Why was Hyde Park '69 edited so heavily?

On the DVD release of Hyde Park in '69, a lot seems to be missing. For example Sympathy for the Devil was about 18 minutes long there, with Keith playing an almost heavy metal lead, and most of that was cut -in fact of the original 18 minute version, on the DVD release it's only 9 minutes long.

Anyone know any reason why it was cut up so much and if there's anywhere to watch the uncut footage?

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

Yes, but is that official by any means? Because spending 100+ bucks for what's basically a bootleg quality release (in terms of video) isn't worth it to me. I don't want every band from Knebworth - just the Stones' performance.

Because it was recorded primarily as a documentary for a one hour slot on ITV (Granada Television).

They had 53 minutes allotted.  Giving up a third of that to a performance of one song would have had TV viewers switching off in their millions.

Is there no uncut original of it?

No. It was only ever broadcast as a 53-minute special called "The Stones In the Park" by Granada TV.

There have been subsequent dvd releases which have included 3 extra songs as bonus material, but thats it.  This was 1969 - it wasn't assembled with a view to an expanded home video release, because the concept simply didnt exist.

No doubt there's more footage lying in a vault somewhere and probably decaying, but considering the fact that this release has been reissued multiple times now you would imagine that if we were ever going to get much more of this show, we'd have done so by now.

It was only meant as a documentary. Can u imagine Granada dedicating a whole show to a London band? Tony Wilson would roll over in his grave; wait how old was he then? 10? U get my drift.
