While we're waiting, if you're of a mind, the latest two official
lyric vids i think are excellent, both featuring dreary rainy
2023-appropriate cityscapes...

(definitely not tour weather. autumn album weather. blues weather.)

FYI, the visual references in this new "Rain" vid are mostly of Kyiv

So, with all that said, let me update my weather forecast...

There was, or at least seemed to be, a Plan A for early 2023.
The "viral" strategy. Andrew Watt, lots of guests, TikTok, the
strange PPV...

Obviously it didnt fly. Maybe it was just a decoy. Or, who knows,
maybe there was a Andrew Watt/Dua Lipa Miss-You-ish dance
track that tested poorly. So they pulled the plug. And moved on
to Plan B, the "core" strategy.

I'm not saying there won't be a lot of guests and modernist
sounds on many of the many bonus tracks, but I think the
core album is now going to be very bluesy.

Also, I think Ronnie has given us a major hint with his new
painting "The Stones in Cuba"

...

Yeah, I think I'm gonna get another one of my wishes, that they
become a complete band once again officially

Album front cover:

...

Album rear cover:

In other words...

If you can go crazy viral, you don't need Christmas to have healthy sales

If you can't, you do

hence the current delay

...

from an interview with Halsey...

...

internet-era release dates:
Blue & Lonesome     Dec 2
A Bigger Bang         Sep 5
Bridges to Babylon   Sep 29

So my original projected date for this album (before I got
sucked in by their "viral" fake-out), "soon after Labor Day",
seems likely to be right

Here's what U2 is doing with their new 40-song album.
12, 16, 17, 20 and 40 track versions in lots of different
colors...

https://www.ajournalofmusicalthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/U2-Songs-of-S...

I'm hoping the Stones do it different. I've checked the rules.
For it to count as the same album, you only need 5 tracks and
the title to be the same. So I'm hoping we get 5 very different
albums. A foundation of 5 mostly instrumental blues tracks plus
9 completely different vocal songs on each. Release one version
of the album every two weeks starting in September. Different
cover art. Different running order. Different vibe. 50 tracks total.
With the luxuriously boxed set in time for Christmas.

ADDENDUM: Even with all those versions, plus their Netflix special,
U2's album is projected to move only about 40 thousand units the
first week in the USA. Blue & Lonesome's first week USA 120K.
Selling music is no picnic these days.

I am actually over the whole "new album" concept...the market and industry model these days just doesn't support it, IMO. Yes, there are some bands who really lend themselves to an entire album (ie: Radiohead, Spiritualized, any live archive release ala Neil Young, Jerry Garcia/ Dead, Dylan, etc), and those are the exception with various others. The Stones, are not in that category for me.

I would be very happy if they (or any band I enjoy) would release 2 or 3 songs with a remix of a sort every few months for good measure...then wrap it all up as an album at some point. I dont need the entire package as most of the Stones albums since 1994 have been too large and quite dis-jointed, IMO.

_______________________________________

Howdy. The load of guest musicians that we keep hearing blurbs about is not confirmed, and was started by the fans (no word on that coming from The Stones or their camp all through).

I am not saying there wont be guest musicians .. but the whole thing about various artists being a part of this is something fabricated by the fans on message boards.

Paul McCartney does truly play bass (on one song). My guess is that song will be on the album but we do not know that for certain. Ringo is not a part of it / the album in any way as was initially reported or speculated. << This word is official and came from the musicians officials reps.

Is the album done? They were mixing in the Bahamas a few months ago. Mixing is the final stage (before mastering).

They have had various sessions and many many new turn's and recording sessions / stops all over the globe with this thing over the last 7-8 years. The Stones were supposedly trying to get the best result / 'get it right ... being great not just good' (this is coming from and according to Jagger himself from a couple years ago).

I wonder if it is done? It very well may be done and the way they finally want it?

Not sure when we will get it. A couple months ago Keith mentioned new music was coming / on the way at some point.

For what it is worth ... Here are at least the majority of the sessions that this album has been worked on that we know of .. there very well may be more as Charlie even candidly said in an interview that the December 2015 sessions in which they worked on brand new songs in which that also gave us Blue and Lonesome was definitely the 'second lot of sessions' for the new album and it was not actually the first.

I am sure they worked on it a bit at their homes in between etc between Covid and every here and there too. This album has had more work across the globe London, LA, Jamaica, New York City etc than any other album I can think of .. though most of the sessions range anywhere from a few days to a month and was not worked on for months on end as some albums have been in the past. They have been working it up and nipping away at it in segments and in between tours etc. for quite some time. There are also reports they have done various versions of songs etc. in trying things out or waiting for them to evolve etc and Ronnie said a few times that this album has been an ongoing work in progress in segments etc. There have also been reports they worked very hard on it at some points as a full band and on a lot of other junctures the stops was more just a trial end error or tweaking type of thing. One thing is for certain .. it has certainly been a work in progress over time as Ronnie stated.

At any rate this is what we know for sure but I would guess there is even more mini-sessions or even major sessions we are not yet privy to (I got this info below from Time is On Our Side Website and their Database):

December of 2015: 10 days .. with Blue and Lonesome Tracks for three of these days as well.

June 13-26 of 2016: New Stuff according to Charlie (B & L was overdubbed and mixed in April)

Febuary 2017 One Week (Mick and Keith Write Songs)

Febuary 2018: Mick and Keith (and Don Was) Work on New Songs together for two or three days in NYC

Febuary 2019: All Rolling Stones record in the studio together for 10 to 14 days

September 2020: Keith and Don Was work on songs at Germano (probably a few days)

October 2020: Keith Don Was and Steve Jordan work on next Stones album in NYC

May and June 2021: Mick Ron Wood and Charlie Watts work a tad / touch on new songs in London along with Tattoo You re-issue things .. Still it is confirmed they worked a bit on brand new material for the new album at these same sessions)

Mid Febuary 0f 2022: A week of writing songs with Keith - Mick - Matt Clifford and Steve Jordan in Jamaica

October-November Full band Recording in LA (Henson Studios) and Andrew Watt as the current or latest producer .. we are assuming.

Mid-to-late January 2023: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards do further work on the Rolling Stones'
next album at Sanctuary Studios in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Febuary 2023, Ben Waters overdubs piano on three new Rolling Stones songs for their new album with Producer Andrew Watt and Ron Wood present in London. <<< Thank you for this latest info 'Rev 20 Redlights' who posted it below for us.

Hey Dandy, thanks for the kind words over there in BV-land.

I'm not completely certain which news youre referring to, but if
its the Ben Waters thing, yeah, great, but whats most exciting
to me is that Mick and Keith have been working closely together
on this record. And as long as Mick and Keith are in agreement
about a track, then I'm fine with whoever's playing on it.

It's interesting that the producer went to London. Shows that he's much more involved than I initially thought. Could still mean just a track or two, but I've long thought they need to shake things up a bit in the production department. Great run with Don Was, who is a wonderful producer, but they need a new perspective.

It was time for a fresh perspective. Don Was is / was fab with them .. and he gave us one final WONDERFUL gift all on his own .. = Blue & Lonesome.

Perhaps he and Andrew Watt will share production credits in some regard.

It was time for a fresh perspective .. I agree .. initially I didn't see that coming (you never do with them) .. and DW was jus great for them since Voodoo Lounge IMO as well.

However now looking back for this one it was time to get something / someone new, fresh, exciting .. and it seems they are trying that.

Ronnie apparently has a small charity gig coming up tonite
or tomorrow nite, with Chanel Haynes i think. Probably
small-ish charity gigs will be a key part of the upcoming
album promotion

Yes well the way I get it is he (Andrew Watt) is at least the primary guy / producer for at least the second half of this album. With Jordan drumming seems he has been assigned to such area. Don Was handled all the previous material for this album with Charlie. We may get an album in two parts? I dunno. a Tattoo You category album but without the sound of characteristics of Tattoo You? Again that is jus an option / guess.

However it seems from blurbs that Andrew is not jus a guy to work on a few tracks with them. It seems they wanted someone to carry on with ...with a fresh perspective and to finish the other half (with Jordan). That guy surprisingly is Andrew Watt. Not saying he isnt good .. I just didnt see that coming is all.

The final result (with or without Don Was included for much of the material) should be interesting.

Amazingly that low-ball projection for U2 was pretty close.
46K units #5 on the charts. Without Christmas, it won't move
much more. Major flop.

Better in the UK? Depends on how you look at it. #1, but with
only 21K sold. Blue & Lonesome moved 105K its first week.

What the hell has happened to the UK albums market?
USA #1's still move 200-500K per week.

I know nobody. I don't even know anybody who knows anybody.

I just pretend like I'm sherlock holmes, taking small bits of
info and attempting to deduce grand things

its my brand, my thing, on various Stones fan forums for almost
30 years now. I've had some notable successes, but for me its
mostly just good fun.

Yezz I understand you were not / are not trying to give the impression that you have 'sources' or know the insiders etc.
However you were at the 100 Club with Ronnie and Ben Waters and you did catch wind and hear some blurbs from some or someone who may be more in the know than all of us (ie - album is finished / Mick's foot etc.).

Jus as you .. I am not saying that or this is 100% the situation etc . because as you noted.. it is simply what you caught from some folks there who 'may' ..or may not.. be in the know more than us.

I was simply asking if those same folks may have mentioned or alluded to the quality of the album / said material is all. Certainly not holding you to any of the info .. etc. I get all that Smiley

So did you hear anything on that while there?

Cheers
