2017 New Orleans Jazz Festival: Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Maroon 5, Kings of Leon, Pitbull

BY KEITH SPERA | [email protected]  JAN 27, 2017

The 2017 New Orleans Jazz Festival features headliners Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Maroon 5, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Kings of Leon, Usher & The Roots, Harry Connick, Jr., Meghan Trainor, Lorde, Snoop Dogg, Alabama Shakes, Pitbull, Widespread Panic, the Trey Anastasio Band, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Earth, Wind & Fire, Wilco, Darius Rucker, Patti LaBelle, NAS with guests The Soul Rebels, Buddy Guy, The Meters, and George Benson.

They’ll join the hundreds of indigenous Louisiana musicians who make up the bulk of the festival’s roster at the Fair Grounds Race Course this spring.

The 48th edition of what is formally the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell is April 28-30 and May 4-7.

Stevie Wonder and Snoop Dogg will get a chance to make up for their rained out shows at the 2016 Jazz Fest. Wonder's only prior full set at Jazz Fest was in 2008.

Wilco, whose 2015 set was cut short by rain, also gets a do-over in 2017.

Petty and the Heartbreakers return to the Fair Grounds as part of the band’s 40th anniversary tour. Their only previous Jazz Fest gig was in 2012.

Pitbull returns only two years after he lit up the Congo Square Stage in 2015 with a widely lauded, high-energy set that drew on hip-hop, Latin music, choreography and his own eager-to-please personality.

In recent years the festival has generally featured one or two major pop acts. That role this year is filled by Meghan Trainor, best known for the global smash "All About That Bass," and Lorde, the young "Royals" singer who returns to the road in 2017 after a two-year break.

Kings of Leon are back after an absence of more than a decade. Maroon 5 was last at the fest in 2013, and headlined a sold-out Smoothie King Center in September 2016. In addition to "The Voice" judge Adam Levine, the band includes New Orleans native PJ Morton on keyboards.

Guitarist and singer Trey Anastasio is no stranger to Jazz Fest. He plugged in at the festival twice, in 1996 and 2014, with Phish, the Vermont jam band that cites New Orleans funk legends The Meters as a primary influence. He’ll return this year with his sprawling solo band, which includes a horn section.

Georgia-based jam band Widespread Panic is back for its usual Thursday slot at the Acura Stage. The band was last at the fest in 2015.

Contemporary R&B star Usher will be backed at the Fair Grounds by The Roots, the hip-hop house band from "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

Nas, a native of New York, ranks among the most critically acclaimed rappers in hip-hop. He has forged an occasional creative alliance with New Orleans brass band the Soul Rebels. The Soul Rebels are slated to back Nas onstage at Jazz Fest.

Native son Harry Connick Jr. performs at Jazz Fest every few years. 2017 will be one of those years.

Rhiannon Giddens, the potent singer, songwriter and banjoist who first made a name for herself with the folk revivalist band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, presided over a rapturously received set in the Blues Tent during the 2016 Jazz Fest. She’ll return to headline the Blues Tent in 2017.

Other confirmed acts include Aaron Neville, Corinne Bailey Rae, Irma Thomas, Elle King, Dr. John, Jonny Lang, Tower of Power, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, Amos Lee, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Big Freedia, Maze feat. Frankie Beverly, The Revivalists, Leon Bridges, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Dawes, Galactic, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, Blues Traveler, The Mavericks, Rhiannon Giddens, The Lone Bellow, Rebirth Brass Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Boney James, Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, Margo Price, JohnnySwim, Lake Street Dive, The Joey Alexander Trio, Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton, Richard Smallwood & Vision, Kermit Ruffins & the Barbeque Swingers, Anders Osborne, Tab Benoit, Sonny Landreth, Boyfriend, Chocolate Milk, Jon Cleary, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, Kenny Barron Trio, Davell Crawford, William  Bell, Walter “Wolfman” Washington & the Roadmasters, John Boutté, Deacon John and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux & the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians.

The Jazz Fest is owned by the non-profit New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. It is produced by Quint Davis’ Festival Productions Inc.-New Orleans and AEG Live, one of the nation’s largest live entertainment companies.

In 2016, the producers made several changes to the site and the festival’s regulations to better accommodate large crowds. Open-access bleachers were erected at the edges of the Acura Stage and Congo Square Stage fields. Tarps and chairs were banned from the dirt track that surrounds the infield, and the chair-free zones in front of the major stages were expanded.

Tickets for the 2017 New Orleans Jazz Fest are on sale now.

Advanced, early-bird, single-day tickets are $65 through February 14. The advanced ticket price will be $70 beginning on February 15.

The gate price ticket will be $80, an increase of $5 from 2016. Children’s tickets (ages 2 - 10) are $5, as they have been for years, and are available at the gate only.

Single-day tickets to Jazz Fest are on sale by specific weekend, with each ticket valid for a single day’s admittance.

Tickets are available at www.nojazzfest.com and www.ticketmaster.com, at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling (800) 745-3000. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Smoothie King

Additional service charges apply to tickets purchased through Ticketmaster.

A limited number of VIP ticket packages, which include access to reserved viewing areas and other amenities, are available at various price levels.

More information is available at http://www.nojazzfest.com/

Organizers undoubtedly hope that, unlike during the rain-plagued 2016 Jazz Fest, everyone on the list is able to actually perform as scheduled.
