+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

to waitering: ^^^Indeed!^^^ STEAMS!  Smiley

I really like both of these songs including all of the different versions -3 for Gotta Get a Grip & 2 for England Lost per YT. All of them "rock" in that new kind of way== (I'm showing my age here.)

"Grip's" rousing, energetic beat and exhortation "to get a grip" is having a good, energizing effect on me right now, which I've been needing. BADLY NEEDING.

Who knows..maybe if I keep playing this today I'll actually break my 3 year run of being exercised-blocked. Smiley (Now where did I put my stationary bike?)

As usual, Mick's lyrics still contain some sarcastic humor:

Grip-- "Intellectuals, shut your mouth!"

England may have lost but imo Jagger scores here.

I still can't see or hear anyone's posting of videos here nor can I post any-- still getting only the white, blank rectangles

I don't think this version of the version of England Lost has been posted here yet

Wow! Cut off my legs and call me "Shorty"!
There actually are two new songs!
Both have a "groove" thing going, rather than rocking.
As Keith would say, "Where's the Chuck Berry?"
Will have to listen a lot more to get a better feel.
Glad to have something new though!

With better planning time-wise and a better producer (Pharrel Williams, Trent Reznor) GGaG could have been a contender for the Song of Summer

The remixes are decent...I
really
like the Seeb remix

The video...whatta mess...can anyone explain wtf is happening in this story

'Rolling Stone' interview

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/mick-jagger-addresses-political-anxiety-o...

Mick Jagger Gets Political, Addresses U.K. 'Anxiety' on Two New Songs

‘’We obviously have a lot of problems," Rolling Stones singer says of "England Lost" and "Gotta Get a Grip." "So am I politically optimistic? … No"

By Jon Blistein

Mick Jagger unveiled two politically charged new songs, "England Lost" and "Get a Grip." The Rolling Stones singer said he penned the tracks in response to the "anxiety [and] unknowability of the changing political situation." He added, "We obviously have a lot of problems. So am I politically optimistic? … No."

"England Lost" boasts a bluesy breakbeat and finds Jagger recounting the story of a disappointing the real football match, which serves as an analogy for this "difficult moment in our history." He continued, "It's about the unknowability about where you are and the feeling of insecurity. That's how I was feeling when I was writing. It's obviously got a fair amount of humor because I don't like anything too on the nose but it's also got a sense of vulnerability of where we are as a country."

The noir-style video for "England Lost" follows a jittery businessman who discovers he's being followed after leaving work. A chase ensues as the man runs through London then out into the countryside where things get even weirder. The man is hit by a bicyclist, then a car, then dashes into the ocean where he's apprehended by two men who drag him ashore. The townspeople surround him and a little girl tells him flat out, "Pull yourself together."

"Gotta Get a Grip," is a grittier dance rock tune, though it too has a sinister edge. The video is set in an opulent nightclub where extravagance and excess reach a boiling point and explode into chaos while Jagger rails against everything from greed to xenophobia. "Everybody's stuffing their pockets, everybody's on tape," he sneers. "The news is all fake/ Let 'em eat chicken and let 'em eat steak/ Let 'em eat shit, let 'em eat cake."

Of the track, Jagger said, "The message I suppose is – despite all those things that are happening, you gotta get on with your own life, be yourself and attempt to create your own destiny."

Jagger said he wrote "Gotta Get A Grip" and "England Lost" in April and chose to release them as standalone tracks rather than waiting to put them on a full album. "It's always refreshing to get creative in a different fashion and I feel a slight throwback to a time when you could be a bit more free and easy by recording on the hoof and putting it out there immediately," he said. "I didn't want to wait until next year when these two tracks might lose any impact and mean nothing."

Jagger also spoke about his current musical tastes, noting he'll often make playlists filled with recommendations from young family members with old favorites. "I listen to R&B and pop and strange mixes of old and new and then like everyone I make my own random playlists," he said. "The last things I added to a list were Kendrick Lamar, Skepta, Mozart, Howlin’ Wolf, Tame Impala, obscure Prince tracks and classic soul stuff from The Valentine Brothers. I really like Kendrick Lamar; he’s also talking about discontent and he really nailed it. I thought his stuff, and what [British rapper] Skepta is doing, are very interesting and pretty much on the button.’" Skepta will appear on a "reimagined" version of "England Lost."

On first listen, I quite like the music on both of them. 'England Lost' more so. Reminds me of 'Rain Fall Down' a bit.

When I hear that riff on 'Gotta Get A Grip' though, I just wonder what it would sound like coming from Keith and co.

Not so fussed on the quality of the lyrics or even the singing, though.

Always good to hear Mick playing harmonica on anything.  He's fabulous. Carrying on where he left off on 'Blue & Lonesome'

Fair play to him at 74 for doing something contemporary and topical even if its hardly an example of an artist at the top of his game.

The opening lines of 'England Lost' are a wonderful example of Mick's self deprecating humour, referencing his reputation as a 'jinx' when following the England football team.  Grin

Havent heard the remixes yet.

The bit at the end - Englishman about to do something crazy, being asked 'where do you think you could go' and told to 'pull yourself together' by a child after saying 'I dont know what came over me' and then walking away whistling 'Land of Hope and Glory' is absolutely an artistic comment on Brexit.

Just listened to the Skepta remix. Certainly adds to it.

I think it's cool Jagger did something cool and experimental but I must say .. song wise.. they are fair at best. These are mostly ideas / grooves with loads of production in making songs out of them. They are not so much songs themselves .. At least not in the vane I know the guy can write songs in.

They won't do anything chart's wise or sell well at all ... so I must ask myself .. What's the point here with these two? Seem to be mere throw away side B grooves simply with souped up / loads of production in order to make actual releases out of them. I could be a lot more impressed .. ...

They feel thrilling, funny and dandy to me.
But while enjoying things viscerally, from the trousers upwards, it still seems possible to jabber out some thoughts.
Each verse of 'Gotta Get A Grip' takes a diff approach - the first: general semi-cliched impressions of the zeitgeist; 2nd verse: the feelings/attitudes of the bankery types (etc.) expressed in 'Rain Fall Do'; 3rd verse: attempts to get a grip in (or after) a love affair; then - after a smile (in the video) from Jemima Kirke (of 'Girls', who put a cute version of 'Foo' To Cry' on their soundtrack) - in verse 4 it goes off for a while with a rap rocket with assorted anxieties about the mo' world. The video appears in part to be about intoxication to deal with life, a la 'Might As Well Get Ju''. There's modern takes on Gimme Shelter' here and many other Jaggerian flavours.

'England Lost' is poss even more interesting, with elements of ''It Must Be Hull' (the Voltaire philosophy of cleaning up the back garden and not locking the door) and ecgoes of 'War Baby' in the video partularly and the film 'Enigma'. The character in the video appears to pass thru the gate of the Foreign Office (where the young Jogger once wanted to work). He's running thru Richmond Park, keen on the English countryside. Elsewhere he's regretting seeing less his ghirlfriends in Euro cities. The video seems to start off as a Ian Dury 'Jack Shit George'-esque tease yet understanding of the common folk.    ....?

And loads more here, surely?
Lovely.

Dear sirmoonie, I noticed Mick's English accent coming through more than usual it seems, especially when he speaks more than sings that sarcastically funny line right after singing "It wasn't much of a game. I got soaked" --
"I didn't want to come anyway".  Wink

I always love his sarcasm in lyrics.

New songs take a while to sink in but I generally like Mick's swing to a slightly grittier edge. Also, his political/social commentary is always insightful. And it is a rare song with him playing harp that is weak.
