Would Ry Cooder have been a better replacement than Mick Taylor?

I love Ry Cooder's work with Mick during '68-69, and his stuff on Sister Morphine. One of my big problems with the Stones' sound past 1969 is there is a distinct lack of "spookiness" - a distinct lack of that creepy sort of haunted blues sound. Think how eerie Midnight Rambler is for example. With Taylor, even though he was a blues player, they became just more of a "rock band" rather than a blues band. I'm wondering if I'm alone in feeling Ry would've been a better pick in the long run?

I mean listen to this piece from Performance. Imagine his style jiving with Keith's:

No. I dont think he was cut out for it. Musically - well it certainly would have been different and maybe rootsier and more interesting

Plus he didnt like the Stones - Keith in particular.

Saying that, he's still my favourite ever guitarist.

I guess that's what I would've loved about it - it would've been bluesier and rootsier. I feel with Taylor, as good as he was as a guitarist, the Stones lost a certain bluesy darkness and became much more arena rock n' roll than blues after he became fully integrated into the band. And while many love the '72-'73 shows, I feel those tours are the epitome of the Stones drifting from what made them unique. There were plenty of 70s bands with clearly defined rhythm and lead guitarists and that dynamic. Hearing Taylor rip a blistering solo over every song (live) kind of wore on me after a while. The approaches in 1967, 1969, and 1978 were the best livewise for me.

Absolutely not, some of The Best Stones albums (Sticky Fingers/Exile,etc) were made with Mick T.
Do you think Ry could have made these?

Why not? Exile barely features Mick Taylor except for side 4. It's mostly a Keith album.
There's nothing overly complex guitar wise on Sticky except for Sway. Moonlight Mile was started by Keith and is mostly a Jagger number.

Ry would have been a great guest on a few tracks perhaps....but would never have taken the stage to weave with Keith..course not that Taylor did in the sense Ronnie weaves..or waves!

Both are great as players but none of them would last too much with them as both were on complete different directions musically

Well, why not? they were made WITH Taylor - not by him.

They were already on a great run of form before the change in personnel.

They may have sounded a bit different. Maybe better, maybe not.

They were primarily great because Jagger and Richards were at their creative peak as songwriters and because they had a fantastic producer able to bring out the best in them.

Not quite. Its a Jagger song with some help by Taylor. Keith doesnt even play on it and any contribution he may have made to its genesis (and he seems to contradict himself if he contributed at all) was pretty minimal.
