« on: Octubre 20, 2010, 12:04:00 pm »

« on: Octubre 20, 2010, 11:37:16 am »

No pasaría nada. No habría blues."

« on: Septiembre 07, 2010, 11:13:42 am »

Charlie Watts: "It went so fast ..."

Carlos Gomez - Le Journal du Dimanche
Monday, September 6, 2010

Charlie Watts, drummer for the Stones, Tuesday at the Duc des Lombards.

From the photos, he's easy to recognize among his cronies. He's the only one with white hair and a vague expression of the type that could suddenly burst into tears for no reason. A je ne sais quoi of melancholy in his posture, and also terribly English. This impression was confirmed visually, when we meet in his office in the old-fashioned populist district of Wimbledon - impeccable in his three-piece suit,  like a person from a novel by David Lodge. He wears thick leather comfortable shoes, a pinstriped purple shirt neatly buttoned, and something we thought forgotten, a tie clip.

If the 1960s have left their mark, some of that is thanks to Charlie Watts, 69 years old (two more than his pal Mick Jagger). Since 1963, he's been the drummer of the most tireless post-war band, responsible for part of the soundtrack of our lives: Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones!
Lately he's part of an exceptionally explosive quartet, formed by two pianists (Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters) and a bassist (his friend Dave Green). Together they play boogie-woogie, which reached its heyday in the 1940s, when all the big bands had boogie-woogie in their repertoire, even Count Basie. "It makes people dance. When you're a drummer, seeing that in a dance hall is the ultimate reward."

What makes a man nearly 70 years old, a member of a group of universal notoriety, and whose fortune is estimated at a minimum 80 million euros, commit to a series of concerts that will only see a few hundred fans of jazz in Paris? "Pleasure," he said with a coolness that could pass for a brownout. "Drumming is what I love most in the world."

The boogie-woogie genre is musically limited, right?
Not true. All the songs follow a fairly similar structure which comes from the blues and rock, influenced a lot with people like Fats Domino.  The interest is in the infectious energy that emerges when music is played by madmen like those I play with, believe me. You never know if the piece will last for two minutes or twenty-two.

At one time did you try to convince Mick Jagger to hire Miles Davis?
It was in the early 1980s when Miles returned to the forefront. We went to see him in his suite at the Ritz, New York, but then nothing. At the time, the only group that played plugged funk: Sly & the Family Stone. Then Mick wanted a saxophone and I told him the best. Sonny Rollins. With him, we made the album Tattoo You.

How did you come to jazz?
Blame it on my Uncle Charlie. He had 78s Claude Luther, Sydney Bechet ...

Your first drums?
I tinkered with the belly of an old banjo. After that my parents bought me a real set.

Your first trip to Paris in the late 1950s, was it for jazz?
I was, um, 18 years and I went to see the pianist Bud Powell at Saint-Germain-des-Pres, near the Two-Magots ... Pierre Michelot was on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums. I was a fan. I wanted to be like them ...

That was long before the Stones and you were still a graphic designer in an advertising agency ...
I played with various groups, I didn't stay with one in particular, I just did my job. It went so fast ...

Were your parents proud of you?
I don't know. They've never told me ... My mother even waited until I was 45 to finally admit how she had been disappointed when, twenty years earlier, I quit a well paid job (I went to an art school) for an uncertain career in music ... I couldn't believe my ears. That is, mothers ... Mick's mom was the same. It would have been less painful to see her son become a communist rather than a musician...

Your generation had many outstanding drummers. Keith Moon (The Who), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)…
Keith was a show in himself, and when he died, The Who were never the same. Whereas, if I had gone too, the Stones would've had less trouble replacing me. John Bonham, he had that sound that made him recognizable among thousands. But best of all, it's always Ginger Baker [drummer of Cream of Eric Clapton].

And Ringo Starr (The Beatles)?
Like me, his playing is simple and totally devoted to enhancing good songs. Moreover, those on which he was asked to play were so well-constructed that the work was ready made. Simplicity at this level is also a quality.

When will you see the Stones?
I might see Mick as early as next month. Otherwise, it'll be around Christmas, I think… And we will begin working on new songs, as usual ...

Do you feel excited?
The problem is that, these days, life outside the group resumes it's natural place. For the benefit of the family especially. And when the band knocks at the door again, it pains me to lose that place. The balance is even more complex when you reach a certain age .... Imagining touring again frightens me, "Why Japan, three weeks? Are you sure, guys?" At that point, I'd rather stay at home ...

The compromise would be to do the studio work, but be replaced for the tour?
Uh ... no. With all their drawbacks, both aspects are important ...

Is there anything the Stones have prevented you from doing?
Probably. Seeing my daughter grow up. She's 42 now ...

Probablemente. Ver a mi hija crecer. Ella tiene 42 ahora ...

The A, B, C & D of Boogie Woogie. From Sept. 7 to 11 (20h and 22h), the Duc des Lombards, 42 rue des Lombards, 75001 Paris.

On TSF Jazz Sebastien Vidal will present a special show live from the Duke, Wednesday, September 8 (19h), followed by a broadcast of the concert.

http://www.monstersandcritics.com/people/news/article_1556318.php/Ronnie-Wood-will-scrap-plans-to-re-form-The-Faces-if-Rolling-Stones-need-him

Ronnie Wood will reportedly discard plans to re-form band The Faces if there is a chance the Rolling Stones will tour or record new material.

The guitarist, 61, had previously said he wanted to put his old band back together for a new tour and include special guests such as Mick Hucknall and Glen Matlock.

However, pals say he will throw out the plan if it is agreed that the Rolling Stones will either tour or make a new album.

A pal said to UK newspaper Daily Express: 'Ronnie's really keen on the Faces reunion but he's a Stone first and foremost. If Mick decides the band are doing something, Ronnie will be on board immediately and other projects will have to wait.'

What about the future. Are you going to get back together and write more music?

I think that would be a very good idea. I've been writing quite a lot of music.

Is Keith keen to get the guitar out?

I'm sure he is. And I'll be seeing him next week, so I'm sure we'll get together and start doing that

« on: Diciembre 30, 2009, 06:19:55 am »

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/jagger-and-wood-to-discuss-stones-tour-in-new-year_1127090

JAGGER AND WOOD TO DISCUSS STONES TOUR IN NEW YEARSIR MICK JAGGER is to meet up with ROLLING STONES bandmate RONNIE WOOD in the New Year (10) to discuss whether the guitarist is well enough to rejoin the group for a tour, according to reports.
Wood, who is said to be battling an alcohol addiction, has endured a difficult year which saw him divorce his wife Jo last month (Nov09) after his affair with young Russian waitress Ekaterina Ivanova was exposed in the press.
He has since split from Ivanova after he was arrested earlier this month (02Dec09) for allegedly choking her during a heated argument outside a restaurant in Surrey, England.
Jagger is worried about his pal and plans to hold talks with Wood in January (10) over concerns he may not be able to embark on a planned Stones tour if he continues to drink heavily, according to Britain's Daily Express.
A source tells the newspaper, "Mick and Ronnie will talk things through in the New Year. They are old friends and Mick will obviously do everything he can to help him. But when it comes to the Stones, Mick has a real eye for detail and always ensures things run like clockwork. He'll need to be convinced that Ronnie is still up to the job. Hopefully everything will work out, as it would break Ronnie's heart if the Stones had to perform without him."
A representative for Jagger says, "Mick has been very supportive of Ronnie over the holidays."

Rolling Stones / " Los Stones vienen a Argentina en 2010" Bernard F
« on: Noviembre 11, 2009, 05:57:28 am »

http://www.criticadigital.com/impresa/index.php?secc=nota&nid=33778

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1214359/They-said-wouldnt--didnt-Ronnie-Wood-moves-love-nest-blazing-row-20-year-old-girlfriend.html#ixzz0RYBqRnNi

It's over: Ronnie Wood has parted ways with 20-year-old Ekaterina Ivanova after a 12-month romance

Sooner or later, the fun of pretending to be a teenager in the throes of young love was going to wear off for Ronnie Wood.

It has, admittedly, taken longer than everyone thought - more than a year, in fact.

When you're 20, a screaming bust-up in the middle of the night that results in the police turning up and clothes being lobbed out of the window can be viewed as affirmation of the intensity of one's passion.

When you're a 62-year-old grandad, it's just dull - and exhausting.

Wood's row with his 20-year-old girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanova in the early hours of Monday culminated, according to one neighbour, with the Russian's pronouncement: 'I'm going to kill myself. You are going to find me dead.'

Wood's response was apparently more prosaic: 'F*** off home, you slut.'

On Thursday night, Wood sent his bodyguard back to the North London apartment he has been sharing with Ekaterina, known as Katya, to collect his belongings.

Guitars, furniture and artwork were loaded into a white removal van and taken to the Rolling Stone's new address about five miles away from his former marital home in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey.

He arranged to rent the flat a few weeks ago, suggesting he has been planning an escape from Katya - whom he met in a Soho bar in July last year - for some time.

'He's bored of her, it's as simple as that,' says a friend. 'And he desperately misses his family.'

The location of Ronnie's new home suggests this is part of a well thought out plan to inveigle himself with his wife and family.

Yesterday Ronnie was believed to be at this new property. There has been no sign of Katya at the North London flat this week. Jo, meanwhile, spent yesterday at the BBC Television Centre in Wood Lane, West London, preparing for television stardom.

Ronnie's tiring of Katya comes at precisely the time that his estranged wife Jo has reached the completion of her 'journey' from long-suffering wife to sexy, single rock chick (second-generation, clean-living, impeccably green).

Last night she was set for her debut in the opening live show in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Packing up: Ronnie is believed to be moving to a new address near his former marital home in Kingston, south west London.

Stepping onto the dancefloor in her sequins and a handsome man on her arm - Brendan Cole, one of the show's more overtly heterosexual professional dancers - was to be a moment loaded with symbolism, the casting off the old for the new, and it can't have escaped Ronnie's notice.

Next week, he and the other members of the Rolling Stones are due to fly out by private jet to Ronnie's estate in County Kildare, Ireland, to record their latest album, which could take a couple of months.

According to a friend, Ronnie was keen to tie up things with Katya - i.e. get rid of her - before he left. At the same time, he wanted to set in motion his efforts to persuade Jo to take him back - perhaps have dinner, lay his cards on the table and then leave her to mull things over while he recorded the album and she focused on Strictly.

He certainly needed to get on with it, given that divorce proceedings are already underway.

So a dinner was arranged for this week, with the couple accompanied by their daughter Leah, her husband Jack Macdonald and their three-month-old daughter Maggie.

Ronnie mentioned the meeting to Katya. She took it badly. She insisted she go, too. He refused.

His intention to dine with Jo is believed to be the cause of the bust-up in the early hours of Monday, though it seems that if it hadn't been that, Wood might have contrived something else to start a row.

But will Jo take him back? Logic and common sense dictate that there is no way she would even contemplate it. After 31 years putting up with the strain of living with an alcoholic, he thanked her by running off with a girl barely out of her teens.

It is unthinkable that she should forgive him. But Jo is battling another force which is out of her control - and is more powerful than all the most valid reasons not to take him back. She loves him.

Clear out: Ronnie's relocation comes after he had a blazing row with Ekatrina earlier this week

She has spent most of her life with this man, raised four children with him (Jesse and Jamie from Ronnie and Jo's previous marriages and Leah and Tyrone together) and been part of the Rolling Stones circus all that time. She misses him.

'Jo is still in love with Ronnie, that is not the problem,' says a family friend of the couple.

'But how can she forgive him for the pain he has caused her and the family? They are talking again, but this is part of a very long process.

'It may be years before he is able to earn back the trust.'

Most of those close to Jo are vehemently opposed to a reconciliation.

'We don't want Ronnie to split up with this girl,' says one close family friend. 'If he's with her, he'll stay away from Jo.

'What Ronnie put Jo through was terrible, and I'm not just talking about his running off with a young girl. Before that it was a constant battle trying to keep him off the booze. We'd tried to hide the bottles from him, do everything we could, but it was no good.

'Jo's pulled herself together and got on with her life. She has real class. We don't want Ronnie back spoiling everything.

'Anyway, Jo won't take him back unless he gives up the drink - and there's no sign of that, is there?'

Ronnie's children were deeply angry with him at the pain he caused their mother.

As one family friend put it: 'The family have had a hellish year. They put on smiles and a front, but behind the scenes there has been real anguish.'

For the first few months after Ronnie left Jo for Katya, there was little, if any, contact between the Rolling Stone and his children.

At present, it is believed that Ronnie's sons remain angry with their father and are vehemently against a reconciliation.

He wants her back: Friends say Ronnie is attempting the reconcile with his wife Jo, seen here training for Strictly Come Dancing with dance partner
Brendan Cole yesterday

His daughter Leah, however, is believed to have softened towards him. She feels pity for him because of his alcoholism, and knows, too, that her mother still adores him.

'Despite everything, Leah can't bear the estrangement between her parents and would love them to be together again, or at least become close friends,' says a friend.

'And Jo is wavering because she loves Ronnie.'

On Wednesday, Leah and her baby daughter Maggie accompanied her father to a photoshoot at David Bailey's studio in Holborn, Central London.

Wood, an accomplished artist, has just designed a range of clothing for Liberty and has asked Leah to front the campaign.

According to one report, Katya had thought she was the perfect person to model the clothes, and Wood's refusal to let her has been another source of tension between the couple.

Indeed, over the past few months, Katya, who says she is not Russian but was actually born in a small republic bordering China called Kyrgyztan, has become rather demanding. What appealed to Ronnie at the outset was her air of innocence, her kookiness.

He believed she wanted him for himself, not because he was a Rolling Stone. And she not only let him drink, but she drank with him, unlike Jo, who was on at him all the time to stop.

As is the norm with many young women who hook up with world famous multimillionaires, Katya, who says she came to England as a child and grew up with her mother in London, says she had only the vaguest sense that he was a celebrity.

But of late, it seems, Katya has grown aware that her lover, however drunk and dishevelled he may be at times, is a man of considerable talent whose name still opens doors.

She liked the idea of being his muse and becoming famous in her own right.

But it now looks like Ronnie has different plans - and a different woman on his mind.

Is there any chance that over the next few weeks the Strictly cameras will home in on Ronnie sitting in the front row at the BBC Television Centre, cheering on his estranged wife?

It would be a gift for the show's producers, but does Jo want it?

It's a question she must ask herself a lot, but probably does not yet know the answer

The couple, who have been dating for about a year, were said to have rowed so loudly after an all-night party at that police were called to their £5 million North London home.

Ex-Stone rows with lover

The couple, who have been dating for about a year, were said to have rowed so loudly after an all-night party at that police were called to their £5 million North London home.

After the row, in the early hours of Monday morning, the Rolling Stones guitarist, 62, is reported to have kicked his 20-year-old lover out.

The couple allegedly began arguing after he told her of his plans to have dinner with his estranged 54 year-old wife Jo, daughter Leah and her baby girl Maggie Dylan.

Neighbours reportedly claimed that the pair was "screaming abuse at each other", with Miss Ivanova at one point heard yelling "I'm going to kill myself… you’re going to find me dead" after he told her she could not accompany him to dinner.

He is then reported to have shouted expletives back.

A source close to the family told the Daily Mail the dinner had been arranged in an attempt to reconcile differences in the family since Wood split from his wife, who is appearing on the upcoming Strictly Come Dancing series.

Miss Ivanova, who had been “simmering” about Wood meeting with his ex-wife, demanded to go, which he refused, the paper reported.

Nothing was said until after the wild drunken party on Sunday night where it “all came out spectacularly”.

During the argument, Wood apparently threw her clothes from the balcony and then out on to the street.

Police attended the row and a Scotland Yard spokesman said no “offences were alleged” and no arrests made.

It also emerged that Wood had recently arranged to rent a flat near his former matrimonial home in Kingston, South-West London, which he moved into on Tuesday before spending the night dining with his family, the paper reported.

A spokeswoman for Wood was not immediately available for comment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The title of Ronnie Wood's new album is NOT "More Good News", but "I Feel Like Playing".
Cover art by Ronnie - of course.

I don't think this has been posted here before, but I could be wrong. In that case, please excuse me. (I did a search here, but got no result.)

The title is also a message to his band mates, Mick, Keith and Charlie.
There's been meetings in London recently. Last week, for instance. They're discussing and planning their 50th anniversary tou

Watts Up With That?
(September 6, 2009) -- With a 2010 Stones tour possibly looming, the band members have been keeping their chops together by collaborating with other artists.
Charlie spent part of the summer drumming behind boogie-woogie pianists Ben Waters and Axel Zwingenberger. Unfortunately, as their jazz combo toured British theaters last week, a false rumor spread that Charlie was quitting the Stones. The story was cooked up by an Australian web site and caught on like wildfire. Charlie was forced to publicly deny the rumor and to state he ain't goin' nowhere -- he is still happily a member of the Rolling Stones.
Keith, who hopes to get the Stones in the studio by early next year, has himself been in the studio recently, laying down tracks with Jack White of the White Stripes. Keith took a vacation in Venice over the summer and seems eager to work again.
Mick, who was recently spotted in Tuscany and Elba, recorded a duet a few months back with chanteuse Joss Stone. It was for a project to benefit the United Nations and should see the light of day within the next few weeks.
Ronnie's been limbering up by guesting onstage with Pearl Jam and with his buddy Slash. The Pearl Jam jam took place on August 11 at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London (Ronnie helped them cover "All Along The Watchtower"), while the Slash-and-burn occurred June 30 at the Quart Festival in Kristiansand, Norway. Ronnie and the former Guns 'N Roser pounded out "Honky Tonk Women," "Stay With Me," "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," and "It's Only Rock 'N Roll."
As for a 2010 Stones tour, it's too early to tell. The Stones petitioned New York City for a 2010 event in Brooklyn's Prospect Park (probably a press conference, a la their 2002 "Licks" tour announcement in The Bronx's Van Cortlandt Park), but whether they follow through with it -- let alone a full tour -- remains to be seen.
In the meantime, you can cure your Stones jones with some upcoming CDs or with a new Stones-related book. Reissues of "Exile On Main Street" and "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out," both due in November, will feature previously unreleased bonus tracks. (Mick and Keith are personally handpicking the "Exile" outtakes. The "Ya-Ya's" extras will include five songs -- Prodigal Son, You Gotta Move, Under My Thumb, I'm Free, Satisfaction -- that were recorded at the band's 1969 Madison Square Garden shows.)
Meanwhile, already in bookstores is Under Their Thumb <http://www.billgerman.com>, a memoir from Beggars Banquet's own Bill German. It details his 17 years as the editor/publisher of the Stones' official newsletter, and features dozens of never-before-seen Stones photos. It's available at all Borders and Barnes & Noble stores or through Amazon.
