People magazine:

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is celebrating International Women’s Day with
his daughter Tiana Gia.

In the sweet Instagram clip, the actor, 46, holds his daughter in one hand and a
pamphlet with all of the U.S. presidents on it in the other, before asking her,
“Where’s Dada?”

To Johnson’s delight, Tiana then hilariously responds by pointing at the photo
of Barack Obama, 57. “Yeah! There we go!” he joked.

“Oh my God,” Trump said. “This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I’m fucked.”

That’s how the president reacted in May 2017 to the news that Mueller had been appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to the report. Trump was apparently livid at then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he broke the news of Mueller’s appointment to the president, saying, “How could you let this happen, Jeff?”

“Everyone tells me if you get one of these independent counsels it ruins your presidency. It takes years and years and I won’t be able to do anything,” Trump said, according to notes taken by Sessions’ chief of staff Jody Hunt. “This is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Trump later told The New York Times that he would never have appointed Sessions if he knew the attorney general would recuse himself from the Russia investigation.

https://www.omaha.com/opinion/cal-thomas-the-democrats-economy-problem/article_3...

" Cal Thomas: The Democrats' economy problem .  "

" How long can Democrats continue to claim the roaring economy should be credited to the Obama administration? How many, except the self-deluded, actually believe this?

The latest bad news for the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates is the 3.2 percent GDP growth in the first quarter of this year, surpassing expectations, which is code for "we had predicted an economic disaster from the Trump tax cuts." Additionally, a White House statement noted, "GDP also grew by 3.2 percent over the past four quarters."

The statement also credits net exports and increased investment for helping to drive the economy in the first quarter.

Some of the presidential candidates, who have been claiming wage stagnation and promising increased salaries for workers, if they are elected, have not a dollar to stand on in light of these numbers.

Shall I go through them again? Lowest unemployment in 50 years, including among minorities and women; lowest number of people relying on food assistance since 2010. Will the major media ever acknowledge Trump's achievements? Why should they start now, because doing so would require them to admit they were wrong, as with the Russian "collusion" narrative they pushed for more than two years?

The White House statement notes another reason for the economic gains: "A large pickup in net exports and increased investment in inventories helped drive this strong growth in the first quarter." It gets better or, if you're a Democrat running for president, worse.

According to Bloomberg.com, "A measure of sentiment among Americans climbed to a five-week high as views on the economy posted the largest gain since July." And "The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index rose to 60.8 from 60.3 in the week ended April 20. A gauge of views on personal finances also increased to the best level in five weeks."

This derives, notes Bloomberg, from increased consumer confidence due to rising stock market indexes, sustained wage growth and a decision by the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates at present levels for now. Throw in job growth and the economic picture is about as rosy as one could hope, again unless one is a Democrat running for president.

What do these candidates have to run on? Joe Biden hoped to get forgiveness from Anita Hill for voting to confirm Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. She rejected his clearly political advances. That was a bad misstep and will not resonate well among his party's increasingly dominant left wing.

Many Democrats and some Republicans are focusing on the president's temperament and character. Will that matter to voters who have jobs they didn't have during the Obama administration and to those whose paychecks have been fattened not only from tax cuts, but wage increases? It is unlikely a majority of retirees in the key swing state of Florida will reject Trump and vote for the Democratic nominee when they have seen such steady growth in their stock funds.

Much of Biden's video announcement of his candidacy focused on the clash two years ago in Charlottesville, Virginia, between white supremacists and counterprotesters that left one dead and dozens wounded. Will this rarity that the media exploited as representing conservatives matter in 2020? I doubt it.

Democrats should recall and keep repeating to themselves James Carville's line, "It's the economy, stupid." People already have such a low view of politicians that they tend not to expect too much of them. They worry much more about their own pocketbooks. One might wish it were otherwise, but wishing won't make it so.

This is why Democrats' hopes for 2020 increasingly settle on impeachment. But as Marc A. Thiessen pointed out in a recent column, "Impeachment over anything other than a conspiracy with Russia will backfire with the American people and help ensure Trump's re-election."

" Biden is the best candidate to beat Trump.  "

David Ignatius on Apr 26, 2019

" WASHINGTON -- Joe Biden's limitations as a presidential candidate are so obvious that they're almost a litany: He's too old, too white, too male, too touchy-feely, too loquacious. But he has one huge plus: He may be the person who could move Donald Trump out of the White House.

Biden rightly put the obligation of replacing Trump at the center of his announcement Thursday that he's running. "The core values of this nation -- our standing in the world, our very democracy, everything that has made America, America -- is at stake," he said.

As Democrats assess the dizzying array of 20 candidates, the first question that they should ask is whether a nominee could gain a strong majority in the general election and defeat Trump. If the nominating process produces a candidate who appeals to the party's base but can't defeat the incumbent, it will have failed.

Progressive activists within the party are generating ideas and energy that could galvanize a country that wants a fairer economy and a cleaner government. But none of these ideas will matter unless a Democrat wins. The damage Trump would do in a second term might not be undone for decades. In thinking about their party's nominee, paradoxically, Democrats must put the country first.

Democrats, similarly, should ask whether impeachment in the House will help oust Trump or deepen his support. The evidence gathered by special counsel Robert Mueller certainly is sufficient to open an impeachment process in the House. But if the Senate won't convict, would impeachment help or hinder Democrats in the 2020 election? That may sound like a cynical calculus, but if the goal is removing Trump from office, it's essential to weigh costs and benefits.

The need to replace Trump ought to transcend party and ideology. That's the real message of Mueller's final report. His findings were devastating to Trump's standing, regardless of whether they amounted to a criminal conspiracy or obstruction case. The very fact that Mueller was so restrained in his conclusions made his compilation of evidence more powerful.

Do the facts matter when it comes to Trump? That's been the question since he began his incendiary, populist campaign. There's little that we've learned about his bullying and deceitful character that wasn't apparent on Election Day.

But anger begets anger. And the louder critics screamed, the more Trump's fans seemed to like him. A philandering, thrice-married man who facilitated hush money to a porn star somehow became the favorite of evangelical Christians.

Politicians and pundits have taken sides on the Mueller investigation for so long that many people probably didn't bother to read the report. But reviewing the carefully assembled evidence and footnotes should be an obligation for good citizens. Don't listen to what Fox News or MSNBC say about the report. Read it for yourself, and then decide if Trump is fit to remain as president.

Witnesses told Mueller under oath that Trump had pressed them to create evidence for the record to shield his wrongdoing. They described secret plans to use foreign intelligence services to find Hillary Clinton's "30,000 missing emails" from her private server. They described a meeting where Trump's campaign chairman hatched a plan for what amounted to "backdoor" Russian annexation of eastern Ukraine. They explained that, following a pre-inauguration meeting in the Seychelles, a secret "reconciliation plan" with Russia was produced, despite what U.S. intelligence agencies believed was a Russian covert operation to sabotage the 2016 presidential election.

Positions about Trump have hardened so much that Mueller's facts don't seem to break through. It's like trying to argue about vaccinations. Shouting isn't an effective strategy. People just feel more defensive, and hold more tightly to their positions, as a kind of self-defense.

Maybe we need a grass-roots movement, unaffiliated with any party, that's just called "Read the Report." People could hand out copies on urban street corners and at county fairs. The only message: Don't let the cable news channels tell you what to think. Do your own research and make up your own mind.

Which brings me back to Biden. With all his blarney and sometimes tedious speechifying, he's obviously, uncontestably a decent person. He would be far from an ideal president, let alone a Democratic candidate. Maybe in one of those blessed miracles of American democracy that produced our greatest presidents, someone else will emerge who's younger, smarter, more representative of a diverse electorate.

But right now, Biden looks most like the person who could beat Trump. And that's Job One. "

" America must break out of its 'terrorism fatigue' .  "

David Ignatius on Apr 24, 2019

" WASHINGTON -- One disturbing aspect of the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka was that the slaughter of 321 victims came at a time when America is suffering what might be described as "terrorism fatigue."

The wars against al-Qaida and the Islamic State are part of a painful past that policymakers and the public want to escape. Those Middle East conflicts were costly and distracting. They didn't produce many tangible gains, other than killing terrorists. Sept. 11, 2001, feels like it happened a long time ago, and many politicians want to move on.

But the networks of violent extremists are still there, stretching to places most of us probably hadn't even imagined, like Sri Lanka. The bombings there of churches and other sites were allegedly staged by two obscure Islamist groups, National Thowheed Jamaath and Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim -- with the Islamic State claiming that it also played a role.

Terrorism is metastasizing in other ways, as militant white nationalists join the melee. Brenton Harrison Tarrant, an Australian extremist, allegedly shot and killed 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, last month after circulating a manifesto expressing rage at migrants. Hideously, there are signs that the Sri Lankan church bombings may have been an act of revenge for the New Zealand mosque shootings -- in one of those spasms of hatred that are a terrorist's dream.

"We're seeing the viral spread of the Islamic State, which takes root in fragile environments where people feel disenfranchised and excluded," says Nancy Lindborg, president of the U.S. Institute of Peace. She explains that the Islamic State's global network has grown so rapidly over the last five years that it's bigger now than al-Qaida ever was. "We can't kill our way out of this," Lindborg argues, noting that more repressive security forces in places like Sri Lanka will only make the problem worse.

Lindborg spoke Tuesday at a meeting hosted by her institute to release a new report entitled "Preventing Extremism in Fragile States: A New Approach." The gathering was timely, and the conclusions were stark.

America has failed to learn the lesson of Sept. 11, argued Tom Kean, the Republican former governor of New Jersey, who was chair of the 9/11 Commission and is co-chair of the new USIP task force. The U.S. took down the leadership of al-Qaida, to be sure, just as it did later against the Islamic State. But the 9/11 Commission had argued for a broader strategy that would attack the underlying causes of terrorism, not just respond militarily, Kean reminded the USIP audience.

"Our current focus on counterterrorism is necessary, but neither sufficient nor cost-effective," argued the report prepared by Kean's task force. The authors reckoned that since 2001, the war on terror has taken 10,000 American lives, injured 50,000 others, and cost the U.S. an estimated total of $5.9 trillion. Even after that immense commitment, the problem continues -- and as the report cautions, the current U.S. approach is "unsustainable."

What's the alternative? Unfortunately, it's the slow and unglamorous work of preventing weak states from collapsing to the point that they're terrorism havens. It's about building governance and economic development, rather than night raids by Special Operations Forces. It's about "connecting the dots" among different intelligence agencies and nations -- something that's been given lip service, endlessly, since 9/11 but still hasn't been achieved.

Nations, like individual human beings, often seem condemned to make the same mistakes over and over. That's certainly true with countering terrorism. Policymakers in the U.S. and allied countries understand intellectually that a safe and stable world requires reasonable governance, a public belief that some sort of rough justice prevails, and enough jobs that adolescent men aren't tempted to join terror groups.

We're not talking here about imposing democracy or making the Middle East and Africa look like Switzerland. We're talking the basics -- food, water, access to justice, good-enough governance. The United States can't do this job by itself, even if it tries. We've certainly found that out, but America remains the essential partner.

Yet we're fatigued. These mundane anti-fragility tasks don't win medals for soldiers, or get politicians reelected, or make business executives rich, so they end up at the bottom of the pile. Another problem is that this strategy is led by the State Department, the most underutilized and money-starved agency of our government.

We're horrified when bombs ravage places of worship on the other side of the globe. But not enough to do the boring but essential thing that has been staring America in the face for 18 years, which is to slowly help build a world that's more just, prosperous and stable. "
