U2 gig was a big success even though other bands are bigger and many see Bono's activism as a pretentious PR act.

Geoff Baker makes first appearance at Liverpool Beatles Convention
by Katie Hickox

Geoff Baker shared a few stories and insights Sunday, August 29th, about what it was like to have worked for more than 14 years as Paul McCartney's former publicist. He spoke before a packed audience during an interview with author and BBC Radio Merseyside host Spencer Leigh at the Adelphi Hotel as part of the Liverpool International Beatles Week 2010.

Baker revealed that he got his job working for Paul after he swore at him. He told the Daily Mail in May 2007, "I said, 'You're going to tear their f***ing heads off with that show.' Paul just laughed and said, 'Right. I'll see you around.' That was my interview. A few weeks later we were on tour." Last night he said was surprised to get the job after he had given Paul his honest opinion about a planned concert tour (1989-90 tour), the first in 13 years, which Paul was rehearsing, and which Geoff got to listen to in person.

Baker's six week publicist gig turned into 14 years before he got fired by Paul, when he mishandled a publicity event that went horribly wrong. He thought it was a good idea for Paul to meet American illusionist David Blaine to generate some publicity. David Blaine was at the time performing a stunt which saw him suspended naked in a glass box by the Thames river in central London. Blaine freaked out when Baker brought Paul by to meet him and caused Paul to turn his back on Blaine and jump into a waiting car. That event proved the beginning of the end for Geoff, who publicly apologized and confessed his poor judgment was the result of his pot smoking that day. While this event didn't result in Baker's getting the boot, it was the public coming out about being a pot smoker which Heather wasn't happy about, and it was Heather who perceived that Geoff was a "bad influence" on Paul.

Baker confessed he's had a hard time getting rehired as a publicist since his public firing. He said, "Once you've had a falling out with a colossus it's hard to pick up the pieces. I'm here today because Bill Heckle offered me 500 quid. I've been offered 150,000 pounds to do a tell all book on Paul but I've turned it down, and will continue to turn down offers like this." Paul's life is private and Geoff intends on keeping it that way.

But Geoff has been working on writing a new book, "One Fan's Tale," about a rock star from a fan's perspective, since he has been in the rock music business for many decades as not only a publicist but also a journalist. He emphasizes that the rock star he writes about is completely fictional and bears no resemblance in any way to Paul McCartney. In fact, he has been worried about this, and as a result, in his book he changed the rock star from straight to being secretly gay, and is still in the process of rewriting details about the rock star, to prevent anyone from thinking the rock star bears any similarity with Paul.

At the time of Linda McCartney's death, Paul and Geoff were criticized on the withholding of information about her illness and terminal diagnosis. Baker explained, "If you lie, so what? The odd mistruth here and there doesn't matter."

Remembering Linda, Baker said, "She was the epitome of nice. Linda was way ahead of us. Great mother, wife. Linda brought the rock 'n' roll spirit because she was so funky. She was something else. She left a great legacy with the veggie thing. Linda brought fun to it (the music business). She was much more rock 'n' roll than most people."

About his old boss, Paul McCartney, Baker said, "My greatest strength/weakness, was I never saw him as a 'Beatle', I just saw him as a 'bloke.'"

All in all, Geoff Baker did an amazing job managing the publicity for Paul McCartney in light of the tremendous pressures he faced every day, virtually 24 hours a day, dealing with the onslaught of the never ending press inquiries into every aspect of Paul's personal and professional life. In the end, the pressure took a toll on Geoff's life and he's picking up the pieces. Geoff, Beatles fans look forward to seeing more appearances from you at future Beatles conventions and festivals around the world.

" The Jew  "

" Scattered by God's avenging hand, afflicted and forlorn,
Sad wanderers from their pleasant Land, do Judah's children mourn;
and e'en in Christian countries, few breathe thoughts of pity for the Jew.

Yet listen, Gentile, do you love the Bible's precious page?
Then let your heart with kindness move to Israel's heritage;
who traced those lines of love for you?
Each sacred writer was a Jew.
And then as years and ages passed, and Nations rose and fell,
though clouds and darkness oft were cast o'er captive Israel
the oracles of God for you were kept in safety by the Jew.
And when the great Redeemer came for guilty man to bleed.
He did not take an angel's name, no, born of Abraham's seed,
Jesus, who gave His life for you -
the gentle Saviour - was a Jew.
And though His own received Him not, and turned in pride away,
whence is the Gentile's happier lot? Are you more just than they?
No! God in pity turned to you - have you no pity for the Jew?
Go then, and bend you knee to pray for Israel's ancient race;
ask the dear Saviour every day to call them by His grace.
Go, for a debt of love is due
from Christian Gentiles to the Jew.  "
