The rock related Obituary Thread

Yes… 2016 was not a good year for rock because of the many great artists passing away but it was a great year for Stones fans: tour in Latin America including playing is some countries for the first time, live dates in the USA, many releases of material from the vaults (Totally Stripped, Stones in Mono), new live album and movie (Havana Moon), a great documentary Olé Olé Olé, a great  new studio album, a video with Kristen Stewart, singles, exhibitionism etc

I don’t want to be pessimistic but realistic, wait for a worse year in 2017 in terms of musicians passing, the life expectative in Europe and the USA is 78 years, and if the distribution is normal, many people in between 74 and 82 years will pass next year. So be prepared!

Fortunately, the list for 2017 does not have any of the Stones current members and we will have them rocking live and in the studio, releasing more new stuff and cool stuff from the vaults

This is a normal distribution curve, just imagine that 78 years old is the point in the middle

...

Wish you the best, be successful but specially be happy and make others happy you lovely B&B!

PS. Live your life to the extreme!

I agree, VooDoo.  2017 is going to suck, on many fronts.  It's time to batten down the hatches and hunker in for one FUCKED up year.  And I guarantee there will be no Rapture or return of J. Christ to save this stuff.  It's not in the cards. Fucking 2018 can't get here soon enough.

Mick Jagger's father, Basil, lived to be 93 years old.  Also, Mick Jagger eats healthy and exercises regularly.  He does not smoke or drink alcohol.  He is a happy person with a positive outlook on life!  In other words, he is going to live forever!  Yay!

I'm just trying to stay optimistic and hope with all my might that 2017 will be easier, more fun and with less appearances by the Grim Reaper. Jesus, it has to be. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Well, this is the sad thing about the arts and culture.  You grow up watching and listening to talented people older than you, maybe even just a couple years older by the time you're a teenager, and you say, "That's what I want to do," or at least you decide that you want to make their work a part of your experience forever.  Sometimes the last part happens whether you intend it to or not.  Then, when you yourself are on the downslope, those people start "returning to nature," as they say - though not always in natural or pleasant ways.  And you feel somewhat betrayed by life.  This happened a bit to my mother when she was in her last years.  Yet 2016 seemed rather heavy-handed as far as star mortality goes, so the sense of betrayal seems a bit less irrational.  When Bowie went, people of all ages seemed to rebel against the very idea of mortality, so great seemed his vitality.

My mother, who died at 70 in 2003, loved Prince in the 1980s, and insisted on my taking her to one of the Purple Rain tour shows.  (At which we saw plenty of older people of all races, accompanied by younger family.)  She'd have been unhappy if he had passed before her, being younger.   She loved Debbie Reynolds, too, and turned me on to Singin' in the Rain.

Myself, I've tried to look at reality, and have steeled my heart a bit toward waking up one day and reading the news - oh, boy - that one of the Stones has passed, or Dylan.  But Bowie in the New Year was a sucker punch, being that the seriousness of his condition was not widely known.  Couple that with Prince by misadventure, and....  In some ways, all of us waking up to read about Bob Dylan's Nobel win was a way of seeing death cheated in this awful year.  But remember...in places like Aleppo, they don't have time for the luxury of such funereal pleasures.

I'm pretty sure Mick enjoys a glass of wine in moderation.

I agree, VooDoo.  2017 is going to suck, on many fronts.  It's time to batten down the hatches and hunker in for one FUCKED up year.  And I guarantee there will be no Rapture or return of J. Christ to save this stuff.  It's not in the cards. Fucking 2018 can't get here soon enough.

moondrop, believe that shit if you must. I refuse to accept that. 2017 best ever!!

I repeat myself... The whole thread or just Pako Gerrte's forecast?

Death is real and each second it is a second closer, so my guess is that 2017 will have more farewells of rock stars and growing each year until 2023 and then less and less but the highest will be around 2023

Sorry but that’s a rule of life and life is a bitch or a bastard

thanks voo. my uncle was a huge music fan from a different generation. he loved jazz used to travel to ny among many other places from switzerland to listen in clubs which are all gone all now. he also spent alot of time in Cambrils which he considered his second hometown and where i have a picture of him in his garden. he loved music, travel, good food and drinking. it runs in the family. his son in his spare time also was in a band.

it don't mean a thing

Not RnR but Robert Osborne from TCM deserves a mention.  Passed March 6th. Master of Classic Movies and a class act.  When I only had basic cable TCM was my commercial free go to channel...loved that guy  RIP!

Well... I see your point but this is to commemorate the LIFE of those who are passing and there are much more to come.

At least most of these are old and they all left a lot of his Works for us to enjoy, no more "27 Club" etc

Every morning I open the papers and say, O bitch, this be thine obituary.

When I was little, my Polish-American great-aunt thought obituary was a dirty word.

Today I suspect it's geographical: the Obituary Peninsula.  The Obituary Islands.

Molto obituario, signore!

Bruce Hampton, 'granddaddy of the jam scene,' dies after gig

By Lisa Respers France and Stephanie Gallman, CNN
Updated 1936 GMT (0336 HKT) May 2, 2017

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/05/02/entertainment/bruce-hampton-obit/

Atlanta (CNN) — Death came for Bruce Hampton as he celebrated his 70th birthday doing what he did best -- jamming on stage.

Hampton, known as the "granddaddy of the jam scene," collapsed on stage while rocking out Monday night during a concert held in his honor in Atlanta.

...

His agent, Micah Davidson of Midwood Entertainment, confirmed to CNN that the musician died. He gave no further details.

Warren Haynes, the Allman Brothers Band guitarist who was on stage performing with Hampton, posted a statement Tuesday on his official Facebook page asking for privacy for Hampton's loved ones.

"After collapsing on stage surrounded by his friends, family, fans and the people he loved, Col. Bruce Hampton has passed away," the statement said. "The family is asking for respect and privacy at this difficult time."

The all-star event, held at Atlanta's Fox Theatre, was billed as "Hampton 70: A Celebration of Col. Bruce Hampton."

The stage was packed with performers -- including Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Phish drummer Jon Fishman and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell -- when the seasoned musician appeared to take a knee, then lay down as 14-year-old guitarist Brandon "Taz" Niederauer shredded chords on one of Hampton's favorite songs, "Turn on Your Love Light."

Some in the audience thought the guitarist's actions were a part of the show.

Those on stage continued to perform. They included actor Billy Bob Thornton, who cast Hampton in a small role in his critically acclaimed 1996 film "Sling Blade," Blues Traveler frontman John Popper, and Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks of the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Then people came out from the wings and carried Hampton off stage. The song abruptly ended

An ambulance arrived shortly thereafter and took Hampton away as dozens of fans watched quietly.

Born and raised Gustav Valentine Berglund III in New York City, Hampton was beloved in the music industry as a founding member of the rock blues quintet the Hampton Grease Band, which got its start in Atlanta.

While the band released only one album, "Music to Eat" in 1971, it developed a bit of a cult following, and Hampton went on earn a reputation as one of the best jam musicians in the industry.

He was the subject of a 2012 documentary, "Basically Frightened: The Musical Madness of Colonel Bruce Hampton."

Hampton he gave an interview in 2015 to the site Live For Live Music in preparation for his reunion tour with the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

He spoke of his extensive career, which stretched from playing in bands in the 1970s to doing voice-over work in commercials for brands such as Popeyes fried chicken and Motel 6.

"I was a lasso instructor and a lariat importer, and they were all weird, fleeting jobs," he told the site. "I've been fortunate to do music all my life, and I've done enough acting to make it fun."

Fans, including a few famous ones, grieved Hampton on Tuesday.

"So so sad to say goodbye to the great & wondrous Col. Bruce Hampton," Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes and Chris Robinson Brotherhood told CNN in a statement. "The music world lost one of a kind last night, a true original, a man who heard the light! God speed Col. Bruce, we miss you."

Added longtime friend Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers, "Just by example, he taught us to challenge our ideas about music and what it's for. Bruce was equal parts prankster and mystic. He was serious about music, but also taught us not to take ourselves too seriously. He was a one of a kind human. What an honor to be with him on his final night."

Vocalist and saxophonist Karl Denson called Hampton "the poet of some undefined movement that all the artists came to for wisdom and clarity."

"Once you connected with him, you felt inspired not to be jive, to know what was important and take chances," Denson said in a statement. "Most of all, he made us supremely happy."

Leavell, the keyboardist who tours with The Rolling Stones and was part of the Allman Brothers Band in the 1970s, said Hampton died doing what he loved.

"A poetic exit," said. "And I'm sure if he had written the script himself, that would've been the last page of the last chapter."

CNN's Jason Morris contributed to this report.

Supposedly good friends with Chris Cornell, and died in the same way on Cornell's birthday. Weird.

Oh no! There goes Tokyo!!

Haruo Nakajima, the First Actor to Play Godzilla, Dies at 88

HONG KONG — Haruo Nakajima, the Japanese actor who played the movie monster Godzilla in a dozen films and whose booming steps in a 200-pound rubber suit sent the denizens of Tokyo running into cinematic history, died on Monday. He was 88.

Mr. Nakajima died of pneumonia, according to his daughter, Sonoe Nakajima.

In 1954, Mr. Nakajima, then a 25-year-old stunt actor who had previously appeared in just four movies, was cast in what are perhaps Japan’s two most famous films of that era. In Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece, “Seven Samurai,” Mr. Nakajima had only a bit part. But in “Godzilla,” he played the titular character: a gigantic, irradiated lizard whose mutated form and destructive power symbolized the potency of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Nakajima would eventually don the heavy rubber monster costume 12 times from 1954 to 1972, turning Japan’s postwar nuclear anxieties into an international phenomenon.

In an era before computer-generated effects, the international success of Godzilla kicked off Japan’s golden age of tokusatsu, or “special-filming” movies, in which rubber-costumed actors typically destroyed scale-model sets.

“We had to improvise, and make it all look real on screen,” Mr. Nakajima told The New York Times in a 2013 interview.

In that interview, Mr. Nakajima recalled Godzilla’s creator, Eiji Tsuburaya, struggling amid Japan’s postwar shortages and rationing to find enough rubber and latex to construct the costume.

“You don’t learn this from a textbook but by doing,” Mr. Nakajima said of those early days. “There is no chance to learn now.”

At the end of a day of shooting, Mr. Nakajima would later recall, he typically sweat so much inside the hot, heavy suit and beneath the soundstage’s bright lights that he was able to wring enough sweat from his undershirt to fill half a bucket.

To perfect the monster’s notoriously destructive gait, Mr. Nakajima spent hours at the zoo, studying how elephants and bears walked. In interviews, the actor said that he had wanted to make sure the monster was believable and to enable viewers to connect with it on an emotional level.

Mr. Nakajima was born in Yamagata, Japan, on New Year’s Day in 1929. He was 16 when Japan surrendered to the Allies at the end of World War II and appeared in his first credited role in “Sword for Hire” in 1952, when he was 23.

As a contract actor for the Japanese studio Toho, Mr. Nakajima starred in dozens of other monster movies, including as King Kong in the 1967 film version.

He retired from acting in 1973 and is reported to have briefly taken a job at the bowling alley on the Toho studio lot. Beginning in the 1990s, he made frequent appearances at conventions for comic book and movie fans.

“Godzilla,” the first film in the franchise, was released nine years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and was a not-so-thinly-veiled fable about the dangers of nuclear weapons.

“One might regard him as a symbol of Japanese hate for the destruction that came out of nowhere and descended upon Hiroshima one pleasant August morn,” The Times wrote in a 1956 review of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” the English-dubbed version of the film released in North America. “But we assure you that the quality of the picture and the childishness of the whole idea do not indicate such a calculation. Godzilla was simply meant to scare people.”

Mr. Nakajima was the first iteration of Godzilla to scare people, but not the last. Toho produced 27 more Godzilla films after Mr. Nakajima hung up his rubber suit in 1972. Since then, Hollywood has produced three “Godzilla” movies. The next in the franchise will star Ken Watanabe and is scheduled for release in 2019.

Yes it sucks

I have the "tago mago" and the "ege bamyasi" albums since they came out, never bought another but recorded in tapes many others... later albums were not good in my opinion, too much for me. Quit buying; just recently I bought some new editions of unreleased stuff from that era, great band and great musicians

I am absolutely shocked by his sudden death.  This is a tremendous loss for rock music.  Tom Petty was an American treasure.   RIP Mr. Tom Petty and thank you for the music.

Mark E Smith: British rock's cult hero

By Ian Youngs
Arts & entertainment reporter

...
Mark E Smith was regarded as a poet and a flawed genius by his devoted fans

Mark E Smith, the snarling singer and single-minded leader of Manchester post-punk group The Fall, was a rock hero whose drinking and fighting - as well as his ragged but rare musical artistry - became the stuff of legend.

Over the past 40 years, great bands have come and gone. Musical trends have waxed and waned.

But The Fall - basically Mark E Smith and whoever he hadn't fallen out with at the time - remained belligerently immoveable as the unfashionable but unshrinking mob in the shadows of the music scene.

In that time, he hired and fired more than 60 bandmates and released 30 albums of music that normally featured frayed, repetitive guitars and Smith's caustic stream of semi-consciousness.

His pronounced sing-slur made him unlike any other frontman, and he inspired devotion among fans who were drawn to his singular presence and rambling poetry.

...
Mark E Smith with then-wife and bandmate Brix on The Tube in 1985

Mark Edward Smith grew up with a love of literature and named his band after an Albert Camus novel.

He had been a shipping clerk at Salford docks but was inspired to take music seriously after watching a now-legendary gig by The Sex Pistols in Manchester.

"When I first saw The Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in 76, I thought, my lot are not as bad as that," he wrote in his 2008 autobiography Renegade. "We're better."

He paid for his band's rehearsal space by playing pool and doing tarot readings, and their debut album, Live at the Witch Trials, came out in 1979.

It got good reviews, but Smith thought it had been misunderstood. "They thought it was too serious, overlooking the humour of it all," he said. "That's the story of my life, actually."

...

He says he turned down deals with record labels Virgin and Factory, but found a home - for a few years - with indie stable Rough Trade.

He also found a champion in BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who called The Fall "the band against which all others are judged". When all the band's Peel Sessions were compiled and released as a box set in 2004, they ran to seven hours.

Between 1984 and 2004, 27 songs by The Fall reached the top 100 of the UK singles chart.

Only two went higher than number 40, though, and they were both covers - There's A Ghost In My House and Victoria.

...
Smith's third wife Elena Poulou was in the band from 2002-16

But some of their songs reached mainstream consciousness, such as 1988's Hit The North, whose howl of pride is about as catchy as The Fall got and made it a sort of national anthem for the north of England, being played at the home of Smith's beloved Manchester City FC.

Another track, Theme From Sparta FC, was used to introduce the football scores on BBC television - leading Smith to be invited to read the classified results in his distinctive drawl one Saturday afternoon.

And Hip Priest (with the repeated wailed lyric "he-ee-ee's not appreciated") was used in the soundtrack of The Silence of the Lambs.

But perhaps more famous than any of their songs is the fact that Smith got through so many bandmates over the years.

...
"If it's me and yer granny on bongos, it's The Fall"

He was the only constant member and Wikipedia has an intricate graph showing the tenures of all the musicians who came and went over four decades.

Explaining that it mattered little who else was in the group, he once said: "If it's me and yer granny on bongos, it's The Fall."

The past band members included Marc Riley, who went on to become a BBC 6 Music DJ - who Smith sacked on his wedding day.

Smith was an autocrat as well as an auteur. "It's a bit like a football team," he once said of his management style. "Every so often you have to get rid of the centre-forward."

The singer said he got rid of Riley because he didn't like the fact Riley was questioning the writing credits, or the fact he danced to Deep Purple in a nightclub while on an Australia tour in 1982.

He told him: "Get in the hotel, and stay there till I tell you. You don't need to be dancing to Smoke on the Water." A fist fight ensued.

Riley told the Guardian he was sacked for hitting Smith back after the singer punished the band for an "average" gig by slapping each musician in turn.

...
The Fall released almost a studio album a year on average

At an infamous show in New York in 1998, there was another "onstage disagreement" - as Smith put it - with the band.

"They all started throwing punches," he wrote in his book. "But I gave them a few left hooks back. They got worse than they gave me." The singer ended the night in jail.

Even if he did end up on the losing side, that didn't alter the fact that, in his eyes, whatever the quarrel, he was always right.

So he didn't see anything wrong with his lifelong heavy drinking.

"If anybody says to me I've got a problem with the drink, I tell them I do have a problem - like where to get it from after 11 o'clock," he once said.

"I've stopped drinking anyway - stopped half an hour ago."

There has never been anyone quite like Mark E Smith in British music, and there never will be again.

I found The Fall utterly unlistenable but Smith was a wonderfully unique hilarious curmudgeon.  I just cant help but like someone so arrogant that he dismissed Bob Dylan by claiming that 'he can't write for toffee'

Belfast punk impresario Terri Hooley shared this surreal story by the NME's Stuart Bailie on facebook earlier about an incident a few years ago when a Fall gig in Belfast got cancelled at the eleventh hour - a night when about 200 people tried to tip the tour bus over after the show was called off and the venue manager handed Smith a mop and bucket and ordered him to clean up his dressing room after he'd trashed it by smashing a bottle of tomato ketchup against the wall....

WHAT A CORK-UP!: TOUR FALLS APART

The immediate future of THE FALL is in doubt after MARK E SMITH sacked his band following a spectacular, drink-fuelled bust-up in Belfast last Saturday evening (November 8). The band's gig at the Empire Music Hall that night was subsequently cancelled mere minutes before stagetime. Uncertainty also surrounds the 15 outstanding dates on the band's current UK tour.

Smith reportedly arrived at Belfast's Empire in poor spirits. The venue's stage manager, Mark Erskine, told NME: "He was giving the band hell. He walked off the tourbus, straight onto the stage and started kicking stuff about and decking mikes. He sacked the band and they went." Smith also upset the staff of the venue by flinging a bottle of ketchup against a backstage door. The manager, Mike Gatt, gave Smith a mop and ordered him to clean it up.

In an attempt to try to calm the singer, staff at the venue rang Terry Hooley, founder of Belfast's Good Vibrations record label. Hooley promoted The Fall's early gigs in the city and has remained in touch with Smith ever since.
According to Hooley, Smith had been drinking champagne and was difficult to reason with. At one stage, Hooley grabbed the singer by the neck to restrain him. The singer thought he was about to get punched, and asked if he could remove his false teeth first. Hooley removed his own glass eye instead. "I'm not gonna hit you," Hooley insisted.

Smith then hit upon the idea of going onstage and playing an a cappella set of Beach Boys covers with Hooley and another friend. Smith called the Empire the next day, looking for his passport and a collection of demo tapes. He told the manager that he would try to make amends at a later date. A Fall spokesman told NME: "This has surprised us as much as it probably surprised Mark. This might end up being resolved although I'm sure he did sack them at the time. As long as he regains his passport, the tour will continue in typically maverick Fall fashion, even as a solo acoustic show!"

Robert Arthur, Man Behind the Music on 'The Ed Sullivan Show,' Dies at 89

by Mike Barnes

...
Courtesy of Robert Arthur

From left: Robert Arthur, producer Bob Precht and Ed Sullivan in 1968 on the set of the variety show.

The songwriter-composer worked with all the artists, including The Rolling Stones, and adjusted the lyrics to "Let's Spend the Night Together."

Robert Arthur, the longtime music coordinator on The Ed Sullivan Show who famously tweaked the lyrics to "Let's Spend the Night Together" so The Rolling Stones could perform in 1967 on the iconic CBS variety show, has died. He was 89.

Arthur died Jan. 21 at his Topanga Canyon home in Los Angeles, his wife, Jeanne, told The Hollywood Reporter.

A songwriter and composer, Arthur worked with newspaper columnist-turned-TV host Ed Sullivan from 1952, when he was hired to assist the Toast of the Town music director, until The Ed Sullivan Show (thus renamed in 1955) departed the airwaves for good on June 6, 1971.

As a vital behind-the-scenes player on the Sunday night staple, Arthur handled all the music for Sullivan, arranging and composing songs for and working with such guests as The Beatles, Judy Garland, Sly Stone, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, Kate Smith, Count Basie, Perry Como, Bill Haley & His Comets, Harry James, Diana Ross, Itzhak Perlman, Edith Piaf, The Platters, The Vienna Boys' Choir, Connie Francis, Bo Diddley, Mitzi Gaynor — and that's just a sample.

"Ed's main interest was in booking the show and finding the acts. … It was sort of up to us to figure out exactly what that person might do on the show," Arthur told Vanity Fair's Nick Tosches in 1997.

The Stones, who had been on the show before, were booked for Jan. 15, 1967, and wanted to perform a new song, the sexually charged (well, in those days, at least) "Let's Spend the Night Together." That line would not go over well with the CBS censors.

"Well, at that time, that was absolutely … it would be like saying, 'Fuck, fuck, fuck.' People's eyes would roll in their heads at the network," Arthur said. "So I was sent to deal with them, because I was also a songwriter … and I came up with a phrase that was almost the same thing and sounded almost the same, and it was, 'Let's spend some time together.' Mick Jagger agreed."

Jagger appeared to roll his eyes as he sang the substituted line, and one wonders how many in the screaming audience noticed the difference.

Arthur was born in New York on May 10, 1928, in the Queens neighborhood of Flushing. He learned to play the piano as a youngster, and at Colgate University, he majored in economics and Spanish and wrote two musicals.

After graduation in 1949, he became an accompanist, conductor and arranger, then served as a bayonet instructor during the Korean War. Back in New York, Arthur was hired by famed arranger and orchestra conductor Ray Bloch to work on the CBS shows hosted by Sullivan and Jackie Gleason.

After the end of the Sullivan program, Arthur moved to Los Angeles, where he helped Dick Clark launch the American Music Awards. He also produced videos that Michael Jackson showed during his concerts; co-wrote the Natalie Cole hit "All About Love;" and had his tunes performed by Tony Bennett and Johnny Mathis.

In addition to his wife of 20 years, survivors include his son Adam; brother Peter; sisters-in-law Anne and Elisabeth; and niece Jacqueline. His wife asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to a favorite charity.

RIP Jim Rodford (Kinks, Animals II, Zombies, Argent) [1941-2018]

Jim Rodford - 1941-2018 Obituary: The Kinks and Zombies bassist

JIM Rodford may have spent the majority of his career as a member of The Kinks but, amazingly, playing the bass in one of Britain’s most iconic bands for 18 years was not his most significant musical achievement.

...

He was also a founding member of the rock group Argent, playing with them from 1969 until 1976 and performing on their hits God Gave Rock And Roll To You and Hold Your Head Up, which reached No 5 in the singles charts on both sides of the Atlantic and sold more than a million copies.

But it is as the “hidden” driving force behind 1960s psychedelic group The Zombies that he was most infl uential.

Despite declining an invitation to join the band set up by his cousin Rod Argent in 1958, Rodford was instrumental in their development, lending them equipment and even helping Argent with their breakthrough 1964 hit She’s Not There.

That band’s 1968 album Odessey And Oracle was later voted as one of the best 100 albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

When The Zombies broke up the following year, Argent again looked to Rodford, with the pair using Argent’s name for their new band.

...

After they disbanded he joined The Kinks in 1978, becoming an integral member of the group for 18 years until their retirement in 1996.

Following his death, The Kinks’ Dave Davies tweeted: “I’m just devastated... I’m too broken up to put words together it’s such a shock... great friend great musician great man – he was an integral part of The Kinks’ later years.”

Born in St Albans, James Walter Rodford took up the bass as a teenager, forming popular skifflegroup The Bluetones with some of his mates from the local Pioneer Club.

It was due to this band’s success that he turned down Argent’s pleas to join The Zombies, though he was happy to act as mentor for the group.

Rodford said in 2014: “Rod used to come to watch The Bluetones perform and in 1961 said he wanted to form a band, so I took them to the club and set them up.That was the first time The Zombies played together and they went on to conquer the world.

“I remember they won a rock contest at Watford Town Hall and the first prize was a recording session at Decca and Rod wrote She’s Not There for it – it went straight to the top of the US

https://www.express.co.uk/news/obituaries/910773/jim-rodford-dead-bassist-the-ki...

As for turning down his chance to be in The Zombies Rodford said: “I was in the biggest band in the area, so why would I want to play with some young kids?”

He later went on to join The Mike Cotton Sound and then formed Argent with Rod, recording the original version of God Gave Rock And Roll To You.

By the time he joined The Kinks the band was past its 1960s heyday but still managed one last classic, the 1983 hit Come Dancing, which became their biggest chart success since 1972.

Finally, in 2004, Rodford joined the reunited Zombies and, along with son Steve on drums, toured with them until his very last performance at a Songwriters Festival in Florida just six days before he died following a fall.

He is survived by wife Jean and sons Steve and Russell.

Kinks and Zombies bassist Jim Rodford dies aged 76

...

The Kinks bassist Jim Rodford has died at the age of 76.

The British musician, who spent 18 years with the band from 1979, also played with Argent and The Zombies.

His cousin and fellow bandmate, Rod Argent,  paid tribute on Facebook to the "magnificent bass player", who died following a fall on the stairs.

He also highlighted his commitment to the music scene in St Albans where he had lived all his life, playing with family members in The Rodford Files.

"He gave us absolutely unflagging commitment, loyalty and unbelievable energy... Our gratitude is beyond measure," Argent said.

"To the end, Jim's life was dedicated to music," Argent continued, in a lengthy tribute posted on Saturday. "He will be unbelievably missed."

The Kinks' Dave Davies paid tribute to his former colleague, who played with the band between 1979 and 1993, writing that he was "devastated by Jim's sudden loss".

"I'm too broken up to put words together, it's such a shock, I always thought Jim would live forever in true rock and roll fashion - strange - great friend, great musician, great man - he was an integral part of the Kinks later years. RIP," he wrote on Twitter.

Rodford was playing with The Bluetones when his cousin, Argent, first asked him to join his then-band The Zombies, alongside singer Colin Blunstone.

Rodford declined, but Argent in his Facebook tribute said he was "inextricably bound to the story of The Zombies" and credited him as being "an enormous enabler" for the band who went on to have a major US hit with She's Not There in 1964.

...

After a stint with the Mike Cotton Sound, the bassist did eventually agree to join his cousin as a founding member of Argent, who are best remembered for the songs Hold Your Head Up and God Gave Rock and Roll to You.

When the Argent split in 1976, Rodford was recruited by the Kinks after the departure of John Dalton, performing on every album from 1979's Low Budget to 1993's Phobia.

"It is with deep sadness that we have learned that Jim Rodford passed away - he toured and recorded with the Kinks for many years and will be greatly missed. He was much loved by all of us," said an official statement from the Kinks on Twitter.

Rodford joined the revived Zombies in 1999 alongside his son, drummer Steve Rodford, touring until his death, most recently in Florida this month.

He was presented with an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Hertfordshire last year.

Milos Forman, Oscar-Winning Director of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ Dies at 86
By Richard Natale and Carmel Dagan

...

Czech-born director Milos Forman, who won best directing Oscars for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Amadeus,” has died. He was 86.

Forman died Friday in the U.S. after a brief illness, his wife, Martina, told the Czech news agency CTK. She said that “his departure was calm, and he was surrounded the whole time by his family and his closest friends.”

Having made just one American film at the time, the ironic comedy “Taking Off” (1971), which won critical acclaim but failed to connect with audiences, Forman seemed an unlikely choice to direct the adaptation of Ken Kesey’s countercultural novel “Cuckoo’s Nest.” But he brought a balance and objectivity to the film, which could easily have descended into histrionics. The critically lauded and immensely popular film starring the fast-rising Jack Nicholson struck a nerve in 1975, and on Academy Awards night it became the first film since 1934’s “It Happened One Night” to sweep the top five Oscar prizes: best picture, director, actress, actor and screenplay (adapted).

To shoot “Amadeus,” Forman returned to his native Czechoslovakia in 1983 and used little-known theater actors to play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Thomas Hulce) and his rival Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), Forman created a compelling and cogent adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s award-winning stage play — helped in great measure by the magnificent Mozartian score. Again, Forman ruled the Oscars, taking another director trophy as the film also drew awards for picture, actor (Abraham), and screenplay, winning eight awards in all. The film was also his most financially successful after “Cuckoo’s Nest.”

With a style that film historian David Thomson said stressed the everyday over the melodramatic and a flair for improvisation, Forman had flourished as a young director in Czechoslovakia with such satirical films as 1966’s “Loves of a Blonde” and 1968’s “The Firemen’s Ball,” the latter of which was refused a showing in his native country because of its satire of bureaucratic thinking.

Forman was in Paris in August 1968 when Russian tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia, ending the Warsaw Pact country’s brief artistic renaissance. Soon thereafter he moved to New York, joining another celebrated Czech director, Ivan Passer, who had penned “Loves of a Blonde” with Forman and others. Forman’s first U.S. film, “Taking Off,” was similar in approach and style to his earlier work, and while it was praised by critics, it did little to establish him as an American director. He also took on “The Decathlon” episode of “Visions of Eight,” a compilation documentary of the Olympics by an octet of different helmers.

Over the years Forman directed few films, and his American track record was mixed. Though “Cuckoo’s Nest” transformed him into an A-list director, he waited four years before his next film, tackling another challenging piece of material, “Hair,” based on the ’60s smash hit musical. But 10 years later, the episodic piece seemed passe onscreen, and Forman’s simple approach was ill-suited for the musical material. He did better with 1981’s “Ragtime,” a mostly successful adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s bestseller centered on intersecting lives in the early 20th century. The film did not score at the box office, however.

He attained commercial and critical success once more with “Amadeus” but never quite scaled those heights again.

Forman appeared next in 1989 with “Valmont,” an adaptation he co-penned of the French period novel “Les Liaisons dangereuses” starring Colin Firth and Annette Bening. While graceful and witty, the film suffered from comparison to the more melodramatic “Dangerous Liaisons,” released the previous year and starring John Malkovich and Glenn Close.

He didn’t direct again until he issued two other satirical pieces in the late ’90s, the first of which was “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” a well-reviewed comedy about the First Amendment controversy stirred up by Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, embodied in the film by Woody Harrelson. While reviews were strong, the film did only moderately well at the box office. But it brought Forman another director nomination in 1996. The reception to his 1999 film “Man on the Moon,” about the offbeat comic Andy Kaufman, was mixed, though lead Jim Carrey pulled in great notices. Again, audiences seemed indifferent to the subject matter.

After an absence of seven years, Forman returned in 2006 with “Goya’s Ghosts,” in which he sought to wed the Inquisition, the life of the painter Goya and the Napoleonic Wars. Implausibilities frustrated critics, but Forman did pull an affecting performance from Natalie Portman, if not from Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgard or Randy Quaid as the king of Spain.

In 2009 Forman directed, with his son Petr, the Czech-language “A Walk Worthwhile,” a remake of his earlier 1966 work for Czech television.

Forman collaborated with Vaclav Havel on the adaptation of a novel about the Munich Agreement, through which Hitler annexed Czechoslovakia’s Sudentenland in 1938, but the project did not come to fruition. He also had in development as a directing project the story of Charles Ponzi, the early 20th century fraudster who lends his name to the Ponzi scheme.

In addition to his directing chores, Forman was co-director of the film program at Columbia U. and appeared as an actor in such films as “Keeping the Faith,” “Heartburn” and “New Year’s Day.”

Born in the town of Caslav (also spelled Kaslov), near Prague, Jan Tomas Forman was raised by an uncle and in foster homes following the death of his parents in WWII concentration camps. After graduating from the Prague Film Faculty of the Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1957, he wrote sketches for the mixed media Laterna Magika, which was celebrated at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels. After departing the group in 1961, he was hired by the Czech state film studio, where he came to attention with two medium-length films, 1961’s “The Talent Competition” and “If There Were No Music.” His feature debut in 1963, “Black Peter,” won the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival and led to such internationally acclaimed efforts as “Loves of a Blonde” and “The Fireman’s Ball.”

Forman was jury president at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985 and the Venice Film Festival in 2000.

In Czechoslovakia Forman was married twice, first to actress Jana Brejchova (his lead actress in “Loves of a Blonde”) and then to Vera Kresadlova, who was the mother of his twin sons Peter and Matej. In 1998 he had another set of twins, Andrew and James, by his third wife, Martina Zborilova.

I don't know if any of y'all remember that besides being in love with Sir Mick Jagger, I used to have a crush on Anthony Bourdain from the Travel Channel.  I stopped following his career when he moved to CNN.  Still, I was a fan.  I even bought a used copy of his book Kitchen Confidential. I'm crushed because he ended his life this morning!  So, so sad!  He was only 61!  May he rest in peace!

Danny Kirwan, the former Fleetwood Mac guitarist who played on five of the British band's albums, died Friday at the age of 68.

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/former-fleetwood-mac-guitarist-danny-kir...

Mick Fleetwood, who recruited the then-18-year-old Kirwan to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, confirmed Kirwan's death with a tribute on the band's Facebook. No cause of death was announced.

"Today was greeted by the sad news of the passing of Danny Kirwan in London, England. Danny was a huge force in our early years. His love for the Blues led him to being asked to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, where he made his musical home for many years," Fleetwood wrote.

"Danny's true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as a part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac, that has now endured for over fifty years. Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!"

Kirwan joined Fleetwood Mac following the release of 1968's Mr. Wonderful – his first appearance with the band was their Number One single "Albatross" – and would record five albums with the band while serving as guitarist and singer: 1969's Then Play On (the band's last Peter Green album) and Blues Jam at Chess, 1970's Kiln House (the first Mac album to feature Christine McVie), 1971's Future Games and 1972's Bare Trees.

Due to his alcoholism, Kirwan was fired from Fleetwood Mac during the tour in support of Bare Trees in 1972. Over the second half of the Seventies, Kirwan released four solo albums. However, Kirwan's next few decades were reportedly marred by bouts of mental health issues and homelessness.

"I've been through a bit of a rough patch but I'm not too bad," Kirwan told the Independent in a rare interview in 1993, after Mick Fleetwood asked the Missing Person Bureau to seek out his former guitarist. "I get by and I suppose I am homeless, but then I've never really had a home since our early days on tour. I couldn't handle it all mentally and I had to get out. I can't settle."

For his contributions to Fleetwood Mac, Kirwan was among the eight members of the band – along with Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, John McVie, Christine McVie and Jeremy Spencer – that were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998; Kirwan did not attend the induction ceremony.

One question Mojo, that reunited airplane released a GREAT álbum with Nicky Hopkins on piano, the question is... Did they "toured" with Nicky in support of the álbum in 1989???

RIP Marty...always a casual fan of JA ans JS...but always enjoyed what I heard...

I think I saw him once with Electric Hot Tuna...cant be sure

But... Comin' Back To Me ...is one of the most beautiful songs written...its mood and transcendence is very similar to what Jagger/Taylor do in Winter. Balin plays and sings this one...

Otis Rush, Influential Blues Singer and Guitarist, Is Dead at 83

By Bill Friskics-Warren
Sept. 29, 2018

Otis Rush, a powerful blues singer and innovative guitarist who had a profound influence not just on his fellow bluesmen but also on rock guitarists like Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, died on Saturday. He was 83.

His wife, Masaki Rush, announced the death on Mr. Rush’s website, saying that the cause was complications of a stroke he had in 2003. She did not say where he died.

A richly emotive singer and a guitarist of great skill and imagination, Mr. Rush was in the vanguard of a small circle of late-1950s innovators, including Buddy Guy and Magic Sam, whose music, steeped in R&B, heralded a new era for Chicago blues.

While Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, his predecessors from the city’s South Side, popularized an amplified update of the bare-bones sound of the Mississippi Delta, Mr. Rush’s modernized variant — which came to be called the West Side sound because of its prevalence in nightclubs in that part of town — was at once more lyrical and more rhythmically complex.

“The sound was a radical departure from the down-home records that dominated the market at the time,” the producer Neil Slaven, contrasting Chicago’s West Side sound with its South Side counterpart, observed in the notes to a compilation of Mr. Rush’s 1950s recordings for the independent Cobra label.

Mr. Rush’s output for Cobra showcased his lacerating, vibrato-laden electric guitar lines and his gritty, gospel-inspired vocals — throaty mid-register groaning, thrilling leaps of falsetto. Holding sway beyond Chicago, his adopted hometown, this early body of work served as a rich repository of material for the blues-rock bands of the 1960s.

The British group John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, which featured Mr. Clapton on lead guitar, included a version of Mr. Rush’s slow-burning 1958 shuffle, “All Your Love (I Miss Loving),” on its 1966 album, “Blues Breakers.” Led Zeppelin reimagined Mr. Rush’s grinding 1956 hit, “I Can’t Quit You, Baby,” on its debut album, “Led Zeppelin”; the Rolling Stones updated the same song in 2016 on their album “Blue and Lonesome.”

The Texas guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan named his band after Mr. Rush’s minor-key tour de force “Double Trouble.” Virtuoso rock guitarists including Johnny Winter and Duane Allman have also cited Mr. Rush as an influence.

Mr. Rush’s guitar technique owed a debt to the discursive single-string voicings of jazz players like Kenny Burrell and jazz-inspired bluesmen like T-Bone Walker and B. B. King. But it was also attributable to the fact that Mr. Rush played his instrument left-handed and upside down. Curling the little finger of his pick hand around the bottom E string of his guitar enabled him to bend and extend notes, to dazzling emotional effect.

“When you play lefty, you’re pulling that vibrato down to the floor,” Mr. Rush told Vintage Guitar magazine in 1998, referring to the tremolo arm, or whammy bar, of an electric guitar. “That makes things a lot easier in terms of pressure and control.

“Pulling down makes more sense, to me anyway,” he added, “and I can work it stronger and get it to sustain better.”

...

The critic Robert Palmer, in his book “Deep Blues” (1981), wrote rapturously of Mr. Rush’s musicianship. “His guitar playing hit heights I didn’t think any musician was capable of: notes bent and twisted so delicately and immaculately,” he wrote, “they seemed to form actual words, phrases that cascaded up the neck, hung suspended over the rhythm and fell suddenly, bunching at the bottom in anguished paroxysms.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1968, the guitarist Michael Bloomfield said that white blues bands hoping to prove themselves in the 1960s “had to be as good as Otis Rush.”

In 2015 Rolling Stone ranked Mr. Rush 53rd on its list of “100 Greatest Guitarists.”

He was born on April 29, 1935, in Philadelphia, Miss., one of seven children of O. C. and Julia (Boyd) Rush. Reared by his sharecropping mother, Otis and his brothers and sisters were often kept out of school to work in the fields to make ends meet. Otis dabbled on the harmonica before he began teaching himself the rudiments of the guitar at age 8.

He moved to Chicago in 1949 after visiting one of his sisters there and seeing the likes of Muddy Waters and Little Walter perform in the city’s South Side clubs. He found work in the local steel mills and stockyards and as a truck driver, and began taking guitar lessons from a local musician, Reggie Boyd.

Mr. Rush first appeared in public in 1953, performing unaccompanied and billed as Little Otis. Three years later he was leading a trio at Chicago’s celebrated 708 Club, where he impressed the bluesman Willie Dixon, then working as a talent scout for the West Side businessman Eli Toscano. Mr. Toscano signed Mr. Rush to his newly founded Cobra label in 1956.

A series of commercial and financial setbacks followed. Several record deals unraveled, including the one with Cobra, which went bankrupt in the late 1950s, a casualty of Mr. Toscano’s mounting gambling debts.

In what would prove to be a streak of unusually bad luck, Mr. Rush’s subsequent recordings, for respected blues labels like Chess and Delmark, were often unreleased or delayed. Most notable was “Right Place, Wrong Time,” an album postponed five years before its release in 1976 on the tiny Bullfrog label.

Ultimately acknowledged by fans and critics as a classic, the album might have brought Mr. Rush greater acclaim had it enjoyed the promotional backing of its original, more powerful label, Capitol Records.

Exacerbating misfortunes like this was Mr. Rush’s reputation as a moody and erratic live performer who could enthrall audiences one night but seem lackluster and aloof the next. Some of his recordings were uneven as well, marred by lesser material and slapdash production — a far cry from his peak work for Cobra and Chess.

Weary and disillusioned, Mr. Rush retired from performing in the late 1970s. He staged a comeback in the ’80s and, though he recorded only sporadically after that, he did win a Grammy Award, for best traditional blues album, for “Any Place I’m Going” in 1999. That same year he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. He did not make another studio album but continued to tour until he had a debilitating stroke in 2003.

Mr. Rush and Masaki Rush had two daughters, Lena and Sophia, as well as several grandchildren. He also had two sons and two daughters from an earlier marriage. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.

Though unquestionably a progenitor of an important strain of Chicago blues, Mr. Rush, in an online interview, denied having had any part in coining the term “West Side sound” to describe his music.

“The public came up with this, not me,” he said. “You know, they had the West Side, South Side and North Side. They started naming it Chicago blues. I don’t know: Chicago blues, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York. Who cares? It’s blues, you know?”
