ROCK N ROLL UNSEEN: Unearthed photos of biggest names in music revealed for first time UNSEEN photographs of some of the biggest names in rock and pop from yesteryear have been unearthed in a dusty attic. By PAUL JEEVES  Paul Berriff photographed a youthful Jimi Hendrix at the Leeds Odeon Theatre in 1967 Hundreds of film negatives capturing some of the music world’s best known superstars while they were still in their fresh-faced youth were discovered by a renowned photographer who had taken the long-forgotten black and white snaps while working as a trainee at the start of his career.
The photographs include an iconic image of a youthful Jimi Hendrix in his dressing room at the Leeds Odeon Theatre taken in April 1967.
There is also a snap of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger taken shortly before the band took to the stage of the Gaumont Theatre in Doncaster in 1964 and members of Pink Floyd recording their single Scarecrow at the famous Abbey Road studios in 1967.
Documentary-maker Paul Berriff, 71, previously found a stunning selection of 38 early career photos of The Beatles which he took as a club photographer working in Leeds at the age of 16. The Rolling Stones pictured before their performance in Doncaster in 1964 He found the now-iconic black and white pictures of the Fab Four whilst rifling through hundreds of negatives in a box in his attic.
But he has struck lucky again while trawling through another box of 800 negatives in the loft of his home near Northallerton, North Yorks.
He was stunned to find some 30 cellophane-wrapped negatives of 1960s artists Roy Orbison, Marianne Faithfull, The Hollies, The Searchers, as well as three photos of Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.
“I couldn’t believe it - it was the second time round,” he said. The Dave Clark Five pictured in the 1960s  “I do remember who I photographed and can remember because as a teenager this was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
“I was just beginning in the media myself as a junior press photographer and I used the pop groups as a way to practice my skills.”
The BAFTA-winning filmmaker is now selling three black and white stills of the rock legends and hopes to raise thousands of pounds at Cheffins auction house in Cambridge later this month.
Mr Berriff, who heard The Beatles dress rehearse their global hit ‘I want to hold your hand’ before its public debut in 1963, remembers snapping the legends but did not expect to find his lost snaps among hundreds of negatives stashed away in a long-forgotten box.
The three images from his Rock Legends collection have only been exhibited twice in the UK after being recovered in 2012 and will now go on sale on January 25.
These have been printed in limited edition runs of only 100 and are expected to fetch up to £1,000 each.
Cheffins’ director Martin Millard said: “Some of these pictures have never been seen by the public before and none of them have been offered for sale at auction.
“We hope that the cache of such limited prints, offered on the open market, will draw global interest from both music enthusiasts and those interested in 20th century photography.”
Mr Berriff, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list, began his photography career in 1963 on the Leeds-based Yorkshire Evening Post before becoming a BBC tv cameraman.
