The real cause for celebration is the fact that THIS WAS NOT THE END OF THE BAND'S CAREER...as many people have managed to pull themselves up from the unimaginable lowest point of their lives...so had the Stones...eventually...

I for one am grateful they did...even if 15 years later,  they would start to become their own tribute band...and do it as awesome as they have ever done before...

Lonesome and Blue proves they still have the pilot lite lit...

An anecdote: In the summer of 1987, I DJ'd a large, all-day backyard party (with a live band at night) in Ann Arbor, MI.  During the day, between Depeche Mode, Prince 12-inches, and a little Kinks, I slipped in Had It With You from Dirty Work.  These were the post-punk days when kids expressed themselves by wearing Peruvian hemp tops and hats, playing hacky-sack on the corner, and tying colorful braided-twine bracelets around their wrists and ankles.  A bunch of this type of kids ran up to my little booth enthusiastically and clamored to know what Stones record Had It With You was off of.  "The new one!" I said, holding up the cover for the next generation.  They looked disappointed.  But that was the only music question I got all day.

So, Chuck Leavell got a writing credit for "Back to Zero?"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Work_(The_Rolling_Stones_album)

I'd like to know how he managed that!

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

I think Dirty Work is really underrated. It's not a classic by any means but it's the last record that isn't slick. It's the last album that they were just doing what they wanted and not trying to be perfect.

Time for a " Throwback Monday "   :

" Man looks into the Abyss and sees the ' Dirty Work  ' album staring back up at him  . It is at that point that man finds his character and THAT is what keeps man out of the abyss   "   ( The Joey , March 1999 )  .

I'm listening to a great pressing I have of this album. Super clean and the sound quality is spot on.

One Hit to the Body is a great opening track.

Fight has some awesome guitars.

Harlem Shuffle is a groove fest.

Hold Back is terrible. Lousy lyrics. Uninspired musically. One of their WORST TUNES.

Too Rude is acceptable. The definitive version is the one the Winos did.

Side Two:

Winning Ugly: very slick production, but Charlie and Keith are good. Lyrics remind me of something a businessman would write, not something a rock star would write.

Back to Zero: Another one of their WORST TUNES ever. Read the lyrics and you'll agree.

Dirty Work: Trying too hard on this one. Not a good song at all, but better than the other two clunkers. More bad lyrics and they are SHOUTED.

Had It With You: the kind of song the Stones can whip up at anytime. Rocking' guitars, Charlie pounding away. The best song on side 2. Sounds good cranked.

Sleep Tonight: A fine track. Musically very strong, lyrically wanting for something better. This is where Keith got into the rut of doing the very slow ballad to close out albums from.

Key To The Highway: some fine piano from Stu!
