Comments:

The last time I was at a BD concert was in 1988, so I was excited about this
show. We were located in section 116 row D (stage right about 60-80' from the
stage, four rows off the floor). Mics aimed at the stage right speaker stacks,
resulted in a solid recording. Well I really enjoyed the show, and the crowd
around us was really well behaved. Enjoy!

Have any of you heard of the movie, My Own Love Song, which stars Rene Zellwiger, Forrest Whitaker and Nick Nolte?
My Own Love Song is a 2010 American/French road movie directed and written by Olivier Dahan and starring Renée Zellweger, Forest Whitaker, Madeline Zima and Nick Nolte. It premiered in Dahan's native France on April 7, 2010[1] and will premiere in the United States at the Tribeca Film Festival between April 21 to May 2, 2010.[2]

The soundtrack contains music written by Bob Dylan[1], including "Life is Hard" from his 2009 album Together Through Life. I think there might be a couple of songs Bob wrote for the movie...I downloaded it off of Demonoid a couple of days ago...will watch it over the weekend.

It's a big deal due to several factors (IMHO) the Warfield's history is particularly interesting to Bob (his people have been there...ie Vaudeville, Jolson, etc.), he is breaking the rules by not going through a ticket broker and also having us pay the old-fashioned way, cash only, and to have to be there to get in only hours before the show, well, no one does that anymore so it is very exciting.  He may be his own "special" guest, and I wouldn't care one wit if that happened.  Bob is the coolest guy on earth, and he's at another endless peak in his career.  I'd go if I could!

Does Robert Hunter live there?  Maybe he is coming to the show.

BTW, Has anyone read the Johnny interview in the latest RS mag?  He talks about Bob-aloo, as he likes to call him.  It is a HOOT!  Those two are peas in a pod.  No wonder they appeal to me so deeply.  Johnny says Bob a Hillbilly!  ROTFLMAO!  Great little read.

Now WHO is going to stand in line for the Warfield gig!  Wednesday is almost here!!!!!

peace n love,

Bob Dylan's The Witmark Demos Set for October 19 Release Along With First Re-Release of the Original Mono Recordings

Forty-Seven Original Demos Recorded For Dylan's Early Music Publishers Highlight First New Volume In Famed Bootleg Series Since 2008

Artist's First Eight Groundbreaking Albums Available In Limited Edition Box Set of Newly Mastered Mono Versions

Available For First Time On Compact Disc and 180-Gram Vinyl

NEW YORK, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records will release Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series Volume 9 – The Witmark Demos on Tuesday, October 19th, in conjunction with Columbia/Legacy's release of the artist's first eight long-playing albums in a box set titled Bob Dylan – The Original Mono Recordings.  Both sets have been long sought-after by collectors and fans worldwide, with The Witmark Demos seeing their first commercial release nearly five decades after they were first recorded, and The Original Mono Recordings returning to the marketplace for the first time ever on Compact Disc, as well as on fully analogue 180-gram vinyl.  Both The Bootleg Series Volume 9 - The Witmark Demos and Bob Dylan - The Original Mono Recordings are available for pre-order now at www.SonyMusicDigital.com/bobdylan and www.amazon.com.

The Witmark Demos features 47 Bob Dylan songs recorded by the artist – accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, harmonica and occasionally piano – for his first music publisher, Leeds Music, in January 1962, and for his second publisher, M. Witmark & Sons, between 1962 and 1964.  Listening to these recordings, one can trace Dylan's dramatic growth as a songwriter from early traditionally-styled songs like "Man On The Street" and "Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie" through the social commentary of "Blowin' In The Wind, "The Times They Are A Changin'" and "Masters Of War", and the groundbreaking lyrical genius of "Mr. Tambourine Man."  All of these songs, and all the others on The Witmark Demos, were written – and their subsequent demos recorded – before Bob Dylan turned 24 years old.

Among the many gems found on The Witmark Demos are 15 Bob Dylan songs that were recorded by the artist only for these sessions, and which have never been officially released to the public until now.  These include the plaintive "Ballad For A Friend," the civil rights era-inspired "Long Ago, Far Away" and "The Death Of Emmett Till," and the poignant "Guess I'm Doing Fine."

While many of these early songs on The Witmark Demos found their way onto Bob Dylan's own albums, much of the world's first exposure to them was through their recordings by others, including Peter, Paul and Mary and Stevie Wonder ("Blowin' In The Wind"), Judy Collins ("Tomorrow Is A Long Time") and The Byrds ("Mr Tambourine Man").  It's a testament to the lasting cultural impact of these songs that they have been covered by more than a thousand artists in the nearly fifty years since these demos were created.

The Witmark Demos also features a deluxe booklet featuring in-depth liner notes by noted music historian Colin Escott, as well as rare photographs of Bob Dylan captured during the same period as these early recordings.

The Original Mono Recordings is comprised of Bob Dylan's first eight long-playing albums, painstakingly reproduced from their first generation monaural mixes as the artist intended them to be heard:  One channel of powerful sound, both direct and immediate.  While stereo recordings had been available as early as the mid-1950s, mono was still the predominant – and often preferred – mode of recording and mixing by the top artists of the 1960s.  As a result, artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan devoted their attention to the mono mixes, leaving the stereo mixing process to studio engineers.

The Original Mono Recordings are accompanied by a deluxe booklet, featuring vintage photographs of Bob Dylan and an expansive essay from renowned author and critic – and longtime Dylan aficionado – Greil Marcus.  Each disc in the set comes in its own individual jacket which faithfully replicates the original album artwork, complete with labels and stickers that were found on the original 1960s releases.

These eight albums – spanning the artist's self-titled debut in March 1962, through John Wesley Harding released on December 27, 1967 – are universally regarded as some of the most important works in the history of recorded music.  Together with The Witmark Demos, they provide the public with a wide-ranging view of Bob Dylan's work during the 1960s, and chronicle his amazing evolution from fledgling songwriter to one of the world's most inventive and singular recording artists.

The complete track listing of The Bootleg Series Volume 9 – The Witmark Demos is as follows:

Maybe I'm missin' somethin' here, but on two occasions in that article, it mentions that the 2-CD set contains 47 songs - but the track listing mentions 48.

The list I gave on the previous page of whats in circulation has 49  :   40 Witmark demos and 9 Leeds Music demos.

Anyway, no matter, Bring it on!  Let's go get drunk

Ok, here's a guess.  Maybe my Johnny will be one of Bob-aloo's special guests.  Johnny has a great band, they could bring Miriam in for a song or two.  And Johnny has an accordion player in his band.....hum.

T-Bone guested with Johnny last summer in CA, and he's friends with Bob.  Maybe he'll show up.

Bob could also play his own "special guest" as one of his many selves.....Wink

I can't wait to see what he does.

BTW, There's 2 great shots of Bob in the latest RS.  He's wearing the famous buckle jacket, G.  Check it out!

'My Own Love Song' Can be viewed online here.

As for possible guests at The Warfield,  Messrs. Lesh, Weir and Young live in the Bay Area, and have been know to cover a Dylan song or ten.

In truth, besides Jack Frost, I doubt there'll be any...

Apparently The Warfield's initial web announcement about the date said simply "A Very Special Guest", and it was subsequently confirmed to be Dylan.

The Mono box is £75 on amazon.co.uk - which aint too bad for an 8-CD box.

The variations on Dylan's official store are, as per usual, US only.  Angry

I agree. These things tend to be built up to be something they're not. A bit like the London roundhouse gig last year on the eve of the release of 'Together Through Life' - which was no doubt a nice experience for the Sony hangers-on who got tickets but a bit less so for the hardcore fans who were expecting live premieres of a few of the new songs. They didnt get a single one.

This little gem - which has been around on bootleg for years - got an official (and cheap) release in the UK last week on Left Field Media. (it gets a legit release because it features a live radio broadcast originating in the US pre-1992).

Worth picking up for anyone who hasnt heard it. An at times hilarious interview with Cynthia Gooding (with an absolutely full-of-shit Dylan coming out with ridiculous tall tales about his background, such as him working for years with a carnival) and some cracking performances.

...

Bob Dylan - Folk Singer's Choice

Cynthia Gooding, a traditional folk singer, is best known for her time as a presenter on WBAI radio, hosting two shows, “Cynthia and Sensible” and “Folksinger’s Choice”, on which she interviewed Bob Dylan in 1962.
Gooding was the ideal person to put the often reticent Bob Dylan at ease. She was a willing listener and was able to engage Dylan through her considerable knowledge of folk music. She had met Dylan on several occasions previously, going back to 1959 when he attended a party after one of Gooding’s Minneapolis gigs. As often happened at these get-togethers, a guitar was passed around and Gooding was apparently suitably impressed and charmed by young Mr Dylan’s performance.
Although Gooding says in her Folksinger’s Choice interview that Dylan “is one of the quickest rises in folk music”, at the time this show was broadcast, probably on March 11, 1962, Dylan was still pretty much an unknown. His first album had not yet been released and he had only just begun writing his own songs. Also, Dylan was still reinventing his own fanciful past. A past that would supposedly include skipping school and working in a carnival for about six years when in actual fact, Dylan graduated from Hibbing High in June 1959 and, if he did work in a carnival at all, which is highly unlikely, it would have been more like six days than six years! However, far from spoiling the show, these tall tales only go to enhance one of the best early recordings we have of Bob Dylan.
The show, which is interspersed with chat between Gooding and Dylan, futures 11 songs, three of them newly minted early Dylan originals. Folksinger’s Choice contains the only known Dylan performances of ‘Smokestack Lightning’, ‘Hard Travelin’’ and ‘Roll On, John’ and features the first known outings of ‘The Death Of Emmett Till’ and ‘Standing On The Highway’. ‘Folksinger’s Choice’ is therefore an incredibly important early document.

Tracklist

  1.  (I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle (Hank Williams / Jimmy Davies)
  2.  Fixin’ To Die (Bukka White)
  3.  Smokestack Lightning (Burnett)
  4.  Hard Travelin’ (Woody Guthrie)
  5.  The Death Of Emmett Till (Dylan)
  6.  Standing On The Highway (Dylan)
  7.  Roll On, John (trad., arr. Bob Dylan)
  8.  Stealin’, Stealin’ (trad., arr. Memphis Jug Band)
  9.  Makes a Long Time Man Feel Bad (trad.)
10.  Baby Please Don’t Go (Big Joe Williams)
11.  Hard Times In New York Town (Dylan)

Ok.  Just talked to Al.  He said the line started forming a good 2 hours earlier than noon.  Al and Susan are about 20 people in.  The security is there and keeping an eye on the line and nothing more is happening at the moment.  I know Bob will be peeking to see how it looks at some point today.  He's too nosy not to check it out!  lol

xoxoxo,

Fans Line Up To See Bob Dylan SF Show
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―

Bob Dylan is continuing his tour throughout the Bay Area Wednesday night, playing a small show at the Warfield in San Francisco.

But there is a catch. All tickets are general admission and will be made available at the box office starting at 5:30 p.m. The concert is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Admission to the show is $60, cash only and ticket holders will have to enter the venue immediately at the time of purchase.

Those in line are also limited to one ticket per customer.

Goldenvoice, the promoter for the concert, said Dylan's people came to them with the idea and they thought it was worth trying out.

Dylan made his long-awaited return to the Monterey Fairgrounds on Saturday, was in Lake Tahoe on Sunday and played a sold out show at the Fox Theater in Oakland on Tuesday night.

The 70-year-old rock icon will be playing at the Warfield for the first time in nearly two decades.
